This is just temporary for now, before Junaids gets too excited!
What I think is likely to happen is Smith and Warner will both be suspended for a period of time - Smith longer than Warner. Then both will return and Smith will be captain again.
Smith has no chance of ever Captaining Australia again.
Hold your horses a little bit. He's just stand-in captain at the moment.
No decision has been taken regarding the long term captaincy for the time being.
It doesn’t really matter.
It’s an astonishing career resurrection.
He didn’t play a Test for 7 years due to a catastrophic finger fracture, he struggled to adapt his batting to his busted bones and nerves, and at the start of this season he was Tasmania’s reserve wicketkeeper!
Year after year we have had to endure that idiot Wade behind the stumps, with all the positive personality attributes of Dave Warner. Or Nevill, a man so meek that he couldn’t lead the team in the field.
Now we have a top quality glovesman, who leads his fielding unit like a grown up. And bats sensibly too.
How has his captaincy been thus far? If he wants to make this a permanent elevation, a big score is needed.
Tim Paine and Pat Cummins are the missing links for Australia.
Each robbed by injury of probably 70 Tests between 2011 and 2018.
The two smartest men in the team, the two deepest thinkers, two men who appreciate the spirit of cricket.
It’s a real life fairy tale for Tim Paine.
Hi Junaids
What are his credentials in domestic cricket? Any big achievements? Leadership experience? He did do well in India.
From the looks of it, he may be just the 'Misbah' Australia needs![]()
Congrats to him. We all thought his international career was over a few months ago. Now he is leading Australia.
Tim Paine was recognised as a mature player with leadership skills from junior levels onwards.Hi Junaids

Which is actually a good thing for Australia overall - he was aloof and a middling skipper at best.
Not saying Paine is the one, but surely Australia have to look for someone more intelligent than Smith and Warner.
Well from what we saw today he can contribute well with the bat.He can easily last till the next Ashes, barring injury.I wish Paine all the best but just how long will he last? Captaining and keeping well won't be enough and if he doesn't contribute with the bat he'll soon be dropped. His domestic stats suggest that he's pretty poor with the bat (one century in 100 first class matches).
Situation is really desperate there, I guess. Normally, AUS doesn't appoint Fast Bowlers or WKs as Captain, but now 1-2-3 are WK, fast bowler & fast bowling all-rounder.
Paine is a superb keeper and would have played 100 Tests were it not for his terrible hand injury.Sounds unbelievable to find Australia struggling to find a half decent WK. This is the same land which has produced legends like Gilly, Rod Marsh & Healy!
A true captain's knock by Paine today. Junaids will be a very proud man today.
I certainly am!
I’ve admired Tim Paine for many years, and feared that his career was ruined like Shane Bond and Ian Bishop....

Just a temporary stand in captain. A player who never wouldnt have even gotten to the playing 11 had it not been due to the sand paper gate.
Yes, paine is nowhere near the best aussie wkt batsman ever matthew wade.Just a temporary stand in captain. A player who never wouldnt have even gotten to the playing 11 had it not been due to the sand paper gate.

Wade gets in as a pure batsman, not as a keeper though. He is one of the worst keepers out there shelling chances for fun. Paine is the better player as a keeper-bat.

Agreed, Paine is a class wicket keeper, the team is just too weak, bowlers are not doing much, batting is weak, hes in a tough spot. Would like him to get a 50 to save the game here for Oz.
Wade was a horrible keeper, but if he scoring runs perhaps should be in the squad as a batsman
I could have come up with a fairly coherent Top Six for Australia:He should absolutely be there as a batter since he has done well in shield cricket. Moronic selections have cost Australia this series. Burns, Patterson, Wade, Maxwell have scored runs but are not in the squad. Meanwhile, Labuschagne averages 28 in Shield season and is number 3! The Marsh brothers have got multiple chances despite showing that they don't have what it takes to succeed. Marcus Harris got runs in Shield cricket and unsurprisingly, he is the best batsman for Australia (Though still not good enough). Handscomb got picked in the XI based on his BBL work.
Selectors have also possibly ended Finch's test career by playing him as an opener when he actually got runs as a middle order player for Victoria and dropping him when he inevitably failed.
Paine is hands down the better wk batsman, i was. I was trollingWade gets in as a pure batsman, not as a keeper though. He is one of the worst keepers out there shelling chances for fun. Paine is the better player as a keeper-bat.
