Toney is a class act. Wouldn't be surprised if a bigger team came in for him, hope he doesn't waste his prime years at a mid-table club when he's got the potential for more, a la Wilfred Zaha.
 
Brentford have condemned the "disgusting, racist abuse" faced by striker Ivan Toney after his two goals in Friday's 2-0 win over Brighton.

Toney posted a screenshot of a direct message he received on Instagram and wrote on Twitter: "I wasn't even going to post this but I woke up angry".

In a statement, the Bees said it condemned the discrimination in the "strongest possible terms".

"An attack on one of our players is an attack on all of us," the club said.

"Ivan will receive the full backing from the club and from the Brentford fans who we have already seen condemning the abuse.

"We expect strong support from the police, legal authorities and from Instagram's parent company, Meta, to ensure that the individual involved faces the full force of the law for this despicable hate crime."

Brentford added that all relevant authorities had been informed, including the police.

The Premier League said: "No one should have to face abuse of the kind received by Ivan Toney. It has no place in football or society.

"We are supporting Ivan and the club with investigations."

In May, Toney and team-mate Rico Henry said their families were racially abused at Goodison Park after Brentford's 3-2 win over Everton.

On Friday, Toney, 27, scored either side of the break, including a second-half penalty, as Brentford returned to winning ways against Brighton.

Players took the knee before kick-off as part of the Premier League's No Room For Racism campaign, with teams doing so prior to all Premier League matches between 8 and 16 October to show their unity against all forms of racism.

Premier League captains decided before the start of the current season that players would stop the pre-match anti-racism gesture of taking the knee before every game. It will now be seen before certain rounds of games.

Toney was called into the England squad for September's Nations League fixtures against Italy and Germany but was not used by Gareth Southgate.

Ivan Toney and his good days seem to be turning Brentford from a solid enough lower-mid table outfit into a club that could challenge for the top half of the Premier League.

When Toney is at the races his magic moments and individual brilliance can give the whole team a lift and get them over the line in tight games.

His career penalty taking record is also incredible — he should be in the England squad just for that!

It would be scandal if Ivan doesn't get selected he would be every defenders nightmare and his great penalty record will make him an asset. Bees will need one hell of a replacement when he leaves.

His penalty technique is curious. Basically just one pace and then a huge swing of his leg.

Brentford have opened talks with manager Thomas Frank about a new contract.

Frank’s current deal – signed in January this year – runs until 2025.

The club are keen to improve his contract further, however, after another strong start to a Premier League season.

I think there is some anxiety about Thomas Frank leaving for a “bigger club” if the right opportunity comes up.

Diego Costa was sent off in second-half stoppage time as Wolves secured a rare away point at Brentford but still remain in the Premier League bottom three.

The striker was sent off for violent conduct after appearing to headbutt Brentford's Ben Mee.

Earlier, Ruben Neves' equaliser cancelled out Mee's superb volley early in the second half.

Wolves move up one place to 18th, while Brentford go up to 11th.

An attritional and injury-laden first half gave way to a livelier second period, with Brentford's Ivan Toney missing from close range late on.

But the Bees' prolific striker was also booked for his fifth yellow card of the season, meaning he will miss their next outing against Nottingham Forest.

Costa, 34, had become more of a threat as the game developed and forced David Raya into making a save with a shot from a tight angle, before being dismissed for the first time in the Premier League.

Costa's costly rush of blood

Last week's 4-0 defeat by Leicester City had featured chants from sections of Wolves' Molineux support aimed at technical director Scott Sellars, who was later defended by interim head coach Steve Davis.

And their struggles in front of goal this season, with only five scored before kick-off, continued with substitute Joao Moutinho coming closest in the first half when his volley direct from a corner was deflected away by Mee.

But the Brentford centre-back's goal stung them into action, with Neves being picked out with a pass from the right from Nelson Semedo before he shot past a motionless Raya into the bottom corner.

Costa's clash with Mee on the edge of Brentford's box late in the game was referred to VAR and when referee Bobby Madley consulted the pitchside monitor, it felt inevitable that the ex-Chelsea forward would see a straight red card.

Struggling in front of goal all season and without a permanent manager, Wolves are now set to be without Costa for three matches until they resume after the World Cup against Everton on Boxing Day.

The home side were tentative before the break, and like the visitors did not manage a shot on target in the opening 45 minutes.

Toney, whose eight goals pre kick-off were more than Wolves' entire tally for the season so far, fluffed a chance when he slipped over in the area but Josh Dasilva was much closer with a fine curling shot that shaped just wide.

Thomas Frank's side were livelier from the start of the second half, and an exchange of passes from a corner then saw Bryan Mbeumo's cross brilliantly converted by Mee.

Rocked back by Neves' goal just 109 seconds later, they came closest to retaking the lead when Dasilva's on-target effort drew a vital block from Nathan Collins.

An unmarked Toney missed a header from close range with just under 10 minutes left, and after Mee had grappled with Costa the Bees could not take advantage of having an extra player and had to settle for their sixth draw of the league campaign.

I know they hammered Man U and Leeds but this seems a while ago now.

They themselves have been hammered by Newcastle and Villa since then, and they are starting to look a bit inconsistent.

The FA prohibits players from betting on the sport and it is claimed the 26-year-old is being investigated for historical bets made before he joined the Premier League club.

The FA declined to comment and his club said: "We note the story concerning Ivan Toney and the FA investigation. The club will not be commenting."

Toney was named in England manager Gareth Southgate's last squad for September's Nations League games but did not get on the pitch.

However he has been tipped to make the squad for the upcoming World Cup in Qatar when it is announced on Thursday, after scoring eight goals in 13 games this season.

The former Northampton, Newcastle, and Peterborough player, who joined Brentford for £5m in 2020, released a statement on Twitter which read: "I'm aware of a story about me in a national newspaper today.

"I have been assisting the Football Association with their enquiries and will not be making any comment until such investigation has reached its conclusion.

"I am a proud Englishman and it has always been my childhood dream to play for my country at a World Cup finals."

Ivan Toney responded to being overlooked for England's World Cup squad by delivering a match-winning two-goal performance in Brentford's thoroughly deserved win at Manchester City.

Toney missed out on a place in Qatar but demonstrated his vital importance to Brentford with an outstanding all-round display that left the reigning Premier League champions stunned as the Bees took all three points with a 98th-minute winner.

It was fully merited for Brentford's positive approach as they refused to take a backward step from the first whistle, even after Manchester City's Phil Foden restored equality with a crisp left-foot half-volley seconds before the interval.

City, inevitably, turned up the tempo after the break, Ilkay Gundogan missing a glorious chance to put them ahead, but Brentford were a constant threat on the break with Ederson twice having to save from the ever-dangerous Toney.

And it was a fitting conclusion to that added period of 10 minutes, mainly for a head injury to Aymeric Laporte, when Brentford caught City on the break for Toney to sweep home Josh Dasilva's cross - the striker almost completing a hat-trick seconds later only for Kevin de Bruyne to clear off the line.

Brentford show the way
Brentford demonstrated that bravery can be rewarded at Manchester City, not even needing any real slices of good fortune to deliver another outstanding victory under manager Thomas Frank.

Leicester City's risk-averse approach at home to the champions recently drew a negative response, their stand-offish manner made to look even more unwise when they lost 1-0.

Brentford went for Manchester City from the first whistle, perhaps noting the vulnerability that saw them just scrape victory over Fulham with a last-minute penalty last weekend.

Toney was thwarted by Ederson even before he opened the scoring and with the outstanding Rico Henry providing pace and threat on the flanks, Brentford did not change their approach even after Foden's equaliser looked to have changed the game.

Brentford may have caught City on an off-day but Frank produced a gameplan that kept Erling Haaland quiet for once while posing a constant threat that eventually brought that dramatic late winner.

The ecstatic scenes at the final whistle were understandable and thoroughly deserved. No-one could begrudge Brentford their celebrations.

From the ridiculous to the sublime. Only Brentford can go from being knocked out at home to Gillingham to beating mighty Man City at their fortress. That counter attack winner was something special. Well deserved too as they created numerous chances. Toney could have had 4. Greatest win in our history.

Manchester City embarrassed themselves today. Players with one eye on the World Cup and diving / appealing for penalties everywhere. A lazy performance with not many clear chances created.

A fantastic, clinical display from Ivan Toney out there against a world class defence. How is he not on the plane to Qatar?!

Congratulations Brentford and their fans. Looked fully at the races from the first whistle and to be honest could have scored three or four.

The alleged breaches took place between 25 February 2017 and 23 January 2021.

Toney, 26, has scored 10 Premier League goals this season but missed out on a place in the England World Cup squad.

Brentford said in a statement: "The club has been in discussion with Ivan and his legal representatives. Those conversations will continue privately."

The statement continued: "We will make no further comment until the matter has been completed."

Toney has until 24 November to respond to the FA misconduct charges, which involve alleged breaches of FA rule E8, which bans players from betting on games, or sharing privileged information for the purposes of betting.

He faces a lengthy ban if they are proven. England defender Kieran Trippier was banned for 10 weeks by the FA in December 2020 for giving out information for others to bet on his transfer from Tottenham to Atletico Madrid.

Toney said earlier this month, after the allegations were first reported, that he was "assisting the Football Association with their enquiries".

During the time stated in the FA charge, Toney represented four different clubs - Scunthorpe United, Wigan Athletic, Peterborough United and Brentford.

He was on the books at Newcastle United from 2015-2018 but spent the majority of that time out on loan. The Northampton-born player had two spells at Scunthorpe, playing for them in the 2016-17 season and again from January to May 2018, either side of six months on loan at Wigan.

Toney signed for Peterborough in August 2018, before making a £5m move to Brentford in September 2020.

The forward, who began his career at Northampton, has scored 58 goals in 105 appearances for Brentford, including two in a shock 2-1 win at defending Premier League champions Manchester City in the final game before the World Cup break.

Only England captain Harry Kane (12) and City forward Erling Haaland (18) have scored more goals in the Premier League this season.

Toney received his first England call-up for September's Nations League games against Italy and Germany but did not get on the pitch in either.

Ivan Toney has been charged with a further 30 alleged breaches of FA betting rules.

The Brentford forward had originally been charged over 232 alleged breaches of betting rules in November.

On Tuesday evening, an FA spokeperson said: "Ivan Toney has been charged with misconduct in relation to alleged breaches of The FA's Betting Rules.

"In addition to the previous charge, it is alleged that the Brentford FC forward breached FA Rule E8 a further 30 times between 14 March 2017 and 18 February 2019.

"Ivan Toney has until Wednesday 4 January 2023 to provide a response."

A statement from Brentford said: "The FA have informed Brentford FC that Ivan Toney has been charged in relation to additional alleged breaches of their betting rules.

"Our private discussions with Ivan and his legal representatives on this matter continue. We will make no further comment at this stage."

Toney, who was not included in England's 26-man World Cup squad, had previously revealed he had been assisting the FA with its enquiries amid allegations he gambled on matches.

After a report in the Daily Mail claimed he had been the subject of an FA investigation, he tweeted on November 5: "I'm aware of a story about me in a national newspaper today.

"I have been assisting the Football Association with their enquiries and will not be making any comment until such investigation has reached its conclusion."

What are the rules on betting in football?

Betting on football is banned worldwide for all players, managers, coaches, club staff, directors and licensed agents involved in the game within the Premier League, EFL, National League, Women's Super League, Women's Championship and the Northern, Southern and Isthmian leagues.

Participants covered by the ban are prohibited from betting, either directly or indirectly, on any football match or competition that takes place anywhere in the world.

The ban also includes betting on any other football-related matter such as the transfer of players, managerial appointments or team selection.

The passing of inside information to somebody that uses the information for betting is also not allowed. Inside information is information that you are aware of due to your position in the game and which is not publicly available, like injury or team selection news.

You are not allowed to use inside information to place a bet or to instruct someone else to do so on your behalf. Equally, you are not allowed to pass inside information on to someone else which they use for betting.

Other high-profile players charged and subsequently found guilty of breaking FA betting rules include current England World Cup squad member Kieran Trippier, who was banned from football activity for 10 weeks and handed a £70,000 fine for telling a friend to "lump on" the prospect of him joining Atletico Madrid before his switch from Tottenham in 2019.

Daniel Sturridge was also punished for disclosing inside information about a transfer. After initially being given a six-week suspension, his punishment was increased to a four-month ban and £150,000 fine after it was found he had instructed his brother to bet on a January 2018 move to Sevilla.

Joey Barton was given an 18-month ban in 2017 after placing 1,260 bets on football between 2006 and 2016. The punishment brought about his retirement from playing football, although the term was later reduced by five months on appeal.

Barring the 5-1 horror show at Newcastle and the 4-0 defeat away to Aston Villa, Brentford had quashed any speculation over whether they were about to be the next victims of the fabled 'second season syndrome' by the time the Premier League paused for the World Cup last month. If it was not the case already, they appear to have very much established themselves as part of the furniture in the top flight.

And who could forget the way in they entered the break? Days after an embarrassing Carabao Cup shootout defeat to Gillingham, they went to the Etihad as outright underdogs, yet failed to crumble and came away with a fully deserved 2-1 win against reigning Premier League champions Manchester City.

The Bees' talisman frontman Ivan Toney was very much in the spotlight that afternoon. He responded to Gareth Southgate's decision to omit him from the England squad by scoring both goals, which left many questioning why he would not be travelling to Qatar, particularly given his exquisite penalty record and the fact he was the league's second highest scoring Englishman with 10 goals, behind only Harry Kane.

Just a few days later, it was revealed that Toney had been charged over 232 alleged breaches of betting rules between February 2017 and January 2021.

He was part of Brentford's trip to Spain earlier this month and played an active part in mid-season friendlies against Bordeaux, Celta Vigo and Wolfsburg, but then came Tuesday's news of an additional charge of a further 30 alleged breaches.

If those allegations against him are proven, the striker could face a lengthy ban. Given the fact he has scored 11 of Brentford's 26 goals in all competitions so far this term - with Bryan Mbeumo and Yoane Wissa following up with three each - you do get the feeling the Bees will be looking over their shoulder somewhat with regards to developments in the saga.

What a sad loss. I get footy players bet on other sports, but over 260 breaches? I am even willing to accept the odd bet on a footy match breaking the rules, but over 260 breaches?

I just hope this doesn't turn into something bigger like a match-fixing scandal!

And he is injured.

Toney has the right to defend himself against each of the alleged 262 breaches individually, so the disciplinary may take weeks before a decision is made. Exoneration in all 262 cases seems inconceivable so presumably he is unsellable now too? It would be prudent for Brentford to find a replacement striker sharpish, who can fit into their playing system and hit the ground running, presumably on a loan basis.

Amongst a nasty looking knee injury and the ongoing betting case, I think last night might be the last we see of Ivan Toney for a while.

Which is a pity, because he is a pretty great player who makes a huge difference to Brentford, turning them from a plucky team into a genuinely good one.

There’s no doubt about it, Brentford need a decent striker in this window to backfill some of the goal contributions that would be lost in Toney’s absence.

I wonder why? Gambling addiction? Can’t have been match-fixing, as he scored all those goals and never missed a penalty.
 
Having a good season and so far one of only 2 sides to have beaten Manchester City.

However being without Toney for significant length of time could be problematic, it's difficult to buy someone that's quite well rounded as he is and he's so good in the air too.
 
Brentford striker Ivan Toney's injury is "not significant" and he could play against Liverpool on Monday, Bees manager Thomas Frank has confirmed.

Toney, 26, was carried off the pitch after jarring his knee in Brentford's 2-0 win at West Ham on Friday.

He had earlier scored the Bees' first goal - his 12th of the season - and set up the second at London Stadium.

"It's good news," said Frank. "There's nothing wrong with his knee. He could potentially be available for tomorrow."

Brentford sit 10th in the Premier League before Monday evening's home match against Liverpool, having put together a five-game unbeaten run in the league.

"We have massive belief in ourselves," said Frank. "We're very confident that we can get a very good result against any team."

Defenders Aaron Hickey and Kristoffer Ajer will unavailable against Liverpool as they continue their recovery from injury.

But today was too close, one or two days more could have done it. So we expect him to be close to being available against West Ham.

"Of course taking the key man offensively out of the team is a miss. That said, I know we have a very good replacement in Yoane Wissa.

"Last time he started here he scored and got a penalty. No doubt he adds something different and I don't think it's any secret that Liverpool have a high line. Wissa likes to run in behind so hopefully he can do that.

"It was a very entertaining game to be a part of last year, maybe the most entertaining of the season. I hope we make it as an entertaining game today, just with us winning 4-3.

"We are playing against a very good team but the key thing is we need to be aggressive and brave."

Thomas Frank has a done a great job at Brentford. Not only did he take them to the premier league, but he also seems to have made Brentford a stable premier league club. He is a very good manager.

Brentford are closing in on the signing of Freiburg forward Kevin Schade on a six-month loan.

Bees manager Thomas Frank is still keen to bolster his ranks and the move could be announced as early as Wednesday.

It is understood the transfer will become permanent if certain clauses in the 21-year-old's deal are met.

Germany Under-21 international Schade can fill a variety of attacking roles and will provide support for Ivan Toney.

While the knee injury Tony sustained at West Ham on 30 December was deemed "not significant", the striker's short-term future remains uncertain as he has been charged by the FA with 262 breaches of betting rules.

Schade made his first team debut for Freiburg in August 2021 and has scored four goals in 21 appearances for the Bundesliga side.

Brentford are ninth in the Premier League table after beating Liverpool 3-1 at the Community Stadium on Monday.

Said Benrahma's goal helped West Ham into the FA Cup fourth round at the expense of his former side Brentford.

He collected the ball after a perfectly timed Declan Rice tackle and thumped home from 25 yards.

While a fine strike by the Algerian, the ball went over reserve keeper Thomas Strakosha in the middle of the goal who should have done better.

Brentford made seven changes and only had one shot on target, in a game lacking attacking quality.

Large periods of the match were spent with the ball passed around the defence and midfield.

The Brentford Community Stadium pitch was heavy after the Bees played there on Monday and London Irish on Wednesday, with conditions getting worse as the first half progressed because of driving rain.

It led to little quality, with Yoane Wissa's toe-poked effort hitting Lukasz Fabianski on the ankle, before going behind for a corner.

That was the closest Brentford came in the whole game, with their performance disjointed by the changes made.

They were a surprise after Thomas Frank hinted at wanting a cup run, calling their Carabao Cup exit to League Two Gillingham their "biggest disappointment" this season.

West Ham made four changes and fielded a strong side, but they too lacked quality throughout the game.

Tomas Soucek should have scored but flicked an Emerson cross wide from seven yards out in the opening exchanges of the second period.

Benrahma's strike was West Ham's first on target, and was a fine effort, but Strakosha will be disappointed.

The winger decided not to celebrate against his former side, but the goal will have been relief to West Ham and manager David Moyes, who would not have wanted a replay in between crucial Premier League games against fellow strugglers Wolves and Everton.

It continues Moyes' impressive record in the FA Cup third round, with the Scot now having won 10 of his 12 ties at that stage.

Just a dream season so far, went to the Liverpool game just incredible. I expect Chelsea and Liverpool to get their act together at some point but if we could maintain form and get top 10 that would be superb.
 
The next thing will be to start building Brentford on not an international business like Man U.

David Raya says he is "really happy" at Brentford despite rejecting two new contract offers from the club.

The 27-year-old Spain goalkeeper says he was offered a new contract with the club last year and again in January.

Tottenham, Chelsea and Manchester United are reportedly all interested in making a move for Raya in the summer transfer window.

"I don't think it's the right time to sign a contract at the moment," Raya said.

"I'm really, really happy and right now I'm just thinking about doing the best for the team and trying to push for Europe."

Raya, whose current deal with the Bees expires in summer 2024, has made 144 appearances for the club since joining from Blackburn Rovers in 2019.

He has kept eight clean sheets for Brentford in the Premier League this season and the club sit seventh, six points behind fifth-placed Tottenham in the Europa League spot with a game in hand.

"I was offered a new contract last year and one in January but we didn't reach an agreement," he said.

"For now a new contract is secondary, the most important thing is the team and the games. We'll see where we are in May.

"You never know what's around the corner. There's nothing I can say about what's going to happen in the summer. I don't even know what's going to happen on Saturday."

Raya, who earned his first senior international caps with Spain in 2022 and was named in their World Cup squad, says Brentford feels like home.

He said: "It's always going to be home - no matter what. I'm in one of the happiest times of my career."

Brentford make three changes from last weekend's win over Southampton.

Right-back Mads Roerslev, centre-back Kristoffer Ajer and midfielder Vitaly Janelt all come into Thomas Frank's side.

That looks like a tweak in formation to 3-5-2 with Aaron Hickey, Josh Dasilva and Yoane Wissa dropping to the bench.

After finishing a commendable 13th in their first Premier League season last term, Brentford are having another fine campaign and are pushing for a European place.

Thomas Franks' side had not conceded a goal in their three league games before the trip to Arsenal and it was clear to see why they are such a difficult side to break down.

They kept their shape despite Arsenal enjoying the majority of possession and responded brilliantly to the Gunners taking the lead to became one of only two sides this season to take anything away from the Emirates.

Toney's goal was his 15th of the season - only Erling Haaland and Harry Kane have scored more - and with the Bees having an excellent defence allied to his threat, there is every chance they can secure European football next season.
