[VIDEOS] "Maybe those difficult moments, will make me stronger in future" : Naseem Shah

EXTREMELY POOR captaincy by Baber in the final

You saw how Adil Rasheed bowled and you saw how bad was Naseem’s first over.

Simply connect the two dots and bring on Shadab to replace Naseem IN THE POWER PLAY.

But he went for Naseem again and gave away another 20 odd runs.
You watched the highlights of witch match?
In his second over, that was the 5th over the match, he gave 11 runs and not another 20.
This is the over in witch he beat Buttler on 5 occasions. There Was that one wide four and one ramp shot for six. But there were 5 brilliant bowls.

Now connect your two dots and start watching the match more carefully next time.

You could see from the look on the England batters faces that they were impressed with and respected Naseem Shah today.

That is something he can be very proud of.

On a better and luckier day he could have had 2 or 3 wickets.

Apologies, I was typing thru a cell phone and fat fingered where I wanted to type 10 odd runs instead of 20. And 10 runs is A LOT when u r defending such a small total.

But the point is the same; with a such a bad first over, you needed to give the bowler a break to regroup, and you already saw how Rasheed bowled - it was a straight forward decision before the second innings even began to give AT LEAST ONE powerplay over to Shadab. It was a great time to keep Naseem back and try Shadab for one over. You already how Livingstone was removed after his first bad over?

Again, this is my opinion and you don't have to agree with it.

Naseem in his first two overs - 25 runs

Naseem in his last two overs - 5 runs

He has great potential and he was incredibly unlucky not to pick up a wicket.

He second over was pretty good too. The wide wasn’t great but Riz should have done better. Buttler’s scoop was outrageous - gotta just give the batsman credit but 5 balls in that over were unplayable.

Naseem only picked up 2 wickets in the WC where he was playing in Australia.

A bowler of this caliber should be expected to do a better job.

The second spell today was spine tingling.

The young man can hold his held high. He bowled fantastically with no scoreboard pressure.

Best bowling from both sides. Outstanding spell of pace and swing. He could have tried to bowl a little full. May be it is the height. He was hitting just short of a length. So it never looked like catching the edge as ball had to travel too much after pitching. Neverthless great spell.

I’ve rarely seen such excellent bowling from 3 overs that didn’t get a wicket, you could see from Stokes face he was wondering how he was still at the crease, so unlucky!

Extremely impressive young fast bower , keep getting better. He was unlucky today , went for some runs in his first spell in final while trying to pitch up and looking for wickets . Read the situation well and changed his length and his 2nd spell was breathtaking .

He is very skillful at such a young age, intelligent, a quick learner, and mentally strong , performed well in very high profile matches, wonderful death bowler with best slow bouncer.

All this talk of how unlucky Naseem was, blah blah. At the end of the day what matters is statistics i.e. he only got 2 wickets in the entire T-20 WC and he didn't do a job in supporting Shaheen and Rauf. He is in the side to take wickets with the new ball. He has become a defensive bowler where most of the times he is just looking not to concede runs with his back of the hand slower deliveries, bouncers. Someone in the team management needs to give him some tough love.

I remember Wahab bowled a rapid 92-95 mph spell to England in a test match in 2015 in UAE for a good 10-12 overs and all the experts, commentators were going gaga over his efforts and he came back into the dressing room expecting his coach Waqar Younis to tell him what he wanted to hear but Waqar gave him tough love i.e. "your efforts count for nothing if you didn't pick up wickets".

He was great in Asia Cup, and last couple of series. It was his first world cup I'm sure he will learn from this. But we should try hasnain over waseem

I hear you and I’d be inclined to agree with you regarding some of the middle games where he was a bit overzealous with the slower balls / bouncers etc. he very much bowled in a containing capacity.

My point at that time was - you are a fast bowler, unless someone is really going after you, there’s no need to bowl a bulk of slower balls. He bowled a very good over to SA at the end which was lauded by the commies, but I still felt he overbowled the slower ball there

In the final he went searching for wickets in his first over, but he forgot he was playing at the MCG and got punished by some premier attacking batsmen. However, his last 3 overs he showed me that he was capable of sustained hostility bowling attacking lines (yes he got scooped for 6 but I give Buttler’s audaciousness credit there. I don’t think in those 3 overs he was trying to bowl defensively. He was looking for wickets and I don’t think there’s any more he could have done there.

There’s no doubt he’s a fantastic bowler but you are right he has to soon start taking wickets too.

Adil rashid took 4.wickets in entire world cup and imo he was best spinner on show. In t 20 you have just 24 balls to take wickets and sometime when luck is not with you your stats will not show.

Naseem was the pacer of the final on a more lucky day he ends with 4 - 20 sometimes game is about fine margins.

Naseem has surprised me with his growth, I hope Pakistan wrap him in cotton wool. Someone mentioned his action is not friendly for a high load? if the case, this should be done anyway but Pakistan need to treat him with extra care.

His spell was a joy to watch and that action is beautiful.

He should have got more wickets but he did the supporting role by not conceding many runs.In the Final he could have got 2-3 if it was his day.

His first two overs were too short. His second spell was a delight to watch.I think Rauf’s advice did the trick.

I hope Waqar also told him how to convert that effort into wickets... length? particular ball? etc

You cannot be unlucky consistently.

Naseem is an impotent bowler. He is good for the cameras only.

Taking wickets has been a struggle for him throughout his mediocre international career.

His fans can celebrate him beating the edge, but that does not win you games.

He has come on leaps and bounds but his poor 1st over was very costly in the bigger picture. He was too full when he needed to hit the hard length

Reminds of the time we were all doing bhangra over Wahab Riaz spell against Watson.

Except this time Naseem didn’t even offer a dropped dolly chance a la the Rahat.

There are some batsman who look really pleasing to the eye, will play stylish shots, will have the demeanor of a proper batsman. Basically, they will look the part. However, they do not have the knack for scoring runs.

From Pakistan, you can think of the likes of Umar Amin and Asad Shafiq to an extent. They kept finding ways of getting out.

Naseem is basically the bowling version of those players. He keeps finding ways of not taking wickets.

If you look the part but lack the knack, your fans will keep hoping that you will learn with experience but usually it does not happen. If you lack the knack it is an issue that tends to haunt you throughout your career.

Compare Naseem to Shaheen - when the latter emerged in 2018-19, he was very raw but you could tell that he has a knack of taking wickets. All great fast bowlers do and they show it early. Naseem doesn’t.

Naseem has been picking steady stream of wickets for last six months in all 3 formats but more importantly you can see he is bowling well rewards will come eventually.

He was not picking wickets in Eng - Nzl series but that was because he was bowling horribly after adjustment in his action.
Its a credit to his mental strength that he has come back strongly after Waqar almost destoryed him, right now he is similar to a batsman who is making pretty 50's eventually a 100 (5 Fer) will come that will take him to next level inshallah.

Naseem and Abdullah has the highest ceiling among all our players including Shaheen and Babar.

Where has his pace gone? I know he can get it to 90+mph on the odd effort ball, but he was cranking it up to 97mph in Australia on his debut. What's happened, injuries, or something else?

I think he looks a better bowler now because he isn't trying to bowl 97mph.

He bowled well in the series at Aus at home but it is high time that he actually starts taking some wickets now. He’s been on the test scene for almost 3 years now and has had experience in a variety of conditions. No more excuses anymore.

IMO, he doesn’t have the wicket taking ability to become a quality Test/ODI bowler but I hope I’m wrong.

Absolutely agree with you, I just wasn't sure if it was due to injury or if he sacrifice it for the extra control. Happy to hear that it's the latter rather than the former

Hes bowled well in last 2 test series picking 13 wickets in 4 tests @ 28 is decent returns. The home tests vs NZ and England will tell us more about him as he is leading an attack for the first time. Conditions should be ok as its December and Jan. No excuses for him if he does not perform.

When England pace bowler James Anderson made his entry into Test cricket in 2003, Pakistan’s Naseem Shah was barely three months old.

On Thursday, they will be spearheading their respective team’s pace attacks in Rawalpindi with England playing their first Test on Pakistan soil for 17 years.

The precocious Naseem, 19, showered praise Tuesday on Anderson, saying he hopes to learn from the 40-year-old veteran.

“He is a legend,” said Naseem after training at Rawalpindi Stadium. “I have learned from him and will (continue to) learn from him.”

Naseem has made rapid progress since his Test debut in Australia in 2019. That year he also became the youngest fast bowler to take five wickets in a Test -- against Sri Lanka in Karachi at the age of just 16 years and 307 days.

Two months later, he became the youngest to a Test hat trick, against Bangladesh in Rawalpindi.

Despite his own record, Naseem is full of admiration for Anderson, whose 667 Test wickets are eclipsed only by Sri Lankan Muttiah Muralitharan (800) and Australian Shane Warne (708).

‘Knows everything‘

“I think it is a big achievement for him that he is still playing and is very fit... that shows how much hard work he has been doing,” he said.

“He knows everything about bowling, having played everywhere in the world, so he is one of the best.”

Naseem relishes the challenge of leading Pakistan’s pace attack in the absence of his illustrious new ball partner Shaheen Shah Afridi, who will miss the series with a knee injury.

“Shaheen was also injured in Sri Lanka (in July) so even then I took responsibility and I am again ready for that,” said Naseem. “When your best bowler gets injured it makes a big difference, so we have to take that responsibility, use the new ball well.”

Besides Naseem, Pakistan has three uncapped pace bowlers in Haris Rauf, Mohammad Wasim Junior and Mohammad Ali.

The reporter further asks Naseem about his opinion on the ‘pace vs skills’ debate, insisting that while James Anderson doesn't possess the same speed as before, he has still got the skills. The Pakistan youngster, however, cut the question short and made a rather hilarious remark about his English language comprehension.

“Brother, I have just 30 percent English. My English is finished now, okay?” Naseem said, leading to laughter across the room.

As the reporter, then, refined his question, Naseem insisted that a massive amount of experience has helped Anderson in understanding the game better. “I told you, he's the legend. He knows everything. He knows how to take wickets because he has played cricket everywhere in the world. That's why he's one of the best bowlers in the world,” said Naseem.

^lovely interview. Can’t fault the lad on attitude and communication.

People criticizing this lad for failing to ‘lead’ a Test bowling attack at the age of 19, need to go out more and get something meaningful going in their lives.

The guy needs to turn around quick or hes heading Mohd Sami direction in terms of numbers

He is the only bowler on either side who has looked like taking a wicket. Glad he got 3 cheap ones in the end. Deserves a lil luck.

Turn around on what wickets? The world's best can't do anything here. Cummins got one wicket at Pindi across two innings, Starc and Hazelwood had none.

He did great in Lahore, when he had some reverse atleast, to work with. You can't expect a upcoming 19 year old to put up performances on a motorway, not when even the best of fast bowlers, at the top of their game are hopeless.

It also doesn't help when your captain is tactically clueless.

Speaking in presser:

"Obviously, Shaheen has given great performances. Challenges are fun in life. I enjoy challenges," .

"I enjoy my cricket and bowling. I motivate myself to bowl according to the requirements of the team and I try my best and the rest, God takes care of"

"It's not an easy situation but as a professional cricketer, you don't have anything else except cricket. Sometimes mornings are hard, but the only thing in our hands is to try and do our best irrespective of the condition of the pitch. It took some time to get used to it but I finally felt better today,"

A poor poor shot from naseem There was only a couple of overs left of the days play and he plays that shot with a man out

Hope he gets severley admonished for that Its shots like that which are the difference between draws and losses in cricket

Missed a great chance to bat long and properly. If PK have 3 number 11s, then it's always going to be 7 out, all out. He has some hitting power but has to develop a couple of scoring areas to get his average to 15 over the long term

Going at 5 an over again :)))

There are three certainties in life: death, taxes & Naseem making Test cricket look like ODI cricket.

4-184 in this match so far, his overall econ rate slightly above 6.

A mixed performance.

He doesn’t have the tactical nous to get wickets in Test cricket, and here he is being asked to lead the bowling attack.

Needs to figure out a safe length to bowl on these wickets.

Mohammad Rizwan after his clean bowled dismissal by James Anderson:

“I met Naseem Shah afterwards, I told him the way he bowled to me, you do the same in England"

Naseem Shah out of Karachi Test - A niggle in the bowling shoulder has ruled out Naseem Shah from the third and final Test between Pakistan and England at Karachi.

==

Seems injuries wont let him be. I blame the thankless pitches in Pakistan which have done this to our bowlers.

I respect any bowler who fulfilled his overs quota on that Rawalpindi pitch. It isnt talked about enough how much these guys put their fragile bodies on the line every day in international cricket.

His entire Test career has been a difficult moment. His numbers are absolutely embarrassing & he is always on the brink of getting injured.

He is lucky to not play against England in Multan & Karachi because that already woeful average & SR was only going to get worse. One of the worst Test bowlers I have ever seen.

This should be his last Test match until he puts in the hard yards in FC & proves himself.

The way he bowled to steve smith on those lifeless pitches, i thought his test career would take off but another injury setback for him.

Naseem Shah in an interview with Sky Sports

“I was too attached with my mom. When I was 12, I left home because of cricket. I shifted to Lahore. When my debut came, she called me a day before and I told her, 'tomorrow is my debut'. She didn't use to watch TV, she didn't understand cricket. But I told her, 'you must watch the game tomorrow because I'm playing, I'll be live on TV'.

"She was so happy, she said she would come to Lahore to watch the game. When I woke up, the management came to me and said, 'you mom has passed away'

“For the next six-to-eight months, I struggled so much. No one thinks about what's going inside you. I used to have a lot of medicines, I saw my mom everywhere. I used to think about her a lot. Whenever you play for Pakistan, everyone expects performances from you. I had a lot of injuries during that time as well, so it was a tough time. I learned from it, though. I'm stronger now. My (Pakistan) debut was the toughest day of my life. I can manage when I'm not performing well now, because I know how tough it was"

PCB National High Performance Center , Lahore

Twenty twenty junior girls from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Lahore participated in this junior girls camp. The first phase of this camp was held in Lahore last week. Earlier, junior girls cricket camp has been organized in 2017 and 2019. Mr.Javed Afridi, Chairman Peshawar Zalmi & Zalmi Foundation, quoted "Zalmi Foundation is trying to promote women in sports and empower them to achieve great heights. In collaboration with PCB and US Consulate General, Lahore, young girl cricketers were given the opportunity to get training from PCB coaches at the National High Performance Center. Mr. Javed Afridi expressed his delight and thanked National Cricket Stars Shaheen Shah Afridi, Naseem Shah and Abid Ali who were part of the coaching camps and encouraged the young cricketers.

Being smashed around but then what is this pitch about?

Being smashed around but then what is this pitch about?

Getting smashed around is normal business for Test cricket’s worst fast bowler. This is a very good surface but you have to be a good bowler to begin with.

One can accept a high average if the pitch is a road. However, there is no excuse for the fact that he regularly goes at over 4 runs an over. That completely exposes his credentials as a bowler.

Gets the breakthrough

<iframe src="https://streamable.com/e/4tgj6d" width="560" height="315" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

He has come back brilliantly since the first session. On a flat pitch he has bent his back and gotten arguably two of the biggest New Zealand wickets. The over that he bowled leading up to that Williamson wicket was simply a thing of beauty. Classic test match bowling.

He has now gotten Smith, Root and Williamson out twice.

And Mamoon still has the gall to continue blabbering on. Even though he has been made to look like a fool 8/10 times when Naseem has come on to bowl this year.

Cramping up once again.

As Simon Doull said - something not right that someone so young keeps getting cramps. He's suggesting it could be something to do with his diet.

Best all format young pacer in the world atm.
Nobody has as complete a skillset atm. Unwarranted criticism.
One of the first names on the team sheet.

Wouldve thought its more to do with lack of fitness than a poor diet...

Needs to up his cardio, and strengthen his back, core etc to be able to bowl test match spells.

That would be Shaheen sir... its easy to forget how young he is because of how accomplished he already is!

Naseem has done well on the garveyard pitches of Pakistan, he is so young, and has not been playing consistently due to his injuries.

This is on management if true, the players need to be guided on this issue, especially in Pakistan where diet isn't an overly major concern it appears from our sports people.

Diet would be hardly the issue with Naseem, most Pakistanis have poor diet but they do not break down as much as Naseem does.

its not rocket science, he needs a season of low intensity long form domestic first class to work out how to manage his body away from the pressures of test cricket. no one else can teach you how your body works.

Diet would be hardly the issue with Naseem, most Pakistanis have poor diet but they do not break down as much as Naseem does.

Diet would mean taking enough water and electrolytes as well. He is around 22 23 , so he should not get cramped so often.

Naseems career could go either way. On these wickets he will mostly struggle because he lacks the height to create the bounce which pushes good batsman back. His bouncer is generally ineffective and maybe he needs to look at bowling bouncers that cut back at the batsman but that takes time to develop in the nets. However, he will strat to become more effective abroad as most of the overseas arent as dead as ours and with his pace around 87mph, he will be more effective. A lot will depend in his fitness and that is one variable no one can predict

Devon Conway on Naseem's bowling on Day 1 of the 2nd Test

"I think that spell was special from Naseem Shah after tea. He bowled with good energy and in a good area. He asked good questions and obviously moved the ball both ways, which made it quite challenging for myself and Kane. He reaped the rewards towards the end when he got Kane out. It was a challenging spell,"

So a sharp ~ 140-145k) bowler who swings the bowl both ways. And some say he is talentless!

When I watch him bowl whilst enjoying it I do worry about his fitness and whether he will be injured.

He's young, he's still learning the game, but he seems very fragile.

He is not blessed with an ideal fast bowling physique. He a bit short and stubby and will really need to work on his fitness. It's all in the hands of the coaching staff on how they handle his workload.

Btw, in my opinion he needs to make his runup more economical, a gradual buildup to the bowling crease. With a smooth runup he will be able to preserve more energy, make his bowling action more relaxed and that will give him more control.

I have seen many young fast bowlers in my cub having this problem and they outgrew these issues . I'm talking about FC level bowlers, not just club level bowlers.

Naseem is still young and he will overcome these issues.

He remains the 2nd best fastman in Pakistan after Afridi.

Quite literally top of off

The most important thing is that the PCB manage his workload very carefully.

They have a habit of making a mess of workloads of fast-bowlers and it's vital that they take care of Naseem.

It's alarming that they are picking him in all 3 formats already at this stage of his career.

Clearly talented. Bowls some great nuts.

Just needs his workload to be managed otherwise he will be hampered by constant injuries.
