The match is keenly poised with South Africa being only 25 or so runs behind, but with their top 3 back into the hutch.

This will be a crucial day, Pakistan has to strike hard and early, and it would be a big boost if Shoaib came back today.

C'mon PAKISTAN! :D

What an amazing inning from Inzamam ... he fought like a true warrior, and helped put Pakistan in a virtually match-winning position.

Following him through the innings, I was reminded of another wonderful player, who used to marvel at playing with the tail. Asif Iqbal. I don't have direct memories of this particular game, but read about it in detail.

It was 1976-77. Australia was the best team in the world, having recently destroyed the second best (West Indies) by 5-1. And in came Pakistan to play three tests. In their last encounter with Australia, Pakistan had lost 3-0 to Ian Chappell's team.

In the first game at Adeliade, Pakistan scored 272, Australia responded with 454. (Facts are from my memory; the scores, courtesy Cricinfo!). In their second outing, Pakistan were 379-9 ... 207 ahead, and more than enough time for Aussies to complete the chase. Out comes the debutant Iqbal Wasim to join Asif Iqbal. What happened next was nothing short of a miracle. Against one of the best bowling lineup, these two batted for 96 minutes, and scored 87 runs, before Iqbal ran himself out. His contribution: 4 runs. This partnership succeeded in saving the game for Pakistan ... Australia had to chase 285, and were 261-6 at close.

And so, when Pakistan next visited Australia, in 1979-80, the dust had hardly settled after a 5-1 drubbing the Aussies had received from England. Plus, they were without their Packer players. Still, there was no way they were willing to lose to this team from the Sub-continent.

They were in an perfect position to win the first test in Melbourse. Chasing 382 to win the game, they were 305-3. And then came a collapse that will go in the history as one of the most remarkable ones. Sarfaraz Nawaz ran through their lineup, claiming 7 wickets in 33 deliveries, conceding a single run. They were 310 all out, and lost the game.

In the 2nd test, Australia had a good lead in the first inning, and had Pakistan on their knees in their second outing. But their chief tormentor, Asif, was there, with a century against his name, but was losing partners very quickly. When the last man, Sikander Bakht, joined him, the memories of Adeliade ('76-77) must've been fresh in their minds. Time was of the essence here too ... after 37 minutes of last minute partnership, Pakistan was 250 ahead, but time was running out. Sikander had faced a total of three deliveries, and Asif was not giving them any opportunity to have a go at the tail-ender. So, Alan Hurst decided to take the matter in his own hands, and off the 7th delivery of an over (8-ball overs in those days), when Sikander was getting ready to respond to the call for a single, Hurst "Mankaded" him (ran him out at the non-striker's end without bowling). The umpire had no option but to give him out, and Asif, in a rare case of displaying his anger, broke the stumps with his bat.

Pakistan went on to lose the game.

Just wanted to share these memories ... Inzi's knock brought 'em back.

Comments???

That was well writtten, Asif must have been a fantastic player.

Dont they have rain in Australia ?

Shoaib is NOT allowed to bowl until he has been ON the field for the same amount of time he has been OFF the field. That is possibly until Tea Time today

In which case I think its better to keep him in the dressing room

What is the latest score? They're showing some other match on TV and Cricinfo is down.

I must say, Maalishi Mushtaq has atleast justified some of his earnings by changing Kaneria's action. Kaneria looks in much more control of his leg breaks now.

Damn South Africa playing real slow here

Run-Rate of 2.12!

Another maiden, this time by Kaneria

one good thing is that pak is not giving any free runs away...just get the feeling we need one wicket & the flood gates will open for us ...

Yeah, I'm kind of hoping the same to happen.

We need to pick up wickets early or eles these two will get set again.

Damn it, I really hope we have Gul available for the next match. I can't help but keep thinking about we will bowl a possible 90 overs with 3 bowlers.

Kaneria gets Prince, just what the doctor ordered

Prince plumb in front on the back foot to one that turned back

Kaneria looks to have come back in form just at the right time. He can probably keep the pressure from one end all day long, he is bowling that well.

SA is batting very slow ... I think that suits Pakistan. Very similar discussion we had during the 1st test, when Pakistan was driving in the first gear.

The key for SA is to add runs on the board. There is far too much time remaining in the match to aim for a draw. Clearly, we're no longer in the days of Hanif Mohammad:

337 v WI at Bridgetown, 1957-58. West Indies scored 579. Pakistan responded with 106 all out. Followed on with three days remaining in the match. And Hanif played his marathon knock.

Yeah, Danish is bowling well and getting a deserved wicket. Lets hope he can run through a couple of batsmen quickly.

You beauty. Exactly what Pakistan needed - an early breakthrough. Get Kallis early and the match is in the bag.

you better believe it!

Danish bowling really well- Ramiz said he has had a change of action on Mushy's advice and its working wonders for his control.

Saj, there is still Boucher who loves pressure (and I hate him for that).

Now, the bowlers can concentrate on one line, as both batsmen are righthander.

Fantatstic ball from Asif. Bouncing and moving, a beauty, that just evades the edge

Asif bowling beauties all around!

Brilliant bowling here, I must say!

Excellent for Kaneria - bad for us as we cant see this thanks to idiots in FoxSports !

Thats exactly what we needed this morning...a wicket. Need to get Kallis now and if we do, I cant see SAF making us chase more than 120

Kaneria to Prince, out Lbw!! Kaneria tosses it up on the stumps, spins back in sharply from the rough, Prince goes on the backfoot and looks to defend it, rapped on the pads and a big shout, the finger goes up, Pakistan strike early!!! this is a big big wicket!!! A Prince lbw b D Kaneria 22(79) 4s-1 6s-0

good read... thanks

With only 3 bowlers, vital that Pakistan continue to pick up wickets regulary. Because the seamers will tire and Farhat is not a threatening option. As Boycott might say, you would be queing up to bat against him.

I hope Gibbs takes a single in Kanerias over. If Asif bowls to Gibbs, he may just get out. Or Sami can get his wicket. Which ever one Gibbs wants.

I KNOW some of the pplz are gona kill me for this is Shobby even on the ground +

Asif bowling at around 132 kph - seems to be in good rhythm and hope can bowl long spells in Shoaib's absence

We are not there you know. I can't go into the dressing room and ask Chacha Woolmer.

Gibbs is a bit of a block-bash player against spin. Not that good at working the ball around against spin.

He was shown sitting in the pavilion at the start of the match behind Woolmer and a few others-but clearly would not bowl

Do you want him to play as a specialist batsman?

If Hameed fails again then yes, Kamal hasn't played in a while and Faisel suks.

Asif persisting with his line- bowling from wide off the crease and angling it in and away off the pitch

Asif looking in good rhythm. I would like to see him bolw a touch fuller to Gibbs as the South African is a candidate for LBW or bowled.
