The Wrestling Discussion Thread

It was a very average Mania go home Raw. The only part I liked was Roman-Seth-Paul-Punk segment. Roman just keeps getting better with using the crowd.

Brother,

Is Cena even returning for real?

Getting a feel this heel run will continue beyond the WM.

They not fooling me with this bro.

One thing which Dave Metlzer always got right was his assessment of H, even as early as the late 90’s, H has won the most overrated wrestler award a record number of times in the Observer newsletter, in the top 2 I think and was also the reader’s least favourite a good few times
Even a broken clock will tell a correct time at some point. Meltzer has lost all the credibility he had. He is probably a bigger mark for AEW than Tony.

Sorry brother, but I don’t think so.

He will probably do a rap battle over the titantron with Cody because he’s a busy movie star and doesn’t have time

And then after beating Cody like that he will be champ.

You’re right, but with H he has consistently been spot on when it came to his ring work. Bill Apter might be the only ancient fella involved with wrestling that may still have cred.

Also how badly did this fool h drop the ball on the whole Uncle Howdy saga after so much investment early on? Same with the Karrion stable with Miz.

Instead he put all his eggs yeeting and reeting… guy’s brain is so simple.

So many compelling stories could’ve been told.

But no. H just pull Logan Paul out of his bum and pair him with any legend and then send Jey acting like a rapper at a concert but he can’t rap or wrestle.

AJ v Gunther or Chad v AJ and something more than bloodline shenanigans for 4 years in a row.

The use of AJ has been pathetic among other vets to, he can’t book any mysterious characters to save his life which makes me query whether he is cut out for booking at this level really, his view on wrestling is very dated if I ignore his personal flaws.

The El Grande stuff is winning me over, but am not sure he is the guy I should credit for that when a certain someone can get a pile of crap over, Grande vs Rey is a solid showcase match now and in my top 3; but you could look at it another way and say that’s because the undercard is so weak.

If I'm not wrong, those awards are voted for by Observer readers.

Am not 100% sure now that you mention it because he had separate ‘reader’s’ awards to, H did win ‘reader’s least favourite’ awards as well though.

I forgot to ask you, did he stop rating the COVID matches because he was losing subscribers over rating those matches ?

Hahaha its a rumor I heard on a podcast at the time but probably true. Initially he was like I won't rate these matches that take place inside WWE PC. Then suddenly he was pretty okay rating everything during the pandemic.

Gunther's promo on RAW may have been his best one yet. Amazing to see how far he has come on the mic in such a short period of time. Too bad he's going to be losing his belt on Saturday.

Dave was about to be made to go on furlough leave lol It’s a shame because Orton vs Edge deserved to be rated

@shaz619 You were asking how many H matches would be in there. Bet you didn't have this on your bingo card :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

I wouldn’t put it beneath H; he has been feuding with us since 1998. He really has HBK vs Angle at no.22. You remember the old WWE website, that had it at no.3, at least I could respect that, I use to print the list at School to read it at home when I was a tiny jobber 🤣

Off topic, Sinners is on my list to see soon iA Also, I recommend Mickey 17 if you’ve not seen it yet.

Since that angle where he nearly killed Jimmy, both have really stepped up massively and Gunther is vastly improved as a personality; I give Mizz a lot of credit for bringing that out, Gunther has gone from strength to strength since that feud. Will try and watch RAW over next few days but I heard it didn’t feel like a go-home show.

drew vs ziggler was pretty underrated as well during that pandemic era.

I was away from pro-wrestling for a few years. When I left, Ziggler was a rookie.

After I returned to watching again, I found out Ziggler won the world title. I was shocked. Never expected Ziggler to go beyond mid-tier.

I feel bad for guys like Shelton Benjamin, Chavo Guererro etc. who couldn't win a world title despite being better.

The two matches from that period which I don’t think will ever be topped were Orton/Edge and Bryan/AJ in a Iron Man Match; the latter wont be remembered due to obvious reasons but if it was before a live crowd it could have gone down as one of the greatest matches of the century imo It was the perfect sequel to Bret v Shawn @ WM 12.

Chavo was never that great. Shelton was underutilized.

Every version of this meme is funnier than the one before it.

Been meaning to see mickey 17. Wanna see it on the big screen but havent been able to so far

I believe world titles should be won by big guys and super-charismatic guys only.

Post-2010, many undeserving wrestlers won world titles. They were midcarders but were elevated to main-event for some reason.

I think guys like Zigger, Kofi Kingston, Fiend, Finn Balor, Seth Rollins etc. shouldn't have won world titles. They would've been midcarders in attitude era or ruthless aggression era.

Nah Fiend was amazing. They booked him too weak if anything. He deserved to be booked far stronger. That is a character you want around because of the added dimension he brings to the product.

They had the chance with uncle howdy but wasted it

Fiend was like Boogeyman. I think this type of character suits in midcarder level.

I don't think Fiend would've won any world title in pre-2010 WWE.

Other 2 wrestlers who I thought shouldn't have won world titles were Rey Mysterio and Jeff Hardy. How can a little guy like Mysterio wins it? He is a cruiserweight.

Which Iron Man Match? I remember AJ vs Bryan for the vacant IC title which I agree was the second best match of that era after Edge-Randy. In addition, that Sami vs Jeff Hardy vs AJ ladder match for the IC title was pretty amazing too.
That Edge Randy match was just too good. I remember around that time, marks were preaching the Meltzer narrative that Randy was a one dimensional wrestler and boring lol. That match was such a big slap for all his critics.

Shelton was brilliant but I think Ziggler was much better than Chavo.

Jeff is the GOAT non lucha libre high flyer. His personality and charisma is unmatched. He deserved the world title much more than some of the big guys like Sid, Khali, Alberto etc.

I’d say he was capable to be in the Undertaker mould, he was far from just comic relief.

Ofc Undertaker is arguably the GOAT, not saying he’d be like that verbatim

But definitely when it comes to more dramatic style matches like those buried alive style matches Fiend was great for that and Bray had a great mind for theatrics. He was able to combine wrestling with drama and visuals which isn’t the easiest thing to do.

No one can be as good as the Undertaker as he was the complete package. The Fiend could have been as good as Kane though.

Yeah. Kane was heavily underutilized as is… really wish they pushed him more in the late 90s and esp up around 03-04 instead of that bum h.

And never unmasked him

Dude dwarfed undertaker despite same height due to his sheer size. Heard he was the only one to beat Brock in arm wrestling in the locker room as well

Yes. And he was pretty decent in the ring as well. that katy vick angle was so awful and they unified IC and WHC title for no reason at all.

Gotta give props to Undertaker as well for helping Glenn out with the Kane gimmick. At that point he had been in the company for a while and could’ve easily had the attitude of “I don’t want to share my limelight” but instead was cool with Kane having p much his entire moveset as well.

And Kane did one hell of a job copying that moveset. And even after that, Taker would keep coming up new moves like The Last Ride, Hell's Gate etc. Chokeslam was probably the only move that Kane arguably did better than Taker.

People still talk about that match to this day, even though it happened in a difficult scenario, that was arguably Orton’s best match ever.

Yeah you’re right, but I could swear they took like an entire hour of SD with the adverts.

Others which deserve honourable mention although some of these did not occur in the ring:

Taker/AJ - Boneyard match
Fiend/Cena - Fire Fly Fun House
Ortin/Edge - Last Man Standing Match
MITB Match @ WWE HQ

Rhea Ripley vs Charlotte Flair 1 - This was a special match and easily the best women’s match during that time, Rhea was like a baby, but even then, what a natural, and Flair really bought the intensity you rarely see these days even from the male performers, this match could have happened anywhere, with fans or without and it would have got over even if they were fighting at the bottom of my street or some random alley.

This shows it really was Rock’s involvement and hand in making last year’s WM a massive success.

He knew how to use himself as a plot device (which served him too) but at least the booking made sense.

H is losing the plot. Out of all these matches the only one I’m excited for is the IC fatal 4 and Americano for the memes. When it should be the world title events…

It wasn't enough for Vince to kill the character in that Hell in a Cell match against Rollins. Then there was the match vs Goldberg in Saudi. Then the match against Orton at WrestleMania. They had multiple opportunities and still completely buried and destroyed the character multiple times.

@shaz619 Have you seen the new WWE doc? It’s a really interesting behind-the-scenes look at WrestleMania 9. It combines BTS footage shot back then with current interviews from Bret, Luger, Hogan, Taker etc. The main theme, of course, is that Hogan is a narcissistic $cumb@g, but they do a great job of diving into the event as a whole too, and how they made it happen. Fun watch, would recommend.

The positive I see here is that all the matches which H hasn’t invested in will end up getting over, similar to how he always wanted to position himself, but it always back fired in the grand scheme and he was never the top guy, always the guy who jobbed to the real top guy when it mattered.

It’s on my list, looks great, an interesting side plot, Nick Khan worked security for that WM; the epitome of the American dream really! He’s the slickest man in any kind of entertainment business and at the centre of WWE’s success.

I don't think Randy vs Fiend was as bad as everyone calls it. It just had a wrong winner. Apart from that, it was much better than his matches against Seth and Goldberg.

That MITB match was a good comic relief. Gets unnecessary flak IMO. Although they could have given the bank to someone other than Otis who couldn't even get to cash it. Jeff vs Sheamus Bar fight was stupid but fun. Broken Matt vs Bray (Hardy Compound) was pretty good as well even though it happened much earlier than the pandemic era.

Nah I think it was. Orton burned Fiend to a crisp, then he came back as this melted down Fiend who wanted to get his revenge. Only for Orton to beat him in 4 minutes with one RKO at WrestleMania. That was the final nail in the coffin for that character.

Yeah they showed that. Very cool how far he has come.

One of the best backstage brawls I’ve seen in some time:

The Italian Mob family are fantastic lol

I don’t see the point of this, is he looking to get himself over opposed to his own roster ? Transitioning to an on-screen character ?

I don’t know if Tony Khan has ever attacked his ticket paying audience, he does dorky interviews where he gives you nothing but don’t think he has ever buried his own audience.

@shaz619 Thoughts on Josh Alexander? We talk about Gable being the spiritual successor to the Kurt Angle pure wrestler persona, but I feel like this guy fits the bill just as well, if not more. Haven't seen that much of him, but I have seen some of his best matches in TNA and personally I think he is really good. He's made the decision to go to AEW which means he likely won't reach the peaks that he could have reached in WWE but still I reckon he has to be one of the better technical wrestlers going around these days.

Wrestling brothers, if you could travel back in time to watch any Wrestlemania live, front row seat with your homies, which Wrestlemania you picking.

I am picking Wrestlemania XX

Benoit wins triple threat vs HHH & Michaels
Benoit - Eddie moment
Undertaker returns as Dead Man 🔥 Brock vs Goldberg
Evolution vs The Rock & Sock
Eddie vs Kurt Angle
Chain Gang Cena vs Big Show
Christian vs Jericho feat Trish Stratus :yk3

If am honest I’ve not paid too much attention to him, was he in a tag team with Ethan Page? If he can be compared to Angle he must be very good. I think at his age, it’s not a terrible move going to AEW, I feel like he lacks the name value of other stars from a similar period as him, it’s not impossible but would be very tough for him in WWE; but then there are guys who they push that are very green and having a seasoned guy has its benefits. LA Knight might not have had the management’s favour but cream rises to the top, and for many years you knew his name and how good he was, similar to Nick Aldis / Magnus.

I wont think twice to say this, it would be WM 21:

I get to witness the greatest match in the history of the sport in HBK vs Angle, this is the match for me, if I was on an Island all by myself and there was one match I could take with me then this would be it.

I get to see the first MITB ladder match, a terrific opener between Rey/Eddie, I get to see H get beat like a kutha all over the ring as the era as me and my school mates become the biggest Batista marks out there, Cena wins his first title and you even get a cat fight between Trish & Christy Hemme; sorry no evening gown match for you but this will do it for me 🐸

Then there are segments on the card to which made WM special such as Show vs Akebono & one of the greatest Piper’s pits of all time with Austin as the chief guest; we dreamed of this interaction for years, this was the equivalent of Austin / Punk sharing the same ring.

Orton came of age to in what I reckon is his best match at mania with the Undertaker.

This PPV was the peak of my childhood lust for pro-wrestling and every minute of this card lives rent free in my mind, I secretly ordered it at an Uncles house on PPV, in those days you press a button and it’s yours on Sky so long you have a phone line, we did that me and my cousins for a few event, not sure if my Uncle just let us or just thought oh another odd phone bill :yk3

CM Punk already vocalized his support for Palestine as well months ago. Which may seem little but considering how 99% of celebs are scared crapless to even mention it, let alone support, he’s done enough to stand up for what’s right in a position of fame. What has Cena done? Oh yeah, simp for China and take back his comment on Taiwan 🤡

On Cena it’s funny you mention him because I just shared a tweet where he says he loves Vince you can add that to his list and that Taiwan comment made me laugh more then it should have 🤣 I just started picturing him apologising and the whole thing was beyond hilarious. CM Punk is the one guy in wrestling who we don’t need to worry about going to the dark side, I keep politics out of wrestling, but Punk is rarely on the wrong side of history and it’s a big part of who he is and why we love him, it’s the authenticity. He really is Taylor Swift for the male 18+ demo lol Punk gives zero F’s, he risks so much with his stance but he is using his position to his benefit, and that to me just takes his drawing power beyond some of WWE’s biggest stars ever.

He posted pictures of pro-Palestinian graffiti during the European tour aswell. Punk is always on the right side of history. Which just increases your respect for him. Didn't sell-out by going to Saudi either though I am sure they offered him a dump truck of cash for those PPVs.

I'm going to change my answer to 21 aswell. Knowing what we know about Benoit, I don't want to witness that piece of $hit's moment in the sun. Which is a shame because that's probably one of my favorite wrestling matches ever. But I feel like that entire Mania is tainted now because of him.

He's in AEW now so I guess he will be shoved down our throat till Tony doesn't know what to do with him. Don't wanna compare him to Angle because how can you compare anyone to Angle? But he feels like a spiritual successor to that persona/style like Chad Gable. Interested to see how he does here.

I have always respected his guts.

It was a near perfect PPV card and the fact that it was in MSG only made it better. Because that's hardcore wrestling fan territory, not to mention one of the most fabled arenas in the history of pro-wrestling. Goldberg v Brock was so funny lol. The way the fans just s**t all over that match. I was watching it back a few years back and I LOLed at them waiting like 5 mins to start the match because of how loud the boos were. In the end Austin had to give them a stunner to get the fans to pop.

Christian v Jericho was one of the more underrated matches on the card. The swerve at the end was fantastic. They did a really good job with that storyline.
