Avatar, I did try and watch it but, had trouble staying awake (too boring) and the novelty of 3D glasses wore off too quickly...I managed to last 45 minutes until I decided that I would rather watch paint dry and then crack then to watch another minute of Avatar...

Yes, patience is a necessity for some hollywood movies

A couple of Korean gems.

The Chaser - One of the best serial killer/thriller i've seen in a long long time.

Brotherhood of War - At least as good as Saving Private Ryan, this movie had everything. Brutality of war, honour, betrayal, raw emotion and tension.

Both HIGHLY recommended.

Korean movies? Its not worth watching a movie if you cant understand the language and have to rely on subtitles

wrong...

some of the best movies ive ever seen have been in foreign language and had to rely on subtitles...

Der Untergang- German

Das Boot- German

Amelie- French

City of God- Brazilian

to name a few

Why is that?

I personally thought Apocalypto was a top movie but it was subtitled yet no one batted an eye lid because it was a Hollywood production.

Believe me, there are many movies outside of Hollywood which are better than most over hyped Hollywood movies.

I really recommend these movies to any movie fan.

Same here. Italian, French, Chinese - there are gems everywhere.

I just recently saw an old-ish Italian movie, "Il Postino" (The Postman), based partially on the real life events of Pablo Neruda, the Chilean poet and communist. Great movie.

One of the more interesting and involved footiee movies I have ever seen was a Brazilian one too - "O Casamento de Romeu e Julieta" (The Marriage of Romeo and Juliet) was in Portugese with sub-titles, basically about the Corinthians and Palmeiras rivalry in São Paulo.

Defo people should watch some foreign films especially the ones from the far east

South korea have some brilliant films in the last decade definetly recommend their cinema

I don't watch foreign movies much because of subtitles but the last one I watched was "Letters from Iwo Jima" and that was American movie but subtitles. Great movie and I even bought it. For me it depends on the time of day and how I am I feeling - am I wide awake and can see the screen for next one hour or did the first 10-15 minutes of movie get my attention. But same applies for English movies but it is harder for subtitled movies as you walk away but what you hear is something you cannot understand.

How to Lose Friends and Alienate People

Simon Pegg with Megan Fox and Kirsten Dunst all star in a movie that was supposed to be a 'comedy. Don't waste 2 hours of your life like I did watching this, stay well away...

LBB, what do you like? :P

I like movies that involve that one vital ingredient.....A STORYLINE or PLOT

Or a good action movie e.g. Face Off, Con Air, The Rock, Die Hard 1,2,3 are movies you can watch a million times and not get bored of them

You follow my mantra for a successful movie, you will not go wrong, I assure you that fella..

Another one to add to the list:

The Usual Suspects

If you have seen it, watch it again, if you have not seen it, make sure you watch it two times to actually understand what actually happens in the movie.

Again, another movie with a great storyline, fantastically portrayed by the actors and a mind-blowing twist at the end...

Most of the film was good BUT the ending was garbage - spoiled the film.

Haha in which case I do NOT recommend that you watch Blood Simple, the Coen Brothers' first film. Also set in Texas, and the style and cinematography are quite similar.

The ''ending'' was what made the film

SPOILER ALERT

in life generally there are no heroes, the bad guys do many times get away and all this good or bad ending to films is rubbish as in life the end only happens with death which is many times unexpected

SPOILER ALERT!!

^^The only issue with the ending I had was that I couldn't understand a single darn word coming out of Tommy Lee Jones' mouth! The Texan drawl, and maybe the sound in the cinema was off a little, but it all ends with a monologue and I couldn't tell what happened. Had to go and read the script afterwards.

True, i had to wtach it again with subtitles

Javier bardem played the villain brilliantly, id go as far as saying hes the most frightening character ever

Also contains one of the most thrilling scene ever

Green Zone

Was pretty decent, I enjoyed it a lot more than the critics it seems - not getting the high ratings I thought it would.

I actually thought that the first half of it was a masterpiece. The 2nd half was quite disappointing though, still a very good film.

Definitely must see. I highly recommend two more Korean movies if you have not seen:
Memories of Murder (one of the best serial killer movies)
Oldboy (part of the The Vengeance Trilogy)

abdul2009 said:

I disagree. If you are a movie buff, then some of the best movies out there are in languages other than English. Don't let the language barrier deter you.

Will definitely check out Memories of Murder and The Chaser.

Old Boy was awesome - except for the twisted ending (only because it was so disturbing). The scene in the hallway with the axe was brilliant.

I bet you liked A Serious Man then? (this film was rubbish overall, not just the ending)

Zaz said:

I dont care much for the happy endings BUT this was just nonsense

Tommy Lee Jones was just chatting rubbish and people then lap it up saying "wow, that was cool - the ending was unique" - well yeah it was unique BUT i could also have made a unique ending, doesnt make it any good

I could have wrote the last quotes (you know random mumbo jumbo) and bet people would have thought it was amazing, even though i just plucked the words from the air

I actually walked out of No Country for Old Men.

The first half was intriguing.

As soon as the second half started (with the crime scene) - me and my matest just walked out.

So I have no idea what Tommy Lee said near the end. Looks like I may have missed quite a controversial ending.

Who knows. Who cares. The movie didn't deserve all the accolades it got.

^^The ending stays true to the book and the monologue is pretty much taken from the book word-for-word. That's just how the story ends. And well, understanding what Tommy Lee Jones is saying is central to understanding the movie, which was why I struggled with it after I saw it at the cinema. But anyway, if you didn't like it, well, too bad.

Also, A Serious Man is a retelling of the Biblical story of Job (Hazrat Ayub AS). Not the first time the Coen Brothers have done this i.e retell a well known historic tale. O Brother Where Art Thou, which was set in Depression-era US, was their take on Homer and the Odyssey. Their style is definitely quirky, which doesn't work for everybody.

Edit: meant to reply to GA.

Precisely! Very well said :)

It was a well-made decent movie, but the end was a let-down.

It wasn't dramatic, it wasn't classy, and it wasn't even coherent. Now compare that with the ending of The Departed! Lightyears ahead...

Plenty of other movies have poetic endings, I have nothing against that, and in fact I prefer dramatic or non-typical endings. All this goes all the way to Victorians (as with most things in our lives) - Dickens' Great Expectations had an original, very sad, open-ended sort of ending, one which left countless possibilities, resolved nothing and was very realistic - absolutely brilliant! However, there was a furore, so it subsequently got changed to a silly, mushy, 'happy' ending, which is just fake.

Hence, the point of that literature bhashan is that I have nothing against 'open-endings' and I don't generally go for 'mushy' endings to 'proper' films. For instance, certainly most of Tarantino's films have poetic and non-typical endings, and are great for it. So are most of Scorcese's! Why are they good? Because they are coherent and well-made.. unlike "No Country's" ending, which is something that a high-schooler with a cam-corder and a crappy script would come up with :)

Watch Gladiator, that is one great movie, along with Dark Knight...of course that is only to be watched for the late Heath Ledger...

As for movies of the 90s, The Sixth Sense, is another creepy movie and with a top-class ending...and these other films are fantastic as well:

- Saving Private Ryan
- The Terminal
- Catch me if you can....defintely worth a download
- True Lies
- Seven

I always liked Troy more than Gladiator really, as for that list you posted, pretty solid, except for True Lies.

one movie I would recommend for everyone is Atonement, absolutely stunning film.

True Lies and Terminator 2 are two fantastic Arnie movies....

Atonement, was on Sky recently, it is the one with Keira Knightely isnt it?

^^ I agree about Atonement.

Brilliant.

A 'modern-day' version of Evelyn Waugh's Brideshead Revisted - and that's very high praise indeed!

what suspense man, halfway through the movie you find out that Bale's "engineer" looks exactly like him!

^Black comedy, like a lot of their films.

(Yes, in case you haven't noticed already, I'm a big fan of the Coen Brothers :D)

I am not their fan. I like Raising Arizona, Fargo, No Country for old Man.
Didn't like "Brother where art thou" (or whatever and I didn't even know it was their's and thought it was Clooney and Sodenbr...?? the Ocean 11 or maybe Syriana team) movie. Watched half of it because I bought it and it was on while I was laying down or doing other things.

I think these are the only movies of their that I have seen and I probably saw them without knowing they made it.

big lebowski is a must

Is that the "dude" movie? I saw it but can't remember except Jeff Bridges and Dude (if it is the same movie). I didn't know it was their's. I can't comment if I liked it or not as I can hardly remember (it is not just this movie but quite a few where I have to see again to remember) and I think it was entertaining

Yeah you should definitely see The Big Lebowski. That's the first movie of theirs that I watched and it's probably my favorite movie of all time. So much so that it's hard for me to now watch Jeff Bridges in other movies because I can't get past his portrayal of The Dude.

Since then I've pretty much seen everything they've done. Except for The Hudsucker Proxy and Intolerable Cruelty. While I won't say they're all excellent movies, they definitely have a unique style.

-The Professional
-Dead Man Walking

Hoop Dreams - a documentary if you like them about 3 highschool basketball players made over 3-4 years following them as they go from school to college.

Strangely enough I didn't like the way The Departed ended *at all* even though it was very coherent and I had no trouble understanding anything.

Shutter Island

Good movie. Slow but a good ending.

It isn't a classic but it's worth the watch.

alice in wonderland. Please dont ask why!

Ended up with me and my friends having a skittle fight at the back of the screening, i got a beautiful headshot i must say! Very boring

Must admit, Steve has great comic timing and it is a funny movie. The Rock is the bad guy and the movie was a like mix of James Bond meets Mr Bean meets Austin Powers...

Well worth a watcch...

Watched Love Sex aur Dhoka by the talented director Dibakar Baneerjee(Khosla ka Ghosla,Oye Lucky).
Have to say...it was different and very realistic...
all the actors were new bies..
Liked it..
