Indian Islamic preacher Dr Zakir Naik who is currently wanted by Indian authorities for alleged terrorist offences has reportedly been granted citizenship by Saudi Arabia, according to The Middle East Monitor.

Sources said King Salman had intervened to grant Naik citizenship in order to protect him from arrest by the International Police Organisation (Interpol).

The 51-year-old Islamic preacher founded the Islamic Research Foundation (IRF). He’s believed to have been staying in Saudi Arabia to evade arrest in India after he was accused of playing a role in a terror-related case. Naik also has money laundering allegations against him. Some perpetrators of the Dhaka terror attack also claimed they were inspired by Naik.

Indian press reported enforcement officials in the country were planning to revoke his passport, after which Naik would be forced to return to India. However, they did not anticipate Saudi Arabia would grant him citizenship.

Naik has been booked for allegedly propagating enmity between different groups on the grounds of religion. His channel Peace TV has been banned in UK, Canada and Bangladesh. He was also denied entry to Canada and UK in 2012 after allegedly expressing support for al Qaeda, reported Star Online.

Good if it is true... His case related to terror was a complete fabrication of the media injected by the so called cow lovers or beef nationalists..

He always spoke poorly about Pakistan. Has been taught a harsh lesson by his own India over why it was created. Mind you, his comments like "all Muslim's should be terrorists" were beyond ignorant. What he meant was that Muslim's should terrorise terrorists.

Very disappointing news.

I've been living there for 15 years and I don't even have a PR and this joke of a "scholar" gets it for being an "islamic preacher". Absolutely hate him. Period.

Malaysians had a similar complaint, apparently he got a PR there as well when people living there for years don't have one.

Jumps ship from one intolerant country to another

Zakir Naiks case is different to ordinary citizens, his life was under threat in his country from a biased administration and extremist groups hence his case must have been considered as special.

First Aziza K, now this character (oh how I pine for some freedom of speech... character! For the love of RNGesus). I wonder if there's a pattern to all these preachers the Saudis keep saving. Unfortunately, I'm too slow to figure it out even if there is one. Nostalgic care to take a shot in the dark?

There's no pattern, really. The clever Nejdis like to mix it up, to throw us off the scent. For every Aziza K, Zakir Naik and Nawaz Sharif they save, they also provide sanctuary to or otherwise shield Musharraf, Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, and Idi Amin.

Good. Let him lodge up there and stop bugging the rest of us.

Well, good luck to him for his future endeavours. Our country was becoming too intolerant for him, good riddance for him.

that is his sort of environment im sure his Arab Ikhwan will treat him well.

Well a dump like Saudi Arabia is the ideal place for a person like Zakir Naik.
