What's new

West Indies v Pakistan | 3rd Test | Roseau, Dominica | May 10-14, 2017 | Day 1

Good session for Pakistan, when a team wins the toss and chooses to bowl they expect to take more than just one wicket by lunch.

Unqualified groundstaff. Been a problem in the WI for some time.

Clumps of grass were coming up when the fielders ran hard after the ball. With rain predicted for most days I wonder how much playing time will be lost due to a soggy outfield?

Look man, we already have Babar playing for us. In my opinion, Shafiq moves up to #4. Hafeez comes in at #5. Then Salahuddin debuts at #6 for the next match. Perfect blend of experience and youth. Also, Professor gives us a much needed 5th bowler.

Man. Literally anyone would be better than Hafeez, FC ave 34, at #5. I see
his utility in ODIs I really do but in Tests, if someone put a gun to my head
and asked me to name someone to bat for my life, Hafeez would literally be
the last name on the list. If you are playing in Lanka there is no excuse not
to give Fawad a run in that spot.

Pakistan likely blew their best chance to win the series in WI courtesy of some selfish cricket.

Tea Taken Early and still 48 overs left - rain has stopped

Let's hope Babar can replicate the greatness of Shezhad in the second test :shezzy

Need to score 300-350 at a good rate to have chance to win this match.

If it's going to rain every day as the forecast indicates then a win is going to be very difficult, but that doesn't mean we should be complacent. We've got off to a good start here and we need to be aiming for much more than 350.

The rain is going to ensure the pitch has plenty of juice in it for the entire test so if we can put on 400+ somehow and put scoreboard pressure on the Windies, you never know what will happen.

Only four bowlers means that unless we bowl the Windies out in a session, we won't enforce the follow-on. So we can assume that we're going to bat twice no matter what, so it's best that we pile on as many runs as possible now rather than leaving it for the third innings. The third innings needs to be just for letting the bowlers get some rest as much as anything.

The key here is to bat out this session today and set up a platform for the middle order to accelerate tomorrow, today is about setting up a foundation.

Azhar and Babar should be eying big scores here

Definitely. 40 overs left today, even if these guys slow down that will leave us on 200 at stumps. If these two are still around at the end of the days play and the middle order comes in with the stage set for them, we're looking at a good chance of 420+ and putting the Windies in before the end of tomorrow's play. Get a wicket or two with the new ball and who knows, maybe we can get a win even if we're going to end up losing a day's play to rain over the course of the entire test.

If it rains more than that though, then we'll need a miracle.

Azhar Ali showing once more that he is the best opener in the world.

60-40 draw ??

Hopefully too much play isn't lost.

Need to get 400 plus and put the pressure on WI

60-40 draw ??

Haven't taken a proper look at the forecasts but, if rain doesn't stop play again today, then we'll have lost around 20 overs to rain today. If the rest of the game follows that pattern, and there is no guarantee that it will so it's all purely hypothetical, then we'll lose just over an entire day's play over the course of the whole test so yeah, draw would be more likely than either side winning.

It's definitely possible to win a test in four days of play but it really needs us to hammer home this start and pile on a big first innings total.

Of course that assumes that today is as bad as it gets for rain stopping play, much more than this and it's a nailed on draw.

Good to see Babar putting the loose ball away. Don't want him going the tuk tuk way.

Bit weird that Azhar is the best test opener in the world right now, but also perhaps one of the most limited batsmen when it comes to shot making.

His concentration and hard working abilities are unmatched.

Hard Work >> "Talunt" any day

Babar Azam to score a big ton here .. Its a flat wicket... Both Azhar and Babar need to score big runs...
Babar should improve his average..

Waqar truly hates Sarfaraz doesn't he??? Still belittling Sarfaraz.. He is the reason Azhar the clueless captain got the LOI captaincy..

Azhar has the shots, he just knows he can score more runs if he doesn't play all of them. It's the same as Steve Waugh, when he started his career he was relatively attacking but after being dropped he realised that he would be better off shelving the hook shot because the risk wasn't worth the reward.

So everyone still has this impression that Steve Waugh was a limited batsman and he couldn't play the short ball when it's nonsense, he realised that it was more important to score bucketloads of runs than it was to appear "talented" or "aggressive".

Pakistani fans would rather have a "talented" batsman who averages 30 and looks good than a "limited" batsman who averages 50.

Wanna see YK bat, Azhar get out pleez.

I don't agree that he has all the shots. He certainly can not pull out any shots at will, we saw this in his ODI stints where his limitations show, but he still managed to score runs at a good average.

However, none of this is to demean Azhar. I have supported him since his debut, even more than Umar Amin at the time who every one was excited about and they had written off Azhar.

Babar needs to score a big one here

This is his chance to showcase his worth

Best pitch for YK to score another of his customary big hundred per series and hang his shoes.

WI looking listless. Nothing in the pitch.

Without pitch doing crazy stuff, WI cannot beat any of the top teams looks like.

Don't be distracted by the slow strike rate..
Pakistani batsmen will bat slowly even of they are playing on flat cement pitch..

Run rate is fine right now and it would look a heck a lot better on almost any other ground. So many what should be boundaries have been limited to merely 2 runs due to an extremely poor outfield.

Yup the outfield is so poor that even the best timed shots aren't going to the boundary..

By the way will it get better or worse as the match progresses?? Abdullah719 MenInG
