England face-off against New Zealand in a two-match Test series, with the opening Test getting underway on 2 June at the Home of Cricket.

Overview:

England vs New Zealand
Lord's, London
2-6 June, 11:00 local

England will aim to blood in some younger players, while New Zealand will have one eye on the upcoming ICC World Test Championship final as the two sides clash in the opening Test of the two-match series at Lord's.

Test regulars Jos Buttler, Jonny Bairstow, Moeen Ali, Chris Woakes and Sam Curran have all been rested for the series by England. Other core players, like Ben Stokes and Jofra Archer, are currently recovering from respective injuries.

Ben Foakes, who was set to don the gloves in Buttler's absence and make his debut in home conditions, will also miss the series due to a freak injury. In the absence of so many key players, it'll be interesting to see the combination their skipper Joe Root decides on.

New Zealand, meanwhile, will see the series as the perfect opportunity to tune-up for the inaugural WTC final, against India in Southampton, starting on 18 June.

New Zealand have a settled unit, with the only senior pacer Trent Boult missing for the two-match series. In his absence, Tim Southee will likely share the new ball with all-rounder Kyle Jamieson. The Kane Williamson-led side could also hand Test debuts to opener Devon Conway and batting all-rounder Rachin Ravindra.

Remember the last time:

The two sides last faced off in a Test series in 2019 in New Zealand, where the home side emerged as 1-0 victors.

New Zealand comfortably won the opening Test in Mount Maunganui by an innings and 65 runs, with BJ Watling playing a starring role with a double century. Joe Root scored his maiden Test double ton in the second Test in Hamilton, as the two sides played out a draw.

What they said:

Ollie Robinson (England bowler): "I have done a lot [of research] on New Zealand's top four. I have watched a lot of footage and been trying to work out how I am going to go about getting them out and setting them up."

Kyle Jamieson (New Zealand bowler): "I am certainly focused on this Test coming. It's pretty special to be part of a Lord's Test and be part of the England tour and the final as well."

Squads:

England Squad: Rory Burns, Dominic Sibley, Zak Crawley, Joe Root(c), Ollie Pope, Daniel Lawrence, James Bracey(w), Craig Overton, Mark Wood, Stuart Broad, James Anderson, Sam Billings, Olly Stone, Jack Leach, Ollie Robinson, Haseeb Hameed

New Zealand Squad: Tom Latham, Tom Blundell, Kane Williamson(c), Ross Taylor, Henry Nicholls, BJ Watling(w), Colin de Grandhomme, Mitchell Santner, Kyle Jamieson, Tim Southee, Neil Wagner, Doug Bracewell, Will Young, Jacob Duffy, Matt Henry, Devon Conway, Ajaz Patel, Daryl Mitchell, Rachin Ravindra

Interested to see how kyle jamieson performs in not so familiar conditions

Really looking forward to the game.

Just get a feeling NZ are going to surprise a lot in these two games.

They may be more swing friendly than new Zealand.
So he will most likely still churn out good performances

Whatever i've watched of him i think he relies more on bounce n pace which are on offer a bit more in NZ than Eng. England is different ball game mostly because you need to pitch the ball further up

No better picture in world cricket than Lords test with bright sunshine. Should be a cracker of a game.

Bracey, Robinson and Conway all expected to debut.

Will be great to see fans back at the grounds.

New Zealand win the toss and will bat first

Nz have a very packed batting line up.
Batting till no. 7
Though even southee and Wagner have test 50s

It's a legacy defining few weeks for this NZ team. They need a big away win to back up years of home domination, and an ICC trophy after so many near misses.

3 straight wins this month and Kane Williamson will become a legend of the game and that pace attack can also be considered as one of all-time great pace attack.

So Latham and Conway - 2 left handers opening eh? Broad's first spell from around the wicket will be relatively quick and accurate. Can they survive that?

Why did they dropped Tom Blundell? He was doing pretty fine I guess. They should have dropped Nicholls who is more of a minnow basher.

Where is Trent Boult, was looking forward to watching him in England

Devon Conway - almost 30 and debuting in test today. At Lords.

Steady start from the openers. This looks a good pitch to bat on and will only get better as the grass gets baked under the sun.

Guy has a seriously good first class record. And few LOI'S he's played he's been very impressive too. Good import from SA

Corrected their lengths after bowling too full in the first 5 looking for swing.

Eng mostly serves flat pitch unless the opposition is India. Still remember the Lords pitch they served us in 2014 and 2018. So much grass that cows would have grazed there.

Not a single ounce of grass in today's game. Even in last summer against Pak, pitches were flat.

Green pitches were laid out in 2015 Ashes at Trent Bridge and Edgbaston vs Australia.

Really hot weather since last weekend so expect the pitch to be dry and a very good batting wicket .

England bowling without cloud is no so good .india or new Zealand bowling are much better than England

Brave of ENG not to have a spinner if the conditions are expected to be dry.

Tom Latham has serious issues vs genuine quicks. Mark Wood should have been given a go till now to remove Latham.

Root again disappointing with his captaincy. No spinners also, wrong move.

They dont have Stokes as a seam bowling allrounder so they need 4 quicks.

Stop this crap please, so basically your saying two of the greatest seamers of all time just basically rely on over head conditions?

94mph from Wood. You need an extra bit of pace on a surface like this.

Robinson is similar to Ball and Overton. Not much quality tbf. England gonna struggle after Anderson and Broad in England.

You can see the difference in pitch conditions between NZ and England in the way Conway is struggling with the short ball. Its not as similar as people think.

Good work by NZ.

Solid start by them and they've not been in much trouble at all.

Most Test matches played at home:

94 - Sachin Tendulkar
92 - Ricky Ponting
90 - James Anderson
89 - Alastair Cook
89 - Steve Waugh

Tendulkar played so many away games and still average 50+. Truly the greatest of all-time.

Devon Conway and Kane Williamson have taken New Zealand to 85/1.

Highest opening partnership by a visiting team in England since July 2016.
Dhawan - Rahul (60)
Latham - Conway (58)
Dhawan - Vijay (50)

So ENG have no spinner or a Stokes to keep a lid on things from one end.

Anderson's a senior citizen and Broad's about to join him. Wood is express and not meant for grunt work. That only leaves Ollie, the debutant.

Don't think ENG thought through their attack for this test.

They are missing Archer, Sam Curran and Ben Stokes badly.

Anderson gets Williamson for the 7th time in 15 innings he's bowled to him: 345 balls, 133 runs, 19 runs per wicket.
Averaging just 19.00.

Weird dismissal for Kane. Right out of the middle back onto the stumps.

Just tuned in...good to see top level cricket back....looks to be sunny @ Lords , pitch looks flat - well-not too many demons in it....I guess Eng missed a trick with no spin?? no mo or leach??.....and for nz - isnt trent bolt playing? will be intrested to see the tall kyle jamieson goes in eng conditions....match should be cracking...

Jack Leach in England

Ross Taylor in one of those situations where he looks awfully out of form but somehow turns it into runs.

The last visiting batsman to hit a ton on Test debut at Lord's -- Sourav Ganguly in June 1996. Can Devon Conway score a ton on Test debut at Lord's? Looks solid. Only 5 batsmen have hit a century on Test debut at Lord's!
