What's new

Arsenal FC | 2022/23 Season

What rubbish is this. Lots of people thought today would officially be the end of arsenal's title race.
I think they are right in there now as there will be a time where arsenal have played 37 games and probably be top and city will have only played 35 (after your 2nd last game at forest)
Even if city don't drop point Vs Everton they could easily have nervous moments Vs Chelsea and Brighton and Brentford away

Man city haven't dropped points consecutive games all season, they need to drop 4 points and that ain't going to happen. Plus city's goal difference is worth an extra points as well.

Pressure is off Arsenal as they aren't expected to win league now after dropping in 4 consecutive games. You simple can't afford to do that in a title race.

Too much hate for him here. He keeps saving Arsenal. 15 goals from midfield positions is just amazing :)

50 goals for our two norwegian heroes :)

It's not hate, it's just he goes missing when it's needed most, pretty much dissapeared in the 4 games Arsenal dropped points in, top captain and leaders don't do that at crunch time.

West Ham will allow Declan Rice to leave this summer if they receive an offer worth £120m from a Champions League club.

West Ham would also accept £100m plus a player for the midfielder, with the Hammers already receiving enquiries about him.

His most likely destination at the moment is Arsenal while Chelsea, Manchester United and Liverpool have also shown an interest in the England international.

£120m is too much for an English player. He will have a target on the back of his head like Harry McGuire if this goes through

Risky business this

Ooft, eye watering amounts for not even an impactful player (goals/assists). Not long ago you could build a high capacity stadium for that amount never mind one player.

£100M is way to much, let alone £120M

West ham are just after a bidding war on a player whose contract has very little left on, he's had a few good games recently so West ham will milk it now.

Edu needs to have a plan A, B, C etc... and not spend entire window chasing 1 player as usual then panic if 1st choice is failed to be signed again

Granit Xhaka: Bayer Leverkusen remain interested in signing Arsenal midfielder but deal next summer more likely

Bayer Leverkusen remain interested in signing Arsenal's Granit Xhaka, according to Sky Germany.

However, a transfer is thought to be more likely in the summer of 2024, when his current Arsenal deal runs out.

According to Sky Germany, Bayer can in principle imagine signing the player next summer. The club still want an aggressive leader in midfield.

Xhaka was previously Arsenal club captain and, although that is now Martin Odegaard, he has skippered the team in the Europa League this season.

The 30-year-old can imagine a Bundesliga return, according to Sky Germany, and has told fellow players about the idea.

Bayer twice came close to signing Xhaka before, most recently last summer.

The Switzerland captain has resurrected his Arsenal career under Mikel Arteta, however, and is now fundamental to the team that is competing for the Premier League title this season.

Xhaka's agency and Bayer have so far been silent on Sky Germany's requests. Sky Sports News has also contacted Arsenal for comment.

Arsenal hope to announce Saka deal this month

Arsenal are hoping to announce Bukayo Saka's new contract before the end of the Premier League season, according to PA.

The England forward has been in talks with the club since last year but is committed to signing a new deal, which could now be sewn up before the summer break.

Saka, 21, has played a pivotal role in the Gunners' title challenge this season and is the only Premier League player to reach double figures for goals and assists.

Talks with Arsenal over fresh terms have stretched back to last summer, with Saka saying in August he "shared confidence" with Arteta that he would extend his deal at the Emirates Stadium.

PA understands an agreement has all-but been reached for a new contract for the academy graduate, whose last deal was signed in the summer of 2020 and expires next year.

Time to move xhaka on, giving him new contract would be stupid. Our midfield needs a refresh and upgrade on players.

BREAKING: Arsenal are in talks with England goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale over an improved contract.

Ramsdale's current deal expires in the summer of 2026.

Arsenal have to hope Madrid have fatigued City and pick up and scraps.

They'll have to show some more authority themselves on Sunday and gun down the sea ferrets

Pretty sure you use to go on about having strength in depth? We definitely need Xhaka for depth next year. He will provide cover for Rice and Caicedo (assuming we sign them.) Remember, we will be in CL, with Patino/El-neny leaving, we cannot go into 4-5 competitions without depth/cover or experience.

Elneny was given a new contract for no reason, so he won't be leaving even though he should. Also if we got the 2 players in uve mentioned would xhaka be happy playing as a back up?

Yes we do need depth, but we also need to start moving certain players on.

Holding, AMN, Tavares, Elneny, xhaka, Vieira, Balagun, nketitah, Pepe all need to be moved on.

Time for club to be ruthless.

Arsenal should be aiming for 2 big midfield signings (rice / caciedo / zubamendi / de jong) and if xhaka goes, a 3rd midfielder could be brought in on a free (tielemens or Gundogan)

Arsenal are reportedly hoping to announce Bukayo Saka's lucrative new contract before the end of the season.

The Gunners have made it a priority in tying the 21-year-old down to a new deal with the winger set to become a free agent in 2024.

talkSPORT understands that the England international agreed to a new £300K-a-week salary until 2028 earlier this year.

It would make the Hale End graduate, who has been eyed up by Premier League title rivals Manchester City, the club's highest-paid player.

And according to PA Sport, an official announcement on Saka's contract extension could take place before the conclusion of the current campaign.

The report adds that only the finer details are being ironed out, with promotional footage to accompany the statement already filmed.

Saka has been instrumental in Arsenal's title tilt - chipping in with 24 goal contributions in 35 top flight matches.

He is the only player in the Premier League this term to amass double digits for goals [13] and assists [11] this term.

Arsenal will win the league.

The win at Newcastle has the set the cat among the pigeons in the City camp. City are distracted by the CL and they have three tricks away games coming up.

They will drop points and Arsenal will snatch the title from under their nose on the final day.

Arsenal stars William Saliba and Oleksandr Zinchenko have been ruled out for the rest of the season.

Saliba had suffered a back injury during the defeat to Sporting Lisbon in the Last 16 of the Europa League. The French defender has not been able to return to the pitch since he went off early into the second leg, with the Gunners losing the tie on penalties.

Zinchenko, meanwhile, was forced off during the win over Newcastle last Sunday with a calf problem. That issue now appears to be more serious than expected, with the Ukrainian now sidelined along with Saliba for the final three games of the Premier League season.

Still think it is highly unlikely for City to drop 5 points and slightly less unlikely for Arsenal to romp away with 3 more straight wins.

However it has been a huge step forward for Arsenal to perform to the overall level they have this season.

They've tired massively towards the end and Arteta may have played his cards a bit wrong in some crunch moments i.e. unwillingness to change things until too late.

But they are set up for a very crucial summer where they can add genuine depth to a very competitive system they've built.

What a sensational performance that was over Newcastle. Praying for a miracle!

Zinchenko's injury isn't bad news. It means Arteta has no option but to pick Tierney over his favourite, Zinchenko at left back.

As many as 14 first-team Arsenal players are on the chopping block this summer, and two stars have already seen their exits confirmed, per reports.

A big summer to double down on what has been a wholly encouraging campaign for Arsenal is hotly anticipated.

Declan Rice is the Gunners’ primary midfield target and is likely to cost a new club-record if signed. The current mark remains the £72m paid to sign Nicolas Pepe from Lille in 2019.

However, according to a report from Goal, who leaves the Emirates is set to be just as intriguing as who arrives.

Indeed, the outlet list 14 players who are facing uncertain futures to different degrees, and two stars have already seen their departures greenlit.

The pair in question are centre-back Pablo Mari and versatile midfielder, Ainsley Maitland-Niles.

Mari is on loan at Serie A side Monza and his deal contained an obligation to buy if they avoided relegation.

Monza have already beaten the drop with multiple games to spare and the Mirror reported a €7m (approx. £6.15m) deal will occur.

Maitland-Niles is also out on loan with EPL strugglers Southampton. The 25-year-old is out of contract at season’s end and recently told the Athletic he’ll not be returning to Arsenal.

Confirming his own exit, Maitland-Niles told the outlet: “It’s been a great journey but it has come to an end now (at Arsenal). It’s time for a fresh start and to find a new home.”

Tierney, Xhaka, Smith Rowe among 12 more at risk

Elsewhere, Goal list 12 further first-teamers who could leave the Emirates this summer.

The at-risk dozen are: Cedric Soares, Rob Holding, Auston Trusty, Kieran Tierney, Nuno Tavares, Albert Sambi Lokonga, Granit Xhaka, Charlie Patino, Emile Smith Rowe, Reiss Nelson, Nicolas Pepe and Folarin Balogun.

Holding will only make way if Arsenal sign a new right-footed centre-back. Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi is in their sights.

Fellow centre-back Trusty was recently named Birmingham City fans’ player of the year after a superb season on loan. However, his limitations with the ball at feet make him a poor fit for Arteta and a move to Scottish giant Rangers has been touted.

Left-back Tierney has lost his place to Oleksandr Zinchenko and counts Aston Villa, Newcastle and Man City among his admirers.

Xhaka would be a surprise exit given he’s thrived in more of a box-to-box role this term. However, with a new signing the calibre of Declan Rice wanted, Xhaka may be relegated to a bench role next season.

A return to Germany with Xabi Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen could occur. However, any bid is likely to be ‘less than £20m’, according to the Mirror.

The ultra-reliable David Ornstein recently confirmed Arsenal will allow youngster Patino to leave on a permanent basis this summer. Patino does not want to warm the bench or be loaned out once again after getting a taste of regular action while loaned to Blackpool this term.

Nelson is out of contract and negotiations over a new deal are yet to bear fruit. Balogun, meanwhile, has been ripping it up in Ligue 1 while on loan at Reims.

Balogun has bagged 18 league goals for the French outfit, though per reports, Arsenal are unlikely to benefit in the long run.

That’s because the Daily Mail recently claimed Balogun is dead set against a third loan spell away. He was previously on loan at Middlesbrough in the first half of 2022.

Adding further fuel to the exit fire is a report from the Athletic that stated Balogun won’t sign a new deal in north London. His current contract expires in 2025.

The Times subsequently reported that with Arsenal backed into a corner, they’ll reluctantly listen to offers at season’s end.

Wanted to thank all who have participated in this thread

To my knowledge this has been the busiest Arsenal thread in the history of PP - probably the most posted one in terms of Football teams!

Zinchenko's injury isn't bad news. It means Arteta has no option but to pick Tierney over his favourite, Zinchenko at left back.

Zinchenko's has missed just as much football as Tierney over their careers. Having Tierney back in team will be huge boost, Zinchenko is one of reasons we won't be winning league, huge liability defensively.

Nketiah should be added to that list as should Vieira.

Getting rid or Tierney and ESR would be plain dumb.

Austin Trusty was never going to play for Arsenal, he was simply signed so kronkes U.S owned football team got a transfer free to rebuild their squad, as kronke couldn't be bothered putting his own money into thar club.

Arsenal have made some bizarre signings at times, which have been nothing but dodgy deals.

I love ESR but unfortunately, it will be very difficult to convince him to stay. It is very unlikely. He has high potential and he can start for most teams in the PL. Same goes for Tierney.

Man City can afford to keep a huge squad and rotate players because they can pay very high wages. Arsenal cannot afford to give bumper deals to squad players.

It is not easy for Arsenal to find quality bench players. You need someone who is good enough to fill in when required but will also be content with sitting on the bench in most of the PL and CL games.

Yeah ESR would walk into most starting line ups apart from City, Liverpool and maybe at united. He may end up at Villa, Emery was one who gave him a chance at Arsenal and Villa have shown interest in the player.

Getting rid of Tierney, means we are left with Zinchenko. Whilst he may fit Arteta's system he's just as injury prone Tierney, add to that his a liability defensively. Zinchenko will get exposed in the CL next season.

That will also mean Arsenal have to get another left back in, who exactly is their out there that you can think off? Cancelo has been linked and would be an upgrade Zinchenko.

Also we have issues at RB - White is brilliant, but Tomiyasu is a liability with injuries and that means we are going to need another right back probably in summer as well.

2 Midfielders and another forward need to be priority, but again the club will end up wasting money on having to re address areas like defence because of poor recruitment or poor decision making on players being let go.

We should not get rid of Xhaka. We will get peanuts for him anyway. Should just keep him until his contract runs out in 2024 as good squad depth and leadership, he's an invaluable member of the dressing room by all accounts.

We need to get rid of deadwood, but we should not be selling to raise funds. The squad is (too) lean, we should be adding not subtracting. I would only move on Holding, Elneny, Nelson, Nketiah, Balogun. Everyone else should stay.

Cancelo would be a fantastic signing but I doubt if City would do strengthen its biggest rival at the moment, but if Arteta can pull it off if will be a massive coup. He can play 3-4 positions.

Cancelo + a CB would be ideal. Holding must leave.

One good season in 7 and now we should keep xhaka, seems to many Arsenal fans are use to mediocre players at the club.

Elneny has been given a new contract (which he shouldn't have). Giving xhaka a new contract makes zero sense he's going to have no sale value in a few years.

Those crying about we will only get peanuts, we'll that should tell you that not many clubs want him and even after 1 good season he's worth nothing.

Most of out midfield is over 30 and ain't getting better but fans want to keep the mediocrity.

I'd rather the club bin of elneny and xhaka and spend most of Transfer kitty on 2 top class midfielders, we can even get a 3rd on a free

Tielemens or even gundogan on a free transfer

Go sign rice and Caicedo or lavia as 2 main midfielders

Man City having a big squad is an oft repeated myth

They have one of the if not the smallest squad in the league and recently I saw a stat which showed they used the least amount of players

What they have is a core group of quality to good players, about 16-17, who they rely on and use very well. They do pay well but it's not a bloated squad.

There are 2 things that Pep does well which others can try to follow, the first is he rotates well so players don't get fatigued (It's why in FPL Pep roulette is a real fear) and secondly he either buys players that are versatile or he coaches them to be able to play in multiple positions.

I think the perception of City’s squad size has to do with the quality of players that they have on the bench. City is the only club in the PL that can frequently bench players like Mahrez, Foden, Alvarez etc. without upsetting them.

I hope we do the business against Tottenham today, will need a big favour from Arsenal tomorrow to

100% spot on, I've read and seen this stats as well. Man city have used the smallest number of players and rotate well.

There is nothing to stop Arsenal, Liverpool, United etc.. to be in same situation and have a squad of 17 players they can rotate like for like. Instead Arsenal have bought mediocre back up options instead. Once you get past the starting 11, apart from Trossard, ESR and Tierney the rest are not good enough to keep 1st team levels as high as they should.

Before anyone cries about money, their are players who can be obtained at a good price to do a good job. Liverpool did it for 4-5 years. Yet with Edu it's always hit and miss transfer policy. Arsenal can't afford another hit and miss transfer window, every window money wasted addressing mediocre signings from the last few windows.

2 top class midfielders is a start and then a striker. Sadly edu has shown he's not up to task getting 1st choice options in

ESR won't be sold.

Reckon he'll be back in starting eleven next season but in a different role.

Arsenal are set to face significant competition from Manchester United this summer in the race to prise Declan Rice away from West Ham. (Sunday Mirror)

Looks like City will almost certainly beat Everton after going 2-0 up.

I can't see them losing 5 points in their last 3 games so I think that seals their title.

Those 6 dropped points against Liverpool, WH and SH are starting to hurt now

Arsenal dropped points vs everton, Brentford, City

Then Liverpool, West ham, Southampton, City

You simply can't do that in a title race, City haven't dropped points in consecutive games all season

Until Arsenal gey out of that habit they will keep bottling pressure end of season.

Yeah I think Arsenal had a huge chance to seal the title with wins against Brentford and City early on too. I mentioned it then as well that it is extremely difficult to pull back a 10 point lead from your opponents in a title race. That’s what Arsenal missed out on at the time

Arsenal had 2 chances to go into both City fixtures with a big lead and be in a situation where losses wouldn't be fatal. Instead they chocked on both occasions and went into games with zero confidence.

Also it's clear this team has a mental block vs City, I said this at start of season and all I heard was this is a different team and they are stronger mentally, but again they looked clueless in 2 league games vs City. Losing 12 PL games in a row vs City is pathetic and shameful to say the least.

Brighton are there for the taking.

A better final ball and more intent and Arsenal should win.

This game is similar to one last season, Arsenal playing well until final 3rd and then Brighton scored twice on break. Same could happen here if not careful.

Saka's end product has been poor once again today. Whoever gets 1st goal here wins game I think.

Brighton take lead 1-0 no surprise here, said this would happen at HT

Brighton have won 2, drawn 1, lost 1 on last 4 visits, so another win here won't be a shock.

Arteta will probably wait till 70th min for his usual subs.

A few of Arsenal's main players nowhere to be seen so far today.

Dont worry still 10 mins for Gunners to find 2 goals as someone said City will drop points and Arsenal will win title from under their noses. 🤪🤣

Ben White has played as if he is in a daze.

Mitoma has ran rings around him.

His lack of pace clearly a problem today.

Pathetic collapse, just like last season.

No shock when manager and captain are mentally weak. That mentality is in entire squad

Mate, you have been spot on throughout this season, and have clearly been vindicated through your knowledge, insight, and Arsenal bottling it.

My personal commiserations to you, and just you.

Saka also went missing which is his speciality when crunch games are on. Brighton tore them a new one. Super impressed with the way they play.

Whole team has been poor today, after city won earlier, Arsenal clearly didn't fancy turning up here. Weak mentality, throwing all these cups away and now the league. But their will be no accountability as club will dress it up as progress.

Saka has been poor since international break but Arteta will keep him on pitch, this is when top managers would have taken tough decisions and changed the team.

3-0 Brighton, pathetic stuff.

Players should be ashamed of today's performance

Zinchenko's injury isn't bad news. It means Arteta has no option but to pick Tierney over his favourite, Zinchenko at left back.

I hope you can now realize why Arteta plays Zinchenko over this generic, boring LB who can only do the basics and offers zero attacking threat and penetration.

He is a homeless man’s Robertson, Chillwell etc. nothing more than a decent backup.

Zinchenko is a dodgy defender but he is brilliant on the ball and crucial to Arsenal’s attacking play. Tierney is not 1% the footballer Zinchenko is and Arsenal would have been at least 15 points behind City if he was playing over Zinchenko all season.

A real choke job. Those draws against West Ham and Southampton totally unforgiveable.

Think Arsenal playing with 10. Troussard playing with a Brighton top under his Jersey.

Brighton 3 win at Emirates in last 5 league games, shameful stuff from Arsenal

Congratulations to all the non-Arsenal fans who were crying left, right and center all season because they couldn’t digest the fact that Arsenal were challenging for the title.

Also congratulations to all the Arsenal fans who wanted Arteta sacked last season and thought he would never take Arsenal forward.

They have been hoping and praying for Arsenal to fall short all season so that they can be vindicated. Apparently, being right is more important than seeing their team succeed.

What a brilliant season for Arsenal. Proved everyone wrong because not a single person expected Arsenal to challenge for the title this season.

It is incredible how Arteta has turned things around and turned Arsenal into a genuine heavyweight again.

It was disappointing to see Arsenal fizzle out in the end after leading the table for so long, but you have to look at the bigger picture. Arsenal is back and now it is time to do some solid business in the summer and plug the gaps so that Arsenal can make a serious charge at the title next season.

Extremely proud of Arteta and his team. Well done. Looking forward to next season.

Mate, you have been spot on throughout this season, and have clearly been vindicated through your knowledge, insight, and Arsenal bottling it.

My personal commiserations to you, and just you.

Manager always crumbles under pressure with no plan B, A captain with zero leadership skills. Most of all the squad depth was exposed because of hit and miss TWvin summer and in winter.

Another TW like that from Edu in summer and club won't be winning any trophies.

Arteta could easily end up like another brendon Rogers.

Challenging? Bit different to saying they were going to WIN the title, it was in the bag etc.

Enjoy your humble pie! Your Arrogance once again your downfall.

Looks like Brighton will be in europa or conference league next season, so congrats to them. A well run club, they sell keys players and replace them well. They do have to show ambition in transfer market if they want to go up a level.

Good to see a smaller club do well.

Crying left right and centre? 🤣
I’m actually ecstatic. IMMY69 I know i said I wouldn’t but shall I revel in my glory or wait till title is officially wrapped up which should happen next week?

Non Arsenal fans were speaking the truth, Arsenal were not going to win the league and FLUKED a top position because of the World Cup break! Basically, attrition Arsenal.

They say time is great healer, but time exposed Arsenal for what they are, and only one Arsenal fan called it from day one - Amjid Javed - hats off to you sir.

Really lame performance today. LFC ran City to the wire regularly over the past few years but Arsenal gassed out like a unfit boxer after round 9.

I think if Arteta was a little smarter in the games v Saints and West Ham, the title race would still be alive, its dead as a dodo now .
