Without even looking I can say Lahore Qalandars.

That’s a team strong enough to compete and win the IPL. The rest is upto them to actually win this time instead of failing as usual
 
I think Qalanders have the best squad too. That being said I reckon they will go out early in the knockouts unless Fakhar has something to say about it. Can't wait to see pindi express 2.0 bowl!

AB isn't playing in Pakistan.

It's fairly easy to get into the knock outs but after that if your top players aren't willing to play the match that matter then you're already done for, look at the past results where teams like Quetta had to play with mediocre Zimbabwe players because their foreign players were too scared to play in Pakistan.
 
Lahore. They finally have two batsman who can bat through in Hafeez and Haris. They also have some destructive firepower. Though I don’t think Braitwaithe will find much success.
 
On paper Lahore Looks the most strongest one but combination wise Islamabad is also right up there followed by quetta and karachi then Sixth team and peshawar..

In every psl they had the strongest squad on paper and yet what happens? They lack combinations.

Though im sure with hafeez being captain this could change.

But in my opinion, karachi has a better chance than lahore if they vome up with a combination

Peshawar is surely the worst. Who is in charge of the selection there? Aweful, aweful picks. I'm not going to root for my home team this year.
 
I don't think any of Lahore's international players apart from Lamichanne and Brendan Taylor will come to Pakistan.

Peshwar looks the best. It has so many standout Pak players and guys like Pollard and Sammy are amongst the best T20 players in the world. And so many of them have been huge successes in previous PSL editions. I don't understand why people are underrating Peshwar tbh.

Think it'll be between Peshwar and IU in terms of who will win. IU really stands out for bowling, it's easily the most well rounded. Don't understand their pick ups IU they could have easily made their batting stronger, why Ian Bell and who is Phil Salt lol. But maybe IU knows best, they've often made those brilliant predictions/finding talent. We'll have to see.

I'd imagine it's something to do with him averaging nearly 50 at a strike rate of 139 in T20 this year.

Lahore team is very strong for UAE where all the foreign players would be available. But they would be severely weakened for the play offs in Pakistan if none of their foreign contingent comes to Pakistan.

Quetta and Peshawar's Pakistani contingent looks very strong.

Islamabad has a decent but not a world class squad.

Sixth team is very experienced for the playoffs in Pakistan but they would have trouble qualifying.

Karachi pathetic as ever.
 
QG for me. They have a good spin attack and Watson and Roussow are match winners.

Feel for the 6th team apart from 1/2 players that team looks very weak.

Amazed at Zalmi picks. They should have looked beyond Sammy as he like Afridi cannot withstand the rigours of the fast format. And secondly picking Misbah is a step backward due to the very reason. Batting is almost non existent

Whats wrong with Karachi? Munro, Ingram, Babar, Amir, Shinwari, Imad Wasim, Bopara, Ben Dunk, Livinstone , Amir Yamin are strong enough to win PSL. Karachi is a very good team in my opinion.
 
I’d rather have emerging /deserving players in the supplementary then these foreign mercenaries

It sure is - how on earth you could use one of your diamond player allowances on a 45 year old who was striking it well below run a ball last season is just baffling.

They should have chosen some better spinners but since, Qalanders picked Sandeep Lamichane as their 1st gold pick, Kings were left with no choice but to pick Sikandar Raza. However, apart from Jahid Ali and Usama Mir, their squad is good.

Where are the bowlers? Shaheen is the only bowler that's good. Cheema, Anderson, Brathwaite are average bowlers at best. This Lahore team looks like a poor man's RCB in IPL. And RCB never won because of the same reason.
 
IU has the most lethal spin attack in PSL. So for me it’s IU. Although they are a bit thin on proper batsmen.

You under estimate Rahat Ali and Yasir Shah. They will be handy and will bowl vital overs. Corey Anderson and Brathwaite are also experienced bowlers who will get their overs in. They are a decent unit that is batting heavy no doubt but this is vital for brand marketing anyways. Batsmen draw crowds and enhance the brand image. LQ have 3 top draw batsmen in AB, Fakhar and Corey Anderson. Plus many people are excited to see Sohail Akhtar in action as this might be a player that becomes ready to play for Pakistan post wc

Lahore will be last again unless Carlos bowls really well. Aqib really has no brain, how can you not get a third reliable pacer.
 
Lahore is clearly lacking pace bowling strength and that is going to cost them in the end. They have got the big names as usual but it wouldn't help them much, imo.

Shaheen and Haris Rauf would be decent enough fast bowlers in playing x1. Both are very good in death overs. Hafeez, Sandeep, Yasir and Anderson will take care of middle overs. Rahat and Cheema are good enough for bench strength.

Many supplementary players have played as a tactical decision as well. So i dont think so there is any restriction, its just a different financial structure for the supplementary players. Other than that they are equally part of the squad.

Shaheen and Rauf are pretty much in the early stages of their career, so making them front-line is putting a huge responsibility on their shoulders.

While Shaheen has done some good work with PCT, it still remains to be seem how Rauf fares in a new environment. I haven't seen cheema of late, but I guess he is not the bowler he once used to be, so there is quite risk involved.

Points to note:

Each playing XI features 3-4 foreign players (F).
Each playing XI features at least one emerging player (E).
Foreign supplementary picks don't feature in any of the XIs as their availability is likely to be limited.

Squad Analysis

i) IU have great depth in their squad thanks to the huge number of all-rounders in their squad. They had a fairly uneventful draft because they have retained the nucleus of last year's squad. The unfairness of the draft means they lack big foreign names, but nonetheless IU have been smart with their foreign picks for two reasons: i) their foreign players are available for the whole tournament and ii) the foreign batsmen are in-form and familiar with Asian conditions. Both of their emerging players are excellent.

ii) PZ is TTF galore and heavily reliant on a couple of players. IU were nostalgic in PSL2 and it cost them big time. PZ risk making the same mistake. The fifth bowling option could be a banana skin for PZ; TST had a similar problem last year and as a result they struggled to find the balance between having enough bowling options whilst also making sure the tail wasn't too long. By the looks of it, PZ will have that problem this year.

iii) KK look strong, especially if their foreign players are available for the whole tournament. As mentioned in the above line up, the one big question for them is who should they play at eight? This is a key decision in terms of balance; should they play an out and out bowler or a batting all-rounder?

iv) QG haven't received much attention but they have a very strong team (assuming they play the best XI!) QG this season have gone back to their roots/copied IU's template and are investing in young domestic players, particularly batsmen (with an eye to the games in Pakistan). QG look strong in all departments and have depth to their squad. QG's bowling attack means they will be offering a diet of spin to the opposition.

QG's biggest problem is themselves; if they repeat the mistake of blindly playing "experienced" domestic players (e.g. Ahmed Shahzad) and in the process leave their young domestic players to warm the bench, then they will struggle (and lose even more fans in the process). Conversely, if they actually give the young talent in their squad opportunities as set out in the above playing XI QG not only have a chance of winning the PSL but they will also regain the trust of fans.

v) TST are a rudderless ship and it shows. Their top four is likely to be all-foreign (and therefore unfamiliar with the conditions) given TST have next to no top order batsmen from Pakistan in their squad. In terms of experienced Pakistani players, they are heavily reliant on the ageing duo of Shoaib and Afridi. TST's tail will also be pretty long (Dan Christian's inclusion could help in that regard but he is a supplementary pick so depends on his availability).

vi) LQ have a strong squad and if they do well in PSL4 it will be because they have finally realised the need to combine aggression with accumulation (and not simply because they have AB in their team.) LQ's options at six are a little hit or miss so they will need to define that role pretty clearly and then select accordingly. Other than that there are two big problem areas: i) foreign player availability and ii) bowling attack.

In terms of i), LQ have more depth to their batting this season and they also have a Pakistani core to the team, so whilst losing foreign players wouldn't be ideal I personally don't think it would be the end of the world (assuming there are half-decent replacement players). LQ are fortunate in that, unlike QG in previous years, they aren't overly reliant on their foreign batsmen to provide aggression.

For me, ii) is bigger issue. Other than SSA, LQ just seem to lack the big names/bowling depth the other teams have and LQ could struggle with their fifth bowling option (though less so than PZ and KK). Then again, given their batting strength if LQ's batting line up is able to consistently fire and post above-average totals, LQ's bowling attack should be good enough. On a separate note, I can't help but think they could have been smarter with their first emerging pick.

Summary


In terms of best draft picks, it's a tie between QG and LQ; both of them have overhauled their squads and seem to have addressed their main weaknesses.

In terms of best young domestic talent, it's between QG and IU and I would give it to QG given most of their picks are "new" whilst IU have largely retained the same group of young players (and rightly so). The emerging picks of these two teams (QG: Nasim Shah, Ghulam Mudassar, IU: Nasir Nawaz, Musa) are mouth-watering prospects.

For me the four teams that will qualify are: IU, QG, KK and LQ.

IU and QG have covered all bases (in spite of the fact QG selected the likes of Ahmed Shahzad, Sohail Tanvir and Umar Akmal) and most importantly have depth in all areas. LQ's batting looks strong and whilst their bowling attack is decent it is a little uninspiring/lacks depth which is why I wouldn't quite put their squad at the same level. KK's top order and bowling attack looks strong but the key for them is making sure their lower middle order (5-8) is balanced. In terms of strongest squad (on paper) I would therefore say its between QG and IU. If QG play an XI similar to the above line up then they could surprise a lot of people...

(N.B: None of the above denies the fact that pretty much all the franchises have made questionable selections/omissions.)
 
Based on above, KK getting rid of Hasan Mohsin seems questionable, as does TST getting rid of Saif.

TST was also probably the best team for Zeeshan Malik (based on their resources).
 
No vote for sixth team and quite rightly so. Quetta's my pick.

However, if the sixth team is named Sialkot Stallions, things will change big times.
 
It’s hard to have an outright favourite this year
All teams roughly as good or bad as each other
Those who had good picks at the draft, had some weak retention’s and vice versa

A lot of people underrating the Karachi side, they have some unknown picks but their retention’s were really strong so it’s hard to rule them out
People overrating Lahore again, they’ve improved but doubt they can win it
ISLU made good retention’s and some smart picks at the draft, something we expect from them by now
PZ have a really old squad, but probably have the best pace attack out of all the teams
QG made some good trades and then some good signings, Shehzad and Akmal is a risk for them but they are generally good in the PSL
The Sixth Team could probably form an awesome ODI team, but think they are the weakest side in this PSL

Dan Christian has been in very good form. As I mentioned, if he is available for the whole tournament, he will provide MS the much needed balance. Also Shan has been in good form so imagine he will slot in the top order so their XI would likely be:

1. Shan
2. Joe Denly (F)
3. Steve Smith (F)
4. Laurie Evans (F)/Pooran (F)
5. Shoaib Malik
6. Umar Siddique
7. Shahid Afridi
8. Dan Christian (F)
9. Irfan (l/s)
10. Irfan
11. Ilyas (E)

So the bowling attack would be:

Irfan (tall), Ilyas (emerging)
Irfan (legspinner), Afridi (legspinner)
Four overs covered by Christian, Denly, Malik and SS.

That actually shapes up to be a pretty good team, although a lot depends on availability. Denly probably won't be available for many games so Pooran will have to open. Also Smith is likely only available for the first leg of the tournament so we could have a QG situation i.e. even if MS did qualify for knock-outs they would be weakened. This makes their 21st player all the more important. It's difficult to decide on how MS should use their extra pick as they need an extra pace bowler and an extra top order batsmen, but ultimately the need for a top order local batsman (who is familiar with conditions) is what I would prioritise, so somone like Zeeshan Malik would be perfect. If they want someone more experienced then Naved Malik would be a smart pick.

Yeah was also thinking along those lines. Their players are looking in good touch with just over a month to go.

Would imagine the 21st pick would be announced soon as well, will be interesting to see the picks.
 
Didn't watch but Laurie Evans scored a century in BPL (I know, that doesn't mean much) but more interestingly he was opening for his side. That gives MS more flexibility with the opening slot. MS's squad is coming together nicely with a lot of their players in form. The loss of Smith could actually be a blessing...
 
With the additions/replacements, MS are coming together nicely.

IU and QG should definitely qualify. IMO the remaining two spaces will most likely be decided between KK, LQ and MS.
 
MS are going to be hit hard by availability because of Big Bash (which has dragged on for far too long). Could prove to be the difference.
 
Lahore Qalandar could do something big with Prof in command - this could be their year.
 
There's a lot of love on PP for LQ this time around and they are just ahead of IU in the poll.

Good choice of skipper for LQ, Shaheen Afridi could be the matchwiner with the ball and AB with the bat. But with LQ it never goes according to plan does it.

Lahore doesn't have local all rounders and that will make their tail big like last year. While Shaheen, Haris Rauf, Yasir Shah and Sandeep Lamichane are likely to get most of the matches, it becomes a super long tail.

If Shaheen and ABDV are playing together in any team, that has to be my favourite team as well.
 
If I have to rank the sides from strongest to weakest, it would be:

1) ISLU (Really balanced team, with good retentions and good picks)

2) KK (They have some really good players forming a strong unit with strong batting and strong bowling).

3) LQ (An improved team, but I think therw are too many all rounders in it, if they play their combination properly then there is a chance for them to be in the play offs)

4) PZ (A very very old team, however, it is a balanced side and it has a really good bowling unit as well, weaker than the previous years).

5) QG (Don’t think they have a good bowling unit, and if their top order will fail, I doubt that their middle order can save them)

6) MS (An unreliable team with a lack of good spinners. I cant see them going through to the playoffs).
 
Most foreign players in PSL sides seem to be batters or all-rounders

So far all PSL teams have primarily played foreign players as batters or all-rounders. We need most exposure in batting and its really sad that we aren't able to given many chances to our young batters or new talent because teams are drafting foreign players as batters
