Arsenal FC | 2022/23 Season

Oleksandr Zinchenko insists Arsenal can achieve "everything they want" after Mikel Arteta's side twice came from behind to beat Aston Villa and reignite their Premier League title hopes.

The Gunners scored twice in stoppage time to return to the top of the table and end a run of three games without a win.

Ollie Watkins gave Villa an early lead and Philippe Coutinho, making his first Premier League start under former Gunners boss Unai Emery, added a second after Bukayo Saka equalised.

Zinchenko then restored parity on the hour, before the drama kicked into overdrive with two stoppage-time goals - an own goal from Emi Martinez after Jorginho's strike hit the bar, and a breakaway finish from substitute Gabriel Martinelli.

"From this game I would like to say two things," Zinchenko told BT Sport afterwards. "First, we took an unbelievable lesson for all of us that we need to believe until the very end.

"Like I said in the past, this group has such amazing people, can achieve everything they want if we are going to keep fighting and keep believing. The reaction from all of us in the second half is a perfect way to go.

"We would like to go in the dressing room as soon as possible but there are still a lot of games to play and we just need to keep going, keep fighting and keep believing we can do everything."

As Zinchenko said, the Gunners learned a lesson - they are capable of finding strength and belief as the title race heats up.

Let see what Arteta does when hes got that tough decision to make. Partey and Jorginho would just give Arsenal some much more balance in midfield and potency going forward.

It won't be easy for Arteta because him and Xhaka get on really well. It's also difficult because Xhaka has the presence of a leader but it's obvious that he's not as good as Jorginho.

Managers need to take sentiments out of it and do whats best for the team and xhaka needs to be dropped.

Also the issue of zinchenko causing imbalance on team defensively and the not existant attacks on left handside need to be looked at as well. Yes we have the extra man in midfield, but the whole defense is having to shift across to cover the left back spot as zinchenko is never there, that then means all defenders are moving across to far which means Ben white some times is exposed. There need to be games where Tierney comes in, we are conceeding way to many goals as a unit at moment.

A brilliant game at Villa Park. It had everything.

Arsenal showed a lot of mental strength yesterday and have regained significant momentum in the title race.

Also some funny goalkeeping moments from Martinez.
 
Not surprised to see people crying as usual as if Arsenal are going to win every game. The title is still in the bag and it never left simply because City are nothing this season.

They were totally outclassed at the Emirates. They couldn’t keep the ball for two seconds and couldn’t string three passes together. City have never had such little possession and so many few attempted and successful passes under Pep.

Arsenal gifted them the win due to two defensive howlers. It was a fluke result. Should have been a draw at worst.

Furthermore, let’s not even talk about the VAR howler against Brentford. Luckily, those two points will not prove costly at the end of the season.

Also, how good has Jorginho been? [MENTION=16]Amjid Javed[/MENTION] once again proving he doesn’t know anything about football.

Yes the title race is over because Arsenal have it in the bag. It was signed, sealed and delivered after the wins against Spurs and United.

In spite of the recent bad results, I haven’t had any doubts because City are not capable of being consistent this season. I saw nothing special in them when they fluked the win at the Emirates last week.

City can win the “we beat Arsenal at Emirates” trophy. Arsenal will win the Premier League.

It is more important for them to see Arsenal capitulate so that they can beat their chests and say “I told you so” than to see Arsenal win the league.

11 defeats in a row in PL vs man city, 6 defeats in a row at home. But there is "no mental block" because Arsenal had most of the ball.

Your clutching at straws because man city had 36% possession in the game and win. What did Arsenal do with all that possession?

Liverpool beat man city at home this season and had 36% possession,its what you do with the ball, not how much possession you have.

There is no way this crop of players would lose 11 consecutive matches to City.

Like 2 non-Arsenal posters said you always dissappear and reappear when results suit your agenda, so all this about you not posting after Brentford is because you go a dose of humble pie. Now months later he has become a flip flop. Where was all his chest beating and faith up until october?

There is nothing that separates the first-team of Arsenal and City now. Arteta has built a team that is on par with City’s starting XI and capable of dominating the ball against them like no other team in the country can.

I did not go into hiding because Arsenal had a few bad results. Like I said before the Brentford game, Arsenal will have a dip.

You can’t expect them to win every game, however, City is not the same team anymore and incapable of going on the type of winning streaks that they did over the previous seasons. This is why, Arsenal will hold onto their lead.

I did not post after the Brentford game because I knew that shortsighted and ignorant fans like you (who wanted Arteta sacked last season) would be throwing tantrums and claiming that the league is gone.

Speaking of going into hiding, I’m sure you will not be around these threads when Arsenal win the league in May. You are actively praying and hoping for Arsenal to fall short and you can celebrate but too bad, that is not happen.

Arsenal will win the league this season and I have already placed orders for eggs and tomatoes not only for you but for so many other posters. No one will be spared from my wrath come May. :klopp

Poor decision, at end of season Arsenal need to move on. Xhaka maybe having his best season at Arsenal but even then when you take partey out of the team xhaka looks mediocre.

We have jorginho, partey, xhaka and elneny all over the age of 30, the midfield needs freshening up, otherwise we will end up like Liverpool did where multiple players all decline at same time (Henderson, Miller, fabinho, thiago) and you end up having to replace multiple players at once.

There are plenty of players out there who are available and an upgrade on xhaka.

Being in CL next season if the club is just going to be there to make up numbers then keeping average players like elneny and xhaka is fine, Arsenal need to be looking at players like rice, Bellingham, MNS if they want to be a force long term.

We've heard this has been agreed for about 6 months, the sooner this so called deal is signed the better.

Aston Villa don’t have the financial muscle to challenge for the top 6 like Newcastle, but it is a wonderful, historic club and the fans should be proud.

Football is more than just finishing in the top half and winning trophies. Playing for Aston Villa is an honor and supporting Aston Villa is a privilege.

Unai Emery is a very good manager. He has learned a lot from the Arsenal experience and it was brave of him to return to England so soon after that experience.

Tierney - LB
Martinelli - CF
Jorginho or Zinchenko to replace Xhaka (if Partey is back fit)

Zinchenko always ends up in Xhaka's position. I think his inverted style at LB is hampering Trossard/Martinelli who will always end up being isolated. Tierney is a better defender and he can deliver better crosses. But more importantly he can provide better support to the LWF.

Xhaka is untouchable right now. Not only is he playing brilliantly, his presence on the pitch is hugely important. He is a big character who drives the team, fights for the team and uplifts the fans.

Tierney is a good LB but his Arsenal career is done and dusted in my opinion. He is not winning the LB race because Zinchenko brings so much to the table in spite of being a dodgy defender.

Having Zinchenko at LB basically means you are playing with an extra midfielder and forward, and his presence adds a whole different dimension to Arsenal’s attack.

Xhaka’s long-term replacement could be Charlie Patino. This kid has world class potential and could have a Saka level impact once he is integrated in the first-team.

I've seen Xhaka play recently and his levels have dropped. I appreciate it might just be a dip in form but I think Jorginho is better.

Zinchenko isn't a natural LB. It's a Guardiola innovation which works for Man City. I'm not sure if it'll work for Arsenal in the long run. Remember he doesn't play LB for Ukraine. He plays CAM instead. I don't understand why he ends up drifting into Xhaka's position. It makes us vulnerable on the left wing not just defensively but also going forward.

Leicester could be open. They have weak defense compared to Villa, but they have more talented and dangerous attacking play. Arsenal defense has been shambolic of late.

I think Arsenal need to rest a few key players for the Fulham game. So Against sporting they should play

Turner, Tomi, saliba, kiwor, Zinchenko, Jorginho, xhaka, Vieira, ESR, Trossard, Martinelli

Jorginho is here to compete with Partey, not Xhaka. Arteta will never pair Jorginho and Partey together because having a left-footed player in that position gives the team more options.

Xhaka’s left-footedness is an asset. It works really when he is paired with Partey/Jorginho. If Xhaka is unavailable then Zinchenko will fill in, but there is no possibility of Xhaka getting dropped. He has been vital to the team’s success this season.

Zinchenko’s ability to play multiple positions and play as an inverted full-back gives Arsenal so much potency in attack and makes it very unpredictable for the opposition.

One of the major reasons why Arsenal have been hard to defend against this season is because of the positions Zinchenko takes up on the pitch. This is precisely why Arteta signed him.

Yes it means the left side is a bit vulnerable defensively, but it is a trade-off. Overall, Zinchenko at LB is more of an asset than a liability. He brings so much to the table compared to a generic LB like Tierney.

Tierney at LB and Zinchenko replacing Xhaka as an LCM with the latter on the bench will simply not work as well as the current setup.

I like Tierney but he doesn’t fit into Arteta’s plans and I expect him to leave in the summer, with Arteta signing a new LB who will be in the same mould as Zinchenko.

Fulham away is a real fight. Why would you want to rest key players? For me, Arsenal should take Europa lightly
 
Martinelli starts and through the middle, Eddie back on bench where he belongs. Partey on the bench as well, so he must be partially fit again.

Loose final balls from Xhaka and Zinchenko.

That wonderful through ball from Jorginho to Saka is an example of why he's better suited to play in Xhaka's position. His passing is so much better.
