What's new

West Indies [306 & 17/0] beat England [187 & 132] by 10 wickets in the 2nd Test, lead series 2-0

England have not picked the right players this series. Nearly everyone is out of position.

This is what their middle-order should look like:

3) Root
4) Bairstow (wk)
5) Buttler
6) Stokes
7) Moeen

Beyond this, they need to pick the best four bowlers in the country. Curran is not one of them. I'm also not totally convinced about Buttler, doesn't really look like a proper test player but he has enough credit in the bank to deserve a few more chances. However, he should be batting higher than Stokes given that he's playing as a pure batsman. Root has to bat at 3, he's their best player of swing and seam, along with being their best batsman.

Bairstow can't keep and bat at 4. Foakes hasn't done anything wrong with the gloves and has battled hard out there.

I agree on Buttler. Stokes has no business at 5 averaging 33.

Wicket looks green and lively.

Broad and Anderson could be a handful.

You can't keep relying on the lower order to bail you out !

Curran has lot of holes i his batting. But through sheer determination he made some runs. Over a period teams will exploit his weaknesses. Just don't give him room.

Chris woakes can do what Curran does with bat. Hang around for a while. If expects no9 to score a 50 more often than not then theyhave to fix their top, middle order. Woakes is a proper bowler.

What a bouncer from Gabriel and then the yorker smashing the stumps. Just wonderful watching this classic West Indian pace bowling !

300 would put WI in a strong position. 350 would be ideal.

However WI batsmen aren't known for their consistency.

Chris Woakes really should be playing, he's World Class

WIN has a wonderful chance to win the series here. I think, this track won't last long and last session of Day 1 & Day 2 should be the best time to bat, but by Day 3 it'll start to crack with uneven bounce. A lead of 100 should be match winning here. Don't see ENG scoring 250+ in 2nd time, while WIN also won't chase more than 170. Moeen has kept ENG in game still, but his main job is coming with ball in 2nd & 4th innings.

Great channel by Broad. He is going to make something happen by the look of it. But just spits off of the pitch

Campbell trying a Dilscoop against the new ball.

No need to do anything silly, just see out this new ball spell.

Broad has riled him up good by constantly talking to him. He is letting it get to him. He should just focus on leaving the ball.

Credit to the way WI batsmen are playing. They very rarely follow the ball. That is why their good balls don't find the edge.

My god, first you're bowling 70s MPH fare even in the first spell and then you do bowl a good delivery you overstep.

Excellent end to another good day for West Indies. Openers emerge unscathed.

Some of the Asian team players can learn a thing or two from Brathwhite. Impressive concentration levels.

Blimey, that’s the first time I haven’t known that England are playing a test match.

Doesn’t look like I missed much.

Hasan123 You reminded me the other other day that a certain poster on PP strongly believes that England is the best Test team in the world :))

Absolutely hillairious that he believed that. I live in UK and they are struggling for openers ,genuine quick bowlers, and quality spinners. But they are the best test side in the world because of beating Sri Lanka:)) .

Can't wait for 2nd test SL vs Aus. They are going to troll Vaughn in the commentary box big time.

England should make some changes in batting position of their batsmen and gloves has to be given back to Foakes. Not sure who made this plan of giving the gloves back to Bairstow.

Burns
Opener
Root(suits at 4-5 but it is not like Bairstow has shown any evidence of scoring big)
Bairstow
Buttler
Stokes
Moeen
Foakes(wkt)
Curran
Broad
Anderson

There needs to be a quote book made for him. It's an endless list of drivel.

Only in your fantasies are England a no.1 side. Put your bruised ego aside with these pathetic excuses.

Another brilliant day for West Indies. They have been brilliant at home and their pace attack has been amazing. Are West Indies once again bringing back their golden era with bowling? You never know, only time will tell. But the signs are good though.

I see that england dropped just one all rounder. They are determined to learn their lessons the hard way.

Windies pacers wreck havoc once again to bowl England out for 187

England’s batsmen invoked memories of their first Test display after they were bowled out for just 187 on day one of the second Test in Antigua.

The Windies’ fast bowlers proved themselves to be too hot to handle once again, as England collapsed to 93/6 after Jason Holder won the toss and elected to field. An 85-run partnership from Moeen Ali and Ben Foakes allowed the English to lessen the blow of another faltering performance with the bat, before the visitors lost their last four wickets for just nine runs to end the first innings.

Kraigg Brathwaite and John Campbell then blunted the new-ball threat of England’s seamers, taking the Windies to 30/0 at stumps.

England began with a new opening combination at the helm, Joe Denly making his Test debut in place of the dropped Keaton Jennings. He lost his partner, Rory Burns (4), in just the fifth over of the day, before Denly (6) departed in very tame fashion, slashing hard at a wide loosener from Alzarri Joseph, an edge from the toe-end of his bat travelling safely into the hands of wicketkeeper Shane Dowrich.

While Joe Root (7) and Jos Buttler (1) also fell cheaply, Jonny Bairstow was at his counter-attacking best, a stroke-filled half-century arriving just before lunch. Unfortunately for England, Bairstow (52) departed just two balls after the break, a Windies review paying off, with a full-length delivery from Kemar Roach shown to be hitting leg stump.

Ben Stokes’ (14) lean time with the bat continued, as Shannon Gabriel had the left-hander poke at a shortish delivery, an edge carrying behind to Dowrich. Much to the relief of the England dressing room, Moeen and Foakes were ready to scrap for every run.

Moeen put aside a frustrating batting display in the first Test to return his highest Test score since August 2017, hitting 60 from 104 balls, his eight fours accompanied with a smoking six over deep mid-wicket from the bowling of Roston Chase.

Foakes accumulated with patience at the other end, as the pair batted through till tea. Moeen (60) eventually succumbed, trying to drive on the up only to miscue the ball to Gabriel at midwicket. Foakes (35) then followed in an unusual manner, playing a pull shot a bit too early, with the ball deflecting off his glove, onto his hip and then the stumps.

Sam Curran (6) and James Anderson (1) joined the collapse to end England’s time with the bat. Roach was the pick of the bowlers, collecting figures of 4/30.

James Anderson and Stuart Broad then resumed their new-ball partnership for the first time since the English summer, after Broad had been left out of the side in the previous match. While Kraigg Brathwaite was watchful, John Campbell attempted to demonstrate his attacking prowess, only to engage in a continuation of plays-and-misses. An attempted scoop off the bowling of Broad was adventurous, but only resulted in the ball rattling his helmet.

The pair will resume their stay at the crease tomorrow, after sealing a strong end to another sensational day for the Windies in this series.

I'm sure Bairstow would beg to differ. However, I guess England don't need six bowling options with both Stokes and Moeen evolving into bowling all-rounders. They can have Foakes at #7 and Moeen at #8 for the Ashes.

I see that england dropped just one all rounder. They are determined to learn their lessons the hard way.

Nobody can tell me which of the specialist bowlers available would actually improve the bowling.

Cook said it was the most uneven bounce he had ever seen. And a green mamba to boot. Like an old style Headingley wicket, but harder to bat on. Certainly a good toss to win!

I think W.I have realized this will be a tough wicket to bat on but it may improve a little on days 2/3 if wicket keeps drying out, so best plan is to occupy crease and take their time getting runs as there is no rush, also batting last if they have to on such a wicket will be tough.

Key to the revival of WI, is to create these types of green wickets at home, this will encourage more kids to take up fast bowling which will hopefully bring back the next generation of Holdings, Marshalls etc...

Holding and the boys played on true bounce concrete pitches, not uneven green seamers.

If WI bowlers come up on greentops they will be relying on uneven bounce and seam movement and then will not be able to cope on the Subcontinent and in Australia.

Also don’t forget that these West Indian home Tests use the Dukes Ball.

All the more reason for the likes of Anderson and Broad to have done better.

Not really. Anderson got 4-40 in one dig, but then had to bowl again on no rest after England only got 77, with no support from the spinners. Bear in mind that he is 36.

Broad has bowled seven overs in the series and looks really good again.

Pitch seems to have quietened down . I wonder in that case how decisive a 100 run lead would be .

West Indian players were beaten countless times yesterday. One of the good thing they did was, they did not follow the ball. THey played the line. So even if there was any movement of the surface it continued missing the bat. Extremely disciplined batting by Brathwhite. Campbell got carried away a few times. But overall he was also showing lot of restraint.

Did not watch them bat but 30 in 21 overs shows it was a disciplined effort from both sides .
Broad pitched 1st ball up this over & it moved . What chances are there that this pitch goes to sleep on day 3 & 4 we may get 400 kind of scores ?

Campbell is living a charmed life year. Broad is all over him.

Campbell has character. Looks better than his FC average of 30.

At last. Stokes makes it happen yet again.

Can England get into them now?

Horror wicket. Ridiculous bounce and movement from Stokes.

Brilliant from WIN - they have set a platform to bat effectively once in this game. Just needs to make sure that, they are at most 4 down by 2nd ball - should take a 150+ lead here. This is going to be the best day for batting here, and if they can bat till lunch tomorrow, ENG might not have a any chance here batting 2nd time.

England 's pathetic selection policy responsible for this horror show , going in the Test with just 2 bowlers & 1 world class all rounder who should be bowling maximum 15 overs per innings . Curran is picked for his batting ability [ 15 wickets in 9 ] & Moeen [ 167 wickets in 57 tests at s/r of 62 & avg of over 37 ] too .
Picking bowlers for their batting ability does NOT work in Tests . My bowling attack would have been Jimmy , Broad , Wood , Leach + Stokes . Play Moeen as a batsmen [ avg 30 ] if you have no better options .
