Arsenal FC | 2022/23 Season

Are things so fragile that one buy failure can kill our PL win chances?

Based on the evidence from last season and also this season, unfortunately the answer to that is yes. Arsenal are a far inferior team without Partey because his backup options are a liability.

Lets start from yesterday's game against City, When Lakonga came on for Partey in the second half, Arsenal struggled to control the midfield. Lakonga's positioning and overall game IQ is very poor. His positioning was the reason why City scored and why Man U scored 2 of their goals at Old Trafford earlier in the season. I reckon we would've beaten Man U at their home ground if Partey was available.Man U are also the same without Casemiro and that showed last weekend.

Lets not forget what happened when Partey got injured towards end of last season, where we ended up losing 3 games on the trot and we also got ruthlessly exposed against Spurs and Newcastle.

I would say Saka is Arsenal's best player but Partey is Arsenal's most important player because not only is he decent but also because there's no one anywhere near as good him to replace him in his absence. It's for this reason why Arsenal are in panic mode and are desperately trying to sign a CDM.

The injury of Elneny has also compounded things because whilst he's no Partey, at least he's not as bad as Lakonga.

Yes and this is why all season ive said to other fans to stop thinking we need "back ups" for partey / xhaka, we actually need to be in a position where we have 4 midfielders or atleast 3 of equal quality. So going after Caicedo and rice (summer) will give us depth we need.

Look at how poor our midfield had looked in europa league, league defeat vs Brighton and 2 FA Cup games without partey.

Even xhaka goes back to being mediocre when Partey isn't there.

Arsenal need to address this issue short term and longterm.

Get a squad where around 16 players are similar quality so we can compete for 4 trophies a season.

The so called back up signings in recent years Runnarson, cedric, tavares, lakonga, Vieira has been poor to say the least. Club needs to stop this habit as half the time club has had to go out and spend more money to resolve these mediocre signings

Any new signings need to be 1st team quality from now on like Trossard

Arsenal have submitted a second offer worth up to £70m for Ecuador midfielder Moises Caicedo but Brighton want £80m for the 21-year-old. (Mail on Sunday)

Arsenal will continue their summer pursuit of West Ham and England midfielder Declan Rice, 24, even if they sign Caicedo. (Telegraph)

Moises Caicedo made a "mistake" in asking to leave Brighton, says manager Roberto de Zerbi.

The 21-year-old Ecuador midfielder told Brighton in an open letter he wanted a transfer after bids from both Arsenal and Chelsea.

Caicedo was told by the club to take time off until after Tuesday's transfer deadline, meaning he was absent from Sunday's FA Cup tie with Liverpool.

"We hope he stays with us until the end of the season," de Zerbi told ITV.

Caicedo has made 26 appearances for the Brighton in the Premier League, scoring twice, and is under contract until 2025.

The Seagulls have turned down a £60m bid from league leaders Arsenal for him, and also reportedly rejected an earlier £55m offer by Chelsea.

"In life you can make mistake," de Zerbi said before his side's meeting with Liverpool.

"For everyone there are many solutions. We will see the best solution for him and for us."

Brighton are sixth in the Premier League, five points behind fifth-placed Tottenham, but with two games in hand on Antonio Conte's side.

I think you need to take a leaf out of Roy Keane's book. Unlike yourself, he didn't go looking for excuses and told the hard cold truths that Man U cheerleaders need to hear.

In case you missed his reaction to your team's loss, he mentioned that Man U were given a reality check and he also said this about you team,"It's like they haven't moved on from the problems in the past".

Yes Man U were at a disadvantage going into the game with the midweek fixture and absence of Casemiro but lets not pretend that Arsenal would've still been big favourites to beat Man U at the Emirates anyway. We have beaten Man U at the Emirates in 6 of our last 8 PL games, so even with some of our dead teams within the last 7-8 years you've failed at our home ground.

In yesterday's game, you were lucky to get away with a 3-2 scoreline. 4-1 or 5-1 to us would have been a fairer reflection when you consider the fact that we registered 25 shots.

I rate ETH and how he's hit the ground running but the bottom line is you're not at our level yet.

I think we were backs to the wall last 30 purely because we couldn't - or ETH felt he couldn't - rotate.
Of course you played good football but the defending was decent enough to see the game out.
I don't rate Keane as a pundit at all. He is that kind of guy that advocates going through people to let them know you are there- he probably liked what Andy Carrol did yesterday.

The problems of the past he mentioned because we had AWB, Fred and Mactominay on the pitch when they don't really belong - so he was right on that front.

On another day, Ramsdale doesn't make the save of Rashford , Nketiah is offside and united come away with a famous victory and it's a tactical masterclass.where de Gea only has to make one save. I've seen all these pundits before and it is very fine lines and reactionary

Arsenal transfer news: Gunners' £70m bid for Moises Caicedo rejected by Brighton

Arsenal have had their fresh £70m bid for midfielder Moises Caicedo rejected by Brighton.

Brighton's stance remains unchanged and the midfielder is not for sale in January, with the window set to shut on Tuesday at 11pm. Sky Sports News has been told their position will not change.

Had the Seagulls accepted Arsenal's latest offer for the 21-year-old it would have been a club-record transfer, surpassing the £60m sale of Marc Cucurella to Chelsea in the summer.

The Gunners also had their initial £60m offer for Caicedo rejected, which prompted the Colombia international to plead with Brighton to let him leave and join the Premier League leaders in a statement on social media.

Caicedo, who said to Brighton's official website that he was focused solely on his current club just last week, was told to stay away from training with the Seagulls until after Tuesday's transfer deadline following his Instagram post.

Leandro Trossard has already swapped Brighton for Arsenal in the current window in a deal worth £27m.

Why are Chelsea after every transfer target of Arsenal!?

They are hijacking all of our transfer targets by bidding £20m extra

Watch this £70m player for to Chelsea for £85m

Another goal for Balogun on his loan spell in France, what a finish vs PSG. Can't wait till he's fully matured and back at Arsenal.

Midfield signing is a must now for Arsenal in the last 2 days of TW, again leaving it so late never helps.

Arsenal shouldn't have bid anymore than £50m-£60m for Caicedo and certainly shouldn't pay Brighton's asking price of £80m for 2 reasons, firstly he ain't worth the money and secondly this gives incentive to West Hame to charge in excess of £100m for our long-term target, Declan Rice.

2nd TW in a row Arsenal are in panic buy mode for a midfielder, that's the clubs fault for **** poor approach. So yes they will have to over pay for a player now, Edu never learns nor do the club.

Time is running out

Failure to get someone in again in regards to midfield thats on Edu, he messed it up in summer and looks like same here again.

Same thing happened with Aaour deal when they left it late and go no where few seasons back. Even the Thomas partey deal they wasted months before paying the release clause on deadline day.

It is now that time of the window where the only thing that is going is the hope against hope that Edu & Co will pull something out of the bag. And if that is the case, no Denis Suarez or Ceballos pls

What about Kim kallstrom? Or maybe Henry or Campbell on loan? :))

😆... Seems like Tielemans link has returned. Not so excited about him. Not a CDM and not press resistant.

Now Jorginho being linked  we don't need another Chelsea cast off.

Edu is definitely in panic mode.

Edu deserves the sack if this is who we sign. Entire summer TW and this one and midfield has not been addressed.

Had a month and all what has been accompolished is signing a want away winger. I dont understand the reason for sticking with Caicedo even after Brighton made clear that he is not for sale. Same case last time with Vlahovic when it was clear that he preferred Juve. For Edu's sake hope Arsenal's title run does not derail. Next year there would be many competitors.

Chelsea might even ask for generous fee for Jorginho whose contract ends in summer. Everyone knows Arsenal are desperate now.

5 months left on his contract, Edu enjoys these dodgy deals. Won't be surprised if he gets a cut off these type of transfers on the sly. Chelsea enjoy taking pics with these cast off transfers.

Edu is useless when it comes to transfers, always takes way to long and messes most of them up.

Jorginho signing makes zero sense, we have 3 midfielders already over 30 and now he wants another? We are still going to need to sign 2 midfielders in summer if we sign this cast off.

Chelsea fans online are all laughing at Arsenal as usual, they are signing Enzo while we take another has been off them.

Cech, Luiz, William and now maybe jorginho. Shambles.

Also xhaka is very slow in midfield, add Jorginho to it and you have zero mobility or pace, id rather Arsenal recall patino from loan then this mediocre player.

Deal agreed - £12m for 31yo Jorginho on a 1.5 year contract.

Unfortunately, Arteta is Jorginho's #1 fan at Arsenal. He's the one that pushed this through, probably due to his PL experience.

Disappointing signing, but big picture I don't think it's horrible business. Experienced short-term stop-gap until the end of the season, then they'll go big in the summer. He can start the EL games etc, they just wanted another body in there.

Let's hope Partey stays fit.

Teams ( other than City maybe ) play Arsenal on the counter. Jorginho is slower than even xhaka and does not have even half the physicality. Hope Partey stays fit.

Pathetic signing, guy is slower then xhaka, not press resistant and side ways passer like lakonga and elneny. Edu disaster class signing

There is a ROFL type clip where the referee outruns Jorginho when a counter was on. Referee was behind him at the start.

Interesting. I'm skeptical but I tend to trust in Arteta more than myself, he's surely earned it. Still hope Partey stays fit.

Arsenal have agreed a £12m deal with Chelsea to sign Italy midfielder Jorginho.

The 31-year-old, who joined Chelsea from Napoli in 2014, is into the final six months of his contract at Stamford Bridge.

He will now have a medical before signing an 18-month contract with the option of a further year.

The Gunners turned their attentions to Jorginho after having two bids rejected by Brighton for Moises Caicedo.

Brighton say Caicedo is not for sale and it looks increasingly likely the Ecuador midfielder will remain at the club after the 11pm deadline.

Jorginho is set to become Arsenal's third signing of the January window, the club having previously bought Poland defender Jakub Kiwior from Spezia for 20m euros (£17.6m) and Belgium striker Leandro Trossard, who moved from Brighton for £21m.

Mikel Arteta's side are five points clear at the top of the Premier League with a game in hand on the sides immediately below them.

Jorginho has scored 29 goals in 213 appearances for Chelsea, winning the Champions League, Europa League, Uefa Super Cup and Fifa Club World Cup during his time at at the club.

He was born in Brazil but moved to Italy at the age of 15 and opted to play for the Azzurri at international level.

Capped 46 times, he was part of the Italy side that beat England to win Euro 2020 at Wembley in July 2021.

Stats are meaningless here. Partey has been best CDM in the league, jorginho has been rubbish all season. Have you watched jorginho this season?

Everyone has been terrible at Chelsea this season but Jorginho's stats for this season have been good. I was worried that this signing was akin to signing Willian/Cech but we may have a great backup or competition for Partey.

Here we go again, basing everything on stats. One of my best mates is a Chelsea season ticket holder and has wanted this guy gone for 18 months. All Chelsea fans online are against calling arsenal the retirement club, embarrassing to say the least.

He can't run and is worse then xhaka. Then again you think Vieira has been good this season, again shows how little football you actually watch.

Yes, so uve shown 1 video well done. Ask yourself why Chelsea are 10th? Because their midfield is poor. Clearly you haven't watched Chelsea at all this season. The fact most Chelsea fans are happy he's gone Sat's it all.

I didn't go looking for this video, I stumbled across it from this twitter page. Check out his most recent tweets where he goes on to explain why he's a big fan of this signing. He's even suggested that Jorgino could be good enough to replace Partey in the starting XI. But before you bash me for it, these aren't my views. I'm actually agnostic about this transfer.

I think Chelsea are 10th because they also have issues in defence and upfront.

Vieira has been good in the Europa but off late I agree he's been underwhelming.

TBH, 18 months ago he was Chelsea player of the year with a UCL winners medal. And Tuchel rated him highly. My concern is his current form and whether he is fit for Partey role.

Yeah 18 months ago Jorginho was Chelsea's player, just like thiago and fabhino were for Liverpool. In the case of all 3 these players have lost their mobility in midfield and that's why Chelsea and Liverpool have zero control in games and are in middle table.

These are players in decline. So now our midfield will have 4 players over 30. Even on 18 month contract the signing makes zero sense. Unless we are going to bin of elneny and lakonga in summer. Even then Jorginho ain't going to get better.

Issue is apart from kovacic their midfield is rubbish. Kante and Jorginho are done as players, why do you think Chelsea have signed Enzo and looking at other players.

I wonder what cast offs edu will sign next.

Arsenal midfielder Mohamed Elneny will be out for an "extended period" after surgery on a "significant" knee injury.

The Egypt international, 30, sustained the injury in training this month.

Arsenal said they hope to have a "more detailed timescale" on Elneny's return once he begins his rehabilitation.

Vlahovic, mudryk, caciedo all transfers which Arsenal dragged out and got no where with poor negotiations, same will happen in summer with Rice and any other so called big deals that Edu will mess up.

So we are left with just Partey, xhaka and Jorginho for PL and europa league games, what a dumb move.

I think we were backs to the wall last 30 purely because we couldn't - or ETH felt he couldn't - rotate.

And also there is a good reason these "pundits" failed horribly as managers.

On another day, Arsenal could've won 4-1 or 5-1.

I quoted what Keane said not because I think highly of him as a pundit but rather because he speaks as an ex-player who wants to see Man U do well.

I agree with him because the difference in quality between the both sides is significant at present. Arsenal are better than Man U in all areas of the pitch.

The only 2 players I'd take from your team (on the finest of margins) are Rashford and Casemiro over Martinelli and Partey respectively - based on current form.

I've heard Zinchenko and Kiwior can also play CDM but they're not specialists in this role.

Be interesting to see how seriously we now take the europa league and who we play in midfield. Personally the EL is now pointless as we should make CL now. We should have played a stronger side in FA Cup.

Let's see of the kiwior is even ready to play 1st team or is it another Vieira signing where he won't be.

Elneny, lakonga, cedric, holding all need to be gone permanently in the summer.

I think Arsenal have done great business here with Jorginho. If I had to choose,

A) take a risk with a young 21 year old who is highly rated and costing £70m

Or

B) take the safer option by signing a proven, experienced PL midfielder aged 31 who has Champions league and European cup (with Italy) medal

I would always take option B especially chasing the Premier League title. His experience at the top level will be vital, and he will be a key player for us in our 3 toughest games to come against City twice and Liverpool away.

This is a very safe signing for £12m.

Interesting points here:

Willing to give him a chance, think he can be successful on the field (in the limited gametime he'll get) and off the field. Cheap short term stop-gap to something better and longer-lasting in the summer.

In the past decade, Arsenal have signed Cech, Luiz, Willian and Jorginho from Chelsea. The first three were all on a decline when they came to Arsenal and as expected, underwhelmed at Arsenal. Jorgino is also past his best, but Arsenal make the same mistake again by a signing a Chelsea player on a decline.

It is funny that Arsenal give their rivals some of their best players such as Sanchez, Van Persie, Adebayor, Toure, Nasri, Giroud, Cole, etc. But in return, their rivals give them the has-beens or never-beens such as Welbeck, Luiz, Cech, Willian, Silvestre, Jorginho, etc.

Arsenal never learn :)))

Folarin Balogun has scored a hat-trick for Reims and is now the top goalscorer in Ligue 1! 📈

What an incredible campaign he's having.

He should be loaned out to PL club next season and then he will be ready for Arsenal 1st team.

Not really. Don't understand the hate Elneny has had and gets. He their as a squad player and has done a decent job at that since he been at club. If first team ain't been performing it's not his fault. Some games he has done well when he was called onto.

Martinelli signs new Arsenal deal until 2027

Gabriel Martinelli has signed a new contract with Arsenal until the summer of 2027, according to The Athletic.

The 21-year-old's previous deal was set to expire at the end of next season although the club did hold a two-year option, which would have allowed them to extend his deal until 2026.

Martinelli has scored seven goals in 27 games for Arsenal this season.

Also Arsenal's record and scoring goals in recent games vs Shaun dyche teams isn't great either.

A negative result against the likes of Everton can be potentially season derailing. Different from losing against the likes of Big 6 or Brighton for that matter. It is expected that the later games are 50-50.

Key thing will be like the spurs and Brighton games to start well and get an early goal, that will then mean Everton have to change their game plan. They will try and kick us off the park and cause problems on set pieces. 3 points is a must to put more pressure on City. We need to win both games before we play them.

This should be an easy victory as Everton have been gash, one of the worst teams in the league. But first game of manager bounce combined with a passionate home crowd so you never know.

'I see everybody really happy and willing to continue with the club'

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta believes Bukayo Saka and William Saliba will follow Gabriel Martinelli in signing new contracts at the club.

"Part of the plan is to extend the contracts of our biggest talents. We are trying to do that," said Arteta when asked about the pair ahead of his side's trip to Everton on Saturday.

"The others will be done whenever we can. I see everybody really happy and willing to continue with the club."

When asked about Martinelli, Arteta said: "It’s great news. We want to build on all the talent that we have in the squad. It’s great to see them happy and commit to the club.

"It’s a player with enormous potential and there are so many areas to improve in all departments. In terms of consistency, in terms of the space he occupies. He is so willing, that is the first thing about Gabi."

Cagey start so far, no real chances for either team. 0-0 after 16 mins

Everton causing issues with corners, Arsenal need to stay switched on here. Struggling to settle here or keep the ball.

Everton bullying and dominating game in midfield. Also bottling 50:50 challenges.

Everton wasting chances here, they should be leading.

Just our luck - come up against a rejuvenated Everton!

Sean Dyche is a crafty character, surprised he got the boot from Burnley. Plenty of time left for Arsenal still to win it.

Worst 45 min from Arsenal this season. Lucky not being atleast 2 nil down. Created absolutely nothing.

We're lucky to be remain level at half time. Everton have been all over us. Dacoure missed a sitter when Gabriel slipped.

Just our luck - come up against a rejuvenated Everton!

Everton ain't rejuvenated this is how they always play, they should be 1 or even 2-0 up here.

Arsenal can't handle Evertons pressuring or ariel game, that's why we have not won any of the last 4 games here.

Passing round ball slowly against a low block ain't helping either.

Our worst performance last season? Everton away

Our worst performance season before that? Everton away

Same thing here, Everton are using the pitch to move the ball around better then us.

Our midfield 3 have been poor, Martinelli keeps running down blind alleys.
