The Double - It's the atmosphere that makes this movie. There is something gripping and uncomfortable about the smoggy visuals and the surrealist sound-track. Coupled with the claustrophobic environment and Jesse Eisenberg's top notch acting, it really gives a new dimension to the rather conventional story. Won't leave you indifferent. Recommended.

The start reminded me of the Coen bothers The Hudsucker Proxy with its portrayal of an ordinary office worker almost invisible to everyone around him. Eisenberg's brilliant performances saves the movie from becoming overly intellectual and restricting itself to philosophical rumination on identity and existentialism. The ease with which he can tackle opposing characters is truly remarkable, likely his best role after Social Network. Charlie Kaufman's Adaptation in which Nic Cage played a similar double role of a brilliant yet neurotic loser and his extroverted and gregarious brother is worth mentioning here as well.

I have heard you either love it or hate it.

'D-Day' (2013)

Not a film for Pakistanis, but it was okay for me treating it as a work of fiction.

They stretched it a bit after the operation failed at the first attempt. Instead of showing that they give it another go and succeed in it, I would have instead shown that the operation fails and the RAW agents get killed in Pakistan, being also disowned by the Indian authorities. Now that would have made it a perfect tragedy with them running around for their lives and being killed one by one, brutally. What we have instead is an extremely lame ending because the (Indian) director couldn´t go past the blind-fold of patriotism to show that consisting of humans after all, India could also fail in an operation conducted by its intelligence agency.

Irrfan Khan is one great actor!

I will give it six out of 10.

7.5/10

An anorexic girl teams up with a guy who saves her from suicide to find out who really killed her parents and a host of other people.

A somewhat restrained but still stylish film from the master Dario Argento. Supremely underrated on Imdb. The kills are very original and disturbing. Asia Argento (Dario's daughter) gives a very good performance making a character likeable who could have been easily despicable. A highly underrated performance from Christopher Rydell as the hero of the piece. Then there is Piper Laurie(Carrie and Twin Peaks) who has a short role but makes a great impact. Even Brad "Voice of Chucky" Dourif shows up.

6.0 is too low for this movie. Terrific entertainment.

Saw 'The Enemy' yesterday...

Very good Serbian anti war film...one aspect that makes it interesting is two people can watch it and have a different understanding of what happened...ie one can see some allegorical meaning or someone could see it as a paranormal film...

Also, Enemy.

Haven't seen that. Was thinking about the movie and actually Fight Club is similar in terms of the double identity motif and extreme opposite manifestation of characters of the same person. The amplified background sound in both movies also bears resemblance.

Apt description. The film is definitely bigger than the sum of its parts.

I liked him in Adventureland too although that film gave me the weirdest crush on Kristen Stewart. I think it was the blonde hair and the bracelets.

You should definitely check it out. And then report to the separate thread I made about it.

Derrickson is a very good horror director but the police procedural keeps getting in the way. Bana's NY accent mysteriously gets an Ozzie twang from time to time. Joel McHale adds some levity thankfully. But it's Edgar Ramirez as the Jesuit Priest with a few demons of his own who raises the movie to a respectable level. The climactic exorcism scene is simply fantastic.

Not as good as Sinister but a watchable horror movie.

'Sonali Cable' (2014)

Wasn´t that bad considering that I watched it with zero expectations. The short length was of course a great positive. An okay-ish film I would say if one has absolutely nothing else to do.

I will add that to my list :)

I liked sinister, it was well made movie. Usually Horror is the most difficult genre to make , because we already know that there has to be some spirit or demon or supernatural entity involved. Something related to some past incident there.

How do you do it ?

Come, visit me here and you will be awestruck by the nothing-else-to-do-ness of my life. You will ask for an autograph, I humbly claim.

A film a day keeps the doctor away.

I thought Deliver Us From Evil was a let down to be honest. It started off quite good but the pacing was quite pedestrian and the story fails to hold any attention. In the end it just transcends into a Pro Catholic farce, perhaps it was meant to BUT by then I really lost all interest by then and couldn't wait for it to finish. The acting was ordinary too, seemed unsuited to the roles and just delivered the usual cliched dialogues.

LelleBelle 5/10

A musical and erotic film not bad not great though keeping with subtitles was a bit difficult

Felt similar. Wasn't really the pure horror movie I was expecting. The final exorcism scene was Ok though but perhaps too cliche.

'Bachna Ae Haseeno' (2008)

Remember watching this one back then itself and quite enjoyed it, so made up my mind to go through it again. Quite entertaining and enjoyable, surely meant for a person like me. A good film.

I think I might have mentioned somewhere on the forum earlier as well how Ranbir Kapoor´s voice, and in some cases, his dialogue delivery is so similar to that of Sanjay Dutt.

Annabelle.

A good movie all in all, there should have been more horror scenes in it though.

Both my brothers-in-law complained the same, and you three are right given there was not a single "Wow" moment even whilst watching it on the big screen from the first row. However, given the kind of person I am, I felt content with whatever horror scenes that it contained. Still though, I have to keep an eye on the upcoming (horror) films for my younger sister´s husband who strolled out of the cinema hall quite dissatisfied.

A fascinating read about the doll, Annabelle:

Wow!

Interstellar.

Another masterpiece by Nolan. Everything from the cinematography to character development beats Gravity hands down.

9.5/10.

No way does it beat Gravity in terms of FX. Overall s superb movie. You feel for the characters. Brilliantly acted. And that killer soundtrack by Zimmer (though too loud).

I did read that, it's quite hard for me to believe.

Nonetheless I screamed unconsciously on 3-4 scenes also my chickenhearted friend was sitting next to me so her cowardliness added fuel to the fire. :P

Anabelle was 6/10 material, definitely not as good as Conjuring which was 8/10 for me.

The expectations were way to high, given the way they themselves hyped up Anabelle's story. They simply failed to deliver what they promised. The only terrifying scene was the lift scene.

Hmm same film, two polar opposite reviews.

I fail to understand how it could be a colossal waste of time. Even if you're an over analytic noob, this is a certain safe bet for a one time watch. If you can't watch this, you're probably someone who watched 1 movie in 2-3 years.

Above the Law (1988) 5/10

NOt a great film the story and action was vey lame add to it the B'wood style Hero look

It was always going to be tough to match Conjuring.

'Nayee Padosan' (2003)

Had no expectations but watched it hoping to get a few funny scenes here and there, but sadly I can´t recall too many of those except one scene I think. Quite a bad film actually.

------------

'Ladies vs. Ricky Bahl' (2011)

This one though very highly entertaining. It was great except for such a lame ending, otherwise I would have given it 10 out of 10. Bollywood really needs to develop and move on from the concept of "Happy ending" because it is quite capable of ruining films. Ranveer Singh is excellent. I really like him.

One thing I have noticed about a lot of girls, which also includes Anushka Sharma, is that if they happen to have told by someone, or if they themselves believe that they have got good looking teeth, they will put extra effort into talking but with bit of an open mouth, you know, to make the teeth as visible as possible.

Anyway, back to the film, I will give it seven out of 10.

Watched Happy New year.

Absolute garbage.

I know the likes of Shah Rukh Khan will get paid a lot of money for such films but this film really was awful.

One to miss in my opinion 1/10.

Interstellar on Friday. You have to suspend belief a bit, but it is an epic. Just couldn't stop watching.

Interstellar

A film that I've been looking forward too and deliberately avoided trailers to ensure a full experience.

Outstanding. An absolute triumph IMO. This is the film "Gravity" wishes it was. It contains the same fantastic effects and views Gravity did, but this film actually contains a plot.

The basic premise for those who dont know (no spoilers) is that Earths atmosphere is turning more and more hostile and the population of the planet has decreased to about 100 million or so IIRC, All crops have failed, bar corn, which continues to grow but is all humans rely on. Basically, Cooper and Co. must head out through a wormhole near Saturn and find a new home for humanity.

Everything about this film oozes class. The views and cinematography on show are absolutely astounding, top notch stuff. It even surpasses "Life of Pi" IMO, and you will regularly find yourself in disbelief at the beauty and scale of dozens of shots throughout the film. The environments are all varied and beautiful and the film would still be worth seeing even if there was no volume, the views are that good.

The acting is excellent too, with McConaughey continuing to amaze. He is one of my favourite actors of now and his career turn is unbelievable. Could well get another Oscar nomination. The supporting cast do their jobs too, with none of them failing to contribute. Special mention goes to the child actor as well, who handles some tough scenes very well.

The plot is very good, and some scenes will get you emotional. You can never predict whats happening next and the characters all have sufficient backstory with different, and understandable, viewpoints. This makes the plot and the set pieces have actual meaning and tension, unlike other films where you couldnt care less about what happens to the characters. The ending can melt your mind a little bit, but on reflection I found it all to make enough sense and left me satisfied.

Its a film that gets you really thinking as well. You'll be thinking about the film and humanity's future, potential and futility in the grand scheme of space in general. I watched this film at 8 30 tonight, and on walking home at 11 or so I couldnt help but gaze at the stars and wonder about the sheer volume of things out there, and how little we've really seen.

The score by Hans Zimmer comes in for praise as well, picking up at just the right moments and hitting exactly the right tones. Its superbly done and added to the tenser and action scenes dramatically.

Some people will not like it, and one thing I must say is the female lead scientist makes some decisions that would make the Prometheus crowd blush, but on the whole this is a film not just worth watching, but a film worth experiencing as well. It could well change how you view life in general, even if for just a brief while.

If you love space, great directing and cinematography, exploration or, like me, you just love Matthew McConaughey then you have to see this. If you hated "Gravity" for its lack of plot this film is made for you in my honest opinion. An all round excellent film that has actual meaning and an affect on you, something which is far too rare these days

8.5/10

Apologies for the length, but this film warrants more than a line or paragraph IMO

Killers 2014

A violent movie on violence...Japanese/Indo collaboration...if you like serial killer flicks you'll like this one...and if you like gore you'll like this too...but its not a brainless film...quite well written with some interesting social commentary...worth a watch...

Wish I could watch it. but get nervous watching space movies. the last time i gathered courage to watch a space movie, gravity, in a theatre, it didn't go well. i had to remove my 3d glasses and wait for a scene where they would not show the scary space. which finally happened in the last minute.

Watched 2 this week:

The Babadook - 6/10
Had high expectations going in but just did not live up to it. The lady (main lead) was very good, just not enough scares

Secret Life of Walter Mitty - 9/10
Love these self exploring movies, definitely along the lines of "Darjeeling Limited" and "Little miss sunshine". Ben Stiller was in a completely different role but made it believable, cinematography, music are just beautiful. The story may have flaws but the soul and the essence of the message is definitely delivered

John Wick 3.5/10

Don't fall for the hype. Gutted that we wasted money on this instead of Interstellar. Thought it would be a decent action flick but the story line is waaaayyyyy ott and unless you are a ardent animal lover or absolutely hate Russians don't waste your time.

p.s Really hoping Dumb and Dumber 2 lives up to the hype. Will definitely catch that next week.

Has no one seriously watched Big Hero 6 yet? Baymaaaaxx

I'm making plans with a friend on seeing it this week/emd. Not too big in on sci-fi, tbh, but might try Interstellar. I just need a few laughs at this time of the year (academic crunch time and all).

I loved it. You felt the character emotions- the acting was exceptional. A film that contains family values. As a parent, I felt the father and daughter pain. Having said that, there was not enough of the son. Oh and that soundtrack by Hans Zimmer...killer. I feel this movie is underrated and Inception is overrated.

I also thought Gravity was exceptional. As far as FX are concerned, it trumps Interstellar (which was no doubt eye candy too). Both are top notch productions in their own right.

This is still reverberating in my ears.

Conjuring 5/10

so highly overrated, everyone recommended me to watch it as the most scary movie ever. I will be honest I was not scared for a moment nor my wife may be for few scenes she was stunned but overall disappointing.

'Lootera' (2013)

And with that, I am done with all of Ranveer Singh´s films! Mind you, the weather in the film really, really made me feel as if it was the first typical day of winter here in Germany - very greyish/whitish sort of. A very quiet film as well which may well make a few people feel bored half way into it.

Anyway, the basics of the second half of the film were almost the same as Aamir Khan´s 'Fanaa' (2006), but differed in parts here and there due to which it will be rather unfair to label it as plagiarism or anything.

So, all in all, quite a good film. Very good in fact I would say. As usual, Ranveer was excellent in this one, too. Mind you, life is funny at times in terms of how our opinions change. When I watched this guy´s debut film I not only disliked the film but in fact tore him apart in my review from what I remember, calling his voice to be similar to that of Sheikh Rasheed:)).

7.5 out of 10 for me.

Horror is tough genre to make , this was not that bad movie.

Not that scary , but still manages to hold interest.

The Shaukeens 6/10

story of 3 old friends who still crave for young girls and desparate to find someone......some of the scenes were funny thankfully there was not much skin show as expected by the plot.

Grand Piano

Moments before his comeback performance, a concert pianist who suffers from stage fright discovers a note written on his music sheet.

Good suspense. The script manages to hold interest throughout.
Very compact screenplay , not many slow moments.

Elijah Wood is good in this one.

7 / 10

This is the movie they have warned you not so see. Extremely gory, featuring actual animal killings (2 monkeys were killed due to a ruined take!!!) and an unpolished nature making it even more disturbing much like the original Texas Chain Saw Massacre.

Despite the inexcusable animal murders, the movie is competently assembled with some great jungle photography and a valid message of how savage humans can be regardless of whether they come from urban or rural location, albeit one delivered hamfistedly.

Ultimately, NOT a fun movie and I would rather not watch it again but I can't deny the movie does have it's virtues.

6/10

i always like shah rukh khan's movies and i was expecting alot from him and farah movie, but i was dissapointed when i watched the movie. eventhough most bollywood movies are meaningless these but some are entertaining. 1 would be for overall movie including star cast. even i think the casting for the roles were not well done.

Blue Is The Warmest Colour

I thought I'd give it a watch on Netflix as it is highly rated.

A Erotic French drama. Adele's life is changed when she meets Emma, a blue haired woman which allows her to search her desires and assert herself as a woman and a adult.

Wow. The acting in this is something else- throughly believable. The emotions are real. The lead actress is simply sensational. Every expression on her face is believable. At 3hrs long, the film contains graphic s** scenes..one lasting 15mins!

Full of powerful, raw emotions, the movie will pull you in. You feel the lead actress' emotions. Defo worth a watch.

Liked the movie. never once did i feel anything for the victims, because they brought it upon themselves. watching the movie was like seeing your fantasy come alive.

'Interstellar' (2014)

Wow, what stunning film! I am awestruck! Great scenes, emotions so perfectly depicted. I haven't watched too many better than this one.

As for its long length, well I don't think there were too many scenes that they could have done without. Every little thing was so exciting.

The strange thing here may be that it was pretty much a last minute plan to go for this one as I had originally planned to watch 'Equalizer' (2014) yesterday which wasn't to be due to the show`s timing. So I decided to watch this one reading the positive reviews here on the forum as well as other websites. Watching this one is an experience that I will never forget.

"I have waited 23 yesrs for you" was one of the best scenes of it. It gave me really a feel of what they were doing, and then how he cries seeing the video messages from his family. All so emotional and touching. Great, great! The background music was awesome, out of this world!

A classic romantic tragedy gripping story and screen-play, you get the feeling of characters and through the film empathize with both of the leading pair. A must watch for those who like the "romance" genre.

Totally agree.

Whats it about?? Might be interested in this one actually

its about these 2 smart brothers who make cool things. The elder brother takes his younger brother, hero (his name), to his college because hero isnt interested in college. Thou he is smart as heck, he graduated school at the age of 13. At his brother's school he finds this "health assistant" (the big balloon robot). I rather not tell you further and let you see it on your own.

Even if you dont like animated movies, you'll love this one for sure! Def. recommend it!

Interstellar. Wow. What an ambitious movie.

Could have done with some more editing to make it around half an hour shorter in length but overall pretty good. Not his best work but definitely one of the more ambitious projects out there.

A million ways to die in the west- The story revolves around a guy whose girlfriend dumps him for being a wimp. A funny movie where people keep dying in the most horrible ways. But thankfully, the deaths are funny, so you don't feel bad abt it. :D 7/10

Thanks for that.

Possibly because I never got around to study about it much even during my days as student, space, planets etc. have always fascinated me a great deal. I often Google some of the stuff even though the terminology used has always been a challenge to understand for me.

So yeah, you could argue that this was a film made for me.

Interstellar counts as one of the best films I've seen in several years!

Happy new year - 2/10 - Garbage and waste of time. Few funny scenes but overall its pure garbage
Bang Bang - 1/10 - Not worth watching. Stupid and predictable plot
Monster University - 9/10 - Loved it
HTTYD 2 - 7/10 -Decent movie

Annabelle was poor. Felt like i was watching another insidious movie.

The Conjuring was directed very similar to insidious too and without actually knowing it was the same director going in it didnt take me long to realise.

David Wan needs to learn how to disconnect his projects from each other. ( I know he didnt direct Annabelle but was still involved in it majorly and it is noticeable)
