The visit

7/10

A brilliant first hour followed by a spectacular twist is marred a touch by an underwhelming final half hour.

I saw signs (pun unintended) of the M Night of The Sixth Sense and Unbreakable rather than After Earth and The Happening.

Good to see him concentrate on story and filmmaking rather than style and the twist which is shocking but effectively downplayed so as to not call attention to itself.
Please no

Had to watch it yesterday because little brother insisted and it was horrible. Is it meant to be horror? Was barely scared at all and I get scared easily watching horror movies.

Don't recommend the movie at all.

Sorry you didn't like it but your reaction is exactly similar to how people react to horror comedies and this was a pretty good horror comedy. The Cabin in the Woods had a pretty similar reception from most fans.

Besides, horror is a very subjective genre even more than comedy. What may scare you may not scare me and vice versa.

Loved it. Im not sure why some ppl hated it. A low budget movie which is essentially a dark comedy.

It wasn' even funny! If the rap parts were supposed to be funny than wow lol

Paranornal Activity: The Marked Ones. 7/10

Ties in nicely with the rest of series...enjoyed it. Im looking for to the next entry in the series.

Fool Proof

Twenty-something Torontonians and friends Kevin, Sam and Rob play a game they call Foolproof: they plan foolproof heists, but without the intention of actually carrying them out. They have a few rules in the game, including the three having the necessary technical and physical abilities to carry out the tasks required for the heist, the plan cannot include loaded guns, and there is no violence meaning that no one gets hurt. They try to be as meticulous if not more so than the best high stakes thieves. The fun is in knowing they could do it if they truly wanted. Their collective lives change when someone breaks into Sam's apartment and steals their latest plan for a jewelry warehouse heist. After the warehouse is hit, the culprit identifies himself to them as Leo 'The Touch' Gillette, a known but never convicted high stakes thief who will stop at nothing to get what he wants. He tells them that the break-in at Sam's apartment was not by accident, and that part of his grand plan is to .......

The ending is excellent .

The good, the bad and the ugly.

One of the greatest films I have ever seen. It's a western genre film made in 1965 so it is old and I was sceptical as I hadn't seen many western films before but after watching this it's actually got me into them.

This film has everything, solid story, emotion, lots of dark hunour, action and just utterly gripping from start to finish. The background musical score was also brilliant. Also Clint Eastwood is also such a cool actor.

I later found out the film is actually part of a trilogy known as the dollars trilogy but you don't have to watch the first 2 films to understand this one but I am going to now since I found this one so good.

Watched Dumb and Dumber 2.

Obviously not as good as the first one, but still very funny.

Not sure whether to watch Martian or Sicario tomorrow

I've seen both in the last two days.

Sicario is good but not as good as I was hoping. There is probably 30 minutes in the middle that they could have done without. It really slows down and kinda gets a bit repetitive in the middle. But the beginning and ending are worth it.

The Martian is very good. Although for some reason Mars never really looked like Mars to me. Just looked like the outback in Australia.

Both are worth watching, but don't expect either to blow your mind.

Glad you liked it. It is definitely on my list I have earmarked this one for a long time.

Black Mass. Thank God I didn't pay to watch it. Not that I do most movies but glad nonetheless.

Thanks for your post, although I saw it a bit late lol I ended up watching Martian in the cinema; you're right, it didn't blow me away but thoroughly enjoyed the premise of the narrative and for a sci-fi movie the science stuff was rather accurate in comparison to the norm with these types of movies. Probably download Sicario at some point, the reviews around the net seem pretty good,

Forrest Gump (1994) - 8.5/10 - Very nice movie! Sometimes funny, but sad at the same moment.

The Final Girls (2015)

A very unusual kind of spoof/homage to the slasher movies. The story revolves around a girl whose mom was a movie star who starred in a slasher movie in the 80s which derailed her career. The mom then dies in a car accident. While in the process of grieving, the girl is called to a screening of her mom's cult slasher movie where she and her group of friends get sucked into the movie itself where they have to figure out how to get out.

Very unusual in that it is genuinely heartfelt. It is funny, sometimes scary but the emotional component is amazingly good. Excellent acting by Malin Akerman and Taissa Farmiga helps too. What also helps is the killer and the danger he poses is not downplayed one bit. The body count is also unpredictable.

Aside from some blatantly bad CGI and a surprising lack of gore and T&A, the movie is fantastic.

The premise might sound like Last Action Hero but this one is much better realized.

8.5/10

The Final Girls - 6 out of 10 (starts off promisingly but gets dragging by the middle of the film. A nice meta horror comedy, nevertheless)

Turbo Kid - 9 out of 10 (One of the best post-apocalyptic wasteland genre film, I have seen in a very long time)

Se7en (1995) - 8/10 - Exciting detective film thriller until the end + outstanding acting by Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman.

The Martian.

Damon is excellent, film has a really tense bit near the end. Went on perhaps a few mins too long for my liking and the ending was quite rushed I thought.

An enjoyable film regardless though.

7/10

Big Hero 6 - good family movie. Though Disney, at least improve their story lines. So predictable

Jawani Phir Nahi Aani

10/10, honestly.

Now before I start - I hate rom-coms/comedy films in general. No, I don't want to sit and laugh at nonsensical things - unless they're really funny or pulled off well. And Indian 'comedy' - ugh. The worst of the lot. It's brash, it's stupid (if not vulgar) and the jokes barely make me crack a smile.

Not with this though. The humour was balanced, not messing up the 'family mahol' - and the acting itself was great, with minimal 'overacting'. I haven't laughed like this in AGES, God - I loved this movie. Loved everything about it! Might go and see it again next weekend xD

Your own mood matters the most while watching a comedy. In cinemas with people laughing it helps a lot.

Not in this case.. My family loves those senseless Indian comedies, and they always drag me with them to watch those. It's torture for me - I barely crack a smile during such films (I'm not a fan of comedies in general)..

But this was something else xD

The Martian - 7-8/10 - In my opinion a good movie - specially in scientific circumstances. Had some tense situations, but like Donal said an a bit rushed ending. Still think, it isnt good enough to surpass "Interstellar" - mainly due to the plot and the illustration of the space. Speaking about "Interstellar", it was quite weird to see Damon playing a positive character after his role in "Interstelllar".

Recently watched About Elly, an Iranain movie directed by Asghar Farhadi, the director of the The Seperation.

It starts of as a family beach picnic comedy reminiscent of the 80's Hasina Moeen drama's like Ankahi or Tanhayian. The main character is eagerly trying to be the match maker between a recently divorced family friend who lives in Germany but is visiting Iran for a short time and the teacher of her young daughter. The first third of the movie goes like any light hearted rom-com where guys display their extrovert macho side while women play the happy companions, typical of any male dominated society. You expect the ending to be predictable with the men in the group being humbled by the sharp wit and tenacity of the women and with the match maker ultimately triumphant, dancing to the music of the would-be couples wedding ceremony, i.e. everyone lives happily every after. But this is a Asghar Farhadi movie where suddenly everything gets turned upside down in a gut-wrenching devastating moment. The tragedy that ensues turns everyone into a shadow of their former selves. Fissures between them start bubbling to the surface. The deep rooted insecurities, the dark side of family dynamics that all of us are so fimilar with makes the previously serene and hypnotic beach landscape into an agonizingly haunting and lonesome terrain. We find more about the character Elly, the opinion about her gets divided. Was she even a good person to begin with. What side should I be taking if I was faced with such a dilemma? Questions like that keep surfacing in your mind while you watch this drama unfold.

Without going much into the storyline, its worth saying how relatable this story and its characters are for anyone but especially people of Pakistan, as we also encounter similar societal taboos and restrictions. Ultimately you come off wondering why the world is so hopelessly myopic in its perception of others. Life and death, friendship, love, family - concepts we all share so wholeheartedly and without much variance and yet how divided and spiteful of eachother we all are. I wish people of US and Israel among others take the time to watch this movie. The humanity of the characters, their virtues along with their shortcomings make them just like any of us. We all share the same insecurities. We all expereice the same joys and unexpected tragedies and try to deal with them in the best logical way possible. In short, we are all the same.

This movie is no less in scope and intensity as The Seperation, only its more suspenseful and grand in its social message. Highly recommended. Its available on Netflix streaming if anyone is interested.

re-watched 3 movies over the weekend for the millionth time...deff one of the bests I've ever seen

1) Rush
2) The Departed
3) Blood Diamond

here's a few good ones I've seen over the past few months

1)Taking of Pelham 123 - What a movie
2) J Edgar - Leo is brilliant but movie itself is slow
3) Too Big too Fail
4) The Fury
5) Mad Max
6) The interview

all are decent watches

agreed...the acting is what I enjoy more than the story in Blood Diamond. Do watch Taking of Pelham 123 if you haven't...Denzel at his best
Oh being a cinephile I have watched both and find the earlier one a bit better due to Travolta's overacting in the latter. Washington usually chooses safe films and apart from a couple of performances I don't really rate him that much. Had the potential to be really great.

have you seen contagion?

Inside Out. Easily the best animated film for a long long long time.

The Visit - 7/10

A pretty good thriller with solid acting by the leads (in particular, grandma and grandpa were unbelievably creepy/scary). For once, Shyamalan's trademark twist was very believable/relevant and was a real surprise (at least for me). While both the kids (teens actually) characters were very well etched for most part of the movie, disappointed with their act in the last 10 mins or so (where they behaved like a certified annoying MORONIC KIDS that we usually get to see in horror flicks). Overall, a pretty good thriller/horror film.

1947 Earth.

Set in Lahore during the stages of partition the story is narrated through the adult eyes of the girl Lenny. It talks about a group of people from various religious groups and how their relationship is affected by the partition violence in Lahore.

Cast: Aamir Khan, Nandita Das, Rahul Khanna

Mockingbird - 7/10

A found footage horror, has an interesting premise. Film tries to maintain the tension for 2/3rd of its run-time but the ending was such bullcrap, though. I could see where the ending goes but still the culprit revelation was simply illogical. Still a decent horror film for one time watch.

Mr Holmes. A masterclass from McKellen.

Watched The Theory of Everything.

It's based on the life of Stephen Hawking.

I found it a bit dull really and expected it to be more interesting 5/10

I guess it could have been a little better but they did a good job conveying emotion. The guy who played Stephen Hawking was outstanding though, deserved an Oscar.

Prisoners (2013) and Crimson Peak (2015). Both good ones.

Prisoners was excellent. Quite interesting that people show their true selves when they are faced by the worst possible adversities. Really liked the cliffhanger at the end as well.

Howl - 1/10 An utter trash from start to the end.

Green Inferno - 2/10 a very poor imitation of (in)famous Cannibal holocaust with awful writing/acting.

Suburban Gothic - 3/10 Except for the brilliant presence of Ray Wise (in every scene where he is there), this is largely a confusing/forgettable wannabe horror comedy with no clear direction.

San Andreas - 7/10 the story events were predictable but it was very entertaining

Pixels- 4/10, The character development was silly and the plot was terrible. Aliens sending real versions of video games of a tape that went into space? Really?

Singh is bling ..... wastage of time
welcome back .... Good time pass movie

Watching bridge of spies tomorrow. Been a while since a spielberg-hanks collab. Hopefully itll be good

Circle - Interesting low budget movie.

One thing that is interesting from talking about the movie with other people is that so many people care about the pregnant lady. If people don't think that abortion is immoral then why do they have a problem with killing the pregnant lady over the actual living kid?
