Formulaic? What about it was formulaic?

That it had a beginning and an ending?

Probably one of the most different movies out of Hollywood in years.

watched ramleela . one time watch , great visuals and soundtrack. Deepika looked stunning

Prisoners.

Example of a movie that has everything going for it...except the writing. Great performances by both leads and a directing/soundtrack creating an excellent ambiance. All for what? A movie that progresses through luck and unreasonable actions to deliver a message it doesn't uphold by leaving an ambiguous ending where there was absolutely no need.

6/10

Machete Kills.
5.5/10

A half baked attempt at a tribute to a B-grade action movie despite a stupendously crazy cast (Danny Trejo, Michelle Rodriguez, Antonio Banderas, Lady Gaga, Demian Bichir, Sofia Vergara, Charlie Sheen and Mel Gibson). Too many pointless characters like those of Sofia Vergara. Arguably the best performances came from Mel Gibson and Demian Bichir. I liked the Chameleon role and the casting gag of multiple actors playing him/her(!!) but even that character was pointless in the end. Some great action scenes with lot of gore and good humour(courtesy Bichir, Gibson and Charlie Sheen) but came across as too long for it's own good. A decent time waster I suppose.

funny isn't it, that even though it was a movie about astronauts stranded in space after their base gets struck by debris(an original plot indeed), after watching it i felt like i had seen this movie a hundred times before. hell anything surprising happening in this movie would have seriously taking me off guard as somehow it always seemed obvious that this was going to play out as one of the most risk-free pieces of film making ever. guess im growing tired of these blockbusters :p

'ambiguous' endings are nonsensical and an abomination. a story isn't 'ambiguous' if it ends prematurely, it simply lacks an ending. the story only exists for as long as you tell it for.

btw i'm not talking about films that end at particular, early than perhaps anticipated points for a reason/ an effect. as sometimes it makes to deprive the audience of certain outcomes. i'm talking about films that actually end before they should do, for no other reason than because they could and whichever douchebag made the decision thought he was being smart or edgy or something. when the film obviously really believes in this false concept of 'ambiguity', so much so as it to a make a pretentious point of it, that's when it's whack.

Lol but what surprising twist were you waiting for?

The movie was about the journey, was more character driven than plot driven which is why you had really a straight line plot that it followed. But i think it did it well.

Whaaaaaaaaa? Really? I loved the ending. Had the Zodiac and Sopranos style ending which was pretty appropriate for the film I thought.

9/10

Terrific film about the JFK investigation carried out by Jim Garrison (Kevin Costner). It's not a truthful account but it's a superbly made film by a director at the top of his game. Despite clocking in at more than 3 hours, it's a highly engrossing and engaging film. Also has a stunning cast with a particularly superb cameo from Donald Sutherland who utterly owns his scene without hamming. Costner's last monologue has to be seen to be believed. Good to see late John Candy in a serious role as well.

I had caught part of it before but I forgot about it, Master & Commander. So much awesomeness in a movie, definitely a classic of the genre. I can't believe I waited for so long. 9/10.

Dark Christmas

This is the older version 1974.

A sorority house is terrorized by a stranger who makes frightening phone calls and then murders the sorority sisters during Christmas break.

A good movie , thriller.

The killer is unknown till the end.

8 / 10

You mean Black Christmas I think? That's a classic. Avoid the remake.

Watched two horror movies over the past few nights.

Reincarnation (Rinne) - Japanese horror flick. Novel concept. I liked the twists and turns. Some scenes were very well done, others probably could have been done better. I still think horror movies that try to "explain" themselves too much end up losing that random chaotic horror element to them. Horror needs chaos. Not everything should be logical. But still, a few good scares. Would give it a 6.5-7/10.

Chernobyl Diaries Have been wanting to watch this for a while now. Finally got around to it with a couple of mates. Was a well developed concept, with surprisingly very few annoying characters in the film. I think it could have explored some darker themes, it had a lot more potential but just didn't seem to get it across the finish line for me. Still entertaining. Would give it a 6.5/10.

The Man with the Golden Gun (1974) a OO7 movie good watch 6.5/10 the midget guy was funny but the ending was poor

Detention ( 2010 )

A group of high school students are sent to Detention. Abandoned and locked in, images of Ghosts appear as they attempt to escape, only to find themselves connected to a past horrific death and made responsible for it with their lives.

Pretty good movie. The film keeps suspense till the end. There is a surprise in the end.

Slow in some parts though.

7 / 10

Shutter Island ( 2010 )

Drama set in 1954, U.S. Marshal Teddy Daniels is investigating the disappearance of a murderess who escaped from a hospital for the criminally insane and is presumed to be hiding nearby.

One of the best movies of this particular genre. The ending has a twist. And a good one too.

8 / 10

PS: All those who have seen this movie ( I am sure a lot of you have :) ) , do not disclose ending, so that others can also enjoy the movie.

Gravity

7.7/10

Just breathtaking, i felt each and every moment in the movie. Was such an emotional journey, the director done an incredible job. You have to appreciate how they use ONE setting and 1/2 characters to tell an epic story of survival which was so intense. I just can't emphasize enough the sophistication behind the simplicity of the story and how the director brings it to life.

This is a must watch for people who favour character development/story telling in combination with visual effects at its best. Just WOW.

A short film linked to Gravity titled Aneengaaq. Produced by Jonas Couran, son of Alfonso. The short film is tipped for an Oscar award.

Only watch if you have seen Gravity

Exam

7.5/10

An interesting movie which goes along with a little suspense and confusion.. 8 candidates are finalized and called up for an ultimate selection process for a highly profiled corporate Job in an exam hall and given a blank paper to answer a question which they need to figure out within 80 minutes of allotted time under 3 rules given by the invigilator.

Free Men

Paris, occupied France, 1942. Younes, an uneducated Algerian immigrant, ekes out a very modest living on the black market. When the police catches him they set him free provided he infiltrates the Paris Mosque and spies on the rector. Si Kaddour Ben Ghabrit is indeed suspected not only of providing false papers to Jews but of harboring some of them as well. Once within the precincts of the Mosque, Younes proves a poor secret agent, which displeases the police inspector in charge of him. In fact, at the mosque, Younes becomes every day more alert to the great tragedy in progress because of the Nazis.

A very interesting movie if we look it through the current world situation. A relatively true story atleast the character of Si Kaddour Ben Ghabrit and the main story.

Saw that movie some time back.

Very good thriller.

The end was well planned out :D

Jab tak hai jaan -7/10
Not gonna lie I thought it was gonna be the typical Bollywood movie with the same storyline etc but turns out it was quite decent .

Watched Ramleela the movie was different than typical B'wood films some dialogues were very catchy and acting was also decent even the item song was great a good watch overall

Watching Ram-Leela right now. Looks boring but I have nothing to do. Will watch it in instalments :D

Mongol:The rise of Genghis Khan.

7/10.

A saga of blood feuds, betrayals, vendettas, and a lot of action. It's visually stunning to say the least.

However, I am waiting for the sequel to witness the wrath of the great Genghis khan.

Couldn't watch after what happens in the movie. So unrealistic  Raam-Leela

Hero and Heroin meet in a Holi festival, they sing a song and fall in love, Hero goes to her home to meet her (Both families are enemies of each others) and they started Moo-Maari :inti (You know what I mean) :))

Hero's brother is killed by Heroin's brother and Hero kills Heroin's brother. Hero goes to heroin and tells her "Ab to hamara Khoon ka rishta ho gaya hai chal bhag chalte hain" :)) Heroin's brother's widow comes and tell them to run away  to end this Hate and they leave their town and are so happy :O. I couldn't watch after this. So much hype of this movie but what the hell man :|

Wow, I watched this movie last thursday. Like you said it is visually stunning and the historical context and atmosphere are well made.

I don't ask for fiction movies to be historically accurate but the problem is that most Mongols consider it to be the true way things happened and the movie has no warning against it. I therefor consider it a vast piece of propaganda and intellectual dishonnesty deserving no more than a 5/10. I facepalmed so hard with the passages about our favourite mass murderers love life who went on to have hundreds of childrens with a harem of dozens, discounting all those he raped, the part where he is shown as a fidel companion to his so-called brother when, IRL, he murdered his own brother at 14, the part where he is sold as a slave to the chinese to justify the fact that he would go on to murder dozens of millions of chinese and, most of all, ''Mongols don't kill women and children''. Seriously, how could anyone write that script with a straight face?

Historical facts aside though it is an amazing piece of story telling nd cinematic achievement I think as it shows the transformation of this character from a child to an upstart to the feared leader he becomes and you can sense it all as the audience.

One of the more remarkable things about the film was the detail etched in the battle scenes. Some legendary battle scenes.

The problem is that he was probably a sociopathic child to begin with, even by mongol standards. Storytelling wise, the characterization and motivations of the main children felt both off and cheesy. But I do agree with the rest of your post. I guess I could never shake off the feeling of watching a vast piece of propaganda.

I am into middle eastern movies made in french nowadays

A Bottle in the Gaza Sea

Tai is 17 years old. Naim is 20. She's Israeli. He's Palestinian. She lives in Jerusalem. He lives in Gaza. They were born in a land of scorched earth, where fathers bury their children. They must endure an explosive situation that is not of their choosing at an age where young people are falling in love and taking their place in adult life. A bottle thrown in the sea and a correspondence by email nurture the slender hope that their relationship might give them the strength to confront this harsh reality to grapple with it, and thereby ever so slightly change it.

Inch'Allah

Chloe is a young Canadian doctor who divides her time between Ramallah, where she works with the Red Crescent, and Jerusalem, where she lives next door to her friend Ava, a young Israeli soldier. Increasingly sensitive to the conflict, Chloe goes daily through the checkpoint between the two cities to get to the refugee camp where she monitors the pregnancies of young women. As she becomes friends with Rand, one of her patients, Chloe learns more about life in the occupied territories and gets to spend some time with Rand's family. Torn between the two sides of the conflict, Chloe tries as best she can to build bridges between her friends but suffers from remaining a perpetual foreigner to both sides. Following up her acclaimed debut-feature Le ring, filmmaker Anais Barbeau-Lavalette delivers with Inch'Allah the moving tale a young woman's encounter with war and its everyday life. Avoiding any political agenda, Chloe's story questions how one can internalize a foreign conflict without incurring any scars of their own.

Stay Alive

For a group of teens, the answer to the mysterious death of their old friend lies within the world of an online video game based on the true story of an ancient noblewoman known as the Blood Countess.

'Besharam' (2013)

1. The film is made on the emotion alone that for the first time Ranbir Kapoor and his parents (Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Singh) will be working together in a film. This idea could well have been implemented in a well made film, but here they went the other way around and made the film for the sake of this idea.

2. Apart from some funny scenes here and there, it was a non-affair and a pretty bad film to put it mildly.

Somm

A documentary about a group of young men trying to attain the almost impossible title of Master Sommelier. They can only be described as obsessive wine nerds, steeped into wine to the point of forgetting everything else around them. It's definitely one of the most difficult titles to achieve in the world, after which that person is considered literally like a Ninja master of wine. The test involves among other things, blind tasting three red and three white wines and one has to tell its characters, notes, region down to the exact location, age, make and even the wine label correctly. This documentary is about this groups pursuit to achieve this allusive title, the training and dedication required to achieve an almost magical palate. In the end when the results are being announced you can feel the joy and sorrow with them. Beautifully made and shot. Worth watching.

Death On Demand

"Wealthy college student Richard Sachs arranges a web broadcast contest originating from a local haunted house. He entices three young couples to spend Halloween night in the abandoned

I like to watching comedy movies. In my free time i watch Mr Bean movie. Please share with us what is your favorite cartoon?

'Krrish 3' (2013)

Pretty decent and entertaining. I somehow expected the project to fail to fascinate me, but it was quite good I would say.

Now, as for the point about physically disabled person being shown as a villain, maybe I am using logics over emotions and hence could be wrong, but if a person belonging to such and such religious, ethnic or national background can be depicted as a villain in a film, I don´t think this was any bad - since bad ones exist amongst good ones and vice versa, even though a physically disabled person is unlikely to cause much harm to others for obvious reasons. In fact, it might just be something to discuss with a very special friend of mine in emails. Any opinions below my post on this will be of a great value.

I will give it eight out of 10.

who would recommend a good movie or documentary?

I'd prefer historical - Soviet Russia or sth (but unbiased).
Or a really involving crime thriller..
Or any documentary on the psychology of alienation..

If I dont get anything else soon, I'll simply resort to watching Disney movies. Again.

'Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela' (2013)

Quite contrary to the view held here, I liked the film and enjoyed it:D, even though I am not a fan of Sanjay Leela Bhansali`s films as I find them to be boring. I liked Supriya Pathak`s acting in particular. The vulgarity of course has always been an issue for me and I again didn't like some of the dialogues etc.

Not many of you would know perhaps that it was an adaptation of 'Romeo and Juliet', to what extent I don't know as I have neither ever watched any film based on it, nor read the novel. I have read about it only a bit though and it does suggest of some differences being there to the original story, particularly the ending. I am a fan of Williams Shakespeare despite never having read too much of his works.

For the Hollywood-ers out there, is there any good film based on 'Romeo and Juliet' in the last 23 years or so?

Are they based on 'Romeo and Juliet'? Because that´s what I meant.

Romeo + Juliet released in 1996 starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes. A weird movie set in modern times but with Shakespearean dialogue used. It's a polarising film. You will either love it or hate it.
