Would Australia have been able to compete with Kohli, Bumrah, Ashwin, Jadeja, Shami, Ishant present?

Australia would have lost 3-1, thrashed except for that freak win in the first match.

No.

Almost all of those players are in age-related decline - it's why several of them broke down.

India has stayed competitive because Australia only have 3 decent batsmen and because Starc is somehow selected ahead of Pattinson. And because an ageing India which was thumped in New Zealand has been rejuvenated with young blood.

I'm pretty sure India would be comprehensively losing if Kohli was there. Him leaving has been the best thing to happen to the team from a leadership standpoint.

Not sure about asterisk mark but this mark is certainly there :inti

True. Australia would have actually won this series had they replaced David Warner and Starc who are both suffering from age related decline.

Age Theory, Height theory all aside this Indian team has fought down the wire.
Last time the excuse was the the two batsmen are not there.
This time the excuse is about form.

After all these years it's fair to say we're better than Australia no matter who plays.

At home we regularly smash them, and either win or come close to winning when we play them away.

Waiting for Mamoon bhai.

This is the greatest Asian test team of all-time and Kohli is the GOAT Asian test captain. He has 33 test wins which is much higher than any other Asian captain.

Starc is suffering from No-Sandpaper Related Decline.

Australia is stronger than 2 years ago because of the return of Smith and Warner and the arrival of Labuschagne.

But they have no second opener, number 5 is a disaster they are filling with the reserve keeper,, the all-rounder at 6 does not yet look like a Test bowler and that is putting an extra workload on Cummins and Hazlewood given that they have to carry Starc as a specialist tailender-killer.

It's a fairly weak Aussie team and the best thing that has happened to India is getting younger players on the paddock under a superior captain - Rahane is a vastly better leader than Kohli.

Full-strength India is better than full-strength Australia even in Australian conditions.

Sandpaper gate was 3 years ago. Its interesting how Starc's stats were damaged during the India tour in 2018, but were excellent for the SL, Pakistan and NZ tours and then suffered again when India toured

They were all there in the first match bar Ishant, and we all saw what happened....
36* (I will not forget the star)

Starc is a minnow and D/N test bully. Cummins and Hazlewood bowl admirably to set up batsmen, and he (and Lyon on occasion) just let the pressure off with their spraygun tactics.

You are missing the point, Australia fielded the best they could offer (no injuries/ misses from anyone)

India could not field their best and regular XI for most part of the series.

It’s called selective statsmenesia..
Also he is 6 months older so he has declined a lot as 6 month when playing against India is like 5 years.

Kohli, Bumrah, Ashwin, Jadeja are in age related decline? Going by performances if anyone is in age related decline its Naseem Shah lol.

Minus Ishant who didn't travel with the team, the others got comprehensively beaten in the one game they all played :warner

Warner didn't play the first 2 tests and has been half fit in the other 2. Injuries have had a much more significant impact on India though of course

Bumrah bounced back in 2nd test similarly we expected all our star players to perform in next tests had they been fit/ available.

Smith did not score anything in first 2 tests so it's like saying it does not matter whether he plays/ not for last 2 .. lol

I'm just trying to cope with Australia's poor performance :mv

They would have been able to compete for sure. Would they have won? No way to know and it is difficult to predict if the first choice players would have performed better or worse than their replacements over a short period of time.

Hahahaha, Ashwin just outbowled Lyon so badly in this series and averaged 28. Bumrah had to bear extra burden due to injuries and yet was very good. Jadeja? He was dominating this series till he got injured.

And lol Kohli.

Just like there's no way to be sure that Australia would have competed with Warner and Smith in the side last time :inti

So Indias series win in 2018 is genuine then. Case closed

Injurys are part and parcel of the game, all these so called "ifs" and "Maybes".

every series in history of game can be scrutinized on what "Ifs" its a waste of time exercise.

I think Kohli's absence is a blessing in disguise. The team has looked much more relaxed & composed under Rahane & shown more grit & steel

With Kohli's turbo charged style , I always get the feeling that the team is always on the edge & prone to implosion ( CT17 final, WC19 semi , 36 all out )

Ishant & Shami were definitely a miss although Siraj has covered well for Shami.

1st test- Jadeja, Rohit, Ishant(Shami 2nd half)
2nd test- Kohli, Shami, Ishant, Rohit
3rd test- Kohli, Shami, Ishant, Umesh, Jadeja (2nd half)
4th test- Kohli, Bumrah, Shami, Ishant, Ashwin, Jadeja and Umesh

We are missing Kohli the batter :inti

Yea true but Kohli the captain comes as part of Kohli the batter package

I somehow feel what we gained from Rahane's captaincy was worth more than Kohli's batting value. I really doubt India wud have staged this comeback with Kohli as captain

Kohli captaincy is flawed & big liability for India - in both tests & ODI / T20
