I disagree slightly with the GOAT tag. Different players perform different roles.
Kohli is an accumulator not an impact player. He turns over the strike and builds a platform to allow the guy at the other end to play with freedom. I'm sure there are exceptions through his career, but for the most part that's been his role.
From that perspective he's undoubtedly the GOAT. Nobody has been better at that role, and it's allowed him to build monster stats.
Impact players will take the game away from you. You always hear the Aussies talking about this, and they prioritise impact over consistency if it comes down to it. Matthew Hayden went into this when naming his team of the world cup.
At some stage in this world cup all their impact players came through when needed, even though they lacked consistency through the tournament. We've seen plenty impact players over the years, but their problem has always been consistency.
Now if you can find a guy who can turn the strike as well change gears into beast mode, that would be the real MVP of batting. And it's why Viv Richards is still spoken of so highly after 4 decades.
India lost today not because of Kohli. He was doing his job. But the guy who was supposed to play with freedom at the other end went missing and killed any momentum in the innings. Which put pressure on Kohli to start playing the sort of innings he's not used to. And he eventually fell trying.
