West Indies [289 & 415/6d] beat England [77 & 246] by 381 runs in the first Test, lead series 1-0

Failure to detect sarcasm = 100%.

This Holder chap is too low in the order though.

Sorry for that mate.

I think Holder bats at 8 because he bowls a lot of overs so he needs time to rest. He’s a genuine all rounder.

Jason Holder is almost unquestionably the most likeable man in world cricket currently. He so deserves moment this on his home ground. A few wickets in the 4th innings would complete a dream match for him.

West Indies dishing out an 80s style beatdown here :))

This is the West Indies we came to love and fear.

Roach is a wonderful fast bowler, his record doesn't do him justice. Playing for a better team he'd average below 25 easily.

Burns is fun to watch. Moves so much before the ball is bowled and looks away as well. But seems to work for him.

Has Roach changed his action? Haven't seen him for a few years so I can't remember.

are we going to see the first ever 600+ run chase in test cricket ?

What a knock by holder. Amazing partnership. England need huge partnerships. Seems very difficult for them to chase down mammoth target of 628.

They just have the luxury to keep attacking them. Don't think Holder was at his best today with ball.

England close on 56/0.

Just another 572 runs to win.

18 wickets fall yesterday.

No wickets fall today.

Test cricket is mad.

No chance at all of England winning.

Even to save it would take a day of rain, and none of these batters know how to dig in and occupy the crease.

This pitch is a strange beast, although I'd expect the West Indian fast bowlers to extract more life out of it by virtue of being taller and quicker. The only way England escape is if rain washes out a couple of sessions.

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados – West Indies captain Jason Holder spoke to members of the media after Day 3 of the first Test of the Wisden Trophy Series at Kensington Oval on Friday.

Holder scored a superb double century and shared a record unbroken stand of 295 for the seventh wicket with Shane Dowrich as the West Indies dominated England.

The home side declared at 415-6 in the second innings to set the visitors 628 to win. England ended on 56-0 – still 572 behind with two days left to play. It was a wicketless day and 344 runs were scored in contrast to Day 2 when 18 wickets fell for 229 runs.

Holder and Dowrich came together late on Thursday evening when the Windies were in a spot of bother at 120-6 and batted until after tea on Friday when the declaration came.

Holder, the highly-rated allrounder, batted majestically to record a career-best 202 not out from 229 balls with 136 runs in boundaries – 22 fours and eight towering sixes. It was his third Test century – the first 103 not out batting at Number 8 against England in Antigua four years ago and the second was 110 against Zimbabwe in Bulawayo in October 2017, batting at Number 9.

Holder’s knock was the third highest by a Number 8 in Test history behind only the Pakistani duo – Wasim Akram (257 not out) and Imtiaz Ahmed (209).

Dowrich, the reliable wicket-keeper, played some eye-catching shots off both the front foot and the back foot to remain unbeaten on 116 not out – with 11 fours and a six off 224 balls. It was also his third Test century. The others: 125 not out against Sri Lanka in Trinidad seven months ago, and 103 against Zimbabwe in Bulawayo in October 2017 – when he shared a partnership of 212 with Holder. They have two other century stands in Test cricket.

“Shane and myself, we have a really good friendship. We have known each other from school cricket days so we complement each other well while batting,” Holder said.

“I was ecstatic when I reached my double … lots of hard work and effort went into it. The double was never in my thoughts, but I got close and went on and pushed for it. We needed a hundred today and I went out there and got it. We need wickets tomorrow, so I have another job on my hands.”

Holder added: “It was beautiful day … a wonderful day and I’m happy with the way things went. It was some challenging bowling from England, very difficult to bat especially against (Ben) Stokes and Jimmy (Anderson). Was great to have friends and family here watching … this is where I made my debut and a ground where I enjoy playing.”

Dowrich was also pleased with his performance.

“It was a matter of playing ball by ball and batting steadily. We knew we had time to bat so we played sensibly and got the rewards. The pitch is a lot better for batting than yesterday when 18 wickets fell, and as guys who play here often we are fully aware of the conditions and what to expect,” he said.

“But at the end of the day, there was some spin and bounce so there is a lot to think about tomorrow. It was the most special day I’ve had in a West Indies shirt but it would be more special later on – tomorrow or Sunday – if we win the match and go 1-0 up in the series.”

England will not win this test match.

IMO, Holder should have not declared until one hour into the fourth day, but I can understand why he declared when he did.

A bit of rain forecast so I see it as a positive move. Trying to give maximum time for the win.

Yes he could have ground England a little further but WI grounds don't drain or dry as well as Oz or some English grounds. Can easily lose a session or two.

Said it on page 1 here that Holder should be at 7 followed by 4 bowlers .
Extremely poor declaration , 100 runs late . Rain forecast on last 2 days & this batting for runs beyond 500 might cost hosts a victory . Pitch has flattened out & if visitors bat sensibly , a draw on cards .

What makes you think Leach is better than Rashid? And which spinner is better than Moeen?

Rashid as i said earlier is so mediocre that he would not make it to a Ranji squad in India & there are over 30 of them .
Moeen & Stokes are your all rounders & must bowl besides 3 pure bowling options .

Ranji squads comment is an evasion, you didn’t answer my question. Which pure bowlers available to England are better than Moeen and Rashid?

The awkward fact is that these are the best two spinners available. Leach is no better with the ball and a tailender to boot, so picking him would weaken the side.

The ECB has produced one test spinner in twenty years - Swann, probably by accident not intent.

It’s not a question of picking specialists, it’s a question of the wrong bowling options in this match. Broad and Wood should have played instead of Curran and Rashid. But after Curran’s recent good bowling record and Broad’s loss of pace I can see why they picked Curran.

Now Anderson and Stokes have been overbowled which is very bad for England in the context of the series. Holder’s decision to keep them on was clever.

Holder declared late by at least an hour if not 2 . You do not risk going 1-0 to run down Anderson & Stokes for next 2 Test .
Ranji squad is not evasion , just telling you Rashid is no Test spinner . You could have played Broad for him if not Leach & Wood over Curran any day . Giving unnecessary weightage to batting ability of shoddy bowlers will not work in Tests for long .

2 full days to bat, interesting to see how long england can starve off heavy defeat here.

Of course you do, England couldn’t chase down 500, couldn’t even chase down 350. Holder kept them running around to tire them out.

Root didn’t pick Rashid and Curran for their batting, he picked them because he thought they were the best chance of bowling WI out. He was wrong this time.

It just so happens that most of the best bowlers available to England can also bat. You don’t pick a specialist if he is no better a bowler than the all-rounder, you pick the all-rounder.

Overall England look woefully undercooked but that is the nature of touring these days, nobody gives the touring side the chance to get meaningful practice in, so Root could only guess which five bowlers would be most effective. I am sure he will get it right next test.

There is no risk. WI had this in the bag even if they batted for one more session.

‘Good reality check’ for England’s Test ambitions – Jos Buttler

After stumps on Friday, 25 January, in Barbados, England trailed the Windies by 572 runs with still two days to go, and Jos Buttler, their vice-captain, laid the blame squarely at the feet of the batting unit.

England were bundled out for 77 in their first innings, and with Jason Holder scoring a maiden Test double century at his home ground along with Shane Dowrich’s hundred, the Windies set England a daunting target of 628.

That, Buttler said, was not what was expected from the side ranked No.3 on the MRF Tyres ICC Test rankings and harbouring hopes of rising

“With the bat we have fallen well below,” said Buttler. “Our aim is to be the No.1 side in the world and that was nowhere near good enough. We have had a good run of games, but when playing abroad it is about adapting to conditions.

“We have to be better at coming through tough situations when guys are bowling well. It is a good reality check as a side about where we are at.”

That said, Buttler insisted England were better than what the scorecard suggested. “(Being bowled out for 77) was a really poor reflection on us as a side. We are much better than that,” he said. “In those situations, you always feel you will get a partnership and seize the initiative back. We were never able to do that.

“We were not good enough to grind out a period of play and that really hurts you in Test cricket when you have a drastically poor session. Today was pretty thankless out there but the guys kept putting in. Ben Stokes and Jimmy Anderson showed unbelievable passion to play for England by keeping going.”

That Anderson and Stokes had to steam in repeatedly was down to the fact that England’s spinners had a poor outing. The visitors had a vastly different understanding of the pitch than the hosts – while the Windies opted for four seamers in the XI, all of whom impressed, England picked both Moeen Ali and Adil Rashid.

“Yes, potentially with hindsight,” said Buttler when asked if England’s selection could have been better. “It was a tough, brave call for the guys who make those decisions. [But] selection is not why we were 77 all out. That is the biggest factor in the game at the moment.

“Whether our selection was right or not, if we had scored runs in the first-innings, we would have been in a position to utilise that bowling attack. We did not get the runs on the board which probably highlighted that.”

Joseph draws the first blood. As per the commentary only a very tall fielder could catch that. Holder was there :)

The pitch is good enough to bat on for a while. Root and Bairstow need to plan to stay the day. No excuses, just good test cricket.

Day 4: Lunch Break - England need 494 runs

Burns the last man out for 84

The match might be over today. Wicket before lunch must have dented English confidence.
Chase did the damage.
Chase always reminds me of Shannon Gabriel, Yasir Shah.
And Fazeer. Why did he do that

Buttler should be captain.

Yep. He is calm and has the gravitas and the brains.

Sad to see Burns go when he was close to a maiden test century but still a good knock.

All to do for Bowledstow and Root now.

This can be a big win for WI , they need a series win over a good side to boost there cricket

It would certainly be better to see England get to at least 350 or so than to just roll over.

Still will be an absolute thumping, but it could come with the tiniest bit of pride still intact, and then with a chance to come back in the next game.

How will that make up for 77 all out

While you are chasing such a massive total in the 4th innings your mind is going to be scrambled with a hopeless feeling. ONly batsmen with immense concentration can ride through it. Root is a good batsman. But there is a reason why he has trouble converting 70s and 80s into 100s. Concentration levels are not that high.

His concentration levels were fine before he was made skipper.

Pride to play for now. Stokes and Buttler can at least keep WI chasing the leather for a bit.
