Aston Villa | 2022/23 Season

It’s a three horse race for the ECL, after Brighton dropped points to Everton and we beat Tottenham, it has made the 7th position very competitive.

I’d be happy to take a point at Anfield KingKhanWC very very tough game with LFC back in form.

Our final game of the season against Brighton might be a knockout for the ECL.

Tottenham have games scheduled against Brentford and Leeds, we are level with them on points. They should beat Brentford at home but Leeds could be a tough game away, they will be motivated to get out the bottom 3

It's in your hands albeit 2 very tough games, do you think you will get 4 points or even 6?

Am confident of 3 with the home game against Brighton, it’s not easy at Villa Park and the buoyant atmosphere will be magnified. LFC beat us at home this season

Liverpool will be a tough one for you, hope you do make Europe ahead of spurs

It will depend on Spurs and Brighton of cousre. Spurs have an early kick off against Brentford at home. Early kick offs are hard to predict but Ivan Toney being suspended is a big loss for Brentford. If Spurs lose or draw, Villa have a good chance of pipping them. If not Brighton can be overtaken, they have an easy home game v Southampton but will then face City(home) and Villa away. It will come down to a straight shootout at Villa Park imo. I would go with Villa winning at home, the atmosphere will be charged and with Villas good form esp in defence , a 1-0 win is on the cards.

Conference league is a good step up for a Villa and a competition Villa should be one of the fav to win it.

Saturday will be tough, LFC's forward attack are all in decent form, the team has not conceded many goals in the last few matches and of course Anfield will be loud because its the last home game , along with the last match for James Milner and Bobby Firmino, the players will be like animals to win this game.

A point for Villa on Sat would be huge.

Spurs lost, you got your point at Anfield.

As long as you win your last game of season you will be in conference league, which would be huge achievement.

You should have beaten Liverpool today

Amazing result for Villa, Emery has really excelled asVilla Boss, guess what Arsenal job was a real learning curve for him anyways Chelsea should have gone for him

Anyone coming in after Wenger, was going to struggle at Arsenal. In his 1st season with just 50M to spend he got 70 points, 1 point of top 4, Got to league cup and EL final. Arsenal board didn't give him players he wanted. Emery is a top coach and if he gets Villa into europe will be a top effort. If Villa board back him with funds, Villa will get even better.

Emery's sterling impact

Villa executed their gameplan to perfection and were on the verge of a famous victory.

The visitors defended stubbornly while also posing a threat on the counter-attack and despite the disappointment of the setback, they have guaranteed themselves a top-10 finish for the first time in 12 years.

Manager Emery has done a superb job since replacing Steven Gerrard, long ago moving past the mandate of keeping the side in the league to becoming European contenders.

They took the lead through Ramsey's delightfully placed finish and could have gone 2-0 ahead had Alisson not stood tall to deny the midfielder a second. The Brazil goalkeeper also gathered a low shot from John McGinn.

Villa may have been lucky not to be down to 10 men in the first half though, when defender Tyrone Mings caught Gakpo in the chest with a high challenge and the video assistant referee decided the yellow card awarded by the referee was sufficient.

Villa have now won just one of their last 11 games against the Reds - that famous 7-2 victory at Villa Park under Dean Smith - but this game showed the enormous progress the side have made under Emery.

Aston Villa are weighing up a potential loan move for Manchester United and France attacker Anthony Martial, 27, next season

Please sir can you do us a favour against Totts James :afridi

If Leeds beat Tottenham, Villa qualify regardless

Unai gets so much stick, I have family who follow the sport religiously / support Arsenal and I felt like the hate he gets is so unfair, they’ve made him out to be a mid table specialist. It’s a little harsh because good coaches learn from their experiences

Chelsea have huge ego’s, they need to humble themselves

iA we do it, am trying to sort tickets but so expensive. That would be an insane achievement really because euro footy was my hope next season, now if we don’t do it I will be disappointed lol

Yes, that missed pen hope it doesn’t haunt us, but at Anfield I’d have taken a point before the game. We’re a momentum team so I hope we take that into the final game of the season against a spicy team

He got treated so unfairly when he was at Arsenal. Everyone was making fun of his accent. His “good evening” became a tool of mockery.

Aston Villa defender Alex Moreno could miss the start of the next Premier League season after undergoing surgery on a hamstring injury.

The 29-year-old Spanish left-back went off injured during the 1-1 draw at Liverpool on Saturday.

"He's going to be out for two to three months. He's going to be back in early August," said Villa boss Unai Emery.

Moreno joined Villa in a £13.2m move from Real Betis in January and has played 19 times in the Premier League.

He will miss the home match with Brighton on Sunday, where a Villa victory would take them into the Europa Conference League and secure European football for the first time since 2010.

"In an unexpected way, this hamstring injury came to me," said Moreno on Twitter.

"It was bad news since we were in the final stretch of the season and struggling to get in to European competitions.

"I felt pain and a sensation I had never felt before, I knew something was not going well, but thanks to the club staff we were able to operate on Tuesday, everything went well.

"This Sunday I will not be able to be in the last game of the season but I will continue to cheer on the team from the stands at Villa Park. Together we will make it.

"A different summer is here where I will give 200% of myself to come back stronger than ever."

Lucas Digne, who replaced Moreno in the starting line-up at Anfield, is in line to start against Brighton.

The 2023-24 Premier League season begins on 12 August.

Villa 1-0 vs brighton, win here and they make Europe.

What an achievement would be after Emery took over.

2-0 Villa - Watkins who has been outstanding this calender year so far

shaz619 - villa in Europe, congrats

Aston Villa beat Brighton at a raucous Villa Park to secure a return to European football after a 13-year absence.

Villa needed to win to secure seventh place in the Premier League and earn a spot in the play-offs for the third-tier Europa Conference League.

They made a dream start as, after Leon Bailey had hit the crossbar, they took the lead in the eighth minute when the club's Player of the Year Douglas Luiz slid the ball home from Jacob Ramsey's pullback.

Ramsey got another assist 18 minutes later when he collected a through ball and, just as away goalkeeper Jason Steele slid at his feet, knocked a sideways pass to Ollie Watkins for the England striker to score his 15th league goal of the season.

Brighton thought they had scored when Deniz Undav volleyed in, but Julio Enciso was ruled offside by the video assistant referee before he crossed for his team-mate.

But in the 38th minute a VAR decision went Undav's way when he scored following a quickly taken free-kick by Pascal Gross, with the assistant referee saying it was offside before being overruled by officials at Stockley Park.

Villa, who won the European Cup in 1982, last played in European competition in 2010, losing 4-3 on aggregate to Austrian side Rapid Vienna in the Europa League play-offs.

Despite a nervous second half against Brighton, they held on to the victory they needed to spark celebrations in the stands.

Nice one mate, was nervous the second half, credit to Unai and the team for their positivity and aggression despite taking the lead

It’s the stuff of dreams, to be sat in the dark for so long, were relegation bound and now back in Europe! I hope we go from strength to strength and don’t slack

Emery is smart enough to know what players he needs to go up a level, wudnt be shocked if you went after Tierney, ESR and also players maybe from Leeds, Leicester and Southampton.

You should fancy doing well in conference league

Defender Ashley Young will leave Aston Villa following the end of his contract this summer after a two-year spell.

The former England right-back played 32 times this season as Villa came seventh in the Premier League to qualify for the Europa Conference League.

The 37-year-old re-joined Villa in 2021 from Inter Milan on an initial one-year deal before his contract was extended.

He played for the club from 2007-2011 before joining Manchester United, and played 250 games in his two spells.

Prior to his return to Villa Park, Young was part of Inter's Serie A winning side during his one year stint for the Italian club.

He also enjoyed international and domestic success with United, having won the Premier League, Europa League, FA Cup and EFL Cup at Old Trafford.

Sad to see him leave, a proper Villain, did a tremendous job this season. His experience and dynamism on the pitch will be missed, a proper pro, his age doesn’t really show. I guess this means we are going to be signing a RB for sure now. I get that age was not on side and we need to look at the bigger picture but he would have remained a valued member of the squad, he seemed keen to stay, I don’t know what could have caused his departure, money, more games? wouldn’t be surprised to see him in the PL again. Although, best way to go after helping send us to Europe, but no formal goodbye on the pitch, can’t have it all I suppose

Would be a good signing for Villa, Emery will recruit well in the summer.

He will do well at Villa under Emery.

Official: Aston Villa announce captain John McGinn has signed a new, long-term contract.

The midfielder’s new deal will see him remain at Villa Park until 2027.

Pau Torres: Aston Villa hold advanced talks with Villarreal for Spain defender

Aston Villa are in advanced talks with Villarreal with regards to signing centre-back Pau Torres.

Unai Emery is going back to his former side to take the 26-year-old to the Premier League in a deal that will cost Villa around £45m.

Torres has a release clause of €70m (£60.4m) but it's understood Villa have negotiated terms to suit them paying over a longer period of time so their initial payment falls below the release figure.

When the deal gets finalised - which is expected to be within the next 48 hours - Torres is set to undergo a medical and agree personal terms, which are not expected to be a problem.

Torres has been associated with Villarreal for 21 years, coming through the club's academy before breaking into the first team and forming part of the side which won the Europa League under Emery in 2021.

The centre-back, who has one year remaining on his existing contract, made 39 appearances for Villarreal last season and was part of the Spain squad which reached the round of 16 at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Unai Emery has been keen on Torres since his return to the Premier League and believes the defender can help take the squad to the next level as they look to cement their position of playing European football.
