“I don’t know under which law they (PCB) are filing for compensation (from BCCI)" : Zaka Ashraf

Former Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief Zaka Ashraf has said that the board’s move to file a compensation claim against India in the ICC disputes resolution committee would prove to be useless.

“The MOU is just a piece of paper and on top of that there is no clause in it which says that either party can go to the ICC disputes resolution committee for any compensation claim,” Ashraf said.

“I don’t know under which law they are filing for compensation,” he questioned.

Ashraf, who was heading the PCB when the Big three formula of governance was implemented by the International Cricket Council (ICC), said that he didn’t know why the Pakistan Cricket Board was hell bent on wasting so much funds on a “useless project”.

“I don’t know which law firms they have consulted or which law firms they want to give benefit too. But to me the compensation claim is a useless venture from which we will gain nothing.”

Sethi has left for London where he is due to hold a final round of talks with lawyers as he has announced Pakistan will file its compensation claim with the ICC in January.

Ashraf said that when he was chairman and refused to support and sign the Big Three government system, the Indian cricket board had offered to sign a MOU to play bilateral series.

“I told them that this MOU was useless since it didn’t have any clause which allowed the PCB to approach a arbitrator to get compensation if India didn’t honour the document. And if Indian board backed out where would we go and whom we approach for justice,” he said.

“I don’t know what prompted him (present chairman Najam Sethi) to sign this MOU on a piece of paper with no proper clauses to cover Pakistan’s damages.”

Ashraf also questioned the budget of nearly one and half billion rupees approved for the renovation and upgrade of the national stadium in Karachi.

Oh Zaka shut up, i would rather listen and have faith and belief in a go getter like Sethi rather than a loser like Zaka who did nothing when in charge of the PCB. The same guy who played a series in India for free and the same guy who wasted so much money and still could not hold the PSL and said that the PCB could not hold the PSL profitably.

Well Sethi has prevailed inspite of all the problems, critics and challenges, why? Because the man is a go getter, he thinks positively, backs himself and is a risk taker and i certainly back him to do his best to take the BCCI to task for cancelling 5-6 home series with Pakistan even on neutral territory, the world needs to get the message that Pakistan and the PCB is not some toilet paper that they can keep on mistreating and getting away with.

PCB’s legal battle against BCCI ‘good for nothing’: Zaka Ashraf

KARACHI: Former chairman of Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Zaka Ashraf has said that board’s legal battle against, India for not honouring MoU of playing a bilateral series, is good for nothing and it will not bring anything for Pakistan.

Speaking to journalists in Karachi, Zaka said the PCB’s MoU with India wasn’t a properly drafted agreement and it didn’t have clause to ensure compensation.

“This battle will only cause embarrassment to Pakistan Cricket Board as it will not get anything. Furthermore, I believe that following this tussle, the BCCI will do efforts to isolate Pakistan in international cricket by blocking cricket series for us,” Zaka said.

The PCB had on Thursday sent an official notice to the International Cricket Council seeking formation of dispute panel to adjudicate the matter of Pakistan-India bilateral cricketing ties.

“The MoU was not legally protected as I don’t see any clause, which may allow Pakistan to claim compensation or to go to any court of arbitration against the BCCI for not honouring the commitment,” he said while suggesting that the matter should have been handled diplomatically.

The former chairman said that India offered him the same when he was heading the PCB, but he took a principled stand in the interest of Pakistan.

“First, I told them that we are against shifting all powers to three nations, second I asked them even if we supported, what would we get out of it,” Zaka explained.

“I was insisting that there should be a clause to give us legal protection against the BCCI if they refused to play series with us making any excuse,” he said.

The former PCB chief said that he demanded a clause for taking BCCI to Court of Arbitration for Sports in case of dishonouring the commitment, but India didn’t agree to it.

“Even Giles Clarke came to me and I made him clear on my stance; upon listening to my position the ECB chief also agreed that it was legally good for us to demand such clause while signing any agreement with India,” Zaka said.

He confirmed that Pakistan’s tour to India in late 2012 was just a goodwill tour and PCB didn’t get any monetary benefit out of it, but added that it is incorrect to say that PCB was at the losing end on that tour.

“BCCI took care of all the expenses, so how could we suffer any losses,” he said.

“In fact, on the sidelines of that series, I had fruitful discussions with my then Indian counterpart Srinivasan, who had agreed on resumption of bilateral ties and promised that he would convince the government, but that couldn’t happen,” Zaka concluded.

Despicable stuff by Pakistani's at times and not very uncommon, they will side with another country against their own for their own selfish petty grudges and self interest.

Imagine how Indian fans feel about Shashank Manohar.

India were suppossed to play a home series with Pakistan in 2012. Zaka did not only choose to not fight with the BCCI about this but also conceeded to the BCCI by playing a series against India in India in 2012 and the PCB got nothing out of it. Spineless individual.

Sethi maybe a loud mouth, but we are talking about a guy who has a degree from Cambridge, is the guy who is the head of Friday times, a very learned man, who's predictions are usually correct regarding the political scenario of Pakistan, and one of the most intelligent man in this country currently.
Contrary to popular belief he is very pro-establishment, and is well connected with all top level Generals and politicians alike.
PSL was his brainchild and he has been the only man successful in bringing cricket back to Pakistan..

It could be a saving face from Sethi as well for backing Big 3, but if he does have a document that has legal value then he can put BCCI on the backfoot atleast even if they don't get the compensation

and BCCI hires many men like these.

Yes, no amount of smart men can avoid a legal case if it has a validity to be filed.

that itself needs to be validated if the case does hold any water or not but saying that the man's intelligence would win you this case doesn't hold any

I guess so!

and two of your ex PCB chairmen agree with me as well

All of our opinions (including the Ex PCB chairmen as well) are irrelevant in this scenario.

It would be best to see how exactly things pan out from here. As you might've already guessed it I am rooting for Sethi in this. Good luck to all your smart men as well :srini

PPP pitches two candidates for interim PM slot

The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) put forth the names of two candidates for the caretaker prime minister slot, Express News reported.

Former Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Zaka Ashraf and former foreign secretary Jalil Abbas Jillani were recommended by the opposition party.

Another round of talks in this regard is scheduled to be held on Tuesday.

Talks between the prime minister and leader of the opposition in the National Assembly remained inconclusive on Friday. Both sides failed to finalise the prospective caretaker prime minister before the PM left for Turkey.

Sources privy to the Abbasi-Shah meeting said the opposition leader sought the PM to pick either former governor State Bank Dr Ishrat Hussain or Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to United Nations Dr Maleeha Lodhi or former chief justice of the Supreme Court Tassaduq Hussain Jillani.

The government, however, was pressing for one of its own candidates: Former secretary of the ECP Ishtiak Ahmad Khan and former chief justices Jawad S Khawaja and Anwar Zaheer Jamali.

PPP has the gall to name this incompetent irrelevant buffoon Zaka Ashraf for care taker PM.

I hope Dr. Maleeha becomes the caretaker PM.
