Maybe end of the season we can revisit and see how they both got on.

My 1st choice was Isak. But if you offered me Eze and Gyokores for the same amount I wouldn't be disappointed either.

Solid point about the price difference. Isak ended up costing Liv a lot. They didn’t care but that was a lot of money spent.
 
Isak is a better all-round player than Gyokeres. There's no doubt about this.

As goal scorers, time will tell.

Gyokeres has a superior goal scoring record than Isak for Sweden but you could argue the new Liverpool signing doesn't get the same opportunities to score goals like Gyokeres does, as he plays just behind him as a support striker in a 4-4-2.

They are now both playing in the PL where the pressure and expectation to deliver week in and week out is always going to be a challenge. How they fare in the league will be the acid test.
 
Gyokeres has played 3 games, judge him at end of the season and what impact he has on making difference on the fine margin games.

If Arsenal keep playing keep the ball hostage terrorist football then he's going to look average.

It's down the manager on 15M a year, to get the best out of him

The biggest worry is this incompetent manager turned a prime Aubamayeng, who was scoring at same rate as salah at the time, into a left wingback.

It's no coincidence that Aubamayeng has pretty much scored regularly at almost every club he's been at. Yet Arteta decide play negative football even when he had a striker in his prime in his team

Unless Arsenal get mote creative, Gyokeres will end up like a chamakh. Purely because the managers retarded tactics.

If Arsenal start playing fast flowing football then Gyokeres will score lots of goals.

Time for the over paid, failing manager to do his job

Arsenal have some real good attacking players now and in defense they are safe as ever. Will be very tough for any team to defeat them at Emirates.

Three things that made me apprehensive were

1 - his penalty incident at Chelsea, awful look

2 - Arsenal generally doing poor business with Chelsea

3 - Arteta making a mess with getting wingers in the past - Willian, Sterling

Yeah I'm enjoying my holiday, I've seen we won 3-0. Not watched the game.

But I'm sure same over reaction, like after the leeds game from certain members of fan base. Club might run out of spaces for new statues with all these new legends being hailed after 1 good game.

They've scored a late winner every game... Credit to them - twice against 10 men to.

I mean nowhere near convincing but they've got 4 out 4 and won't care. But signs are there Liverpool won't just walk it this season. Keep on their track and they'll feel the pressure.

Early days... Race doesn't start until Feb so teams just have to be in touching distance of the leader.

I still think we will win it. Yesterday was without Saka odegaard and Saliba who are all regulars. Heck even Rice didn't start. Good signs

We could actually change the whole 11 for cup games and still put out a decent team and expect a win.
 
I am confident that Arsenal will win the league. This team has been very, very close since 2022 and the three areas that plagued them have all been addressed: (1) not having a killer in front of goal (2) weak depth (3) Martinelli as first choice LW.

There is almost no drop off in quality now if a first choice player is out. That’s huge.
 
The international break and the forest win have put Arsenal back in a good place.

Going forward till Saka and Odegaard come back, Madueke and Merino slot in, no problem.

Hopefully no more injuries. Arteta is a bit careless with load management and injuries it seems.

Target for now should be to make the top 8 and skip the playoffs. New CL format takes too long before round of 16 even starts.

Apart from hoping to finish in the top 8, nothing else to plan for at this time. Consider that eventual winners PSG finished 13th in the group stage last year while Liv ‘won’ the group stage.

Agree. Making top 8 shouldn't be a problem for LFC, City and Arsenal but it will be interesting to see how these teams now start to rotate. Bilbao lost their previous home match to Alves, they are struggling atm, making it an easy win for Arsenal.

I was wondering if Arsenal fans are confident of the double.

Bilbao is a sort of team Arsenal should be winning away against without breaking a sweat.

And I am not as optimistic as Mamoon to win the PL but I agree that this time around it feels different when the drop off in quality is not that significant if a first teamer gets injured.

CL too Arsenal lost to eventual winners. Such a good run. A similar run this year works for me.

The way I see it, Arsenal needs to be in the discussions, finishing second in PL and a good run in CL works for me. More than that is achievable this year with the squad depth we got currently.

Good away performance with some key players missing again. Martinelli made an impact for once - maybe it was the kick up the backside he needed.

I would like to see Eze in the 10 which would mean Martinelli on the left or even Trossard. I thought it was perfect time with Odegaard being out.

Going forward I think the front 3 will be Eze Gyok Saka however just test Eze at 10.

I will be honest - I didnt like our midfield yesterday. Rice Zubi Merino has not worked so far. Need a natural playmaker in there

Martinelli or Trossard shouldn’t start anymore. It just doesn’t work. If Odegaard isn’t fit for Sunday, we will probably see the same starting XI.

Arsenal should beat City. They are defensively circumspect and if Arsenal can keep Haaland at bay, which they are more capable of than any other team right now, they should get the W.

The real highlight so far is Mosquera. What a monstrous CB and it’s unbelievable that Arsenal got him for so cheap in today’s work. He is easily worth 50m+. It’s a stroke of genius by Berta.

Not having Saliba for Sunday doesn’t even bother me anymore, because this guy is more than capable of dealing with Haaland along with Gabriel.

If the squad depth is that good, there should be no excuses not to get a domestic cup final as minimum starting point, win the league and CL.

Very good control and lovely finish . On his day he’s a Brazilian . Huge mistake tho allowed Arsenal to open the scoring but it was only a matter of time .

I watched the 1st half last night, before going go to the Airport. This midfield 3 just lacks creativity collectively, it wasn't a shock it was toothless in first half.

Most of Arsenal half chances in 1st half came from direct balls out wide into channels for Gyokeres who was excellent in making runs into space.

The lack of creativity will in midfield will get exposed this season against better sides in PL and CL

If you look away from the CL into the PL. There are lot of teams who are sub standard, you have 3 promoted sides, then West ham, wolves, man united who are utter tripe. Brentford will be nowhere near the level of before either. So people getting carried away in performances vs Leeds and forrest, are in for a reality check. There are 7 or 8 teams atleast now in PL, where Arsenal, Liverpool and City will ease hammer this season.

Arsenal issues again isn't hammering teams like this. Will see if actual improvements come in games where it's tight and limited chances. Will then see if these so called "new legends" after the forrest and Leeds game are real deal.

Newcastle (away) will tell us more about this squad and team then pasting garbage like Leeds and forrest.

4 Out of the last 5 games away to Newcastle (4 PL and 1LC) the teams struggled to create chances or even shots on goal. Will see if the so called new midfield and attack wingers are real deal when we face a team which knows how to defend, be physically and has a treat the other way. Beat Newcastle away, that will be 1st sign this teams improved from last seasons issues that were regularly exposed.

What is a "good run in CL"? 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️

Its a cup competition as a big team you either win it or you don't

A good cup run is like a team like harrogate Town (non league) reaching FA cup 4th or 5th round. That would be an achievement for thar club.

Yet Arsenal with a 1BN squad, 15M manager are now being judged on a good run in Europe.

It's actually embarrassing. Fact it is no one has excuses left. But the cheerleaders will find something to hide behind

Haha AJ takes it easy on me.

I have a theory, I think many gunners ppers also live in the uk, have a lot of fellow gunners around, go to matches, and eventually end up with a higher passion level.

I have only been to the emirates stadium once and haven’t seen an Arsenal match in person. So maybe I see things from more of a distance. A good season means something different to me I guess.

I would much prefer Nwaneri playing instead of Merino.

We saw Merino in CAM (when Odegaard was injured) against Newcaste at SJP last season and more recently at Anfield. We saw how ineffective he was.

Arsenal play Newcastle at SJP next weekend. I don't want to see Arteta make the same mistake again.

4 wins 1 well-fought loss at Anfield.

Good run in CL works because as you know we have zero CLs. Lost to eventual winners in SF after eliminating RM. This year will good see how we put away Bilbao.

Everybody wants the PL. There can only be one winner. Being alright with not finishing first allows me to enjoy the season.

The way I see it, Liverpool are getting the rub of the green and have managed 12 points without playing anywhere near our best. This is a huge concern when you consider who Arsenal are up against during this weekend and also the following weekend.

If we don't win our next two games against City and Newcastle and at the same time Liverpool don't drop points, I think mentally it's going to be difficult for Arteta and his squad to bounce back when you're 5 points+ behind the leaders after 6 games. This is why no one should be getting carried away just yet.

Doesn't matter that Arsenal haven't won a CL before and therefore a "good run" is just a cop out. The manager has spent over a billion on this squad and is 15M a year. Time to deliver, simple as that. Your acting like this is some non league team trying to win the FA cup.

Bilbao are nothing special, Same Bilbao team that got humilated by the worst man united team in over 35 years last seasin. We saw same over excitement last season after sporting Lisbon. A team who were unbeaten for a year when facing other Portuguese cab drivers, bin men and farmers. Ultimately when it came down to it Arsenal bottled the semi final vs PSG.

Arsenal entire "progression" in europe last season essentially was beating Madrid and then being exposed by PSG.

Not sure exactly "enjoying the season" is when team isn't winning anything.

Then again the club captain keeps getting shoulders Injuries, maybe if he was lifting trophies. His weakling body would be able to cope when he falls on the floor

Thanks - Liverpool haven't looked great agreed, but they are winning games whilst transitioning new players into starting line up. The Merseyside Derby won't be easy for them at the weekend. But they are finding ways to win games, they will find their form at some point. Plus isak will give them more firepower.

We should beat City on Sunday, whilst City do look good in midfield and up front, their defence on transitions is awful. Their two full backs are league 2 level defenders. Whoever starts on wings for Arsenal should have a field day. As long as we don't give stupid chances away, we should win game 2-0 or 3-1 on Sunday (2 goal margin).

Newcastle will be tough as physically their midfield will look to bully ours, ultimately these will be the games where eze, Gyokeres etc.. will need to make a difference as chances will be limited.

If we play like we did at OT and Anfield, when we play Newcastle then we will drop points. Can't just set up in these games not to lose.

Liverpool will drop points at somepoint, unlike like last season, Arsenal have to take Advantage when they do.

90 points is usually the mark to win title (Liverpool won the league with 5 games to spare last season, so could have got to 90 points if they had to).
That means 9 or 10 Games is the maximum you can drop points in. So we we can't afford to drop points in next 2 games. Some people might be happy with 4 points. But the Newcastle game is ons where we have to see improvements in

Arsenal haven't won PL for 20+ years, but your happy with club spending billion and manager on 15M a year to finish 2nd.

One has to set high standards to achieve them and as professionals they must do that. As a fan though, I cherish the progress so much.

You gave the examples of City and Liverpool, they spent money and made it count, won titles.

But look at all the other clubs trying and not getting the big prize utd, chelsea, and even PSG until very recently. Ultimately one has to weigh the probabilities of complete success, partial success and no success. What Arsenal is achieving is high partial success which is really difficult and doesn’t happen without 35+ wins across competitions in a season.

But I agree the teams that are the real deal win the actual trophies and not happy with just competing.

Football goes in cycles where one or two teams will dominate a given time period. Regardless Of what time period that is, those teams in that era are judged on what they win.

Loosely naming Chelsea and United is nothing more then a cop out. Even in their shambolic state united have still won trophies. Chelsea the same have won trophies.

Look at the late 90s Arsenal and united battled it out. But Liverpool, Leeds, Newcastle were the ones that were missing out on league titles.

Thanks for the advice and it does hit home. I give the same advice too to folks debating stuff that try not getting labelled. Those labels could be difficult to get rid of.

However here in this discussion I think everybody’s been nice to me so far lol and I don’t expect any of my discussions to get heated cuz I got too much respect for the old timers at pp. I’ll diffuse any tension.

Btw how are you feeling about hosting City on Sunday?

If we divide the 20-21 years since the invincible season into 4 quarters
2004-2010, 2010-2015, 2015-2020, 2020-2025 I think you’ll agree that the last 5 years were the most ‘successful’. We didn’t win trophies last 5 years but oh they were so much more fun the 15 years prior to that. Arteta deserves credit for bringing us out of that rut and out of our ‘banter club’ era.

So yeah I have brought my expectations down for Arsenal. The hard truth is gonna hurt but fact is without a single CL win, no league title in last 20 years, Arsenal are not as big as RM, Barca, Bayern heck we are not even as big as Utd or Liv. Fan entitlement is not grounded in the club’s reality.

I always maintain that we should win all our home games regardless of the opposition. Same for Sunday.

I fear Mikel will use the midfield of Rice Zubi and Merino. I just hope for his sake we get the 3 points if he goes with this midfield. Because if he does go with this midfield and we draw or lose the knives will rightfully be out.

I'd like Eze in the 10.

Setting up in a defensive manner in midfield will get exposed at somepoint, whilst the bench attacking options might be better. Can't get into a situation where a team is needing subs bench to bail the team out.

The maximum number of games that points can be dropped in to win a title in current times, is around 8 or 9 max (draws / defeats). Whilst Arsenal don't have to be recklessly open when playing, setting up not lose is going to ultimate get you top 4 or 5. But will not win a title.

We have a good defence, yet playing defensive players in midfield is just over kill. Cowardice approach.

In regards to home games, yeah we should look to beat all comers. Playing rice and Zubimendi in these games is fine in bigger games. But a more attack minded midfield is needed in other games.

City are awful defensively in transition. Arsenal should be looking to expose City's two league 2 level full backs. Both are awful, get the ball forward quickly and into the channels. Khusanov imparticular looks like rash and error prone player.

Regardless of Liverpools result vs Everton, Arsenal need to set up to win Sundays game.

Anyone with a functional brain can see that 2022 onwards has been the best period for the club since 2006, because this is the first era in all these years that Arsenal have played like a proper but club and have mounted multiple title challenges, and have started the league campaigns with the desire to win the league.

This is more significant than winning domestic cups but being moons away from competing for the league. If winning trophies is the only thing that matters, then there wouldn’t have been a Wenger Out movement in the 2010s. He won 3 FA Cups in 4 years but the fans were unhappy because he wasn’t fighting for the league.

If his last 4 years would have been like Arteta’s last 4 years, he wouldn’t have been forced to quit in 2018.

Three consecutive second place finishes is success. What we are witnessing currently is sustained performance. What do you have to say about Arsenal conceding least number of goals in the league season after season.

Arteta is not delivering the absolute success you desire but he’s getting almost there every year. For a club with a history of winning league titles like RM/barca or Bayern that’s not good enough and fans can ‘demand’ success. But not Arsenal fans, we don’t have the right. Cuz he’s the one who got us back to winning ways. The amount of pleasure I derive from those 35+ wins and numerous clean sheets is absolutely incomparable to what we suffered in the misery years. I am old enough to know that enjoying stuff while it lasts is the prudent approach. Arteta deserves praise. He’s not perfect, he hasn’t won anything (cl or pl), but he’s GOOD ENOUGH for Arsenal.

Arsenal is the classiest club in the world by a distance but it has almost zero European history and hasn’t won a league title in 20 years. We should accept who we are.

Even with the wengerout movement Arsenal fans got ahead of themselves. That was never on and I for one never got on board with it. Agree that if Wenger was doing in his latter years what Arteta is delivering he wouldn’t have been forced to quit.

Utd fans also thought they were owed success. Utd sacked Mourinho thinking they somehow belonged at a higher level than where he was taking them. Look at them now.

Only 1 team win is gonna win the league every year, I am okay with my team being number two. I’d still celebrate their 100s of smaller successes than being fixated with the big prize.

Completely agree. Great to see a proper fan who doesn’t have a toxic agenda and isn’t moaning all the time. Arsenal fans are the ungrateful and whiny fans in the world.

The club is at a fantastic place right now and absolutely ready to win big things. How can anyone who lived through the 2006-2021 period not be happy with where the club is right now is beyond me.

Big clubs are big clubs based on trophies won, not 2nd place finishes.

I would like to add that although the OTT toxicity (mainly triggered by AFTV scum) was uncalled for, it was time for Wenger to leave.

Post 2012, the club had the financial muscle to compete and Wenger spent quite a bit of money in his last 5 years but mainly on poor players or players who weren’t the right fit.

He should have won a league title in that period or at least had Arsenal completely properly. Surrendering the league to Leicester when the gap was only 1 point in February was the final nail.

You support Arsenal , one of the biggest clubs in world football, in the top 10 for sure , along with City and Liverpool from England. You only are competing with 2 teams . You have a record net spend this season , higher than Liverpool. You have a manager in his 6th year.
