What's new

West Indies [289 & 415/6d] beat England [77 & 246] by 381 runs in the first Test, lead series 1-0

England have taken WI lightly, they even declined a tour match as they thought Windies will be steamrolled.

WI always seems to pull up their game against ENG, probably colonial rivalry still lingers in their mind!

Looks like an embarrassing defeat is coming their way.

WI 289, 415/6 decl
ENG 77, 217/6 (70.5 Ovs) CRR: 3.06
Day 4: Tea Break - England need 411 runs

Not looking good for England.

That is almost undermining the briliiance of West Indies. There was no sign of them taking lightly. They were just blown away with brilliant bowling. England had no answers to their full balls or short balls. Some of them were not really comfortable against bouncers.

Agreed.

England needed to win the toss again to have a chance at winning.

Moeen Ali has scored too many ducks in his 50-60 test career.

What a catch by Campbell. Barmy Army old man shaking his head in disbelief there. Can't accept how mediocre England actually are :P

Chase, Hetmyer, Hope, Braithwaite, Holder, and Joseph.

This is an excellent group with individuals who are young and most importantly, not afraid to play with flair.

What do you think they lack (specialist bowlers, batsmen, top-order or middle-order, grinders, etc) that can catapult them to the top?

It was a brilliant spell of bowling to dismiss Eng in 70 odd runs. It was not about Eng taking things lightly. Eng has often struggled in WI. I think last time they struggled as well.

Except B'desh no one has played so poor against them on WI soil in the past 3-4 years.

England is prone to at least 1 heavy defeat in every series Now days. Let's see how much they improve from here in the next test.

They have won one series in WI in 51 years.

England tend to get easily overrated since they also have flashes of brilliance and can win away at the bigger countries.

hopefully Roach will get MoM award.. he deserves it better than holder...

Chase completely owned England in the 2nd innings. Chase outfoxed Curran to seal the series. Ashwin was bowling pies to Curran

Excellent bowling from chase, pathetic batting from england.

Congrats WI on excellent all round performance.

West Indies dishing out a hammering. Players thanking the fans in a nice touch.

The problem for West Indies has been consistency. After the famous Headingley chase, Hope and Brathwaite did little afterwards.

There's been too many false dawns where after some individual Test wins they revert back to mediocrity. They need to win home series consistently and have a huge opportunity here v ENG.

I like this current crop - young, hungry and led by a level headed skipper in Holder.

I think they will still take a minimum of five years to regain a top ranking.

However, they now need a top-notch coach they can push this team to the next level.

They have all the talent they can acquire; it’s a matter of learning how to utilize it correctly.

Under Holder they are getting better.

Played WI.

How did England fall to a non-turning slow bowler? Nobody seems to have the will to stop a collapse, they go down like dominoes.

That is what you call a hammering.

England have had a wake-up call after perhaps underestimating Windies.

It helps they are getting the administrative side sorted. Johnny Grave and Jimmy Adams are good appointments, they've changed the nature of pitches in the Caribbean which have been too slow and spin friendly, and have brought the T20 rebels back in the white ball teams.

In home Tests, WI should continue preparing seam friendly pitches as they've found a dangerous pace combination. Winning away is a bonus, but just making the Caribbean a fortress again will be an improvement over recent years.

In ODIs, their problem is terrible strike rotation. It doesn't hurt them in WT20s as their powerhitting compensates for it, but in 50 overs you need to run those 1s and 2s. Also, their bowling attack is the worst amongst all teams since the 2015 WC.

Since the 2016 Sharjah Test, WI have won 8 out of 21 Tests.

It's not mindblowing figures but winning nearly 1 in 3 is decent given where they were pre-2016.

He is an intelligent and accurate bowler.

He averaged 47 in tests before this match. Now he has outbowled Lance Gibbs. So much for picking allrounders not specialists....

Today he bowled accurately. Not many freebies. He is a batsman mainly. Bats at 5 for WI. He is a support bowler not a specialist. Their no.8,9,10,11 are proper bowlers who can purely qualify as bowlers. Guys like Ali, Rashid, Curran won't be selected purely as bowlers or batsmen.

We Hate England & Australia, We love everyone else :) . Two of the most disrespectful teams we have ever faced. U guys know the history

Dunno how many times I have to say this, but all those guys are in the side as bowlers.

Moeen has a test tender and five fivefers.

Curran averaged 25 with the ball before this match, better than Broad and Wood who average 28 and 41 respectively.

Always rated Jimmy Adams, he should have played more tests. Glad he is making an impact in management.

Clearly not learning lessons from last two tours then as they underestimated them then aswell and ended with a series loss and draw.

Daaaaamn. That is something. WI are pretty underrated at home you have to say. England, Pak and NZ are all lumped into the same ranking, NZ probably a bit ahead of the other 2 after beating Pak 2-0.

2-1. not 2-0

Off-spinner Roston Chase had one of the best bowling performances in West Indies history to grab the amazing figures of 21.4-2-60-8 as the home side beat England by a whopping 381 runs. The final wicket of the match was the 50th of his Test career.

The six-footer recorded the second-best bowling analysis by a West Indian against England, behind 8-45 by the legendary Curtly Ambrose – 29 years ago also at Kensington Oval. The fact that he has four Test centuries to his name, means Chase has now become the first West Indian to make a Test ton and also take an eight-wicket haul in his career.

The all-time best bowling figures for West Indies are:

Jack Noreiga – 9-95 v India in Trinidad, 1971

Colin Croft – 8-29 v Pakistan in Trinidad, 1977

Lance Gibbs – 8-38 v India in Barbados, 1962

Curtly Ambrose – 8-45 v England in Barbados, 1990

Devendra Bishoo – 8-49 v Pakistan in Dubai, 2016

Roston Chase – 8-60 v England in Barbados, 2019

Asked to make 628 to win, England were bowled out for 246 after tea on the fourth day. The victory sparked celebrations and the Windies players were congratulated on the field of play by Mia Mottley, Prime Minister of Barbados.

Holder was full of praise and congratulated Chase on his herculean effort.

“Roston was a champion for us out there today, he put his hand up and counted when it mattered the most. He was excellent. We asked him to do a job and he stood up. Hats off to him and the entire team for a job well done… we planned really well and this was a great result to a truly wonderful and memorable performance,” Holder said.

“It was a really good match for me personally. To come back the way I’ve come back I’m really pleased. I have put in a lot of hard work over the last couple of months trying to get myself back to full fitness. I’ve had a lot of emotion bottled up for a long time. We still have a long way to go. One Test match doesn’t make a summer. We’ve been in this position before, so lots of hard work to be done. We ticked a few boxes in this test match but it’s a matter of turning up in Antigua and doing the same,” Holder added.

Chase also celebrated the memorable performance and said he came into the day’s play fully aware of the workload. He said he held several discussions and planned his bowling with Mushtaq Ahmed, the spin bowling consultant.

“Looking at the wicket, I always thought I would come into play in the second innings. The quicker bowlers set it up for us in the first innings and ‘Mushy’ told me I’m going to have to bowl 25 overs in the second innings, to get my mind ready for it, so I was always prepared to do some work, to give the pacers a rest. I started to pick up some wickets and it went from there,” Chase said.

“I just tried to be consistent and land it my areas, despite what the batsmen were doing, put some revs on the ball and vary my pace a bit. It gives us big confidence for the series, because England are a higher-ranked team than ourselves. It’s for us to carry on from here and continue to do what we do well, the basics and focus on our processes, we should be all right.”

Holder, the highly-rated allrounder, was named Player-of-the-Match due to his majestic 202 not out from 229 balls in the second innings which helped to set England a target of 628 to win. He also held three catches in the slips and took two wickets in the England first innings of 77 all out.

Scores: WEST INDIES 289 (Shimron Hetmyer 81, Shai Hope 57, Roston Chase 54; James Anderson 5-46, Ben Stokes 4-59) and 415-6 declared (Jason Holder 202 not out, Shane Dowrich 116 not out; Moeen Ali 3-78) ENGLAND 77 (Kemar Roach 5-17, Jason Holder 2-15, Alzarri Joseph 2-20) and 246 (Rory Burns 84; Roston Chase 8-60)

And Shastri-Kohli are happy that they gave tough fight to this side inspite of a 4-1 loss :virat:ravi
