What's new

West Indies [289 & 415/6d] beat England [77 & 246] by 381 runs in the first Test, lead series 1-0

Wow...these england players need to learn how to play short pitch bowling

Normally, grass covered wicket with a little moisture always quickens on day two. Once the sun takes out the moisture from top surface, it gets compact and if the base is solid (Barbados is), it bounces & carries better. Not the worst for batting, if batsman is good on back-foot, but genuine quicks will fly on Day 2 more than Day 1. These type of wickets actually takes toss out of equation - a little more moisture, and we were blown away for 43; but that doesn't mean it's always a bowl first wicket; batsmen need to plan innings by session and negotiate tough hours.

good points made. Thanks

MMHS WI have all the ingredients to be a good test team.just need a good spinner and with more experience i am sure their bats will come good.

They need batsman for top order. We have come to a cricket world where Boards have to pay out specialist Test batsmen - at least 2 openers and one middle order shouldn't be allowed to play T20s and be compensated for that. No matter how good your middle order or bowling is, a start like 22/2 regularly will never going to make a good Test side.

England lacks "pace bowlers". All medium pacers. This is going to be hard work for them if Anderson or Ali don't do something.

When Jennings got out I was thinking how pathetic performer he is

But he ended up as England's top scorer at the end of the innings :vk2

cant figure out why they are playing with 9 batsmen and not broad

"Depth" lol Since they won a few tests with their depth they have taken this concept too seriously. They are sacrificing specialists for bits and pieces players. Eventually it will come back to bite them.

Moen back to form, he needs another Indian tour to England to be back in form.

The decision already has cost them. Must be hard for someone with 400+ wickets to sit out and see 2 part-time spinners play ahead of him in seam-friendly conditions. Dont know how the best in the game, ppl like joe root make such blunders

England are such an overrated cricketing team and I mean that in every format. Fold under pressure all the time. Their away Test form has been dreadful lately.

Credit to the WI though, since 2015 theyve really turned their fortunes around in Test cricket IMO and they deserve credit for that

Both of these 2 have already scored more runs than Jennings (top scorer of England)

England made blunder by picking rashid instead of broad. There is no need of second spinner here. This inning reminds me of terrible "45 all out " against jaromy Taylor.

Eng all out for 70 runs and then bowling part timers within 10-12 overs. What a sight!

Campbell looking solid , seems to be a good prospect for WI. He looks better than his 30 first class average

Bilal7 actually said England are the best test team in the world. topspin Hitman:)))

He'll follow this up with Pakistan being the second best test side because they drew against no.1 team twice in the last couple of years, :rp

I think WI can bring that hatmeyer guy and finish this match WI in one session.
400+ to chase is enough for any team to disintegrate.

Lol, they’re the deserving number 1 odi team atm

Three-nil in SL. But most sides lose away from home now.

I don’t think they are overrated, I have been saying for a couple of years that this is their weakest batting in their history. There are no quick bowlers and no spinners of note either. T20 has ruined the County game. There are plenty of guys who can hit massive sixes and but the rounded batting skills are not taught any more.

WI is choking here a bit. They simply need to add few runs to take the game away from Eng.

Imagine this forum was called engpassion!!
Lol
"We need to reform our domestic system"

Actually England do need to. County season starts too early in April where seamers can run riot. Not much incentive for genuine quicks.

WI are trying their best to give it away, but they already have enough runs. I don't see England chasing 300.

England deserve this for not picking specialist bowlers. Broad would have done better than Curran and I think Leech would have done better than Moen and Rashid as he would have at least been able to keep it tight. Specialists doing the job for WI. Bowlers have bowled well , Hetmyer and Hope scored.

West Indies well ahead here.

You should just stick to taking digs at posters on here. Moeen is undoubtedly better than any specialist spinner England have.

WI needs atleast 350 to have a go at England in the 2nd innings just in case. Another 80 odd runs needed. Hetmyer has to wind up.

Just stretch the lead to 350.

WI will need one of Jason Holder's lower order rearguards.

Wisden Trophy Zindabad.

ENG-WI series are so underrated for its entertainment.

This reminds me of that crazy Lord's Test in 2000 where WI got a good 1st inns lead before imploding in the 3rd inns.

The weakest Sri Lankan side in twenty years in fairness.

On this deck I think WI could declare now and win.

Great to see Stokes so fired up. If only Broad and Wood were flying in too....

Leech has performed in county cricket and did well in Sri Lanka. What has he done to deserve to be dropped?

And if Moen Ali is the best spinner in England they won't be winning in India anytime soon.

Performances on the spin-orientated pitches at Taunton and in Sri Lanka aren't enough to get in the side as first choice spinner.

Moen Ali flopped in India on favourable pitches. Also flopped in NZ and Australia.

Also where was he in the first innings?

He can play in England but outside of England he shouldn't be the lead spinner. Leech and Moen would been fine with me as well tbf. But let's not make out as though Moen is ATG spinner.

Players who can't play short ball
Too many all rounders - not enough specialists
Best players on the bench not selected
Openers techniques not good enough
Captaiin shying away from batting ( root at 3)
Etc etc
Would be pandamonium and meltdown

WI have more than enough runs here only question is margin of victory from here.

Vijay shankar will be proud of his bowling seeing Curran lol Almost all his balls get to keeper on second bounce

Root covering his mouth saying something to Rashid.. Wonder what it would be. "Don't bowl half trackers" ?

In this case should have. That was a fluke wicket. Batsman lost his balance. Basically this guy is a trash selection for this match.

He has powder-puff bowling on unresponsive pitches; typical English seamer.

He is still too raw to be played as an all-rounder and England should have played Woakes.

The man is the best new-ball bowler in the world along with Anderson.

England picked the wrong side and the West Indies have comprehensively outplayed them.

West Indies will win the match, but it looks like an open series which will conclude 2-1 either way.

West Indies will win from here. Seems to be doing something for the spinners but West Indies not selecting 1 shouldn't hurt them.

339/6 which is a very good score another 60 odd runs and England is done and dusted

Problem is England apart from Jimmy or say broad doesn't have bowler to be competitive in these conditions, yes they have luxury of all rounders buts you need specialist to do job in tests, Moeen, Rashid or even curren are condition dependent bowler or bat, they are just overdoing this all rounder thing

The problem is that the available specialist bowlers are not better at bowling than the allrounders.

Big problems for England with the Ashes just three tests away and the batting still hopless. But there isn't anyone to pick who is better. The County system produces good LO players but not test players any more.

Once ANderson retires it is going to be tough for England even to win in England.

England messed their selection up big time. They need to drop one of Bairstow, Buttler or Foakes, in my opinion and play a specialist batsman. Also, Curran is clearly not ready to take over from Broad and although it is easy to say in hindsight, two spinners on this pitch seems unnecessary.

All is not lost, they can win the second game.

The bowlers have been fine here. Apart from Curran and Rashid, who can be easily benched for the next game in favor of Broad and Woakes (if the pitch is similar to this one), the others have been very good. It is the batting that needs more specialists. Surely there are better test batsmen in England than Buttler and/or Foakes? Move Bairstow back down to six and give him the gloves. He was doing a great job as a keeper-batsman.

Roach stars as Windies bowl England out for 77

18 wickets fell on a staggering second day of the first Test between the Windies and England, but it is the home side who are firmly on top in Bridgetown.

A stunning display of fast bowling from the home side’s quicks left England shell-shocked, collapsing from 30/1 at lunch to 77 all out – their fourth-lowest Test total against the Windies.

The day began with the Windies on 264/8, looking to recover from the new-ball damage wrecked by James Anderson the previous evening. Some stern defensive resistance from Alzarri Joseph allowed for Shimron Hetmyer (81) to add some runs, taking the Windies total to 289. Anderson finished the innings with a five-wicket haul to his name, his 27th in Test match cricket.

The England pair of Rory Burns and Keaton Jennings enjoyed a watchful start until Jennings (17) departed before lunch, an unconvincing drive at Holder seeing the ball travel safely into the hands of Shai Hope at gully.

It was a disappointing blow for the visitors but it is unlikely they envisaged what was to unfurl over the course of the second session. Kemar Roach was the deadliest bowler on show after the break, with Rory Burns (2) dragging the ball onto his stumps, before Bairstow (12) fell victim to the seamer, the ball flicking off his elbow and rattling the timbers.

Joe Root (4) timed a lovely cover drive but that was the only damage he caused with the bat, Holder catching him plumb on his crease with one that nipped back into the right-hander. Ben Stokes’ (0) pads were rapped by another Roach thunderbolt and although the England all rounder went for a review, the ball was shown to be clipping the bails.

Moeen Ali (0) followed the next ball, a swish across the line seeing a top-edge fly to Joseph at fine-leg. While Roach missed out on a hat-trick, Jos Buttler (4) proved unable to handle some more short-ball venom from the live-wire paceman. Sam Curran (14) and Adil Rashid (12) offered some eye-catching boundaries, but England crumbled to gift the Windies a 212-run lead, Roach finishing with figures of 5/17, his ninth Test five-for.

The Windies openers impressed, putting on a 52-run partnership before the home side displayed their own potential for a collapse. Moeen and Stokes combined from each end to have the Windies fall from 52/0 to 61/5, the off-spinner finding turn and bounce while the fast bowler looked to build on his four-wicket haul in the first innings.

Any hopeful thoughts of an English comeback were put to bed by the striking power of Hetmyer, batting for the second time in the day. The left-hander was at his counter-attacking best, ably supported by Shane Dowrich (27*). The introduction of Adil Rashid into the bowling attack was music to the ears of Hetmyer, who swept the leg-spinners third ball for six over midwicket, before finishing the over with a smashing hit through cover for four.

Although Hetmyer (31) departed to the bowling of Curran as the end of the day approached, the Windies will be overjoyed by the state of the game, currently holding a lead of 339 runs.

Man,Hetmyer is so good.

Windies have a very talented team.

Hetmyer, Hope, Bravo, Braithwaite, Chase are all good batsmen. Joseph, Roach and Gabriel in the bowling as well

And the captain himself, Holder.

All very talented. They just need to be consistent.

nope it's not fine, you need 1 or may be 2 all-rounder in ur team not 4 all English bowlers are pretty similar pace wise, there is no X Factor no quick bowler in their setup, curran is promising but his pace means he is a certain condition bowler plus the way he got out today showed he is susceptible against bounce just like broad, and he will be targeted there, plus are moeen and Rashid really ur best spinners, if so u need to look at other options as well

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados – West Indies fast bowler Kemar Roach spoke to members of the media following the second day of the first Test of the Wisden Trophy Series at Kensington Oval on Thursday.

The 30-year-old had the remarkable figures of 11-7-17-5 – his ninth five-for in Test cricket – as the home side bowled out the England for 77 in the first innings. This gave the Windies a lead of 212 and they reached 127-6 in the second innings, as 18 wickets fell on the day. The overall lead is 339, going into Day 3 on Friday.

Roach continued his excellent track record on home soil – he now has 29 wickets in his fifth Test at the historic venue – and today’s effort bettered his previous best figures of 4-55 against New Zealand in 2014. It was England’s fourth-lowest total against West Indies and the lowest by any team at the ground.

“The ball was coming out really well today and my rhythm was good. I felt really good and enjoyed my bowling. We had specific plans… we were very disciplined and we hit the nail on the head. I was happy for the support of the others and we bowled well as a team today. I have been putting in a lot of work in the nets and today I got some rewards,” Roach said.

“It’s always special for me playing here at home, with the family and friends cheering me on. To be able to get my first five-for at home against England, one of the top teams in the world … they’re a great side … is a great feeling. The atmosphere was great, it’s always enjoyable to perform in front a big crowd.”

Roach, who is making his 51st Test appearance, was well supported by captain Jason Holder (2-15), Alzarri Joseph (2-20) and Shannon Gabriel (1-15), all as they all created wicket-taking chances.

In West Indies second innings, debutant John Campbell again played with freedom to make 33 and was well supported by Kraigg Brathwaite, who batted patiently for 24 in an opening partnership of 53. It was their second half-century stand in the match.

Windies slipped to 61-5, but Shane Dowrich (27 not out) and Shimron Hetmyer (31) steadied the innings. They added 59 for the sixth wicket with a number of bold shots and counted four fours and three sixes in the partnership.

The left-handed Hetmyer again showcased his wide range of strokes and counted two boundaries and two sixes. This followed up his valuable 81 in the first innings – which came off 109 balls and included nine boundaries and two sixes.

Scores: WEST INDIES 289 (Shimron Hetmyer 81, Shai Hope 57, Roston Chase 54; James Anderson 5-46, Ben Stokes 4-59) and 127-6 (John Campbell 33, Shimron Hetmyer 31, Shane Dowrich 27 not out; Moeen Ali 3-41) ENGLAND 77 (Kemar Roach 5-17, Jason Holder 2-15, Alzarri Joseph 2-20)

MMHS people were making fun of BD including BD fans when we got destroyed for 50 runs in WI.

At least we didnt get blown away in our home conditions.

So u suggesting Bdesh better than england or what? More u bring Bdesh in a game between England and WI, more ordinary Bdesh appears. It's one thing to win matches on rank turners made for unexciting and ordinary spinners, it's a different thing when your fast bowlers outperform opposition's fast bowlers on a lively track. WI anyday is better than Bdesh in any part of the world, baring Bdesh.

Hard to argue on that, WI talent can't be doubted. Often, they aren't able to play together as a cohesive team but individually many of them are just so exciting players.

Not sure why you would say that. Atleast 5 players in top 7 will find a place in most teams in the world atm - Root, Bairstow, Stokes, Butler and even Foakes - are better than most of their contemparies in other countries. Foakes though new, was the standout player in his first series against Lanka.

Bairstow averaged 25 last year.

Foakes is a better keeper than Bairstow, who was moved up to try to improve the top order. The trouble is that he has the highest percentage of being bowled of any test player I ever saw.

Buttler had a good summer with the bat.

The problem is the top three - there are no test class openers in England. It is continually getting shot away putting too much pressure on Root.

England were "embarrassing" in being bowled out for 77 on day two of the first Test against West Indies, says former batsman Geoffrey Boycott.

The tourists collapsed to the lowest total in Tests at the Kensington Oval in Barbados, with only four players making double figures.

"It wasn't only disappointing; it was embarrassing," Boycott told the BBC's The Cricket Social.

West Indies reached 127-6 in their second innings, a lead of 339.

Boycott, 78, said: "You can't say it was West Indies' pace of old.

"It was good bowling of a reasonable pace that put it on a line and a length with lateral movement.

"But this is Test cricket. You are supposed to play through that and have technique and mental discipline."

Jennings top-scored with 17, fellow opener Rory Burns managed only two and Jonny Bairstow - in only his second Test at number three - made 12.

Bairstow is England's third different number three in their past six Tests, while Jennings and Burns are two of 13 openers England have selected in the past five years.

"For a long while now our top three hasn't been good enough," said Boycott, who averaged 47.72 in 108 Tests for England between 1964 and 1982.

"In Test cricket, if you are two down for nothing it is hard work and you are under pressure all of the time."

Boycott said the lack of candidates at the top of the order is a "condemnation" of county cricket.

"The problem is there's nobody else around," he said. "I don't see anyone else out there that's any good."
