What's new

Arsenal FC | 2022/23 Season

Very very very lucky win Arsenal, congrats.

Arsenal (3.03) 3-2 (0.87) Liverpool

Liverpool scored 2 goals just from 0.87xG and you want to say Arsenal were lucky? We deserved the 3 goals, we thoroughly deserved the win.

Criticism of Gabriel is OTT this match. He did make a couple of small errors but no more or less than Saliba did. The first goal he missed the ball over the top but it's a tough one to bring down over your head, and Saliba could've done more to stop the cross, it went through his legs.

The 2nd goal Saliba got caught in no man's land chasing ghosts without realising Firmino had made a run into the space he vacated.

And did anyone else notice Gabriel's dummy for Arsenal's 2nd goal? He let the ball through his legs, fooling both Allisson and Tsimikas, to give Saka an open net to place in to, Ozil-esque.

I agree generally he's the weak link but he wasn't as costly as people made out today. His aggression in duels was very useful against their front 4.

It was Liverpool's lowest xG all season.

Exactly.

I must say… Credit to Arteta for placing Tomiyasu at LB. Proved to be a great tactical decision. His first full game and had Salah in his pocket.

Ben White another fine signing. He quietly comes in, performs and does his thing. Just how Sagna use to do without pundits realising. Underrated.

Having Tomi and White at the full-back positions was especially valuable because of just how good they are in the air (especially Tomi). The classic Van Dijk or Thiago cross-field switch to the winger was nullified by our full backs, Tomi must have won at least 3 or 4 of those headers intercepting those balls.

I was at the game earlier today, sat at the North Bank and the atmosphere today was amazing.

It was a nerve racking game but we did enough to seal the 3 points.

I start to wonder whether we bring a specialist full back (Tomi or Tierney) at RB and switch Ben White for Gabriel. What do you think?

I've lost confidence in Gabriel especially in big matches.

This Arsenal team has title winning mentality. Probably not this season because there isn’t enough depth and City are incredible, but surely it seems like around the corner.

It is crucial to secure the core of this team on long-term deals. Having said that, Arteta needs to sort out the Gabriel situation.

He has been at the heart of every Arsenal defensive mistake this season. If he continues like this sooner or later he is going to cost several points. He was also very lucky not to concede a penalty.

Fully agree with this, especially in re: Gabriel. It's what I've been saying since last season. He will cost us points, it's just a matter of time. Arteta needs to bench him.

I want to see what White can do at LCB.

So looking forward to being in the away end at the Emirates Airlines Stadium, whatever its called.

Oct 9th LFC will bring this lot down to Earth if they aren't already by then
.

Villa deserved a point today.

Hope you had a good time at the away end.

Certainly brought us lot down to Earth.

:)) :))

See I didn't see it like that in the first half.
They may have been playing two in midfield but Salah, Joyta and Nunez were dropping back into the midfield and matching us man for man... it took them 15-20 minutes to do this consistently but that's what brought about the change is momentum.

We're feared their front three (front four) and didn't want ti get countered or be done by a long ball over the top. So we did sit back a little, hoping to counter them.

In the second half we played more like we have been doing with Odeguard and Sakha coming into it more on the attacking front and we played with less fear.

The first goal came from a Gabriel error and this is something he has to work on otherwise he'll either be on the bench next season or sold to Lyon or Marseille...

I understand there was a fear of the front 3 or 4 doing damage on the counter, but not pressing in 1st half and playing with a high defensively line was tactically poor, if your not going to press and win ball back, dont let teams knock long balls into huge amounts of space when attackers then have an advantage of running in that direction and defenders are on the turn, liverpool got in at least 4 times that way. If you look at 2nd half defensively we dropped back 5 yards and then started pressing and were way more comfortable, was good to see tweaks were made at HT.

Next 5 fixtures up to World cup break
Leeds (A)
Southampton (A)
Forrest (H)
Chelsea (A)
Wolves (A)

4 Away games and are away for in last 6 years is why we havent made top 4 (we did win 3 out those 4 away games last season though). if man united and chelsea win games in hand the gap between top 5 is just 6 points. Arsenal pretty much need to be looking to come through these 5 games unbeaten with 13-15 points. We will have played 14 PL games by world cup break, still 2/3rds of season left and a lot of clubs i can see will strengthen in january for once with season split like it is. Edu needs to do his job and identify noe who they wznt to come in January (and get any squad additions early, none of this bidding on last day of window rubbish. (we play united / Spurs / newcastle all in january). So team needs to be prepared unlike last season.

Gabriel is making a mistake almost every game at the moment no wonder we arent keeping clean sheets in home games.

Why was even trying to take the ball down in that position, he should have kicked the ball out for a throw in. He has a habit of these stupid lapses and hes been pretty average all season. Yes Saliba has made a mistake for 2nd goal but in general hes been our best defender all season. We cant afford to be gifting goals away in big games, we did it vs united, spurs and now liverpool.

Saliba already looks world class at his age. Gabriel looks decent at best, reminds me koscielny where at times he looks good but always a mistake in him.

Luckily we got away with mistakes in this game.

I want to see what White can do at LCB.

White has been tremendous at RB. Yet another example of how brilliant Arteta is. Most coaches would have benched him but he knew that Arsenal needed his character and work rate.

He has made this position his own. Tomiyasu was brilliant but Arsenal need Zinchenko back. His calmness on the ball and his passing ability are vital. He is extremely intelligent.

Tomiyasu is such a natural defender. I think he can easy slot in as LCB and do a tremendous job. Certainly better what Gabriel has done this season.

I like Tierney but I feel this will be his last season at the club. He is injury prone but when he is fit, he is too good to be on the bench at Arsenal when he could be starting at most other PL clubs. Unfortunately for him, Arsenal have better options in his position.

To be fair, apart from his errors, Gabriel has played well this season. However, defending like goalkeeping is a bit of a thankless job because one glaring error can undo all your good work.

Gabriel has made a glaring error almost every game. He is one of these defenders who are good but also clumsy. For example, he had no reason to have left hand leave his side and that should have been a penalty.

Nunez’s goal also happened because he panicked. He lacks composure in those key moments that Saliba, White and Tomiyasu do not.

With Zinchenko back, I would like Arteta to try Tomiyasu in the center. He has everything in his locker to be a quality CB. He is too good a defender to be left on the bench.

Very fine start from Arsenal this season. Let's see if they can make the no.2 spot at the end of the season as I think City with their massive squad will be tough in the end.

On yesterday's match the injury of Luiz Diaz really made things difficult for L'pool. Had he stayed on we might have seen a different result for he looked awesome. But congrats to Gunners.

Thats like saying apart from Maguire making errors all time hes played well. Gabriel has been average at best this season, You cant keep giving goals away and expecting rest of team to dig you out.

You don’t know anything about football so it difficult to explain this to you.

Maguire is generally an inept defender. He is slow, indecisive and poor on the ball. Gabriel is one of these defenders who are excellent apart from one or two moments where they do something stupid.

He is a bit like Sergio Ramos. Not comparing the two because Ramos is a legend, but he is also a rash defender who is never far away from doing something reckless.

Gabriel has everything in his locker. He is fast, strong, good on the ball. If Arteta can work on his concentration, he will be a world class defender.

For now, I think he needs some time on the bench. It could do a lot of good for him.

At some point we will have to toughen up and beat City, Chelsea, Liverpool and Tottenham away from home.

United opportunity is gone now but we cannot drop points to them at home in the second half

You need that variety in a CB-pairing, Saliba the calm, composed, graceful one who is usually more conservative in defending, contrasted with Gabriel who is tasked with being aggressive, pressing up high against the forwards and not giving them any freedom. The role Gabriel has to play is intrinsically riskier than the one Saliba plays, which is reflected in the error count, but both are equally important.

Of course he needs to cut out the errors in his game, especially inside the box, as they have cost us this season, but they did not in this match for the reasons I stated.

Regarding the handball, it wasn't a penalty.

"An arm extended away from the body makes that body bigger, in an unnatural position," explains Mike Riley, Managing Director of Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL), the referees' body.

"If the ball strikes that arm, particularly if it is blocking a shot on goal, there is a greater likelihood we will penalise that."

The proximity of the player whose hand or arm makes contact with the ball to where the ball was struck from will still be an important consideration for officials when making a decision to award handball or not.

His arm was in an unnatural position but Jota smashed it at him from a metre away, thus the proximity was the deciding factor. If it had been a shot on goal, perhaps a different story, but it was a cross. By the rulebook it wasn't a penalty.

Some people are getting carried away thinking we are now dead certs for top 4 and manager has proved himself. Chelsea / united win games in hand and gap 1st to 5th is 6 points.

if Arsenal have ambition there aim should be
- Top 4 this season
- in a title race next season and do well in CL
- aim win title or CL season after

thats long term success and actually proves this so called process / manager have done their jobs.

Yeah we will have to pick up points in all those away games and newcastle away as well. The quicker we get to 70+ points if we can the better. something we have achieved for 4 seasons.

We are not man

I’m pleasantly surprised we have actually done so well and have made big improvements since Wenger lost his way with gaurentee top 4…and at least we are putting to bed away games against lower table/mid table sides which was seriously lacking. However the performance by Liverpool should be the indicator of what is usually required when playing title contenders or CL performers on the road.

Arsenal should have dominated as it’s their home but Liverpool were never out of it and certainly never out of at least picking up a point.

Arsenal on the other hand have just traveled to City and Anfeild like a Deliveroo meal waiting to be eaten up alive.

By the looks of it, we could lose space of 6-9 points in no time in the second half considering the magnitude of away games and especially those that are back to back

You are right about the tough away games vs big sides which will determine where we eventually finish.

If you look at April to may Fixtures that will make for break season so its so important to get points on board now while in form.

Apr 8 - liverpool (A)
Apr 15 - West ham (A)
Apr 22 - Southampton (H)
Apr 26 - Man city (A)
Apr 29 - Chelsea (H)
May 6 - Newcastle (A)

Big big test

Arsenal better have the cheque book ready and the scouts on red alert right now. I’m not convinced with Odegaard. He is one vital position where we can add a more dynamic threat. Partey and Xhaka are doing well but you just never know with Xhaka and his recklessness. He is one stupid move away every game for a red card. He could have got one in the last game and that too after Arsenal had won a penalty!

Saliba has looked like VVD in his position, solid player!

Also remember the April / May will be latter stages of the europa league and FA cup if we are still in both as well.

We defo need at least 1 midfielder in january. Lakonga is not good enough, Eleneny is injured and was average at best anyways, the fact he replaced lakonga as 3rd choice last season shows how poor lakonga was. Also you take partey out of midfield and we look average.

look at liverpool now all because they neglected midfield signings.

we also need a right winger so that if saka is tired / out of form we have a like for like replacement, we went for Raphina and we should look at someone similar.

If we make CL next season the club should move away from looking at Luiz and Tielemens and make a statement, send a suitcase of cash to dortmund and try and get Bellingham.

Hope you had a good time at the away end.

Certainly brought us lot down to Earth.

:)) :))

Thankfully I didnt go in the end. :))

I watched the game.

We are still a better team than Arsenal, we had more of the ball, far better players.

Arsenal are in good form while our defence is all over the place. Those errors and a soft penalty gave you 3 points.

I think both teams will finish in the Top 4. You aint winning anything for many years. City will win the league, Utd prob the mickey mouse Europe cup. FA cup is your best chance.

LFC will be back next season to challenge for the title.

I wish I did as we could have bumped into each other although the chance of that happening would've been even more slim due to how yesterday panned out, as I'd imagine you'd be running out of the stadium to make the train in no time :))

Maybe one day bro, it would be great to meet you in person.

I always stay to the end unless we are losing very badly, which I cant recall since as a kid.

I think most Arsenal fans know they arent winning the league but its a good step forward. Top 4, buy some elite signings and you may get closer next year. But nobody is touching City for the next 3/4 years unless LFC show their form which isnt likley, as last season was one of the greatest in LFC history, missed the quad by possibly 2-3 goals.

Agreed!

It was a good game for the neutrals and a rare win for us after the dominance you've had over us during Klopp's reign.

I do feel for Klopp. Do you think he'll be sacked if City win on Sunday?

I agree City will win the title and by at least 12-15 points as well I reckon.

I could understand this sentiment in 2021 but he's doing amazing now and Arteta deserves full credit for that because he was on the verge of joining Roma during the August 2021 window.

Saliba on current form is best CB in the PL. We need to pay him whatever he wants in order to sign an extension.

No Klopp wont be sacked. There is always a few hardliners, wrist slitters but most LFC fans support Klopp. As I wrote our team hasnt just fallen apart, others have improved and our defending has been very poor. Once we sort the defence, it will be fine.

Imo Arsenal need to keep injury free now until the World Cup, so many matches in short time. If you can do this, top 4 will be almost a certainly.

City are on another level but I wont be surprised if we get a result against them as we are at home.

Brazil forward Gabriel Martinelli, 21, says he wants to sign a new long-term contract with Arsenal and is in talks about doubling his current wage of about £50,000 a week. (Times)

What a joke

He can get a £200k+ a week contract anywhere in Europe

Gabriel has been to blame for over half the goals conceeded this season. He made numerous stupid errors over last few seasons as well as same repeated stupid mistakes.

Red card vs southampton Dec 2020 got spun by walcott got for being over aggressive and cost us a goal. Then did same thing again and got 2 stupid yellow cards and sent off.

Same thing vs man city last season, on a yellow card and again trys to get to close to a striker, got spun and 2nd yellow and off.

He did same thing vs united at OT this season for 2nd goal got to tight to a striker and got spun and cost us a goal. same dumb mistakes.

hes a decent defender and hes not got everything as a defender, hes rash and clumsy.

I think Odegaard is very intelligent and creative but he is a tad slow for world class defences. I can see why Real Madrid didn’t keep him after unearthing.

Arsenal need a faster and more direct player in that position and that’s why I feel Martinelli should play there. He is the real deal!

Have a look at the 2nd goal on the re-run of the full match. Oddegard the man who runs around full of energy and leads the press is stood in the centre circle like its some of practise game. ball gets played into henderson and still oddegard just stands there a few yards away from him and just looks at henderson. No pressing, doesnt even try to apply pressure.

Henderson then plays ball to jota and Oddegard makes a half hearted jog back to try and win the ball.

Jota plays ball in firminho and he scores a goal because saliba went walk about.

This highlights your point about him being slow in midfield just passively stood there.

Yes his ball for goal in 1st min was great.

But him just standing around like a mannequin for liverpools 2nd goal was poor.

Arsenal have left Brazil striker Gabriel Jesus out of their squad for the Europa League game at Bodo/Glimt.

The 25-year-old has played all 11 games for the Gunners this season, scoring five goals and registering five assists.

Jesus also suffered a head injury in the 3-2 win over Liverpool on Sunday.

"We felt that with everything he's been through in the last few weeks that it would be better for him to stay at home," said Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta.

Jesus needed treatment against Liverpool when he was caught by defender Kostas Tsimikas.

On others who have not travelled to Norway, he added: "A few players that were injured. You will find out tomorrow [Thursday]."

Left-back Oleksandr Zinchenko (muscular) plus midfielders Emile Smith Rowe (groin) and Mohamed Elneny (hamstring) are all out.

'Arsenal need to keep doing what they're doing'

HT: Bodo/Glimt 0-1 Arsenal

Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown speaking to BT Sport at half-time:

"Defensively, Bodo/Glimt have come knocking but they just haven't been able to get their shot off.

"Arsenal need to keep doing what they're doing for another 45 minutes. If it's still 1-0 at full-time then I think Arsenal fans will still be happy.

"I'm expecting Martin Odegaard to be protected now because he did pick up that knock to his ankle and Bukayo Saka because we have a big game against Leeds on Sunday."

Glad saka has been subbed off, should have kept martinelli on bench as well.

Need to keep players fresh for leeds game.

Too many key Arsenal first teamers playing this game

They could have rested a few of them

Eddie, lakonga and Holding have been woeful tonight and this just highlights some of the poor back up players we have in some positions.

We really cant afford to have injuries to Saliba / partey or Jesus.

Thank god no one got injured. Fact players were risked shows lack of real depth in squad.

Arsenal took a big step towards qualifying for the Europa League knockout stage with a slender win at Bodo/Glimt.

The winner came after Bukayo Saka combined with impressive midfielder Albert Sambi Lokonga and his toe-poked effort hit a defender before ricocheting back off his chin and past the helpless goalkeeper.

Bodo/Glimt came into the game with a 14-game winning streak at home in Europe and they were spurred on by a boisterous crowd, but they were guilty of missing a number of clear-cut opportunities.

Amahl Pellegrino skewed wide when through on goal in the first half, while Runar Espejord placed over when eight yards out in the second.

It was far from vintage Arsenal on the artificial pitch in Norway, as shown by the fact they had to bring on Granit Xhaka and Gabriel Martinelli after an hour, but the result, combined with the fact he was able to rest key striker Gabriel Jesus and defender Gabriel, will delight manager Mikel Arteta.

The win leaves Arsenal five points clear of third-placed Bodo/Glimt, who have played a game more because the Gunners' fixture against PSV Eindhoven last month was postponed owing to policing issues following the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

The rearranged match with second-placed PSV takes place next Thursday, when a win will guarantee Arsenal's progression.

I can feel a glorified training session coming on Sunday. Arsenal are going to stroll past a fairly ordinary Leeds team, who have a lot of effort and heart but not much quality.

i think leeds as always are a danger coming forward so i think like the brentford away game if Arsenal control the midfield then they should get 3 points. what we dont need is a very open game and giving leeds chances. No complacency as well.

Arteta needs to forget about Europa and treat it like the league cup.

Arsenal no longer need to win this competition to get into the UCL. Top 4 position is guaranteed this season and he put all the team’s energies into finishing 2nd and pushing City all the way.

Cup competitions do not matter this season unless the reserve players can take Arsenal into the quarters and the semis.

Finishing second in the league even if no trophies are won would be a real power statement by Arsenal, and you can use the UCL money to strengthen the squad in the summer, tie the core on long-term contracts and seriously challenge for the league and UCL in the coming years.

Arteta needs to forget about Europa and treat it like the league cup.

The Kroenke's have nowhere to hide if Arsenal finish top 4. We will truly know how serious they are.

As a fan they have ****** me off. As a person who works in the corporate world, I get the logic of not investing heavily in a business that you don't completely own.

If we get Champions league, and they don't invest heavily, that means they are happy with Arsenal going back to how it was during Wenger's second half.

Arsenal are already investing quite a bit and you can see that Josh Kroenke is heavily involved and is passionate about making Arsenal a powerhouse.

Stan couldn’t care less, I agree with it, but I feel that the toxicity among the fans during Emery era and early days of Arteta’s reign gave Josh a wake up call of sorts.

i think leeds as always are a danger coming forward so i think like the brentford away game if Arsenal control the midfield then they should get 3 points. what we dont need is a very open game and giving leeds chances. No complacency as well.

I would bite your hand off for a point right now :P

100% spot on, "IF" Arsenal make top 4 we will see if Josh kronke was being honest about wanting to get Arsenal back to competing for titles.

Only reason they have invested in last 2 years is because the messed up the super league and also the fact clubs being made huge losses and that means kronkes investment is making a loss to.

You never know, Arsenals Achilles heel was away form last season and thats why im being cautious as 4 out of our next 5 games are away before WC break.

Also to add the kronked have never shown Ambition in the entire time Arsenal have been here when it comes to Arsenal being in a strong position in january.

Numerous seasons where clubs done well up until january and then needed that extra couple of quality players the kronkes have basically only really sanctioned mainly loans. even last season in january the club were more interested in the clubs wage bill then paying the asking fee for bruno gumaires. That was one of reasons we bottled top 4 due to poor jan TW.

so we will see if the kronkes show ambition in january if Arsenal are in top 3 spots in league.

Arsenal and France defender William Saliba, 21, is attracting interest from Paris St-Germain. (CBS Sport)

The big PP derby looms large - Arsenal going to Elland Road.

How do you see this one playing out James IAJ :)

This season has been frustrating so far, we have played well in many games and results could have been different, but we are not getting enough goals and some of the defenders are making basic mistakes which have punished us. And a match's duration is 90 minutes, not 45 minutes.

Liam Cooper is a real liability I feel, but he is the captain so he will play no matter what.

Usually when I have a had a good feeling before a match, we have lost, but now against league leaders no much hope, but we are playing at home and can all of the sudden bring out our A game like we did against Chelsea. Good to have Luis Sinisterra back as well. And hopefully Gnonto can get some minutes too.

Sinisterra definitely worries me. Hope our in-form full backs handle him well

This disruption is annoying. Hopefully the game resumes soon.

Trust Dirty leeds not to pay the electric bill at the ground.

That chance just going wide for leeds is an early warning for Arsenal.

Leeds have come out with a lot of intensity and energy. We are looking uncharacteristically sloppy. Just need to ride this period and stay composed.

We look a yard off pace and sloppy.

Ramsdales made a great save.

Jesus misses sitter at other end.

i said this game wouldnt be easy.

Phew - missed penalty by Bamford

Riding are luck here! poor 2nd half so far. midfield non existant

We will be ridiculously lucky to leave here with 3 points. We are getting battered.

Bamford is terrorising Saliba, the most uncomfortable he's looked all season. Ramsdale meanwhile is having his game of the season.

Saliba is going to end up with a red card here. already on a yellow.

midfield is bottling 50:50 tackles here aswell.

Always disappears as soon as game gets tough.

Game was tough in the 1st half, Leeds pressing and energy was brilliant then too and he marshalled the game. In the 2nd half the entire midfield and front line have disappeared.

Hang in there Arsenal

Doesn’t matter how they come, get the 3 points

Game is 90 mins not 45 mins, yes the entire front 6 have been poor in 2nd half. But midfield is where you get back control and weve been over run.

This will be a ugly 3 points if we get it.

Gabriel red card. liability as usual.

2nd penalty to leeds.
