A woman tries to exonerate her brother, who was convicted of murder, by proving that the crime was committed by a supernatural phenomenon.

A good slick supernatural Movie. Not that frightening , but plays with mind. Compact screenplay.

'Deliver Us from Evil' (2014)

It was a brilliant, brilliant film..... except for such a lame ending! That spoiled it a bit, but I would still rate it very highly given that it was exciting, enjoyable and kept me on my toes except just the last 15 minutes or so.

Saqs I am waiting eagerly for 'The Maze Runner' (2014), which is due to release in Germany mid-October.

Maze Runner was decent actually. Not too bad, mainly propped up by some good acting by the lead role.

Finding Fanny

I thought it would be a funny movie but got duped by the trailer. An impressive cast of naseeruddin and pankaj kapoor was wasted by a poor plot. have never seen naseeruddin in such a meaningless role. There were no comic moments, and the niche audience (there were not more than 10 people in the theatre) burst into laughter when a guy's fingers get hurt while closing the door of a car. Felt sorry for this niche segment who had come to watch a movie which must be good because it was in english. Deepika shows a lot of legs and shoulders and is the tallest (only in terms of height) among the other cast. There is a lot of derriere on show though, but not in an enticing way, more in a menopausal way. That bad. The title song is catchy though.

Khoobsurat

Fawad Khaaaaaan     :22:

I swear, I'm no fan girl, but I honestly can't get him out of my mind. Saw the movie on Sunday, and FK - as a character, a presence, an entity - completely immersed in his role of a brooding prince, delivers brilliantly! The guy's aesthetic appeal is bordering on perfection! He was the only Khoobsurat thing about the movie (apart from the setting/atmosphere) :)

But MY GOD Sonam Kapoor :110: I swear, there should be a limit on wanna-bes like her starring in movies. She was atrocious. As was her wardrobe (wore a freakin denim American flag lungi! )

Both the moms played well. Kirron Khel was wonderful! As a typical, Disney-endorsed rom-com, the story was awfully predictable. But the conflicting inner monologues were nice, a little different.

I dont want to rate it. I just watched it to see how our boy fared - he did very well indeed :22:

:))) >> yes Saif Ali Khan and Rani Mukherjee.. It aint that bad tbh and plus there was nothing else on tv

Hardly a minute goes by in which Rani Mukherjee keeps quiet. She talks so much in films. Her name should have been Rani Chatterjee, which actually is an Indian surname.

Oh´ and, Kajol is another such actress.

I think Priyanka is one good actress. and Kareena now not the old one

How To Train Your Dragon

Absolutely fantastic!! Just saw it and I cant stop smiling. Anyone who holds the misguided view that animated films are only for kids needs to see this (I'm looking at you ChaudrySaab :mv ) Its a fantastic film on every level, story, animation, voice acting soundtrack everything. It has none of the crappy humour you'd expect to see in some animated films but its got so much heart.

Enjoyed every second of it and had a smile on my face throughout. Would definitely recommend if you have time to kill or just want to watch a film and feel good afterwards. The ending has a twist that I wont spoil but my word it was excellent and what made it even better was how unexpected it was, while at the same time it adds to why you love the dragons so damn much.

10/10.

Man I cant stop smiling :) Thank you endymion248 for the recommendation :19:

Going to watch it, Donal Cozzie. :D

LOOK AT THE POSTER!!

Paranormal Activity on Steroids. Sure the characters keep holding the camera even when they are being attacked and there are too many jump scares but the movie is scary and expertly constructed. The actor playing the exorcist was just amazing.

He performed a lot in our school some 10-12 years back with EP. Was still pretty cute back then, but as a 9/10 year old, I was a little aloof to the concept of crushes at that time.

His performance in Dastaan though was spine-chilling!! :O

American History X

Watched it again after a few years. What a great movie. One of the most intense I have ever seen and great commentary on race relations in the US.

I would put it up there with among the best I have ever seen. Only downside would be there's literally no humor which I feel should be there in small doses even in the most serious films.

9.5/10

Anyone know the name of a classic indian film director whose name ressembles satyrajee or sakiyajaree (or something like that)?

blinding light : From what I have seen, FK, while handsome, is a terrible actor. Still better than the immense majority of Bollywood actors so he shouldn't have any problem to make himself a name in India.

leatherface58 : Have you seen the semi-horror movie ''Coherence''? Thoughts?

Tbf, the pakistani drama industry is a cesspool of nepotism and cronyism. He may be one of the best actors in the circuit but that wouldn't make him a good actor per se. As for my opinion, it's based on Khuda ke Liye.

Not as good as Paranormal Activity 1 but it's better than all it's sequels. There are scenes where you expect a huge bang but nothing happens. On the other hand, some scenes are scary when you least expect it. The scares start from the first minute. No build-up crap. The ending is stupid but it has done enough good by then. Gotta check out the sequel Dabbe Cin Carpmasi.

The director is even coming up with an English feature this year or the next. I hope they give him the money rather than some hacks who are living it up in Hollyweird.

Good to see you actually rate Para 1. A lot of people hate on it cuz the sequels were so bad and because it got so popular. But it was genuinely a frightening movie.

It's the 2nd best mockumentary horror film I have seen. 1st is Rec. I would consider it good enough to be in my top 10 horror films. The concept itself is scary. Your house is the most secure place on earth. What if that house itself is haunted and wherever you go, that entity will follow you. You can't fight it or repel it. All you will do is be tormented and ultimately kill yourself or be killed. Horror in it's purest form.

Sure the male lead was an idiot and kept provoking the demon but they were doomed from the start.

I think that THE LAST FIVE MINUTES OF Blair Witch Project is still the zenith of the mockumentary genre.

Fixed and we got a case here Endy. The first 65 minutes is just three annoying characters cussing and getting lost interspersed with some legit scares.

BWP is a highly influential horror film not just in concept but also in viral marketing which I feel is unrivalled to date. But I just don't find it scary enough though I admire it's craft.

And Cannibal Holocaust is the first mockumentary horror film ever from all accounts.

It was truly creepy though. And I know what you mean about the viral marketing. They had a documentary run before the release of the film which made everyone believe it was a real life incident. The last scene is absolutely amazing.

Agreed. It was a typical plot. The execution was so different that it stood out.

Rec and Rec2 are easily the best found footage horror flicks.

The first 65 minutes build the tension up pretty nicely. The characters may not be that interesting (which seems to be a stamp of the genre) but their conflicts were nice to follow. You can feel the dread about nightfall and, at one point, you see that the characters are back to where they were a few days ago, that is when you realize the scale of the surnatural and, above all, that they are truly lost (while one may have had hope for them before). I think that this was very well done, creepy without relying on scare jumps like PA.
Many horror movies fail to take into account anticipation and psychological dread, going for the easy solution of quick scares. For example, in Grave Encounters, most of the movie was pretty nice until they actually showed the ghosts and gave them a physical zombie-like presence. That is when it began to be really bad. The end came back to the basic and it was again masterful. Another example is the claustophrobic atmosphere of the Descent. When you first see the monsters in the camera, that's a real horror movie classic. Then, progressively, it starts to fiddle out. I think that this is both the Ring movies did very well. In the Ring 2, you have a scene where the boy is looking into the mirror and you progressively see Samanta behind him. Another movie doing this very well is the Strangers because, in many scenes, they tend not to focus the camera on the threat. This, again, works much better than dramatic sounds and short cuts between scenes in movies like PA, the Grudge, the last Exorcist,... I think that BWP was the only movie in the found footage genre to do this well enough and, hence, is still the best of the genre.

What was the last Pakistani drama you saw in its entirety, hmm? :13:

Not going to argue about nepotism and cronyism in the admin, I don't rule that out. But the quality of Pak dramas has improved immensely.

One very underrated drama was Mera Saeen (part 1). Aw man. That was sheer brilliance.

I consider myself relatively knowledgable on the subject.

This is due to the fact that my mother and cousins all watched pakistani dramas, would discuss them and, sitting in the living room during evening time, they would be playing in the background. My conclusion is that pakistani dramas have unmatched directing in the region and, for geo dramas, the production values are awesome. In terms of acting, there is definitely nepotism going on imo. Especially for the teenagers and the women. This may due to the fact that acting is not considered an honorable job and, as such, they tend to come from the same small pool of people. Male actors are evidently better than their counterparts both in terms of skills and looks. I still maintain that FK is a guy with a good personality and poor acting skills but, since I have only watched Khuda ke Liye (supposedly his worst), I may be wrong.

Writing is the weak spot of these dramas and, even for the ones I like, it is difficult to watch them in entierity without rolling your eyes. In particular, characters are not multi-dimensional. You always have Mary Sue type educated outside perspectives as heros (male or female, but mostly female because the writers and target audience are). Same with the more negative characters. You mention Mera Saeen which is a perfect example of this. As an anti-hero drama, it could have worked very well, especially with Nauma Ijjaz very good performance (one of my favourite pakistani actors). But, in the end, it was just led down in how insipid the wife's character was (as well as the poor acting by that girl). Another one I really like that suffered from this was Tum ho Kay Chup. I think it would have been more tragic and, at the same time, nuanced, if, at the end, the kid fell back to his father's ways like the father did before him despite being foreign-educated. Still, I really like that one.

As for the dramas that I have watched in their entirety (and liked), there is Khuda ki basti, a masterpiece. There are a few short stories serials (one by Ashfaq Ahmad, one with a yellow theme and song by RFAK and Zindagi udas hay tu). There is a PTV drama that happened in Gwadar. And a drama where main character is named rani and the actress was named angeline I think. Surprisingly little, now that I think about it.

Edit: Another one I thought looked nice but didn't watched completely was Shehr-e-zaat.

A very good, twisted time travel film from a highly promising director, Nacho Vigalondo who also made the short 'A for Apocalypse' from ABCs of death. A story which could have been unnecessarily complex is quite fun and still not dumbed down. Has a truly dumb protagonist though. Will be subjected to an American remake. Heaven help us!

The movie is ok just a bit disappointed by the hodge podge ending Tariq n gulrez make a good couple

The Green Mile

Watched it again a few days back after a long time and it was still the same great cinematic experience watching it. Perhaps the only movie out there which did justice of bringing supernatural element successfully in a drama genre based on normal life. Every cast member did a brilliant job with their role. Although Tom Hanks was as great as he always has been, but imho he was overshadowed each time Duncan appeared in a scene!

The Green Mile is hands down my favourite movie of all time. Nothing, I mean nothing comes close to the sad scene in Munna's gif.

8/10

People hating on this and liking the first makes zero sense cause they are both thematically identical. The 2nd is a little weak on the story side but makes up for it with some great style, action and fantastic performances by Mickey Rourke, Eva Green, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Powers Boothe. Don't know why this bombed so badly but it is a highly watchable flick if a little diluted since the first Sin City was quite pathbreaking.

Sucker for old movies, amazing to see how quick Jackie was in his prime as well.

The Equaliser. Good fun. Denzel is basically Batman without a mask. Some crazy fight and death scenes in here.

Also, I saw the trailer for Annabelle. Holy shiiiiiiiiiiii this will be good.

There were a lot of "oooooo dammmmmnnnn" moments in this movie. Thoroughly enjoyed it, as long as one suspends their belief for 2 hours.

I thought they could have trimmed down a few parts and get right to the action scenes. The ending made denzel look like the Rambo of home Depot. Lol

That scene where Ice Cube is just bewilderingly staring at Jonah after realizing he is dating his daugher. He is like huh? I totally lost it during that scene.

Plus, these two were gayer than some of the gay couples out there. Seriously I thought they would start making out suddenly.

It was gayer than Hot Fuzz where Pegg and Frost exchanged flowers lol.

What? That woman used to be my fav pakistani actress. Didn't know she made a movie. Is it out in DVD yet? What is it about?

Land Gold Women

Set in modern Birmingham, "Land Gold Women" revolves around a small British Asian family caught between their traditional past and the tumultuous, faction-driven present. Nazir Ali Khan, a soft-spoken, 45-year-old professor of History at a University in Birmingham, emigrated from India in the 1980's. He made Birmingham his home with his conservative wife Rizwana and their two children, Saira, 17 and Asif, 14. He indulges their interests in all things English and Western but now finds himself increasingly nostalgic about his roots. Saira, with a year to complete her graduation, is excited at the prospect of going to university to pursue her interest in Literature. She also hopes that this will give her more time to spend with David, her aspiring writer boyfriend. At this critical juncture in her life, Nazir finds himself feeling increasingly conflicted at the thought of his daughter going out into the big bad world. His fears are further strengthened by the arrival of his older brother Riyaaz from India. A staunch traditional man, Riyaaz arrives with a proposal of marriage for Saira. A man of his word, who takes great pride in his roots, Riyaaz doesn't intend on taking a 'no' for an answer. With the threat of an illicit relationship looming over his head and the prospect of getting cut off from the rest of his family, Nazir finds himself at the brink of a terrible decision to make: Should he save face? Or save his daughter?

One Hour Photo - Great psychological thriller film starring the late Robin Williams. The guy was simply a great actor.
