A large section of Pakistani Punjabis classify themselves as Arain (as distinct from Aryan or Indo-Aryan. The two should not be confused). Arains have tended to only marry amongst themselves, to the extent that until recent times, an Arain marrying a non-Arain was a major taboo. It is still the case amongst large sections of Arains in Pakistan, especially in small towns and villages.
Historically, Arain are said to be primarily agriculturist communities, although over the centuries they have become prosperous through agriculture and now form the backbone of the educated and business middle classes of Pakistani Punjab.. There are many theories as to their backgrounds and origins, ranging from being Sikh converts, to farming communities brought over from as far away as Syria by Mohammed bin Qasim to provide food for his armies. It's also claimed that an Arain can tell without even asking, but through looks and mannerisms alone, whether or not you are also an Arain.
