What's new

Arsenal FC | 2022/23 Season

Sambi starts, no zinchenko. Lets hope no stupid red cards from xhaka as that would leave us with just 1 midfielder for next few games.

Go Jesus :D

Great goal Martinelli, but we need to stop giving stupid goals away at other end.

What they been feeding Eddie over the summer :)) completely different player.

5 out of 5 wins

Trust me, these wins will be vital for us to confirm top 4 this season!

Teams like Newcastle fighting tooth and nail for at least a point at Anfield whereas we have traditionally just turned up there to get rolled over!

Capitalising on the easiest run of games they could've wished for. Combined with Europa, this will definitely level out. Realistically need 9 wind out of the first ten and that just makes Top 4 possible.

Conceding at home to Villa and Fulham with supposedly a better defence. The emperor's new clothes per usual

Bro I told you how important he is to us and I'm glad you're finally seeing it.

Arteta made a blunder to play Laca ahead of him when Aubameyang was moved on to Barca.

Delighted with the win. Doesn't get better than win 5 games out of 5.

I hope Odegaard will be okay as he had to come off. Ramsdale was also struggling towards the end. Hopefully the duo will be fit for Old Trafford on Sunday.

This should serve the board as a wake up call for transfer deadline day tomorrow. We need more players.

So looking forward to being in the away end at the Emirates Airlines Stadium, whatever its called.

Oct 9th LFC will bring this lot down to Earth if they aren't already by then.

Villa deserved a point today.

We need a winger and midfielder before TW closes tomorrow.

Douglas luiz has 1 left on his contract and would cost around 20 mil from villa, PL proven, good DM and good at set pieces.

winger i think they should just pay cash for neto.

Same scoreline as yours and Newcastle are a better team.

Geordies were cheating, falling over with 1mph wind hit them. There should have been more time added imo.

Why would a Liverpool fan be bitter, have you been asleep last 4/5 years? :)

Im only mentioning Ill be at the 2nd best stadium in North London. Hope to see you there at the end when we teach you how to play football.

Please dont tell me like a few thousand Arsenal fans on social media, you dont believe you will win the PL?

Did you actually watch the game or even see the match stats?

If you did this is the last thing anyone would say.

I wasnt watching as Liverpool were playing.

I didnt mean Villa dominated but having equalised near 80 mins, reading how they worked hard, a point would be fair. But maybe they didnt..

Now tell me are Arsenal going to win the Premier League? :wenger

We were all over Villa and should have been 3 up by half time according to one of the BT commentators (not my words). In the second half we were just as dominant.

Only City is winning the PL this season. 99% of Arsenal fans would agree with that as well. I'm just hoping for top 4.

Now tell me are Liverpool still in the title race?

Not gonna lie, that was a p1ss take by the ref. If I was Eddie Howe, I'd be fuming.

Both my kids have watched very home game live this season and they tell me the atmosphere is something else this year... even when we concede the the atmosphere stays electric

Arsenal missed 2 open goals in the first half

This was my point about not dominating at home. We should be putting these games to bed as early as possible instead of dragging them out like this

Huge to go into Old Trafford on the back of 5 straight wins and sky high confidence.

Sadly our record at Old Trafford is terrible, and we somehow lost last year even while they were horrible and we were on a good run. Praying that doesn't happen again.

If the players can sustain this level and play the same football we've been playing, we will run rings around them. The only question is will they step up to the occasion.

Arsenal open to Deadline Day move for midfielder

Mikel Arteta says Arsenal's transfer business could go right down to the wire on Deadline Day as they look to add a central midfielder to their ranks, following injuries to Thomas Partey and Mohamed Elneny.

Albert Sambi Lokonga came into midfield to partner Granit Xhaka for Wednesday's 2-1 win over Aston Villa which keeps Arsenal top of the Premier League.

However, despite their perfect start of five wins from five, Arteta admits he is wary about his strength in depth in the middle of the park following a spate of injuries and says Arsenal could do a deal on Deadline Day if the right player becomes available.

"We are looking at options," said Arteta. "Obviously [Elneny's injury] has an impact because Thomas Partey is injured and we are a bit short in that position. We do have Albert Sambi Lokonga and Granit Xhaka who can play there.

"We are just looking at options in the market. As I said, the club has been super supportive to try to keep improving the squad and the team as we can, and if the right player is available and we can do it, we will try."

Arteta seemed particularly cautious of the busy schedule ahead for his squad, with a Europa League campaign added to their domestic commitments this season, on top of a winter World Cup.

"We were pretty protected in [central midfield] and now we are more exposed, but we have to be prepared for uncertainties, injuries and suspensions," he said. "Things like that can happen, especially this season it's going to be really strange with the World Cup. So, we try to prevent things but sometimes it is not easy."

When asked if there is much money left in the bank, he added: "I'm not a financial guy. I think that's a question for someone else."

I am seeing great improvements by the Arsenal. Where as they won't win the league finishing in the top four for next season is a dead cert. It is a different matter that even if they do they'll never win the UCL:46::46::43:

By the way liverpool aint improving on there 1 Title win in over 30 years this season either.

Read my posts and you will see ive said weve had an easy run of games.

United away and brentford away will be markers to see if this team has improved.

Yeah 100% we need to be winning these games 3-0 etc..

3rd league game at home in a row this season we have given sloppy needless goals away.

Has to be cut out..we cant afford mistakes like that on sunday.

Transfer deadline day

It’s really difficult to tell what Arsenal desperately need to ensure that they make it to the January Window still in a healthy position to secure top 4

I recon we snap up a washed up or on his last legs experienced CL winner DM if we can to shore up the defence

Maybe even Cristiano Ronaldo as a replacement to Martinelli and Saka if need be so

Looks like Douglas luiz from villa, linked to him before and he knows how to score at the emirates already ;)

Fabrizio reporting that Arsenal are discussing a £20m deal with Villa for Luiz. Personal terms agreed easily and he’s pushing to come. Villa about to sign Dendoncker from Wolves which should help close this deal.

Don’t know much about him to be honest, but from what I’ve heard it’d be an astute signing for good quality cover.

Can someone please explain how Man U are making £80m+ signings on a consistent basis for the past 4 years and are not being done by FFP regulations?

Some are implying that they will win it online and social media if not on this website. If you don't want to debate not argue then don't be here. There is no harm in believing in your side.

The Independent's Miguel Delaney says that Aston Villa want £40m from Arsenal for Brazilian midfielder Douglas Luiz.

He says that is double what Arsenal have offered.

if we end up short in midfield again and up front (no saka cover) and season ends in failure again both edu and arteta need to be sacked for making same mistakes 2 seasons running.

United look like they are stating to settle down now with the new Manager and new signings

Tottenham as usual breathing down our necks

City and Liverpool warming up for the title charge.

These 15 points will be crucial! Arsenal have a big big challenge this season and now it’s going to get very difficult

Arsenal have now made a 3rd bid for Douglas Ruiz for £25m. Lets hope its 3rd time lucky for us because we need more coverage in defensive midfield.

Looks like Saka is gonna have no cover on the right hand side. If this was going to be the plan all the way along, we shouldn't have let Pepe go. If Saka isn't available that's gonna have big impact on our creativity/goals going forward.

seems all this talk of mystery winger after not get raphina was just a lot of hype and rubbish info the club leaked to the media.

incompetence shown once again by Arteta and Edu.

Edu disaster class - clown needs to be sacked tomorrow.

Replaced Auba / Laca / Pepe with just jesus

Midfield is short so we loan AMN and Azeez out

well done for a mess once again

I'm slightly annoyed about how the transfer window has ended but this is a bit overboard.

Overall this has been a great transfer window for us.

The problem for Edu and Arteta is they were probably told by Kroenke that they needed to raise funds before they could buy anyone else and I'm sure they had to do a lot of persuasion to try and convince for them to more funds in order to sign Douglas Luiz.

Without the duo we wouldn't have been able to convince Jesus and Zinchenko to join. Remember they've just joined a Europa side after playing for the best team in the country for a number of years. They could have easily gone to play for CL sides like Chelsea etc.

The mistakes we've made are:

- Signing Fabio Vieira instead of Bissouma
- Not replacing Pepe

But otherwise it's been a great window for us. We're still in transition mode but have almost got rid off all our deadwood.

Aston Villa rejected three bids, including a final offer of £25m, from Arsenal for Brazil midfielder Douglas Luiz, 24, on deadline day. (Sky Sports)

So lets look the Douglas Luiz situation.

Player has 1 year on his contract, Probably worth 20-25M max in transfer market.

Arsenal then decide in their infinite wisdom to bid on the last day of TW - which gave them next to no power in bargaining in the negotiations.

1) Villa reluctant to sell so late in TW as they are struggling in league.
2 Villa know Arsenal are desperate of a DM as they have 2 players injured, so they bump price up (stories have it they wanted 35M-40M because Arsenal were desperate). Advantage Villa
3) If Villa sold player last night, they have zero time to get a replacement in, so why would they weaken themselves so late in window. Again Arsenal leaving bidding till last day made deal unlikely.
4) Arsenal didnt want to over spend / lack of funds. Well guess what if you leave things till last minute and come across to the selling club as desperate to want to buy a player you have zero bargaining power. Fail to prepare and prepare to fail.

Not for a second am i saying we should have paid 30-40M for such a player. But because Arsenal as usual left it till last minute, they got nothing.

Naive, Amateurish tactics in TW on last day.

same mistakes as January. When is Edu going to be made accountable for same useless tactics?

Before anyone mentions Thomas partey transfer, we paid a release clause. no negotiations were needed.

Idiots haven't got a recognised pivot, bid 25m for a Villa reserve and 80m Tieldmans ready to cash out at the same price. Wta

Start Jan 2022

Partey - Afcons
Elneny - Afcons
Xhaka - 4 Yellow cards in PL (1 card away from a ban)
Lakonga - 3 yellow cards in PL (2 cards away from a ban)
AMN (Roma loan)

Arsenal decided to take the risk of getting through Jan with just 2 fully fit CM options. what happens xhaka gets a stupid red card vs liverpool and leaving lakonga as only fit midfielder.

Now we get to this transfer window and we have 2 fully fit Midfielders and 2 out injured and again depending on same 2 players like january and hoping both stay on the pitch and not get injured or suspended.

Can anyone tell me how thats not **** poor squad management and incompetence.

So next up in the league its old Trafford? For me this will be the 1st gauge of whether we have improved from last season. We lost 9 games away from home last season (pretty much half of them) which is really not acceptable, neither was 13 league defeats. The overall number needs to be halved to around 6 or 7. The main reason we havent made CL in last 6 years has been the away form (last two times we have won the league we have lost zero away games). To many games where we have just got bullied into submission. United away last season we were the better side but gave away 3 goals and it was self inflicted defeat. our record at OT is pretty poor in the premier league

- 4 wins in 30 years all by a 1-0 scoreline
- 1 win in last 14 years
- last 6 wins at OT (PL and old 1st division) have been 1-0. quiz question name the 6 goal scorers, no using google please.
- we have never scored 3 goals at OT in the premier league
- Last win at OT by 2 goals in the league (PL and old 1st Division) was 2-0 in 1979.

no matter how poor united have been at times we struggle here.

Add to that the referee Salfords paul tierney the guy who done us over in man city and spurs games last season.

United will come out quick like they did vs Liverpool, we not only need to be ready, no complacency. We need to stop gifting goals away and be street smart as this referee wont heistate in doing us over on sunday.

Il happily take a point on sunday, i think we will and it will be 1-1.

Lol bro I clocked why you were so bitter about our win against Villa. It was against your hero Gerrard who's on the brink of getting sacked :))

Btw Villa's goal should not have stood as our keeper was impeded in the process.

Lol funny you're mocking Arsenal for last winning the league a long time ago. The only PL you won was during covid in front of an empty Anfield stadium hahaha.

Arsenal have won 3x as many PLs as Liverpool have so therefore no red scouser should be mocking Arsenal's recent past.

Scousers should focus on what they do best and it's not football. It's stealing car stereos and stabbing people. If you don't believe me, read the news.

lol. No not all, I dont take football of other team seriously at all, only banta bro. Not because of Stevie, scoring with 10 mins, some good defending and saves by the Keeper, draw would have been fair imo.

The goal was legit, you are allowed to use your arms , its a contact sport, as long as you dont use them to bring the player down in such a situation. Poor keeping.

I have nothing against the Gunners, was a big fan when you were good.

I just find it funny , there are a large proportion of fans who believe you will win the league, so only looking for predictions from Gunners fans on here.

What's yours?

History doesnt start at the PL. We are the most successful club in English history, its not a good argument to ever use this against the Mighty Reds.

We are still a far better team now, have been for years now.

lol. Using certain stats to claim Arsenal have a more prestigious history than LFC. You believe this or you are one of the presenters on AFTV. :)))

i was referring to the 2nd half of his post ;)

4th place.

Thank you.

I kind of agree and this would be a good step up from last season after a bottle job which let Spurs in.

My honest view is the way you are moving the ball with good pace between the lines is a huge improvement, its actually high quality football. If you can keep this going for another 45 odd games, you will win something for sure.

The problem is Thursdays. Arsenal dont have the squad quality to play both on Thurs and then in the most competitive league, injuries , fatigue are coming , there is no stopping this.

Its better not to be in Europe unless its Champions League.

My prediction.

Man City
LFC
Chelsea
Arsenal.

I've yet to come across one Arsenal fan who has claimed we'll win the league.

This is complete news to me even though I'm very active on social media and happen to interact with many Arsenal fans on forums, Twitter, Fb and Insta.

The only place I've come across this hyperbole is from 2 x Liverpool fans on PP, one of them being yourself and the other who's some random Indian pretending to be a Pakistani.

Tell me which "large proportion of Arsenal fans" has claimed that we're gonna win the league? Unverified social media accounts (for e.g. Twitter) don't count.

I've already answered this in post 340. Only City is winning the league this season.

I think we'll get top 4 as long as don't have a major injury crisis.

If you ask me who I think will miss out on top 4 from the big 6, I'd say Chelsea and Man U.

So you think top 4 finish for Arsenal this season? Why not the League, you are 5 in 5?

You don't understand Arsenal as well as you think you do if you're unironically saying most of us think we'll win the league :)))

Consensus among vast majority of fans (including me) is that we'll finish 3rd/4th. A small minority are more pessimistic than that due to lack of squad depth.

There is a fantastic vibe of positivity and excitement around Arsenal right now, to the point where Bournemouth away tickets are being resold for 4 figures, as fans are relieved to finally see a UCL quality team again. Every home game, even against relegation fodder, has raucous, excitable crowds.

We're just enjoying the ride of playing good football and winning consistently while it lasts, it's nothing more serious than that. Very few seriously believe we're in a title race.

Mikel Arteta: Disciplined Arsenal avoided repeat of panic signing mistake in on Deadline Day

Mikel Arteta insists Arsenal did everything in their power to make signings on Deadline Day, but stayed disciplined to avoid making costly panic signings.

The Gunners moved swiftly in the summer transfer window to bring Gabriel Jesus, Oleksandr Zinchenko, Fabio Vieira, Marquinhos and Matt Turner to the Emirates before the start of the 2022/23 Premier League season, but injuries forced them back into the market as the deadline loomed.

After seeing a third and final bid of £25m rejected by Aston Villa for midfielder Douglas Luiz, Arsenal concluded their summer business at five signings, with Arteta refusing to bring an unsuitable player to the club for the sake of it.

Speaking ahead of Arsenal's Super Sunday trip to Manchester United - live on Sky Sports - Arteta said of their fruitless attempts on Deadline Day: "Yesterday we could have done something if it was the right player, the right deal, and something we could afford.

"Sometimes you have to react to something that happens, we would have done that, it was a real possibility yesterday. We tried but then we kept the discipline to say it had to be the right player for the team and the club."

He continued: "We have done a lot of things and still have a lot to do in this squad, you see the amount of departures compared to the players we have recruited. The club has done a phenomenal job and put everything on the table to bring the profile of players we want.

"We did our business early, but unfortunately in the last 72 hours Thomas [Partey] got injured in the same place as last time and then Mo [Mohamed Elneny] has a long-term injury and we had to react in the market.

"We tried but at the end of the day we have to pick the right player we believe is right for the team and the club. We have learned a lot from that [signing the wrong player]. There are still players we have to get out.

"We only have to bring top quality talent, people through the door and have to be very disciplined because in those moments you can make huge mistakes that cost the club and the team a lot. We want to avoid that as much as possible.

"We pushed to strengthen the team and bring the best possible players to the football club. We managed that to a certain level. We had our limitations with time, we tried to act, but didn't find the right player."

See posts 340 and 382 for my prediction.

The first link is pure clickbait rubbish containing tweets from unverified Twitter accounts.

The second link is also clickbait but had you read the article, you wouldn't have posted it because it clearly states "One fan joked: "After the opening 5 minutes I can confirm we’re gonna win the league!"

So apart from one fan who appeared on AFTV, you have failed to come up with another verified Arsenal supporter who has predicted us to win the league :))

Which post did I write this? :wenger

Ive posted links to tabloids who also feel many Arsenal fans feel they will win the league.

Anyway its very boring talking to Arsenal fans. Ill return after my visit to the Emirates in Oct, not the best atmosphere for a stadium but worth the visit.

Exactly. I can promise you there are more Arsenal fans who think we'll miss out on top 4 than actually winning the league.

The 2 x Liverpool fans on here making up such rubbish are just insecure about our form and having to dish it out on us because of how badly they're playing.

They've realised they're already out of the title race. Sad times :sree

1-0 down at HT. Stupid goal given away.

Had 1 goal poorly disallowed. our midfield has been rubbish and dont know what oddegaard was doing in 1st half with that chance.

As usually a poor performance in a tough away game so far just like last season.

3-1 game over. Rashford again.

Midfield has been atrocious, left short in TW. Knew this would happen.

Lakonga was rubbish as was rest of midfield. Our defence and ramsdale were as well.

1st test of season failed.

Tactics: Whilst going forward today i think we were excellent and moved and kept the ball well and looked a threat all the time.

I understand without the ball we want to press, but are defensive high line needs to be looked at especially when we play teams playing on counter attack. Gabriel (hes not been great this season either) has quite a few times season made rash decisions to try and win the ball and be aggressive trying to win the ball high up the field, when he fails to do that it causes an issue when a striker gets ball and spins inside as our left back tends to bomb forward and vacate space and sambi doesnt slot into that empty space like Partey or xhaka would. United took advantage of that today. Teams like spurs etc. will look to do the same. defensively on left side we need to improve when we dont have the ball.

Agreed. He was responsible for the first 2 goals. His position and overall defending was poor. If we had partey or even Elneny, it wouldn't have been that easy for Man U.

But lets make no mistake, we got unlucky. We had a goal disallowed which was a very soft call. Man U got lucky 2 x through balls.

For the last goal we conceded, Arteta went all guns blazing. At 2-1 down, he was going for the win to keep the momentum and win streak going.

We were the better team. The stats prove that for sure. But we need more composure in the final third.

The decision to not secure a DM has cost us. Even if we didn't have the funds, we should have at least got Melo on loan (as [MENTION=131701]Mamoon[/MENTION] was saying) but he's now at Liverpool.

Having said that, we played well overall and the performance bodes well for the rest of the season.

I knew we'd lose to Man U before the game for the following reasons:

1. Our run was due to come to an end
2. Poor record at Old Trafford
3. Man U had a good run prior to this game
4. Injuries

So disappointed. We played so well for large parts of the game but lacked killer instinct. We are so technically and tactically brilliant to keep possession, play around the press and progress the ball to the final 3rd, but always in these big games our attackers lose their bottle to put the ball in the net. Then, stupid naive defending gives them 3 chances and 3 goals.

Improved performance, but same result again away to the big 6. Gutted.

Arsenal had the possession where as Man Utd got the goals. This doesn't make Arsenal a bad side or Man Utd a great one. Arsenal could have easily won this match had they been more clinical in front of goal. The Arsenal's target for this season is a top four finish. Anything else is a bonus for them yet there is nothing stopping them from trying to win it.
