Arsenal FC | 2022/23 Season

Oleksandr Zinchenko insists Arsenal can achieve "everything they want" after Mikel Arteta's side twice came from behind to beat Aston Villa and reignite their Premier League title hopes.

The Gunners scored twice in stoppage time to return to the top of the table and end a run of three games without a win.

Ollie Watkins gave Villa an early lead and Philippe Coutinho, making his first Premier League start under former Gunners boss Unai Emery, added a second after Bukayo Saka equalised.

Zinchenko then restored parity on the hour, before the drama kicked into overdrive with two stoppage-time goals - an own goal from Emi Martinez after Jorginho's strike hit the bar, and a breakaway finish from substitute Gabriel Martinelli.

"From this game I would like to say two things," Zinchenko told BT Sport afterwards. "First, we took an unbelievable lesson for all of us that we need to believe until the very end.

"Like I said in the past, this group has such amazing people, can achieve everything they want if we are going to keep fighting and keep believing. The reaction from all of us in the second half is a perfect way to go.

"We would like to go in the dressing room as soon as possible but there are still a lot of games to play and we just need to keep going, keep fighting and keep believing we can do everything."

As Zinchenko said, the Gunners learned a lesson - they are capable of finding strength and belief as the title race heats up.

Jorginho MOTM. For the second game running, he's been Arsenal's best player.

I would be very annoyed to see him on the bench when Partey is next available.

Let see what Arteta does when hes got that tough decision to make. Partey and Jorginho would just give Arsenal some much more balance in midfield and potency going forward.

It won't be easy for Arteta because him and Xhaka get on really well. It's also difficult because Xhaka has the presence of a leader but it's obvious that he's not as good as Jorginho.

Managers need to take sentiments out of it and do whats best for the team and xhaka needs to be dropped.

Also the issue of zinchenko causing imbalance on team defensively and the not existant attacks on left handside need to be looked at as well. Yes we have the extra man in midfield, but the whole defense is having to shift across to cover the left back spot as zinchenko is never there, that then means all defenders are moving across to far which means Ben white some times is exposed. There need to be games where Tierney comes in, we are conceeding way to many goals as a unit at moment.

Best weekend of results Arsenal could hope for

Let’s take it step by step instead of dreaming of the title.

Our first priority is to ensure that we cannot be knocked out of champion’s league spots for next season. I think we are 70% there

We can then think about mounting a title charge at the end.

Need a positive Leicester result against Man U for this to be best weekend.

A brilliant game at Villa Park. It had everything.

Arsenal showed a lot of mental strength yesterday and have regained significant momentum in the title race.

Also some funny goalkeeping moments from Martinez.

Not surprised to see people crying as usual as if Arsenal are going to win every game. The title is still in the bag and it never left simply because City are nothing this season.

They were totally outclassed at the Emirates. They couldn’t keep the ball for two seconds and couldn’t string three passes together. City have never had such little possession and so many few attempted and successful passes under Pep.

Arsenal gifted them the win due to two defensive howlers. It was a fluke result. Should have been a draw at worst.

Furthermore, let’s not even talk about the VAR howler against Brentford. Luckily, those two points will not prove costly at the end of the season.

Also, how good has Jorginho been? Amjid Javed once again proving he doesn’t know anything about football.

Well he can stop hiding again now for a little while, plastic fair weather support that he is.

Says the guy who wanted Arteta sacked last season and has zero faith in the team all season. You can’t make it up. :)))

Arsenal will win the league this season. I will make sure you don’t get to celebrate when it happens because I won’t let you breathe with all the posts that I will bump.

Title race is over. Mamoon Even you have to admit our season is done.

I won't be surprised if we crumble further from here and end up finishing 3rd because no one in this Arsenal team is playing with any confidence.

None of them besides Saka looks assertive. It's all very hesitant and indecisive on and off the ball.

We're playing so many loose passes and struggling defensively. We look like a shadow of what were until the halfway mark in this season.

Yes the title race is over because Arsenal have it in the bag. It was signed, sealed and delivered after the wins against Spurs and United.

In spite of the recent bad results, I haven’t had any doubts because City are not capable of being consistent this season. I saw nothing special in them when they fluked the win at the Emirates last week.

City can win the “we beat Arsenal at Emirates” trophy. Arsenal will win the Premier League.

You and Firebat are the only two people in this threads whose posts I will not bump come the end of the season. Everyone else should duck for cover because I will come out all guns blazing.

I think United in any case will qualify top 4

They are not title contenders. Only City are the main threat

They win and they are within 3 points of City. If Arsenal gets dragged down, i dont want Utd to overtake.

Does it help to say we all support the same team... I doubt it :)))

Does it help to say we all support the same team... I doubt it :)))

We do, but some fans like Amjid Javed were so aggressive and vocal with their Arteta out campaign that they have nowhere to hide now.

It is more important for them to see Arsenal capitulate so that they can beat their chests and say “I told you so” than to see Arsenal win the league.

:))) here comes the comedy, you have Been humiliated non stop since the Everton game, you went and ran off into hiding. Then you have the audacity to tell other fans that they cant celebrate.

Plastic fair weather fan that you are, keep wiping the egg of your face.

Only person that's went into hiding was you, even the Moderators on here had to remove some of the posts in this thread mocking you because they were worried you might not return.

I have high standards this club and want them to challenge and win titles, at same time I'm not deluded where I state a wild opinion and then run off crying like you did.

:)) CIty fluke win, they have won on their last 6 PL visits to Emirates and 11 PL games in a row vs Arsenal. :)) what a sore loser, your excuses are hilarious, bump what ever threads you want at end of season.

Right now today I am going to go through this entire thread and bump every single one of your posts to ensure your clueless comments get the humiliation you deserve.

Your like the Chelsea fab that knocked out outside West hams ground, all mouth till you got knocked out.

The plastic fan who has been hiding because of egg on his face for 2 weeks is telling other fans they can't celebrate clubs success because their opinion is different your deluded opinion :)))

This is mental! Mamoon incoming Mamoon incoming.

Mr comedy central is back 🤣 - with excuses and he's usual copy and paste rubbish, watch out he's going bump posts when it's fits his agenda and make us all run off.

What are you on about? You have been wrong every season since Arteta became manager of Arsenal.

Arsenal fans have proved you wrong so many times on PP that I literally have to say nothing.

The less said about your predictions the better.

You only come out of the wood works when Arsenal win or salvage a points deficit.

Skill is saying you hate England but support an English club because your mates said so.

Spot on analysis, why don't you ask Mamoon why he disappeared since the Everton game and he's only just come back.

He's only returned now as everyone predicted because city dropped points at Forrest.

In spite of recent results you have no doubts, yet you have been hiding off the forum since the Everton defeat 🤣🤣. The contradictions are hilarious. A guy who wants to beat his chest when team wins and then rums off after a few defeats.

Oh watch out Mamoon is back all guns blazing with his water pistols filled with 2 weeks worth of tears.

City is a nothing team this season. Arsenal will take care of them at the fortress. Stop being scared.

So Man city's win was now a fluke according to one Arsenal fan :)))

Every other Arsenal fan was humble enough to give City credit. One sore loser was full of excuse. Plenty of humble pie and egg on his face.

Does it help to say we all support the same team... I doubt it :)))

Every fan, accept one sore loser plastic fan aka Mamoon, are always here win or lose.

Like I said as soon as Man city dropped points everyone predicted a certain coward would come out of hiding.

Also, there is no absolutely no evidence that City will take 6 points off Arsenal based on how they teams have played this season. Results from previous seasons when Arsenal was a completely different outfit in terms of personnel, tactics, mentality, fitness etc. mean nothing.

Arsenal bottled man city game weds just like last seasons game, but now it's a fluke according to Mr know it all Mamoon.

Another comedy gem

I see more comments about Mamoon here than Arsenal 🤣

Every club has plastic fans who are an embarrassment to the fan base, so that's why he gets mentioned so much. I'm sure there are similar fans in Newcastle fan who are embarrassment to the club.

Credit for what?

For establishing the following three records?

Lowest possession in a game in the Pep era
Lowest number of passes attempted in a game in the Pep era
Lowest completion rate of successfully passes in a game in the Pep era

Arsenal took very good care of City. Made them look like a bottom-half team who couldn’t touch the ball and had to resort to counter-attacks.

It was a fluke result because City were completely outplayed. Arsenal gifted them two goals due to silly backpasses.

No team in the world can take the ball off City. Yet, they couldn’t take the ball off Arsenal. This is the Arteta effect, the best manager in the world right now. What he has done with Arsenal is nothing short of a miracle.

Thankfully, the board didn’t listen to impatient and ignorant fans like you last season and gave him a new contract when you wanted him sacked.

Moreover, citing past results means nothing. City has dominated Arsenal over the past 3-4 seasons, but this is a different Arsenal team with different mindset. Arteta has changed everything at this club.

Arteta and his players do not deserve fans like you who have no faith in the team. “Fans” who are too scared. You would fear losing the league even if Arsenal needs 1 point with 3 games to go. That is how non-existent your faith is in the team.

If Arteta and his players had your mentality they would not be in this position. As I said, please don’t pretend to celebrate when Arsenal win the league. You don’t deserve to.

:))) Comedy goal, so it's a different Arsenal?but the bottled a game vs City again. But according your comedy opinion its a different mentality. Clueless :))

As per usual rest of your post is just a copy paste from same nonsense you post all the time.

I support the team through thick and thin. As a Doctor I'm surprised you haven't found yourself a cure for cowardice. Shamefully you went into hiding for two weeks and you want to threaten other fans with post bumps and when they can celebrate:)))

Your an embarrassment to the Arsenal fan base.

Do you think Pep cares about those stays, city gave a masterclass in how to tactically change in a big game in being clinical.

You gave a masterclass in being in a plastic fan, 2 full weeks it's taken you to wipe the dozen eggs of your face.

11 defeats in a row in PL vs man city, 6 defeats in a row at home. But there is "no mental block" because Arsenal had most of the ball.

Your clutching at straws because man city had 36% possession in the game and win. What did Arsenal do with all that possession?

Liverpool beat man city at home this season and had 36% possession, its what you do with the ball, not how much possession you have.

Clueless as per usual, keep your copy paste responses coming.

To take one of your phrases "you deserve this humiliation"

:))) go back into hiding for another 2 weeks.

Gents - I know we want to make points but do not get personal or name call each other. It's not nice for others to read and looks bad.

Amjid Javed

I don’t know why it is so hard for you to understandable a simple point. You are not that slow.

Yes it is correct that Arsenal have lost 11 consecutive league games against City. However, how many of the current players have contributed to all of those defeats? No one except Xhaka.

Arteta has revamped the squad over the last couple of years both in terms of personnel and also in terms of how they play, the mental and physical conditioning of the players.

There is no way this crop of players would lose 11 consecutive matches to City.

Yes this is a different Arsenal team and this is why it is top of the table after 23 games.

Furthermore, if you think Pep does not care about the fact that his team had 30% possession and could barely make two passes in a row, you clearly don’t know him.

Pep not just cares about winning but he wants to win his way. This is why he is the most influential manager in modern football. This is why in spite of winning the match, he was not happy with the performance. He knew Arsenal dominated his side.

There is nothing that separates the first-team of Arsenal and City now. Arteta has built a team that is on par with City’s starting XI and capable of dominating the ball against them like no other team in the country can.

I did not go into hiding because Arsenal had a few bad results. Like I said before the Brentford game, Arsenal will have a dip.

You can’t expect them to win every game, however, City is not the same team anymore and incapable of going on the type of winning streaks that they did over the previous seasons. This is why, Arsenal will hold onto their lead.

I did not post after the Brentford game because I knew that shortsighted and ignorant fans like you (who wanted Arteta sacked last season) would be throwing tantrums and claiming that the league is gone.

Speaking of going into hiding, I’m sure you will not be around these threads when Arsenal win the league in May. You are actively praying and hoping for Arsenal to fall short and you can celebrate but too bad, that is not happen.

Arsenal will win the league this season and I have already placed orders for eggs and tomatoes not only for you but for so many other posters. No one will be spared from my wrath come May. :klopp

Thanks for the copy paste response, this thread is now 26 pages long and on every single page their is at least 1 post from you with exact same comments, you are like a broken record. Like 2 non-Arsenal posters said you always dissappear and reappear when results suit your agenda, so all this about you not posting after Brentford is because you go a dose of humble pie. Try showing some humility when your wrong.

I have been since 2004, so all your "comical attempts at bumping posts at end of season" Is nothing new, take the rough with the smooth.

Your no different to way Asian Liverpool fans behave is a similar arrogant manner.

Easy with the trolling.

Best to put in good arguments which are informative.

Do you think it's time for Martinelli to play CF instead of Nketiah whilst keeping Trossard on the left wing?

Only one person Trolling here, so let me say what i have to say and i will from my point of view draw a line under this.

Mamoon wants to threaten fellow Arsenal fans in this thread by bumping old posts, because they supposedly have no faith in the team and they are scared.

So lets deal with Facts seen as though you want to see a good Arguement.

Zero faith in the team?

Mamoon back in october on the "who will win the premier league prediction thread" said city would win the league, He also said City would take 6 points of Arsenal.

Now months later he has become a flip flop. Where was all his chest beating and faith up until october?

Mid season he has changed your predicition and hes telling other fans they can celebrate Team sucsess?

So Mamoon has gone from "City will take 6 points off Arsenal"

To there is no indication that city will take 6 points off Arsenal.

Then to Arsenal will deal with City at fortress emirates

Then to City was a fluke win.

So with in the space of a few months hes contradicted his own comments

You actually think any is going to take such a posster you seriously when hes flip flopping

Mamoon in october you said City would win the league, then he say the Title race was over After Arsenal beat chelsea back in November

Again contradicting himself. Then when posters actually call him out on his contradictions or call him out when hes wrong, the guy dissappears off then forum.

two simple rules, if you going to give an opinion "dont contradicted yourself" and dont go into hiding when your proven wrong.

Some one got a dose of humble pie and didnt like it.

End of discussion for me on this.

What did you make of Villa’s showing? we are stuck in the mid table forever

Poor decision, at end of season Arsenal need to move on. Xhaka maybe having his best season at Arsenal but even then when you take partey out of the team xhaka looks mediocre.

We have jorginho, partey, xhaka and elneny all over the age of 30, the midfield needs freshening up, otherwise we will end up like Liverpool did where multiple players all decline at same time (Henderson, Miller, fabinho, thiago) and you end up having to replace multiple players at once.

There are plenty of players out there who are available and an upgrade on xhaka.

Being in CL next season if the club is just going to be there to make up numbers then keeping average players like elneny and xhaka is fine, Arsenal need to be looking at players like rice, Bellingham, MNS if they want to be a force long term.

Arsenal have reached verbal agreement to extend Bukayo Saka contract — new long term deal always been a priority

Arsenal have reached verbal agreement to extend Bukayo Saka contract — new long term deal always been a priority

We've heard this has been agreed for about 6 months, the sooner this so called deal is signed the better.

Arsenal have put West Ham's England midfielder Declan Rice, 24, at the top of their wanted list this summer as the Gunners are unlikely to have the funds to compete for Borussia Dortmund's £150m-rated England midfielder Jude Bellingham, 19. (Football.London)

More from Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta on the impact Jorginho has made since moving from Chelsea in January: "He’s got the experience, he’s got the qualities we need in the team and he knows the league so well so there is not a lot of things that are new or catching him by surprise.”

On players' mood since late goals clinched victory at Aston Villa to put Arsenal back on top of the Premier League: "Much better mood, much more positive. The confidence is much better, the environment around training is much better. The fact the team showed the capacity in an adverse situation - when you are 2-1 down and played less than 72 hours before and everyone is expecting you to be tired mentally - to be able to come back and win the game is a real big boost for us. I see how much they want it."

Arteta on Gabriel Jesus: "He is progressing really well, he is doing more and more on the field. The knee is not reacting, so really positive. I would like to have him back as quickly as possible but we have to respect the time frame that we got from the doctors and the specialists - but he is really pushing the boundaries right now."

What did you make of Villa’s showing? we are stuck in the mid table forever

Aston Villa don’t have the financial muscle to challenge for the top 6 like Newcastle, but it is a wonderful, historic club and the fans should be proud.

Football is more than just finishing in the top half and winning trophies. Playing for Aston Villa is an honor and supporting Aston Villa is a privilege.

Unai Emery is a very good manager. He has learned a lot from the Arsenal experience and it was brave of him to return to England so soon after that experience.

I want to see the following changes against Leicester:

Tierney - LB
Martinelli - CF
Jorginho or Zinchenko to replace Xhaka (if Partey is back fit)

Zinchenko always ends up in Xhaka's position. I think his inverted style at LB is hampering Trossard/Martinelli who will always end up being isolated. Tierney is a better defender and he can deliver better crosses. But more importantly he can provide better support to the LWF.

Xhaka is untouchable right now. Not only is he playing brilliantly, his presence on the pitch is hugely important. He is a big character who drives the team, fights for the team and uplifts the fans.

Tierney is a good LB but his Arsenal career is done and dusted in my opinion. He is not winning the LB race because Zinchenko brings so much to the table in spite of being a dodgy defender.

Having Zinchenko at LB basically means you are playing with an extra midfielder and forward, and his presence adds a whole different dimension to Arsenal’s attack.

Xhaka’s long-term replacement could be Charlie Patino. This kid has world class potential and could have a Saka level impact once he is integrated in the first-team.

I've seen Xhaka play recently and his levels have dropped. I appreciate it might just be a dip in form but I think Jorginho is better.

Zinchenko isn't a natural LB. It's a Guardiola innovation which works for Man City. I'm not sure if it'll work for Arsenal in the long run. Remember he doesn't play LB for Ukraine. He plays CAM instead. I don't understand why he ends up drifting into Xhaka's position. It makes us vulnerable on the left wing not just defensively but also going forward.

100 % spot on analysis.

If Leicester give us as much space as they gave United, it should be a cakewalk for Martinelli and Saka.

I hope that version of Leicester turns up not the that thumped Spurs earlier in the month!

Arsenal have opened talks with France centre-back William Saliba, 21, over a new contract. (Football Insider)

Leicester could be open. They have weak defense compared to Villa, but they have more talented and dangerous attacking play. Arsenal defense has been shambolic of late.

and what about Fabio Vieira against Sporting? I honestly think he'll smoke them just watch.

I think Arsenal need to rest a few key players for the Fulham game. So Against sporting they should play

Turner, Tomi, saliba, kiwor, Zinchenko, Jorginho, xhaka, Vieira, ESR, Trossard, Martinelli

Jorginho is here to compete with Partey, not Xhaka. Arteta will never pair Jorginho and Partey together because having a left-footed player in that position gives the team more options.

Xhaka’s left-footedness is an asset. It works really when he is paired with Partey/Jorginho. If Xhaka is unavailable then Zinchenko will fill in, but there is no possibility of Xhaka getting dropped. He has been vital to the team’s success this season.

Zinchenko’s ability to play multiple positions and play as an inverted full-back gives Arsenal so much potency in attack and makes it very unpredictable for the opposition.

One of the major reasons why Arsenal have been hard to defend against this season is because of the positions Zinchenko takes up on the pitch. This is precisely why Arteta signed him.

Yes it means the left side is a bit vulnerable defensively, but it is a trade-off. Overall, Zinchenko at LB is more of an asset than a liability. He brings so much to the table compared to a generic LB like Tierney.

Tierney at LB and Zinchenko replacing Xhaka as an LCM with the latter on the bench will simply not work as well as the current setup.

I like Tierney but he doesn’t fit into Arteta’s plans and I expect him to leave in the summer, with Arteta signing a new LB who will be in the same mould as Zinchenko.

Fulham away is a real fight. Why would you want to rest key players? For me, Arsenal should take Europa lightly

Martinelli starts and through the middle, Eddie back on bench where he belongs. Partey on the bench as well, so he must be partially fit again.

Leicester City v Arsenal (15:00 GMT)

The league leaders make just one change to the team that beat Aston Villa 4-2, with Gabriel Martinelli replacing Eddie Nketiah.

Arsenal XI: Ramsdale, Whitee, Gabriel, Zinchenko, Odegaard, Jorginho, Xhaka, Saka, Martinelli, Trossard.

Subs: Turner, Tierney, Partey, Smith Rowe, Nketiah, Kiwior, Holding, Tomiyasu, Vieira.

Looks like either Martinelli or Trossard will play CF.

Great touch from Arsenal to make Zinchenko the captain for this game.

Loose final balls from Xhaka and Zinchenko.

That wonderful through ball from Jorginho to Saka is an example of why he's better suited to play in Xhaka's position. His passing is so much better.

Why was the goal disallowed?

A supposed foul by white on the keeper, soft decision. We need to be better in final 3rd.

0-0 HT

Leicester are capable of sneaking a goal in 2nd half, Arsenal need to move ball quicker then they have been.

What happened to "Clear and obvious" by the VAR team?

Doesn't Apply vs Arsenal, we all know the FA are full of cheats.

We need to win this game, can't drop points with City and United not far behind us.

Good win that.

Got to take those scrappy 1-0 wins especially away from home.
