What's new

West Indies v Pakistan | 3rd Test | Roseau, Dominica | May 10-14, 2017 | Day 1

Any other lessons Azhar should be learning from Shan Masood?

The awful Shan Masood fails once again in Tests. Can only hope he gets dropped for rest of time now...

Azhar and shan killed the purpose of left right combo.. Shan was struggling against off spinner and yet they both didnt even try to rotate strike so azhar could face the off spinner.

He never looked comfortable vs Chase. Was more of aquestion of when, not if.

Masood :out 9(30), 19/1

My word.. no planning here. Getting out to an off spinner who doesn't hv a doosra is beyond me..

Horrible batting pair, no guts whatsoever.
Meanwhile Shan gone, it was on the cards for last couple of overs, he was clueless against spin and it was a matter of time before he nicked one to slips. Comparing or considering him better than Shehzad or Sami for that matter is a straight insult to the later's caliber, he's as incompetent as one can get. I'm dumbfounded by how in the hell he keeps finding his way back into the Test squad every now and then.

I'm sure we'll get a thread saying how this is part of the plan and how the pitch isn't as easy some think etc etc...

That was expected chase has been bowling beautifully! He should never be selected! Sami is much better!

13 overs in to the first mornings play, overcast conditions and we lose our opener to an off spinner.

That tells you everything you need to know about Shan Masood

Azhars only strong suite is his temperament which is allowing him to average 50 in test cricket , talent is overrated.

Now imagine shan vs proper spinner on a proper turner,,, I can guarantee that would be the best comedy ever.

Yet again it all comes down to Azhar Ali .. If he fails here its a test match gone.

WI playing with 10 players.. their keeper looks like on course of winning the worst keeper to have ever playing test cricket.

This Shan Masood keeps making it into the team because of his connections.

Its Imran Farhat situation all over again. Anyone who knows cricket could tell after 10 balls of his batting he is club level.

Beautiful batting. Pakistan run rate of 1.71.

but but but that is how you playing test match cricket :sree

I hope we hv seen a last of him here if he fails in second innings too which is more than likely to happen.

If our approach to batting is good, why don't we see the best batsmen in the world tuk tuk at a SR of 30? Why do the likes of Smith, Kohli, Root, Williamson, Amla etc. have s SR of 50 consistently? Even Cook, who is a defensive batsman, rarely bats below a SR of 45.

I will take that any day of the week. Temperament over Talent..

Well, it is Test cricket. Temperament is what gets you scores and Azhar has bags of it. You can out him up there with these modern day greats like Sangakarra and Kallis in terms of temperament.

Yah he is good in that aspect but one would not go and watch his innings on youtube , taking nothing away from him though.

If you listen to PP experts then those world-class batsmen don't know the ABC of test match batting.

Cook is an amazing player, I feel like he's underrated as he's always in the shadow of the players you've mentioned.

Azhar Ali reading PP when he is on the non-strikers LMAO :))

He's a legendary opener, but underrated because he hasn't succeeded in LOIs cricket. Batsmen who excel in multiple formats are always rated higher.

Azhar, :six. I feel like we're gonna get a similar Azhar in CT if selected - start off slow, and up the SR with boundaries after 7 overs of being 24/0. Nota fan of this, Hafeez does the same too.

If Pakistan score 300, WI better hope for rain. 4th and 5th day against Yasir will likely be a nightmare.

Tuk Tukk or hit theres no in between... Pathetic approach by our batsmen... oh sorry once a legend used to do that.. so nothing is wrong..

It's difficult for any player no matter who you are to be consistently great at every format. Just look at Kohli right now. Awful performances, maybe due to too much cricket, but he's still top 3 ODI, T20 and top 10 Test batsman.

Its a mindset Misbah has deeply instilled in the team during his tenure, even though his farewell will go a long way to rectify or completely eradicate this poor approach but doubt it'll happen anytime soon 'cause we've his proteges in the form of AA and AS to take his tuk-tuk culture forward.

Babar has real problem with inside edges , tooany angled bat shots outside off.

He's still in ODI mode but these experiences should help him greatly, more exposure at the Test level will do him a world of good. The man is sound technically, just needs to settle down and get his eye in before picking his moments; his intent is refreshing but has been his downfall in recent times but it is something which can be rectified

Tbh i would rathar have a good odi batsman than a test batsman.

In the next two years we are playing only 16 matches. That is a maximum of 32 innings. If Azhar Ali bats at his batting average of 46 then he will score roughly 1500 runs. He is about 4900 right now. So at the age of 34 he will have 6400 runs. With 3600 to get to be close to YK. That means he would have to play approximately a further 4 years after the age of 34 to break YK's record. How many Pakistani cricketers before YK and Misbah have played till the age of 38? There is generally a sharp decline in form after age 34-35 and then a string of bad series means permanent expulsion from the squad.

I don't think it's possible to open at international level after 36-37.

This pitch looks like a batting paradise.. Both Azhar and Babar need to score big and quick hundreds today... Enough of batting in a shell.. Pakistan should win this test by an innings..

Different conditions require different approaches. Like I said in another thread:

Australia's run rate in the Windies this decade is below 3 runs an over.

Brendon McCullum's New Zealand batted slower than 3 runs an over.

England batted at 3.30 RPO but that series was mostly played on different wickets to this series. In the test they played in Bridgetown, where this current test is being played, England were bowled out for 257 in 96.3 overs (2.66 RPO) and 123 in 42.1 overs (2.91 RPO).

India's run rate in the Windies this decade is 3.11 RPO but in the one test they played in Bridgetown guess what happened to that modern run rate? 201 all out in 68 overs (2.95 RPO) and 269/6 in 102 overs (2.63 RPO while setting up a declaration!). In Kingston, where the first test of this series was played, India took 171.1 overs to score 500. That's 2.92 RPO, to score five hundred after bowling the Windies out for 196!

Saffers went at exactly 3 RPO. Who wants to bet if they scored slower or quicker than 3 RPO in Bridgetown? If you guessed slower then congratulations, you get a high five from me! 346 in 134.4 overs. (2.56 RPO)

If we played our home games in England or Australia then we'd bat faster in general but we don't, we play most of our games in the UAE and Asia so we will naturally tailor our approach to those conditions.

If it was purely about mentality then Australia would come to the UAE and score at 3.7 RPO

Only in Pakistan, the selectors use retrograde selection method by dropping a good opener like Sami Aslam and selecting a TTF like Shan Masood.

How slow is this damn outfield?!?!?

Atleast 25 runs tu khaaliye

Oh dear. If they want to improve in the field, the Windies need to select more youngsta beauties like this kid
