Without doubt Virendra Sehwag was an ornament to the game of cricket giving the art of batting a new dimension. It was Viru who virtually invented a new era in terms of batting strike rate taking batting domination to region sun explored. No batsmen ever scored triple centuries at such a strike rate or double hundreds and centuries. At his best Sehwag launched a blitzkreig creating shots from his very own book.He may not have been elegant or posessed sound footwork but his razor sharp reflexes and hand eye coordination virtually compensated for that. Tendulkar could never match the explosiveness of Sehwag or his penchant for registering big scores .Sehwag at hsi best could have been even more of a match-winner than Sachin like when scoring 83 in a run chase versus England in 2007-08 as well as 309 v Pakistan ,319 v South Africa , 201v Pakistan and 293 v Sri Lanka.at home .Ofcourse Sachin was technically far superior and more consistent and a better player of the moving and turning ball and abetter batsmen on bad or fast tracks.Perhaps it was touch and go with Tendulkar bating at his best and Sehwag as great bowlers feared Sehwag more than Sachin.Amazingly Sehwag averaged over 46 in Australia on fast tracks but had a comparitively low test average in England and South Africa.Still his best scores overseas indicate he may not have been a flat track bully. In many ways he wa slike a Viv Richards of his day but not in Viv's class against the moving ball or in seaming conditions, nor against lethal pace.
To me Sehwag's greatest rival for supremacy was VV.S Laxman, another batting Connoiseur and unlike Sehwag posessed majestic grace and wrist twork.Few batsmen ever could guide the ball where they wished as effortlessly as V.V.S.His strokes reesmbled a painter making curves on a board revealing unbelievable innovation and artistry.Like Sehwag he even overshadowed Sachin at his best like when scoring 281 v Australia at Kolkat a in 2001 ressurecting India from the grave as well as 3 heroic knocks in match -winning run chases where he single-handedly won India matches .In a 4th innings Laxman performed better than nay batsmen of his generation. In 200304 combing tests and ODI's V.V.S.was India's best batsmen.Facing the best attacks VVS.has a better record than Sehwag.
For sheer talent hard to seperate Tendulkar,Sehwag and Laxman and for pure class maybe a whisker does not seperate Sehwag and V,V.S.However being more impactful overall Sehwag would win my vote over Laxman as a batsmen even if they wee equally talented. For pure natural ability it may virtually be a draw between the 3.
