What's new

Arsenal FC | 2022/23 Season

Martinelli is a good talent but I feel he gets overrated a lot. He doesn’t have high footballing IQ & lacks composure. Unfortunately, it is rare to improve these aspects with experience because you either have it or you don’t.

Martinelli would never develop into a number 9 & although his explosive pace & energy on the wings makes him a difficult prospect to defend against, you cannot really start with him & have Trossard warm the bench.

The only thing Martinelli has over him is pace & it is not everything, especially when Trossard is miles ahead of him when it comes to passing, dribbling, first touch, decision-making etc.

Martinelli is a poor man’s Rashford. He will always go hot & cold. He is one of those players that I would be happy to see Arteta make a profit on & replace with a superior player in a year or so if he does not take his game to the next level which I feel he will not.

I think that's very harsh on Martinelli. I don't think there is actually much in it between these two.

Rashford has been better recently. As an England fan, I'm glad he's finally living up to his potential because he's been let down by poor coaches at Utd in OGS and RR.

Martinelli however has been superior over the last 2 years. Rashford has rejuvenated under ETH and has now his his peak. The Brazilian is just 21 years old and is 4 years younger than Rashford. They are at different stages of their careers but the difference between them is debatable. I'd argue Martinelli has a higher ceiling.

There aren't many players better than the duo in the left wing forward position. Mbappe and Vinicius Jnr are the only ones that come to mind.

Potentially 8 points in hand

2 games v City and an away game v Liverpool

We need to make sure that we restrict as much damage as possible in these 3 crucial/deciding games

Man City v Arsenal (Fri, 20:00 GMT)

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta on Friday's FA Cup fourth-round tie: "The key word is belief. Our staff and players believe. And from the atmosphere at the Emirates against Manchester United on Sunday, even though we went behind, you could sense that the supporters and players believed we could go on and win it.

"I am extremely proud and privileged to be in this moment at the football club. We are all feeling that energy from everyone as we continue to try to get the club back where it belongs."

==

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta: "There is no more news on the team, there are no more injuries. We have the two we brought in and a big bench.

"This is a big test against, in my opinion, the best football team in the world. I am looking forward to it. It will tell us a lot about where we are."

On new signing Leandro Trossard: "I see a player willing to make things happen. He is really composed, especially in the final third, which is something we needed to add to the team."

==

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta on the addition of Polish defender Jakub Kiwior: "He gives us more cover at the back. We have been with three central defenders for the majority of the season, which is very short in that position. We have been very lucky with injuries and needed to recruit.

"Jakub is a versatile player and is going to strengthen the team. If there is anything else available that would strengthen the team we will look at it.

==

A final word from Mikel Arteta on striker Eddie Nketiah, who has scored seven goals in his last seven games for Arsenal: "Eddie has been very consistent. I think he has surprised a few people in the way he has responded to the huge challenge and demands he has had after Gabriel Jesus got injured.

"We are positive that he can still get much better and still continue to develop."

Eleneny out with his 2nd longterm injury this season, means we are left with lakonga as only back up and he ain't good enough.

We needed to buy midfield cover this January and this makes it even more important now.

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta says he would "prefer" not to be competing with Pep Guardiola for the Premier League title.

The two Spaniards started their playing career together at Barcelona when they were youngsters and Arteta left his role as Guardiola's assistant at Manchester City to become Arsenal manager in 2019.

The Gunners currently top the table, five points above defending champions City with a game in hand.

"It's a strange feeling," said Arteta.

As part of City's coaching staff, Arteta won two Premier League titles, an FA Cup and two EFL Cups.

"I want the best for him, genuinely, and when you are challenging with someone like this, something comes in between that," he added.

Despite having to go up against his friend, Arteta has relished how Arsenal were competing with City for trophies.

"I always hoped that was going to be the case one day and it's happening this season," said the former Gunners midfielder, 40.

"That's not going to change any friendship, the moments that we have, how important he is in my life, how important he is in my profession.

"We're both willing to win and defend our clubs in any way and that's always been the case since day one.

"I would prefer to do it with someone else to be fair."

Arsenal visit City in the FA Cup fourth round on Friday - the first of three matches between the sides this season, with their Premier League encounters set for 15 February and 26 April.

Arteta led the Gunners to a record 14th FA Cup success in his first season in charge in 2019-20.

And he said the tie at the Etihad could be a defining match for both clubs this season.

"It is a competition that is very important to us, very attached to our club and history and will define a moment that is for sure," added Arteta.

Arsenal have signed Belgium striker Leandro Trossard from Brighton and Poland defender Jakub Kiwior from Spezia Calcio during the January transfer window.

Arteta said they could still sign a midfielder this month too, with Mohamed Elneny ruled out indefinitely because of a knee injury.

"We need some more cover in midfield ideally if we can," he added. "In this market it's pretty complicated to do that.

"The most important thing is that we get the performances and the time on the pitch that we need, with the players we have available that are already really good."

This all could've been addressed if we had signed Bissouma. Like Mudryk, he made it clear on his social media that he wanted to be at Arsenal.

He'd be a good low cost backup option for Partey. Spurs acquired him for just £25m.

The lack of urgency to acquire a CDM from Arsenal is really getting on my nerves.

100% agree the club is pretty much gambling on partey staying fit and xhaka not getting red cards. The whole late bidding for Douglas Luis at end of last window wasn't great either, just smacked of panicking.

Danilo another target is now at forest after again slowness from Arsenal.

Ibrahima Bamba and Martin Zubimendi both being linked now and have release clauses so Arsenal will have to stump up cash, no stupid haggling. Yes in summer we may go for rice or Bellingham, but we need a loan or signing now of a CDM for cup games, also to cover injuries or suspensions.

Bissouma would have been a good option.

Bissouma is very poor in Partey role. There is a reason why Conte uses him in 3-5-2 and not 3-4-3.

Negotiations enter into key stages for Caicedo’s future

Rejected as per Ornstein

Brighton want 75m, he's not worth that, hes had 1 good season.

Arteta might as well offer them lakonga on loan to maybe get deal done.

Brighton does not need to sell. He is not worth even 60 M. Only played 26 PL games. Market is crazy.

Brighton have rejected a £60m bid from Arsenal for midfielder Moises Caicedo.

The Premier League leaders are keen to strengthen their squad after Mohamed Elneny picked up an injury in training that could mean a lengthy lay-off.

Arsenal already have a small squad and manager Mikel Arteta does not want to jeopardise his team's title challenge through a lack of numbers.

Brighton had reportedly already turned down a £55m bid by Chelsea for 21-year-old Caicedo.

The Seagulls sold Marc Cucurella to Chelsea in a deal worth £60m, Yves Bissouma to Tottenham for £25m plus add-ons and Neal Maupay to Everton for £15m in the summer.

Earlier this month, Leandro Trossard left them to join to Arsenal for an initial £21m and Brighton do not have a financial reason to sell Caicedo.

Given they are currently sixth in the table, with the potential to move to fifth if they win their two games in hand on Tottenham, they have no desire to sell the Ecuador international either.

Caicedo has made 26 appearances in the Premier League, scoring twice and is under contract until 2025.

It is expected Arsenal will return with another offer but it remains to be seen whether Caicedo, who recently changed agents, will try to force his way out of the club before the window closes on Tuesday night.

Brighton manager Roberto de Zerbi told a news conference on Friday that the midfielder was "relaxed" and "focused only on Brighton."

The Italian said: "I spoke with him like a father, not like a coach.

"I hope he can stay with us until the end of the season because for my idea/my opinion that's the best solution for him and for us."

"I am focused on Brighton," Caicedo said recently. "I am here, I'm playing every day. Things from outside don't trouble me, nor does it take that focus away because I'm focused only on here.

"I handle [the speculation] well. You hear rumours here and there, but I only try to be focused on the club."

He's worth 40M max and even that's pushing it. He needs to hand a transfer request in to push for move.

Arteta should give them lakonga, Marquinhos (loan), just something that will make them budge.

Acquiring a CDM should've been the no.1 priority in the summer and this month's transfer window.

Now we're attempting to panic buy Caicedo who's worth nowhere near £60m. If the long term plan is to sign Declan Rice, it's ridiculous to spend so much on a Partey backup just for this season.

I'm sure there are other cost effective options in the £20m - £30m price range.

I think Bissouma would have better used at Arsenal, conte just plays Park the bus and doesn't get best out of his players.

Exactly Conte is ruining his career. Bissouma made a big mistake to join Spurs.

- Caicedo is a massive upgrade on lakonga, and would provide rotation options
- he's worth bout 40M (Brighton asking for to much)
- Arsenal will still go for rice in summer
- we should be in a situation for example where we have partey, xhaka, rice, caicedo that would give us depth to fight for titles and CL, xhaka and partey are going to in their 30s and players can quickly decline look at Thiago and fabhino as prime examples of that. Longterm if we are replacing partey / xhaka with cacideo / rice etc.. thats good long term planning.

Loom for example at Martinelli they guy looks tired and needs a rest because he's playing every game, now we can use trossard or ESR (if he ever stays fit) to help rotate.

We need the same thing in midfield.

I think the fact he had ongoing off-field issues meant arsenal didn't try and sign him, similar to why I think the club didn't go after Ivan toney.

It is either Rice or Caicedo, dont think both of them have room in the team.

Gabriel Martinelli has agreed a new 4 and a half year contract at Arsenal. Fresh deal in process of being finalised for Gabi to extend until summer 2027. [David Ornstein]

Plenty room for both. Elneny will be gone, lakonga will ge sold as well.

So we will end up with 2 new midfielders, xhaka and partey. Don't forget we will be in CL next season and most of our back ups who struggled in EL, league Cup and FA Cup game (1st half vs oxford) ain't good enough for CL.

Arsenal acting like a big club again after 20 years, don't forget xhaka and partey ain't going to be here forever, we can't neglect are midfielder like Liverpool.

We can't keep praying on partey to stay fit all the time.

Financially it would take more than 150m for both. Arsenal need RB, LB then.

The club was going to pay around 90 M for mudryk, instead that money has paid for trossard, the polish defender and looks like by sounds of it Arsenal have around 60-80M that they are willing to use on midfielder now.

A top 2 finish this season will bring in loads of money. Add to that being in CL next season that will bring extra revenue. This seasons CL

All 32 clubs to qualify for the group stages receive a base payment of €15.64m (£13.48m).

Group stage wins are worth an additional €2.8m (£2.4m), with draws earning clubs €930,000 (£802,000).

Reaching the round of 16 earns an additional €9.6m (£8.2m)

Quarter-finalists make €10.6m (£9.1m)

Semi-finalists make €12.5m (£10.7m)

And the finalists receive €15.5m (£13.3m) with €4.5m (£3.8m) for the champions

Then you add in money from home games, TV money from CL etc...

Arsenal would be able to buy a rice or a Belingham using CL expected money when they play in it next season. Also next season would be a start of a new FFP cycle as well so club could spend big one a player in summer.

LB we have cover, a younger right back can always be bought for not to much. Midfield Is the priority now. The fact we have 4 CBs now, to me tells me that white will be now kept as RB with tomyassu as back up.

Shouldn't be starting Rob holding in this game

Good to see Trossard starting

Managed to catch Arsenal leaving the team hotel for tonight's FA Cup match vs Man City. All players in the zone and straight onto the bus except Zinchenko who stopped to sign a few things. He's definitely already one of the most loved players in the squad.

One player who certainly shouldn't be starting is Partey. Right now he's the most clutch to our success in the PL.

Our next game isn't for 8 days, so no issue Partey playing. Martinelli was only one which needed a rest I think.

We sign a new CB and then still pick holding, this guy is garbage man.

Vieira needs to step it up tonight as well, as he's not fully taken his chance this season. There maybe games were oddegard might not play and he needs to step up.

Also holding is poor passer out from back so how good are early build up play is now going to be is a worry.

This game really is insignificant compared to the 2 City games in the league coming up and what they represent. Arteta clearly sees this as a way to rest some key players and not to play your cards or give them a dress rehearsal of playing against us before the proper big games.

City meanwhile are probably in the mindset of wanting to lay a few punches on us to get some momentum and confidence against us.

Arsenal should be looking to keep momentum going, the europa league now should be where should be not caring. At start of season yeah it was a European trophy, but we are 17 points ahead of 5th with a game in hand so should make CL. If we have added players for squad then FA and PL need to be 2 things club is aiming for.

Yeah looks like city will look to throw some early punches here.

Get this clown holding off and get white or saliba on. Shocking mistake.

Trossard looking excellent so far on right side, good save from keeper.

 holding already looking woeful.

Reminds me of the NLD at Spurs last season. Looks overwhelmed against a big player. Last year, it was Son and now it's Haaland. It's a complete mismatch in quality.

I was suprised Arsenal didn't get rid of him in the summer.

I expected Nketiah in current form to bury that. Great play by Trossard who's been superb. Martinelli will have to work hard to retain his spot in the first team.

With this new LCB now signed, plus white and Tomi who can play CB we have 6 options, meaning holding should be binned off this TW or in summer.

Defo spurs game vibes with his clueless defending

We have had the best 3 chances, worry is city will score if they get a chance. Trossard reminds of Arshavin, just very quick at ball carrying in short spaces. Eddie should have done better.

Surprise surprise he's got a yellow card. Arteta has to sub him off at HT.

Holding booked now, this clown is going to get sent off. Needs to be taken off at HT.

He certainly does! Arshavin was great to watch and was a menace for defenders.

The fact that city have 3 men around him when he gets ball shows they are wary of him. 29M will end up being a bargain.

Saliba for holding

Lakonga on for partey 🥲 hope this is not an injury

City win 1-0.

I really hope Partey isn't injured, our midfield look inept in that 2nd half with out him.

Unlucky Arsenal, the better team lost.

Oh well, Arsenal will do the double! League and European Cup on its way to beautiful North London soon!

Tonight has showed holding, lakonga and Vieira are not good enough for this team. Lakonga is slow on ball and zero positional sense.

We shouldn't have lost, 1 game at a time. Next is Everton away.

I'd pray none of the players are injured. Everton play dirty physical game esp at home. With a new manager someone in that game or maybe a few players from either side will be injured. Should be 3 points , Everton are trash atm.

I agree.

I much rather play ESR over Vieira as Odegaard's backup.

ESR can't stay fit, as much as I rate him as a player he could end up another wilshire.

The goal came from lakonga not being in front of back 4 where he should be, that 1st shot the city player had so much space.

Vieira is to weak and timid as well.

In midfield we need 4 quality players we have xhaka and partey, lakonga and elneny are mediocre. This why ive kept saying we need like for like rotation players not mediocre back ups.

Arsenal need to get caciedo in and get rid of lakonga.

We have won 1, drawn 1, lost 4 of last 6 visits at everyone. We have struggled with them being over physical. So yeah no injuries and we need 3 points. Dyche is likely to be in charge and they will play rough

Caciedo seems to have posted on his Instagram asking Brighton to let him go, Arsenal need to get this deal done.

Arteta on Partey's injury
Yeah he felt something and we didn’t want to take any risks so he could not continue

Makes the decision to start him today an absolute blunder. He's injury prone and it was always a matter of time.

Brighton will up their price for Caicedo knowing how badly Arsenal need him just watch.

Caicedo has posted on his Instagram pretty much begging Brighton to leave so I think Arsenal need to get a deal closed before Chelsea hijack it. Either him or someone else.

We ain't winning league it partey is out for any length of time. Lakonga is a liability and any sort of decent opposition and we will be exposed. Even xhaka didn't look great tonight as he doesn't have legs vs a mobile top side, when partey is not there.

Arteta on Partey's injury
Yeah he felt something and we didn’t want to take any risks so he could not continue

He felt something in his ribs, not in his legs where his long term injuries have come before. In theory he should be fine and not out for a long time. 8 days until the next game.

Never want to lose but overall a good night I'd say. Out of a meaningless distraction competition (compared to trying to win the league after 20 years) without any great loss or morale.

Full strength City scrape past Arsenal B-team, if that doesn't show how much the gap has closed I don't know what will. That should be the message Arteta is driving home to the team. At the Etihad last season we lost 5-0.

I've seen enough from tonight to be confident we can beat these lot at the Emirates on Feb 15. They're not the City of old. Saliba and Gabriel handled Haaland very well, and with Zinchenko back and Odegaard's pressing from the front we will control the midfield. Martinelli had Walker on strings. Even playing on the counter with 0 buildup from the back and just kicking it long to Eddie in the first half, we were dangerous and close to scoring on many occasions. Imagine how we can cut through them at full strength with full fluidity. With the crowd behind us, we'll be too good for them.

Arsenal are set to make an improved offer for Moises Caicedo after Brighton rejected an opening bif of £60m for the 21-year-old Ecuadorian midfielder, who says he wants to leave the Seagulls. (Telegraph)

Tierney is injury prone, not suited to Arteta ball

Tomiyasu is injury prone and limited attacking wise.

Kiwior, it is his secondary role.

Mikel Arteta was keen to highlight that Arsenal played with 10 men in their two defeats by Manchester City last season after he was reminded about their losing run against Pep Guardiola's side.

The Spaniard returned to the Etihad Stadium, the ground he once called home, with his Gunners outfit in sensational form, but their FA Cup hopes were ended by Nathan Ake's second-half goal. It means the north Londoners have lost six on the bounce against the reigning English champions.

Their two defeats last term - 5-0 on the road and 2-1 at Emirates Stadium - each came after Arsenal experienced a sending-off. Arteta, who is trying to hold off Guardiola in the Premier League title race, made light of their losing run against the Manchester outfit ahead of the rivalry's renewal in the top flight next month.

When quizzed on the subject, he told ITV : "We are closer [to City] and in the last two games, we played 94 minutes with 10 men, so that's a little bit difficult."

Granit Xhaka was the man sent off at the Etihad last term before Gabriel was given his marching orders in the defeat in the return fixture. Arsenal saw off Manchester United last weekend to cement their place at the top of the league, but their much-changed side couldn't continue that momentum on Friday night.

Arteta threw on a host of his big names, including Gabriel Martinelli and Martin Odegaard, as he sought an equaliser. However, he bemoaned the manner in which his side lost against their rivals.

He added: "[I am] Really disappointed. I think we could have got much more out of the game. The action decided the game but it was a tight game and that one action changed it all. I think we could have dealt with it much better in terms of our discipline when the ball was in the box.

"We had big situations in the game and we didn't put them away. We can take a lot of positives. I think the way we approached the game and competed. It is really difficult to win against this team, but we went head to head with them. In the big moments, in big matches, you have the make the difference. That is how you win these games."

Arsenal will host City in mid-February in a game that could have huge ramifications when it comes to the destination of the Premier League trophy. The sides still have to play each other twice after their scheduled game earlier this season was postponed.

Arteta also refused to comment on speculation surrounding Gabriel Martinelli, who is rumoured to have signed a new long-term deal. "I don't talk about anything regarding our players until it is done," he added.

Brighton has no intentions to sell and have informed Arsenal. It is upto Arsenal to stop fooling around and be decisive be it Caicedo or someone else. I sincerely hope they have plan B. "We have Sambi " statement from Arteta after yesterdays match is giving me jitters.

Both teams not full throttle, this tie was a distraction as they look towards the battles ahead for the title.

Playing well vs City and not winning or even scoring is a habit we need to get out of. We have lost 13 out of last 14 games against them, including 6 defeats in a row.

City have turned up to the Emirates most games and have won without breaking sweat. Some fans getting carried away because we had 1 good 1st half against City last season. Spurs did the double over City last year and other teams in last 4 or 5 years have won games and scored vs City.

The game in February we need to be clinical in front of goal, as the game will be a cagey and tight one, we can't be niave either. The bare minimum we need to take from game is a point. All his we played well and lost is not an achievement.

Brighton has no intentions to sell and have informed Arsenal. It is upto Arsenal to stop fooling around and be decisive be it Caicedo or someone else. I sincerely hope they have plan B. "We have Sambi " statement from Arteta after yesterdays match is giving me jitters.

Yeah the backing of mediocre players like lakonga, holding is a worry.

Also fact the club for 2nd TW running is chasing a midfielder in panic mode at end of window is pathetic. Samba n elneny are mediocre and praying partey stays fit n xhaka does get red cards was always a huge worry.

Brighton are determined to keep Caicedo until the end of this season. I can't see them budging on this one. They won't let another key player move out in this transfer window.

Arsenal should target Zubamendi. If he's open to joining us, we just need to activate his release clause of £52m. The other option is buy Onana.

Leaving things till end of window always causes following issues

- team reluctant to sell so late, as zero time to get replacement in
- selling team hikes price up

Edu and Co can't spend ages now with stupid offers, poor paymen lt structure etc.

They will end up having to overpay for a player and that's clubs fault for usual poor transfer tactics in market.

Zubimendi case is opposite to Caicedo i believe. Clubs are ready but player is not willing to join until summer.

Brighton have all the power here, don't think Caicedo will be leaving this window. Need to panic buy someone else now.

Brighton want time to get replacement in and after oxlade chamberlain. We should just give them lakonga

Initial reports coming in saying Partey injury is not serious and he could be ready for Everton. You never know, it could be a tactic so that Arsenal does not look desperate in the transfer mkt.

Are things so fragile that one buy failure can kill our PL win chances?
