My prediction: He won't stay longer than 1 year counting from today, after the thrashing that Sri Lanka just received.

I'm asking this, because Mickey Arthur has a history of getting sacked from almost all his coaching stints.

1. Sacked from Australian cricket team. (homework gate)

2. Sacked from Karachi Kings. (team lost ALL PSL editions)

3. Sacked from Pakistan cricket team. (team started losing home Tests)

.....And now, yet another feather in his cap. England just whitewashed Sri Lanka at their home.

What's your prediction?

Sri Lanka is not as deluded as we are, thinking we're ought to be top 3 side while we lounge 7th in the rankings.

As long as the team is fighting like they did in this series then i don't see why Sri Lanka will jump to remove him. They are currently doing respectably despite being in an obvious rebuild and suffering the recent loss of their superstars. Until that changes he'll keep his job.

This Srl is probably as bad as Zimbabwe is right now.

Pretty poor team compares to the past. Same thing is happening with Pakistan team, Talent is lacking in the current players. Tough time ahead for Srl and Pakistan Team. Not Mickey fault if team can’t even Bat well in their own home conditions.

Sri Lanka still has their mainstay players like:

Lakmal
Mendis
Perera

etc.

This shambolic display of cricket is far from fighting. You don't let a foreign side chase a 4th innings total in Asian conditions.

Simply too poor.

Imagine Pakistan getting whitewashed at their home.. can you imagine the massive fallout?

There was no strategy, no tactics, and that was really sad to see.

Pakistan doesn't have any bowling depth now, the unit is terrible. SL still had Lakmal, Mendis, etc., their main bowlers.

A whitewash at home in Asia by a SENA team is a massive cause for concern.

Herath is the only one who retired in last 3 years. Before Mickey, Srl did well to white wash SA in SA, SA in Srl, Aus in Srl, Pak in UAE, BD in BD and to draw a series against NZ in Srl in last 4-5 years. Also I am not sure about the fight in this series especially in terms of batting as Srl was bowled out for under 150 twice in 4 innings in the series at home.

I dont think Srl would accept these recent performances too happily as they obviously went to Mickey expecting improvement and build upon the team which Hathurusingha tried to create. Will have to wait and see how the white ball cricket of Srl goes going forward.

Mickey will be given more time but, the start is far from ideal.

Average coach gets average results, quelle surprise!

Arthur won't even get a job at a top tier county. Contrary to the hyperbole on here, he has no development track record to point towards since leaving South Africa.

Tbh Mickey and Grant wanted the Pakistani jobs more than the Sri Lankan one. I detect that they both accepted the Sri Lankan job because of no other options

Interestingly. England have won their last 6 Test matches in Sri Lanka.

Bigger question is why did the Sri Lankans appoint Arthur and Grant Flower, unlike Pakistan they had so many different choices, these two in comparison did not have much of a track record

Yep. The squad overall is quite experienced. With some great wins under their belt.

I'm not sure how long a rope Mickey would get here.

Not sure how Mickey managed to sell himself to the Lankans..

Quite surprising.

I would want results at least on home grounds after hiring an expensive coach.

Your hero Misbah should get the boot before MA does.

I am surprised they let go of Hathurasinghe, i think with the limited resources Sri Lanka had, he helped them punch above their weight. Mickey Arthur has only taken them down further. Arthur was also very passionate and excited about the Pakistan job, in comparison his enthusiasm for the Sri Lankan job is non-existent, he sold his Pakistan experience to get the Sri Lankans to hire him and he obviously needed a job but Sri Lanka was not his first choice employer.

Can anyone tell me what Mickey Arthur does really well as a coach? Because I tend to think that Mickey's greatest asset is his personal projection. He does very good job of demonstrating his contempt for bad performance in public. The fans and media love this. But does he have any solutions. Is he a coach that improves performance? Develops players? Identifies talent?

Not sure i'd agree. Shaheen and Babar came through under his wing, Pakistan got to number 1 in the t20 rankings, he won the CT and managed a decent performance in the 2019 WC.

The 2019 WC is interesting because if we were to play that tournament again today, just 2 years later, we'd likely get utterly destroyed.

The fact that we've gone backwards in a relatively short space of time without any major player losses shows that Mickey did achieve something for Misbah to go backwards from.

First of all,.T20 cricket means nothing. Let's get that straight. In addition, that no 1 ranking was when no team cared about that format and played their C team to try out new players.

Now, Mickey massively failed in Tests. He destroyed the UAE fortress that Misbah had built, losing to SL and NZ in the UAE. You can't get more embarassing than that. His idea of picking few.spinnets and fake all rounders like Shadab in tests was ridiculous.

Finally, the CT was good. No doubts about that. However the 2 years after that in ODIs were awful beyond words. We lost an embarassing amlunt of games, including our worst losing streak of all time, where we lost 14 games in a row. Also, we lost the 2018 Asia cup in a pathetic manner, collapsing against a weak Bangladesh team missing their best players. The WC started off horribly and it took Mickey half the WC to figure out the best XI, and frankly his backing of rubbish like Shoaib Malik and Asif Ali was ridiculous. Indeed, we ended the WC on a high but the damage had been done already.

Now, please, try to tell me Mickey was a good coach. I'll be waiting here.

Sri Lanka should build their set up around Mahela, Sangakarra, and Murali. So much experience and knowledge on the table yet these three aren’t involved in senior Sri Lankan cricket at all as far as I’m aware.

Pakistan are making use of Misbah, Younis, Waqar etc; India are using Dravid, Ganguly etc yet the Sri Lankan’s are doing the opposite with their legends.

Misbah fan boys and their delusional thinking. How about we compare Mickey and Misbah as coaches? Head to head stats?

That's a disgrace how could such a world beater team like Sri Lanka get white washed by such a poor English team

Oh yeah it's Mickey 🤣🤣🤣

Sri Lankan board is highly corrupt, full of Chamchas of sports minister and politicians. School cricket and domestic foundations of Sri Lanka are pretty strong and they start playing school cricket with hard ball at young age.
From Vaas to Gurusinhe to Sanga to Mahela, Angelo, Chandimal all come from School cricket.

But, their management is full of brash and stupid politicians. Mahela and Sangakkara had given up on them even in their playing days.
They both are getting great oppurtunities in IPL and I feel Lasith Malinga will follow suit as well. Murali as well.
On top of that, Ranatunga and Jayasuriya, great cricketers they were also turned out to be corrupt. So, less hope for poor Srl Fans.

I think Mickey is at right place with right team at right level of expectations.
Its their batting which has disappointed a lot. They need some mental tweaks of going big in test matches.

What's your prediction?

One little correction.

He wasn't actually sacked from Pakistan's coaching job. He completed his tenure.
His contract wasn't renewed despite of his desire to continue as Pakistan's head coach.

Can anyone tell me what Mickey Arthur does really well as a coach? Because I tend to think that Mickey's greatest asset is his personal projection. He does very good job of demonstrating his contempt for bad performance in public. The fans and media love this.

That reminds me, "We're a proud team and we hate losing". Mamoon

After every loss he repeated this, even more after our home Test losses.. and the public absolutely loved Mickey playing to the gallery. Even though he kept making us lose Tests even at home.. abroad he made us lose all.

Of course Markhor Rana Slim would do anything to bury his miserable record.

Babar and Shaheen coming through is a case of Arthur being in the right place at the right time. A lot of players regressed on his watch too.

The CT was a complete fluke, and international T20 cricket is frankly an irrelevance.

At the end of the day, I won't argue that Misbah is a better coach than Arthur, however, that shouldn't necessarily imply that Arthur is a good international coach. He has crashed and burned in all of his jobs since leaving South Africa and that's compelling enough for me to conclude that he's incompetent.

Misbah would be sacked in 6 months if he was SL coach. Before criticising Micky, check how bad is hero Misbah is.

Before putting your hopes up on MA getting the sack, why not compare his record to your beloved Misbah at Pakistan first?

Yeah Mickey's a bad coach - he should go take some lessons from Misbah-ul-Mourinho and Waqar Guardiola instead for some tips.

Hawkeye, was watching Mickey Arthur press conference after the 2nd test against England. These are some gems he said

“We don’t accept mediocrity, we don’t accept losing “.
“From failures, good things can come”.
“I believe we can win every game”.
“I’m a winner”.

:))) :))).

I swear Mickey loves making these type of statements and is an expert at it.

So is Misbah now winning them all is it?? What a refreshing change to have Misbah replace Mickey..

Sri Lanaka would not make Misbah a coach.

He is simply not good enough to coach at any level.

Too much Mickey bashing going on.

We wouldn't have a world class player in Babar if not for Mickey. Under Misbah-Waqar, he would have been batting at 6 in LOIs to accommodate oldies in the top order and thrown away from the test side after initial failures.

What's your prediction?

Do you understand the definition of sacked? Why would you start a thread with blatant lies to suit your agenda.

At least write the truth. Unless you have proof he was ‘SACKED’ from the Pakistan job and the Karachi kings job?

Bump.

If this was Mickey we'd have lost this test. With 3 pavers playing, Asad Shafiq still in the team,.trying.to.play attacking shots, etc.

Not a fan of Misbah but Mickey was awful in Asia. Just look at SL. Losing 2-0 to a mediocre England team at home after winning BOTH tosses. Embarassing.

Bump.

Mickey dumped all of SL good players and picked a squad full of mediocre youngsters. Now they are even losing to Bangladesh.

Bad loss that one for Mickey's side.

Looking at the Sri Lankan team at the moment they look a pretty mediocre group.

They've lost all 4 ODIs in 2021.

Today's defeat to Bangladesh and 3 losses to West Indies.

They may do slightly well in the wt20i but will keep getting thrashed in the bilaterals.
The only player who may come out of it stronger and better will probably be Wanindu Hasaranga.
That's how sides affiliated with Mickey go about.

Of all the options, he picked the worst among them to name a new captain. Thisara or Shanaka should have been given captaincy if they were so insistent on taking it away from Dimuth.

Sri Lanka have a pretty good metric for assessing how good the captain and coach are. Just assess how they utilize Thisara Perera.

Thisara looked and performed like a totally different player under Jayawardene/Ford and Sangakkara/Bayliss. After that his brief spike came under Hathurusingha.

Mickey's been good enough to send him into retirement. :))

Got whitewashed in WI ODIs and now on the verge of losing series in BD.

As I have maintained for almost 2-3 years now, Mickey at max is an average coach and there is nothing in his achievements list to prove otherwise. Yes did well with SA and formed a good combo with Greame Smith (Not to forget he was a strong captain), in terms of highlights in white-ball cricket as an international coach Pak winning CT 17 and being no 1 in T20Is is the best he has done and possibly will ever do.

When you give an average coach a struggling team, results are going to be pretty ugly and that is what we are seeing in his tenure with Srl.

Last 18 matches across all formats since 4th March 2020:

Lost 13
Won 2
Drawn 3

Not looking good now for him - especially if you look at the fact that Sri Lanka do have good options when it comes to overseas coaches coming to work for them.

This SL team is very ordinary. A coach can only do so much.

Yes, look a shadow of some of their great sides.

What on earth has happened, because they look mediocre in all formats now.

I think average is a far too good rating for him, even at max.

He has done nothing of note since his stint as SA coach barring winning the CT which wasn't solely down to him.

Won't be long before he is sacked. Disappointed he hasn't aided the development of Kusal Mendis who I thought would turn into a class batsmen under Arthur.

There's only so much you can do with minnow quality players. It's not as if SL were doing great before Arthur. Their ODI record since 2015 has been atrocious.

I believe they appointed Tom Moody as DoC.. MA and TM good combo to have but looks to be lankan players taking it very easy, no intent to fight..

The team selection has been a gamble that didnt pay off. The 2 new batsmen have an average of around 30 and SR of less than 80 in List A, nothing to write home about, while Dickwella is sat outside the 11. Hasaranga seems to be the lone shining star and can become a pivotal all rounder for them in the future.

Mickey not a happy bunny after latest lost to India in ODI!

"Meanwhile Mickey Arthur couldn’t believe his eyes as he saw his team make one blunder after the other. He was seen cursing, and venting his frustration at the local official."

Not fit to be a coach of any team.

His time is up. He reminds me of my Unc who was a fauji but i think he's gone somewhat off the track since his retirement and social media has brought the worst of him.

Not at all.

There is still visible talent in Sri Lankan cricket and they can realistically taret #6 rank

Lol, Mickey Arthur as usual sweet talking his way out of trouble. Its only a matter of time before even the Sri Lankans see through his **

He's a terrible coach in Asia, and hence would be a terrible choice for coach for asian teams given they play most their games there. Sri Lanka were just hoping he'd remake the miracle of CT17 with Pakistan, probably the only reason they hired him. And his conduct/speeches are just unprofessional and he doesn't keep his emotions together.

It was certainly the right decision to sack him, he's been downhill since CT17 and he was failing with both Pakistan and PSL when he got sacked. Whether you like Misbah or not (I'm not that impressed yet), it was right to move on from Mickey, he's had enough time, and things were just getting worse not better.

Sri Lanka skipper Dasun Shanaka said Thursday that his on-field spat with coach Mickey Arthur in the second one-day international against India was about tactics.

Speaking for the first time about the animated exchange of words caught on camera soon after losing the three-match series to India on Tuesday, Shanaka said Arthur should not have done it publicly.

"This is something that should have happened in the dressing room," Shanaka told reporters in Colombo. "He (Arthur) wanted to know if I deviated from the agreed plan and I said no."

He said the coach questioned if he had changed tactics they had agreed before the match.

"There was no heated exchange," Shanaka said. "I explained what happened. I said I did not change plans and there was no deviation."

India passed Sri Lanka's 275-9 with five balls to spare in Colombo on Tuesday to record a win that gave it a 2-0 lead in the three-match series.

Sri Lanka's South African coach was seen sharing heated words with Shanaka and gesturing at the captain on the field after the game they lost by three wickets.

He appeared to indicate that Shanaka should go with him off the field but the captain did not budge while Arthur walked away, in a video widely shared on social media.

Arthur called it a "good debate" when social media posts criticised his actions.

"It was actually a very good debate, no need to make mischief out of it," Arthur said on Twitter responding to match commentator Russel Arnold's comment that the exchange should have been held in the dressing room.

Sri Lanka went into the series with injuries and without batting coach Grant Flower, who tested positive for Covid-19 on his return with the team from a tour of England where it lost both the ODI and Twenty20 series.

From 193-7, Deepak Chahar and Bhuvneshwar Kumar put on an unbeaten stand of 84 for the eighth wicket to secure India's win.

Shanaka said Sri Lanka was hopeful of improving on its performance for the third and final ODI on Friday.

So the whole series of pathetic bowling changes and field placing were ultimately the ideas of Mickey Arthur. He proves again of his tactical ineptness.

SL players and their skill level and general attitude is just turning into a joke.

I would take Mickey over Waqar / Misbah any day of the week.

Mickey Arthur is a joke. We went to a WC without knowing our first/best eleven. Same thing happened in 2017 cup.

Appears to be a capture video so the logo will show. Anyways SLCB team representative is Mickey Arthur and has erred twice, first argued on field and now arguing on twitter (and that too against Russel?)

then he will say he wears his heart on his sleeve. I can understand his frustration but SLCB and Sri Lanka cricket is already having lot of reputation issues. Should have done this inside the dressing room.

Atleast Sri Lanka have tactics and planning, even if its failing at this point of time. Our players look like headless chickens pretty much every single game due to having an incompetent buffoon at the helm.

Hit the Nail on the Head!

Shoaib Akhtar should pick up a coaching role with Sri Lanka to teach PCB a lesson

Sri Lanka's head coach Mickey Arthur ordered the national squad off social media on Saturday after disgruntled fans launched a campaign to boycott players following a string of defeats overseas.

The South African coach said players were getting "absolutely hammered" and it was affecting their judgement and mood as they prepare for the T20 World Cup later this year.

"Some of the stuff listed there is beyond comprehensible," Arthur said ahead of Sri Lanka's three-match T20 tournament against India starting Sunday.

Sri Lanka managed to deprive India of a clean sweep of the one-day international series by winning the third and final match on Friday. Sri Lanka have now lost the last four consecutive ODI tournaments.

Sri Lanka start the T20 tournament against India from Sunday after losing five straight series, with the last defeat coming against England earlier this month.

The decision to order the squad off social media came after Sri Lankan fans initiated a campaign to boycott their own players on Facebook and Twitter.

"My advice to the guys is just stay off it. You get absolutely hammered on it," Arthur said. "There is only one way to handle it and that is not to look.

"So my best advice is just get over it because there are some idiots there who think they know exactly what's going on, when in fact they know nothing."

He said players should take his example of not engaging on social media and said he only signed up to Twitter in April last year because of a coronavirus lockdown.

But Arthur took to Twitter himself on Wednesday to deny that he had a spat with skipper Dasun Shanaka after they lost the second ODI to India this week.

"It was actually a very good debate, no need to make mischief out of it!" Arthur said on Twitter.

Shanaka later told reporters that the bust-up was about tactics.

Another disappointing result for Mickey coming up.
