Similar to the size of Wankhede’: ICC provides interesting insight about India vs Pakistan T20 WC venue in USA

As both India and Pakistan relive their age-old rivalry, the fans will surely look forward to it as one of the favourite clashes in the T20 World Cup.

The ICC T20 World Cup 2024 is around the corner. As the teams gear up for the biennial event in the West Indies and the United States in June, the focus will be on the centre-staging of the most classic encounters of the tournament. As arch-rivals India and Pakistan meet for the ninth time at the marquee event on June 9 at the Nassau County Stadium, ICC’s head of events, Chris Tetley has come up with an interesting insight about the venue.

“Whenever a new stadium comes up, there are a lot of questions about the size. But the Nassau County ground is not a token-sized ground - it is 75 yards east west and 67 yards north south from the centre. It is similar to the size of Wankhede. The drainage facilities, too, will be world-class," he said.

Interestingly, the venue used to be a municipal park which the ICC has transformed into a state-of-the-art cricketing facility. The stadium offers six practice pitches near the ground along with four-centre wickets and drop-in pitches that will be used in the tournament.

Damian Hough, head curator of Adelaide Oval, supervised the preparation of venue’s pitches in Florida which were later brought to New York in trucks. Hough revealed that the surface will have good pace and bounce and the idea was to produce good pitches where the players would enjoy playing.

"The pitches will have pace and bounce and the ball should come on to the bat, something that the players prefer. The idea is to produce good pitches that will stay good throughout the tournament and the players will enjoy playing on," he said.

As both India and Pakistan relive their age-old rivalry, the fans will surely look forward to it as one of the favourite clashes in the league. The last time when both the teams locked horns at the T20 World Cup was in 2022 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, where India defeated Pakistan in a thrilling battle. If the Florida-based venue manages to witness the half of what unfolded in Australia, the fans are in for a real treat.

Former India spinner Harbhajan Singh responded to a query during a show on an Indian sports media outlet:

“At the end of the day, playing against Pakistan is always (tricky) as both countries do not play much against each other. We do not know much about their strong and weak zones but the Indian management keeps track of every player and their strong and weak zones.”

“In the bowling department too, Pakistan bowlers keep themselves mentally and physically strong. These aspects will be taken care of by the Indian team. These things will come into play when both sides will battle it out on the field.”

“It also depends on what decision you take on that particular day. You know Virat Kohli plays cover drive beautifully but bowlers still check him in the same area to get an outside edge in the slip. These chances you have to take according to the conditions. It is not important how much you know about your opponent but how much you are aware of your game. That is what matters the most and everything else is basic.”

India will win as usual

India is carrying 8 or 9 out of form playera from the IPL. I am a bit skeptical. Even the inform players show signs of dip in form after squad selection.

Actually whoever loses that game will have no margin for error..

You never know if USA or Canada could spring a surprise

only surprise USA or Canada can spring is actually playing an American or Canadian born and raised in either country.

This is going to be an epic battle and it may break all the broadcast records. Still, I think, India has the upper hand but you can never right off Pakistan any day. They can come from the dust and win something that nobody was expecting. Hoping for a thriller.

Broadcasters must still be reeling from the last game between both teams Pak were 150/2 to 190 all out Ind chased with 30 overs to spare all that revenue lost.

Overrated rivalry don’t waste your time over the hill sharmas & kohlis will batter Shaheen to pulp !

'No fears' over New York T20 World Cup pitches

International Cricket Council (ICC) officials have "no fears" over the pitches being used at a temporary stadium in New York for the men's T20 World Cup.

The finishing touches are being applied to the 34,000-seat stadium in Eisenhower Park in Nassau County, east of Manhattan, with the tournament just over a fortnight away.

Four drop-in pitches are now in place at the venue which is set to host eight World Cup matches, including a highly-anticipated meeting between India and Pakistan.

Six other drop-in pitches have also been installed in nearby practice facilities.

The two other grounds in the United States being used to stage matches - in Texas and Florida - already have natural turf wickets in place.

Adelaide Oval pitch curator Damian Hough was tasked by the ICC with growing the pitches in Australia and transporting them to New York via Florida.

The Australian acknowledged the "the proof will be in the pudding", but currently has "no concerns" over the pitches as the tournament edges closer.

"Two and a half weeks out from the first game we're very happy and have nothing to worry about," said Hough.

"There's no fears. Some of the best pitches in the world are drop-in pitches. We can build them anywhere."

Chris Tetley, head of events at the ICC, said the playing field at the stadium was "not a token size" but a "fully-fledged international standard cricket ground" with dimensions of 75 yards east and west, and 67 yards north and south.

"We are around about as big as the Gabba, or The Oval or Wankhede Stadium in terms of playing area," he added.

@Bhaag Viru Bhaag - which team you think will win on 9th June and most importantly which team you will be supporting on this upcoming El-Classico?

:kp

Anyone not going and has a spare ticket?

Can’t find them anywhere they’re selling for outrageous prices in black.

I've seen the prices and it seems astronomical.

Hope you manage to find a well priced ticket

Both teams have an average squad but as India would be playing a warm up in the same ground before this clash thus they would have a great advantage here.

So, how's the mental prep going PPers?
Can't wait for this battle. Potential semi-finalists will clash so it will be a final before the final type of game. Will set the tone nicely for the team that is going to win this encounter. 70-30 India though.

My birthday wishes towards Pakistan winning.

But honestly India wins, Pakistan isn't in any condition to win. I hope PP gets to celebrate a victory though. But ik it's unlikely to happen.

After looking at the performance of team Pakistan today against England, the only chance Pakistan have in this match is to restrict India under 160 and then chase down this target. May be we get a chance to see a dream spell from one of our pace bowlers that usually happen in these big games when Pakistan win.

T20 World Cup in US going to be landmark event: India's Consul General in New York Pradhan

The T20 World Cup in the US is a "landmark event" and there is huge excitement among the diaspora as well as across America, India's envoy here said emphasising that the tournament is playing a "very significant role" in bringing cricket to the country's mainstream and will further contribute towards the bilateral people-to-people relationship.

"This is the first time we are having a (cricket) World Cup being played on US soil. There is huge excitement, not only among the Indian diaspora members but even in the United States," Consul General of India in New York Binaya Srikanta Pradhan told PTI here in an exclusive conversation ahead of the much-anticipated tournament.

He said American congressmen, senators, elected representatives are talking about the T20 Cricket World Cup being held in the US.

The T20 World Cup is being jointly hosted by the USA and the West Indies from June 2 to June 29. The Indian cricket team, which has departed India for New York, will begin its campaign against Ireland on June 5 at the newly-constructed Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York.

India will face arch-rivals Pakistan on June 9, followed by matches against co-hosts USA (June 12) and Canada (June 15) in their Group A matches. India had won the inaugural edition way back in 2007 in South Africa.

"I am sure this is going to be a landmark event," Pradhan said. "Team India represents India in more than one way. There is huge excitement, not only in the community, but even in the Indian Consulate," Pradhan said, adding that "we are looking forward to welcome them and will be there to cheer for them, and they will have fun here." India will play three matches in New York -- versus Ireland, Pakistan and the United States. "This is the first time India will be playing with the American team. So it's a truly momentous occasion," he said.

On the fever-pitch anticipation for the match between India and Pakistan, Pradhan said tickets for the game were sold out months before the tournament, with a lot of visitors from India expected to travel to New York especially for the match. "There is huge excitement," he said, adding that several very distinguished people from the Indian diaspora, American public would be watching this match. "So we're also looking forward to that," he said. Cricket is not a mainstream sport in the US, which has traditionally been a baseball, American football, basketball, ice hockey, and soccer-playing nation.

Members of the diaspora from the Indian sub-continent as well as those belonging to other cricket-playing nations such as the West Indies and Australia play the sport in the US but usually on temporary, make-do pitches on baseball fields, in parks and on school sports fields during the summer months.

Pradhan said that the T20 World Cup is playing a "very significant role in promoting cricket in mainstream United States." In the run-up to the World Cup, the Consulate General of India in New York released a special video highlighting the comparison and similarities between cricket and baseball to "inform the American audience that they should look forward to this game and this sport is very much similar in some ways to baseball." Pradhan said the response the Consulate has received has been tremendous.

Noting that cricket at the moment is very popular among the Indian diaspora, Pradhan referred to the professional Twenty20 cricket league in the United States Major Premier League and the Minor Premier League. "It's already catching up in the diaspora. But I'll not be surprised if in a few years' time, you will find the American -- not the Indian-origin Americans, but the Americans will be playing cricket as a mainstream game," he said. Pradhan noted that cricket infrastructure, including proper stadiums are now coming up in the US, as he cited the Nassau County stadium where India will play three matches. He said he was recently in the New York State capital of Albany where he saw a cricket stadium. "I'm told in many parts of the United States, both on the East Coast and the West Coast, there are cricket stadiums which are coming up," and many less used baseball stadiums are also being converted to cricket stadiums.

"It's only a matter of few years when you will find infrastructure for cricket (in the US), which would be as developed as we have in our country," he said. As a diplomatic establishment, the Indian Consulate has invited the political leadership from the 10 East coast states that it serves as well as some members of the India Caucus, including congressmen and senators to come and watch the India-United States match on June 12. "Because I feel it would be appropriate that they come and they cheer both the Indian team and the American team. We will also be cheering for both the teams. So the 12th June match is special for me as a diplomatic establishment when India and American teams will be playing," he said. "Of course, the other matches are important. India-Pakistan match has always remained the centre point," Pradhan said.

He added that he is looking forward personally to welcoming many American dignitaries who would "join us to watch the India-US match." "India-US relationship has reached a point of inflection, where it's not limited to government-to-government cooperation. All stakeholders are actively participating in it," he said underlining that it is good that sports is now coming up in a big way, "contributing towards the people-to-people relationship."

Will be a one sided Indian victory
Pakistan have no chance in this
I am worried about Ireland game as we could even get knocked out after first round.

India
India enter the T20 World Cup with a burning desire to shatter their streak of near misses in world events, having come agonisingly close in recent tournaments only to falter at the final hurdle.

With a formidable squad at full strength, India now stands poised to reclaim the elusive title they last clinched in the inaugural edition back in 2007.

Under the seasoned leadership of Rohit Sharma, who embarks on his second stint as captain in the T20 World Cup, the team boasts a formidable top-order line-up featuring the likes of Yashasvi Jaiswal, Virat Kohli and Suryakumar Yadav.

Rishabh Pant and Sanju Samson are currently in scintillating form, presenting a pleasant dilemma for Rohit and the team management in selecting the wicket-keeper for the World Cup campaign.

India's all-round prowess is further bolstered by the likes of Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel and Shivam Dube, providing depth and versatility to the squad. The bowling department boasts formidable talent with the presence of Jasprit Bumrah, Yuzvendra Chahal, Kuldeep Yadav and others, ensuring a well-rounded line-up.

India take on Ireland in their tournament opener on 5 June before the focus shifts to the epic clash against Pakistan on 9 June in New York.

Squad

Rohit Sharma (c), Hardik Pandya, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant, Sanju Samson, Shivam Dube, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal, Arshdeep Singh, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj

Fixtures

vs USA – Wed, 12 June 2024, New York, 10:30 AM local time
vs Canada – Sat, 15 June 2024, Florida, 10:30 AM local time

Key Player – Jasprit Bumrah

India will be bolstered by the return of Jasprit Bumrah, who was sidelined during the previous edition of the T20 World Cup in 2022 due to injury.

Since his comeback, Bumrah has reaffirmed his indispensable role in the team, showcasing his prowess with 20 wickets in 11 matches during the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 held at home.

His T20 form has been sensational as well, picking up 20 wickets in 13 matches for the Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League, despite the team struggling in the tournament.

Bumrah's repertoire of skills knows no bounds, and in the unique conditions of the USA and the Windies, where India plays their group stage matches, his ability to vary his deliveries will prove instrumental.

Exclusive: Ricky Ponting on the India coaching job | ICC Review
In the conversation for the India coaching job, Ricky Ponting addresses speculation as India look beyond the #T20WorldCup

Pakistan
Pakistan, much like their counterparts India, have been tantalisingly close to clinching an ICC trophy, having reached the semi-finals and final in the last two editions of the T20 World Cup.

With the disappointment of those near misses driving them, Babar Azam leads Pakistan into the upcoming tournament with a fervent desire to end their trophy drought.

Babar and Mohammad Rizwan have been linchpins of the Pakistan batting line-up for years and will be supported by Saim Ayub, Fakhar Zaman and Iftikhar Ahmed.

Pakistan have a variety of spin-bowling options in Shadab Khan, Imad Wasim and Abrar Ahmed to go with the abundance of riches in the pace bowling department.

Spearheaded by Shaheen Afridi, the team in green have an admirable pace battery with the presence of Naseem Shah, Haris Rauf, Mohammad Amir and Abbas Afridi.

Pakistan take on co-hosts USA in their opening clash on 6 June before facing off against India in a much-awaited clash on 9 June.

Squad

Babar Azam (c), Abrar Ahmed, Azam Khan, Fakhar Zaman, Haris Rauf, Iftikhar Ahmed, Imad Wasim, Mohammad Abbas Afridi, Mohammad Amir, Mohammad Rizwan, Naseem Shah, Saim Ayub, Shadab Khan, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Usman Khan

Fixtures

vs Canada – Tue, 11 June 2024, New York, 10:30 AM local time
vs Ireland – Sun, 16 June 2024, Florida, 10:30 AM local time

Key Player – Babar Azam

Babar Azam has navigated through a turbulent period in recent months, beginning with Pakistan's disappointing campaign in the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023, where they managed only four wins in nine games, leading to an early exit from the group stages.

He was since removed as captain and reinstated as well, tasked with the responsibility of leading Pakistan’s charge at the T20 World Cup under new leadership.

At the forefront of Pakistan's batting line-up, Babar has been a consistent force, accumulating 3987 runs in 118 matches at an impressive average of 41.10 and a strike rate of 129.91. He has the experience of leading Pakistan in ICC events, taking the team to the semi-final and final in the last two editions under his leadership.

While scrutiny persists over his strike rate, Babar's unwavering presence at the crease has often laid the groundwork for Pakistan's successes in recent years, highlighting his importance to the team's fortunes.

Pro-ISIS group post chilling warning ahead of T20 World Cup game between India and Pakistan in New York

There are renewed fears of terrorist attacks at this year's T20 World Cup after a chilling poster was released hinting at bloodshed in New York.

A pro-ISIS outlet released a graphic which showed a hooded man with a rifle over his shoulder. It read 'You wait for the matches...' and then - written in dripping blood-red - 'And we wait for you...'

The poster makes reference to June 9 at 'Nassau Stadium', which is when - and where - bitter rivals India and Pakistan will meet in a group game.

It also includes images of drones flying over the stadium and stick of dynamite with a ticking clock. DailyMail.com understands, however, that the poster has not prompted US authorities to raise the threat level of an attack.

A spokesperson for the International Cricket Council (ICC) said in a statement: 'The safety and security of everyone at the event is our No 1 priority and we have a comprehensive and robust security plan in place.

'We work closely with authorities in our host countries and continually monitor and evaluate the global landscape to ensure appropriate plans are in place to mitigate any risks identified to our event.'

The T20 tournament is being held in the United States and the Caribbean between June 1 and June 29.

There will be eight matches held at a newly-erected temporary stadium in Eisenhower Park - 30 miles east of Manhattan.

They include the standout game of the group stages, when India and Pakistan collide in a sold-out clash at the 34,000 Nassau County International Cricket Stadium.

The ICC previously played down fears of a terrorist threat to the tournament following reports that Islamic State had encouraged attacks.

BCCI have been trying to play down Pakistan for more than a decade now but they all know Pakistan's participation is the jewel in the crown of cricket. One of the biggest events in global sport not just cricket. More views than the superbowl. Equal to a football final like the last Euros.

One day PCB will demand their fair share, it's only a matter of time when the economy wakes up, it doesn't stay winter forever.

Not just PCB, the other boards also need to generate their fair share. Right now everyone is complacent. Just happy to take BCCI money. Including the ICC.

All of them need get off their rear end and work for their paychecks. It has come to a point that 90% is coming from India. This creates an imbalance in power.

ICC can easily take actions against BCCI. But they will not. One of the main reasons for this imbalance of power is ICC's refusal to accept reduction in revenues. They don't want to even imagine a cricketing world without Ind. money. Because that involves them working to generate money.

Accept the lower revenues, budget accordingly. Then work to increase your revenues over time. No one wants to do this.

Two teams with outdated t20 approach and none deserve to win the t20wc. Best is they reach SFs and then get hammered by one of aus eng wi sa. And then the winner of this match gloats over the victory and the useless washed senior tuk tuk guys continue to play on.

For Ind cricket health- i hope pak beats Ind this game - believe thats the only way the senior tuk tuks rohit kohli klrahul jadeja pandya chahal- are thrown out of Ind t20 team forever. Don't want a 2022 t20wc kohli type of knock- they will milk that knock and win for the longest time even though they promptly will be smashed in the KO games

As a Pakistan Team fan, I would want Pakistan to win, but the reality is that India has the upper hand. 70-30 in India's favor.

Want Pakistan to fight like hell till the last ball and the win-lose won't matter in the end if you go down fighting.

Pakistan's tail literally starts at no 5.

It's just babar, Fakhar and rizwan really.

Everyone Else is useless. Imad is good but he's useless at 8. Crap squad at its finest

Pakistan is favourite to win as indian team have Rohit , Kohli ,Jadeja who are Not belong to T20 cricket now
Indian bowling apart from bumrah and kuldeep is not threatening at all . Siraj is hit and miss only perform once in ten games.

He's right though. Pakistan haven't got a chance in hell against India.

Imad, Amir, Kamran and many of us fans don't worship people like misbah, Babar and don't give a kahoot. Better things to do then to buy a statue and start idol worship

Our weakest team in ages. Kohli and Rohit should had sat this out, irrespective of how much they score, they are destroying the T20 team balance.
50-50 because Pakistan is also bad, just one thing in their favor that they will have the required rest needed.

They have too much rest and would short on match practice. India is going to play 2-3 matches in Eisenhower Park stadium, so they would be more acclimatized compared to Pakistan.

"Battle" lmao..

Mate it's just a made up silly game with sticks and balls.

This is an inconsequential match for both teams as they are likely to win other matches to advance through to next round. THis is just for bragging rights. Pressure will be less for both sides from that point. Ofcourse crowd pressure will be there.

Tbf that is Kohli’s best ever innings in t20s currently.

But you are right.

So, you think cricket is just a silly game with sticks and balls? Then why are you on a cricket forum? Looking for pizza recipes? 😆 :inti

Uhmmm... because I like this silly game of sticks and balls?

Your comment reminds of Lagann where the British officer face palmed after Aamir Khan called the game Gilly Danda.

The streak is broken. So even if India lose it will hurt, but a bit lesser. If earlier it was 100%, the level of hurt now will be 80%. Pakistan is a great T20 side and they can pull a surprise any day like they did in 2021.

I think India is still a good side to beat Pakistan this time as well.

Dude lol

Pakistan is a dud T20 team. A literal joke. They may still win and upsets are not unknown in cricket after all. But India, even with duds like Kohli and Rohit in it, would walk all over them. Eyes closed.

Naw it was a great knock but Kohli in T20 2016 against Aus was much more controlled.
I think even kohlis knock against SA in 2014 sf was a very good one.its like a computer algorithm working on a mathematical equation than a sport.Even a website mentioned that like robot kind of calculation.

PPers of USA!

I have a mission for you. Should you choose to accept it, is, order a big celebration style cake for Pakistan team to their hotel, on each match day they are in states.

Come on, it will be funny.

🍰 :bobs

It will be a one sided contest....
The minnow team have no guts to beat Sharma's team
Lol Pakistan is favorite to win this match as India have so many passengers in this team.

T20 cricket is Pakistan best formats if this is Another ODI then india would have upper hand but in T20 cricket Pakistan started as favourite now .
Pakistan pace attack is more lethal when compared to india . we have only one pacers that is bumrah.

Virat kohli vs Mohammad Amir the legendary battle is waiting for one last time .

Innings - 5
Runs - 308
Average - 308.0
SR - 132.75
Fifties - 4
Sixes - 9

Virat Kohli enjoys batting against Pakistan in the men's T20 World Cup.

Can he do it again for india as most likely this will be his last Wt20 game against Pakistan.

If we look at H2H for T20 Internationals between the 2 countries... India has won 9 as compared to 3 won by Pakistan.
So statistically speaking India has a higher chance of win in in NY .
Rohit Sharma is the only player who has probably played in all of these matches since 2007.

Seriously....
Are you kidding me 😉
Their maximum score in T20s is 140- 160..... which our batsman are able to score in 10 overs.
Tell me their single bowler who is better than our bowlers

After watching recent performences of Pakistan everyone knows that who will emerge as a winner lol

Thought Pakistan had the edge with bowling this time. But only Shaheen is swinging the ball and only Imad looks like he's bowling at his best.

Should be very disappointing if we don't bury this talentless PAK team by a significant margin.

Rohit, Jadeja and Kohli should announce retirement immediately if they lose to this side of all sides.

After yesterday’s performance I’m in no mood for any more Pakistan games, I hope they get beat hard!!

That was disgraceful!

But what I don’t understand is - I’ve seen videos of Pakistani fans asking for autographs and selfies outside the hotel after the game as if they won the game….

Many of our fans need a health check especially what may or may not lie between their ears!

In T20 cricket past results doesn't matter much .on the given day any team can win the match as one or Two over can change the whole game in shortest format of the cricket .

So, India practices in New York, plays warm-up matches in New York, faces Ireland in New York, and then plays against Pakistan on June 9th in New York.

pakistan plays USA in dallas and then india in new york.

These are excuses in waiting, brother. Pakistan practised cricket in the UAE for 8 years before the 2018 Asia Cup and we never complained

Virat Kohli enjoys batting against Pakistan in the men's T20 World Cup.

Can he do it again for india as most likely this will be his last Wt20 game against Pakistan.

Honestly hope its his last t20wc against pak. Dont want him to milk any performance and stay in the team for the next 4yrs on " experience " quota. This is pretty much a meaningless game of both ond and pak qualify and ind gets smashed in the KO games. So much young exciting fearless talent in ind for t20 and we are stuck with these washed up seniors tuk tuk players

Also all these excuses from any team is pure nonsense. If you play well and aggressively you win. Toss pitch previous gwmes knowledge weather dew etc etc is all a bunch of execuses for losers. Aus in odi 2023 and eng in t20 2022 showed if you play well and dont succumb to pressure- you win period. All the other side factors are just distractions and sorry lame execuses.

And yet there is nonstop chatter about how aus beat in in 2023 final inspite of the stacks being against them. Games are played on the field on the pitch and the better team wins. All these excuses from both ind and pak fans are just that excuses. You play better you win simple as that. None of ind or pak deserve to be in the SFs.
