Arsenal FC | 2022/23 Season

What about William Saliba?

That was a stunning, 10/10 performance. MOTM for me. Every time the ball came near him, he won it. Intercepting, winning a 50/50, dispossessing every player that dared to take him on with ridiculous ease. He just makes it look so simple.

The courage and composure on the ball to dribble and turn out of tough situations, even around his own box.

21 years old. I am convinced this kid is seriously special. Give him whatever he wants or we will regret it.

Saliba was outstanding again, as was Ben white at RB, Saliba will become world class.

Gabriel needs to cut out his stupid mistakes, half the goals weve conceeded this season have been his fault, another stupid rash tackle today.

I start to wonder whether we bring a specialist full back (Tomi or Tierney) at RB and switch Ben White for Gabriel. What do you think?

I've lost confidence in Gabriel especially in big matches.

The modern day building up from the back requires a left-footed LCB and right-footed RCB. This is has been Arteta's desire since he got here and the reason why he signed the likes of Mari and Gabriel.

I agree he is the weak link of the back line.

We took zero points of liverpool and city last season. That has to change especially at home this season.

We failed to score in all 4 games vs liverpool last season (failed to score against them in last 6 games all competitions)

1 PL win in last 14 league games vs liverpool.

This game will tell us more then spurs one if we have improved from last season.

Arsenal have obviously and clearly improved from last season, regardless of results against Liverpool and City. Our downfall last season was not results against the top 2, it was dropped points against the likes of Brentford, Palace, Burnley, Everton, Brighton, Southampton, Newcastle.

We got 18 from a possible 42 points against the 7 teams I mentioned above last season. Dropped 24 points against them. And missed top 4 by 2 points.

Already from these 8 games we can see it's going to be a different story. We have already dominated the 2 hardest away games of those 7 teams, fixtures that we lost 2-0 and 3-0 last season.

Even this Spurs win was different to last year's. Instead of doing it against a clueless Nuno who played without a midfield, we handed a spanking (and their first of the season) to one of the most revered managers of world football who had just humiliated us a few months ago. All the positive talk of Spurs and Conte has disintegrated due to the nature of our domination.

The impact of the introductions of Saliba, Jesus and Zinchenko as well as the levels gone up from White, Xhaka, Martinelli to name a few are clear for all to see.

Still, now is a better chance than ever to defeat Liverpool, especially as we are playing on such a high. I would be disappointed should we not do so. However, not doing so doesn't prove anything.

we took zero points from liverpool / city and scored 1 goal.

Spurs took 8 points from liverpool / city and didnt lose. That was difference on why top 4 wasnt made.

Arsenals record vs liverpool / man city recently is embarrassing. Yes they are a better sides but the fact we struggle to even score a goal against them let alone be competitive is shameful. fans grtting over excited because we had 1 good 45 mins against them last season.

1 win in 14 PL games vs liverpool.

Vs man city lost last 10 PL games in a row and scored just 3 goals.

thats shameful to say the least. so yes games vs liverpool and city are a yardstick of whether we have improved or not. there should be no excuses not to take points or score goals in home games.

After spending nearly 400M we should see an improvement. losing 13 games two seasons running is shameful and not acceptable, beating palace / brentford was good but should be expected 3 years into a project. Top 4 is minimum now and competitive cup runs, not the shameful cup exits we have had over last 2 years.

we won 3 out of 10 games vs Top 6 last season, so it was just dropping points vs lesser teams. we lost 13 games last season that was the issue, but people ignore it protect the novice manager who bottled top 4 last season.

We beat spurs pretty much every season at the emirates, thats why they have 1 win in last 30 games at the emirates. Does not matter what manager is in charge of spurs they get slapped. so judging how we do against Spurs is not any yardstick of team improvement.

Liverpool and City have been best 2 sides in last 5 season in PL and apart from one win over liverpool (after they had won the league) we have looked inept and impotent as a team.

The so called process / project aim is to eventually win trophies again and regularly qualify for CL.

After a managers been in charge for 3 years he should be delivering. The fact we havent even looked like scoring against either side. Most other teams have managed goals and points against city/liverpool in last 5 years.

So with home advantage on sunday there should be no excuse for team firing blanks or an inept performance.

As good as Jesus, zinchenko and saliba have been, this will be the yard stick of how far or close we are to competing as a top club again.

looks like Saka will sign a new contract, hopefully Saliba and Martinelli will as well.

In regards to looking at new wingers Arsenal should look at Napolis - Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.

The guys looks amazing.

Good chance for fringe players to perform tonight.

Arteta: We can do things much better

Despite extending their winning run to four games, keeping a clean sheet and maintaining their 100 per cent record in Europe this season, Arteta believes his side still need to improve in many areas in order to control games.

Arteta claimed the triple introduction of Saka-Odegaard-Jesus at the start of the second half was mainly down to managing the minutes of his players rather than a poor spell, but the Spaniard did identify a lack of composure in his side's performance.

"There's still a lot of things we can do collectively better, we need to keep the standards as high as possible and raise the next level," Arteta said in his post-match press conference.

"We had spells that were too rushed, didn't win enough duels and didn't manage the ball and win it back well enough. It became really open with a lot of transitions. When the game is in your hands you have to manage it much better.

"We have to put 10-15 passes together enough times to get more in the final third. We were really effective in the final third, we looked a threat. But in terms of composure, the timing between the units, maybe because they haven't played enough together, was lacking a little bit. In football, five minutes is everything"

Didn't they win their league and also suprised Spurs a couple of seasons ago?

They beat Roma and also drew in group stages of conference league.

Roma did beat them later on in knock out stages (home and away)

Tough game vs liverpool on sunday. no excuses not to start taking points of Liverpool or city this season, especially at home.

We have struggled to even score goals against either side recently.

Having jesus in side should hopefully change that. look at small teams like Brighton who have taken points regularly of liverpool in last few seasons (at Anfield as well).

Fabio Vieira is the one fringe player who looks good enough to push for a long term starting X1 first team place, looks similar quality to players in 1st team.

Sadly player like lakonga need to be sent on loan or even sold. simply not good enough.

Arteta excited by Liverpool test | ‘We can get better’

Mikel Arteta has challenged his Arsenal side to show they have raised their level when they face Liverpool at the Emirates Stadium on Super Sunday.

"It is a really exciting game against one of the top opponents in this league,” he said. “It will be a really demanding match that is going to require us to be at our best.

"It is a fixture that everybody is looking for against an opponent that has shown the level they have in the last five and six years.

"We have to show we have raised our level and are able to compete."

Arsenal sit top of the Premier League having taken 21 points from a possible 24 this season but Arteta believes there is plenty more to come.

"I am very conscious that we can get much better than where we are today and we have to do better to be the team we want to be and the challenge is to be able to do that every three days,” he said.

"You always see the weaknesses you want to improve."

Win tomorrow vs liverpool and it city beat them as well could put Arsenal in a huge points gap over liverpool and would be one less side to worry about in top 4 race.

Arsenal need to be ruthless tomorrow.

It means we will have Tottenham and Liverpool away back to back next half

Let’s do our best to stay as far ahead as we can before we play these difficult away games in the crunch half of the season

At the world cup break we will have played only 13 PL games, by end of december 15 games.

So only really a 1/3 of season and teams will be able to strengthen in transfer window.

Yeah its important Arsenal get as many points as possible by the mid season break but also strengthen in jan.

We play Spurs, united and newcastle in January so Edu needs to have any transfers done as soon as window opens and none of this bidding on last day of window nonsense. Arsenal bottled top 4 last season based off a poor january and TW, cant have same problems again.

Yeah we will have some very tough away games in 2nd half of season, plus hopefully latter stages of EL as well, so points on board now is going to be important.

Bro just give him some credit for once :))

Don't forget, Martinelli, Vieira, Xhaka, Marquinhos Tierney, Gabriel and Tommi were all starting as well. He did good man.

Europa league is for fringe players to push for 1st team spot. Out of all the fringe players the one who looks way better then everyone else is Vieira. He looks ready to step up when required.

Nkeitah always looks good in europa league, league cup and FA cup.

On flip side lakonga was poor once again. hes not the level required to step in if partey or xhaka is missing.

we need a new midfielder in january and in the summer.

Agreed and it looks like Locatelli might be coming to Arsenal to replace him.

We need to come out in the first 20 minutes against Liverpool and blow them out the water with intensity and high energy. The crowd will be raucous so hopefully the players will feed off it.

Martinelli vs Trent, Jesus vs VVD, Partey Xhaka and Odegaard running the midfield, the blueprint is there to beat this shaky Liverpool team.

If we can take a lead in the first 20 mins it would be perfect.

I think he needs to play more europa league and also league cup games 1st. Essentially hes seen as saka back up right now and we cant afford a saka injury.

Liverpool have had a habit of slow starts this season and conceding 1st, so we need to add to their misery. Should be no excuses not to score or take points off them today. We need to expose their gaps on right side.

Their midfield as well is the weakest it's been in a long while. The likes of Henderson and Fabinho look so off it this season, we need Partey Xhaka Zinchenko to bully them like how Brighton's midfield did.

Liverpools midfield is weakest it has been in ages, but going forward liverpool will just by pass the midfield by going long into the channels; TAA and Van Dyyk will play long balls around full back areas. Tierney has a habit of vacating space and gabriel has been poor on left side. We will need to cut out tje sloppy defending today.

As much as want us to win as i hate the scousers, i can see this being a 2-2 draw.

Interesting lineups. Liverpool go with 4 attackers at the expense of a midfielder, like they did against Rangers, which meant Trent was told to stay back and more defensive.

And with Zinchenko unavailable, Arteta opts for Tomiyasu at LB. Can't complain really, he is two-footed and supreme defensively, I would have been happy with him or Tierney there.

Put Martinelli in Odegaard’s position and watch him run riot!

£100m player!

2-1 HT

2 excellent goals, in between we have been poor and letting liverpool have control in midfield. thank god we got that goal before HT.

Need to stop giving Thiago time on ball.

Martinelli, what a player. Liverpool are still such a good team with amazing attackers, making these counter attacks count is so important, like what United did to us.

We need to be braver on the ball in the second half and take more possession, play more of that enterprising football that we've played this season. I'm sure Arteta will be drilling that into them.

We defo need to keep ball better in midfield, i said before the game liverpool would by pass are midfield with long balls and they have had joy doing that. we need to keep the ball and pass it around and take advantage of 3 vs 2 in midfield with jota being so far forward.

oddegaard misses a great chance and liverpool punish us.

poor defending on both goals.

yes finally we beat liverpool. i can now rub it in all liverpool fans faces :)))

Bukayo Saka's penalty settled a thrilling encounter and put Arsenal back on top of the Premier League with victory over Liverpool at Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal got off to a perfect start when Gabriel Martinelli put them ahead after 58 seconds but Liverpool responded well and striker Darwin Nunez deservedly got them level when he slid home Luis Diaz's cross after 34 minutes.

Saka restored Arsenal's lead in first-half added time after Martinelli broke clear on the counter-attack only for Liverpool to level once more eight minutes after the break when substitute Roberto Firmino, on for the injured Diaz, fired beyond keeper Aaron Ramsdale.

Liverpool, who felt they were denied a penalty when defender Gabriel handled in the first half, felt a further sense of injustice when Thiago Alcantara was penalised for a challenge on Gabriel Jesus with 14 minutes remaining, with Saka coolly converting from the spot.

This Arsenal team has title winning mentality. Probably not this season because there isn’t enough depth and City are incredible, but surely it seems like around the corner.

It is crucial to secure the core of this team on long-term deals. Having said that, Arteta needs to sort out the Gabriel situation.

He has been at the heart of every Arsenal defensive mistake this season. If he continues like this sooner or later he is going to cost several points. He was also very lucky not to concede a penalty.

We came out in that 2nd half on fire and dominated them. They got a goal out of nothing because the quality of their attackers are so high, but we just went straight back to dominating. Got that well deserved winning goal and grinded out the result.

Even when defending a result for the last 15/20 we still had more shots than them, and far higher quality chances. XG of 3.03 vs Liverpool's 0.87.

COYG

Defensively we were niave and poor. We lacked control in midfield in 1st half.

Thank god going forward we were brilliant. A decent performance main thing was 3 points.

I think Odegaard is very intelligent and creative but he is a tad slow for world class defences. I can see why Real Madrid didn’t keep him after unearthing.

Arsenal need a faster and more direct player in that position and that’s why I feel Martinelli should play there. He is the real deal!

Gabriel or Ramsdale have pretty much been at fault for most of goals weve conceded. Ramsdale has been excellent otherwise, Gabriel does need to be dropped.

Arsenal forward Bukayo Saka said: "In the past two or three years, Liverpool have been a team we have struggled against. To win in front of our fans is special and it shows how much we are progressing.

"It gives us more confidence because they are a fantastic team and we have a lot of respect for them. I feel like we deserved to lead at half-time so to get that goal was crucial. I want to score more now."

On his winning penalty: "I had what I was going to do in my mind and I stuck with it."

'We need to believe and go game by game'

Speaking to Sky Sports, Arsenal forward Gabriel Martinelli said: "It means a lot for us. We have been working hard and we deserve the win and we need to keep going because the season is long and we want to achieve good things. We are running for each other and we are a family, everyone is on their toes and we deserved the win.

"It doesn't matter your age, it's your heart and how much you want to achieve in football and life. That is the most important thing. We need to believe and go game by game trying to win all of them."

Odeguard was superb.

So glad that the pundits are saying the same...
Best to listen to the experts

We almost certainly won’t win at Anfield if we are not clinical enough in front of goal.

I dont think this Team is at a level yet to go and win away to spurs, Liverpool or city.

The defensive mistakes need to be cut out and better control in midfield.

We should be able to take points off everyone at Home. If we can halve the 9 away defeats this season we should finally make top 4.

The mind boggles why Martinelli is not given a more central position…

Entire midfield 3 were poor in 1st half, they clearly got a rocket from manager at HT and actually kept the ball better in 2nd half.

Both here and in united game at times we are giving opposition midfielders to much time on ball. At OT it was eriksen, and 1st half was with Thiago.

Midfield needs additional quality added in january and the summer.

Hes best on wing where he can drive and create space, plus he sent TAA into retirement.

Odeguard provided the first goal.
His transition play was superb throughout the game.
A lot of our first half play was through the left side and Sakha was almost non existent other then his pass to Odeguard for the first goal and then scoring our second goal.

Second half we definitely played more through the right side.
This was a tactical change and Arteta should get a lot of credit for this.

For now we keep going.

The assist for goal was good, but then we sat back and just invite pressure which was stupid. Same thing happened in games last season as well. Partey n xhaka were static and slow and we should have over run liverpool in 1st half, they had 2 in midfield and niether could run..We should have just passed them into submission.

The goal before half time was huge as liverpool had control most of 1st half as game went on.

2nd half seemed to be conscious effort to move the ball quicker and take advantage of extra man in middle. The way liverpool play we at times allowed Van dykk and Thiago to be able to play balls into channels for their front 4, this was always there game plan. wr should have pressed them into submission like they have done to others down years.

Are play down both wings was good. Tomi and White were excellent.

By moving him into a more central position, you are depriving him of his biggest strength: running at full-backs, dragging them out of position and opening spaces for others. Also, you are exposing his biggest weakness: decision-making in the final third.

He is not very decisive when it comes to picking the right pass and picking the right shot. He has a long way to go before he is ready to play a more central role. You can play him as a number 9 but never as a number 10.

So looking forward to being in the away end at the Emirates Airlines Stadium, whatever its called.

Oct 9th LFC will bring this lot down to Earth if they aren't already by then.

Villa deserved a point today.

:)) did you enjoy your Midtable relegation threatened team get put in its place today? :)))

Salah retired After new contract.
TAA retired at HT during Arsenal game.
Klopp to be sacked after man city game next week, good times 😂

See I didn't see it like that in the first half.
They may have been playing two in midfield but Salah, Joyta and Nunez were dropping back into the midfield and matching us man for man... it took them 15-20 minutes to do this consistently but that's what brought about the change is momentum.

We're feared their front three (front four) and didn't want ti get countered or be done by a long ball over the top. So we did sit back a little, hoping to counter them.

In the second half we played more like we have been doing with Odeguard and Sakha coming into it more on the attacking front and we played with less fear.

The first goal came from a Gabriel error and this is something he has to work on otherwise he'll either be on the bench next season or sold to Lyon or Marseille...
