The previous time that Australia and India clashed in a T20 game in Mohali, the format was not as evolved as it is now six years later. Back then, in the World T20, India won the semifinal through a thrilling chase that was headlined by the running between the wickets of Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni, in what was a measured and calculated batting display. It was a strategy dictated by the longer boundaries square of the wicket.

In the age of the T20 World Cup, that style has fewer and fewer takers. It is a style of gameplay that Rohit Sharma and Co. are trying to actively break away from, with the protagonist from then Virat Kohli being the centerpiece for the strike-rate debate.

Having recently struck form with a hundred against Afghanistan, Kohli has recused himself of some scrutiny which has now in turn turned towards KL Rahul, India's chosen opener ahead of Kohli. Rahul has come out stating that he's been working on upping his strike-rate a day ahead of the series opener against Australia.

Aaron Finch's men aren't exempted from that debate either, with eyes training on Steven Smith's impact in the format with his style of play. While Finch has backed him to come good, the series will act as an audition in ways as Australia get in without some of their mainstays like Mitchell Marsh, David Warner and Marcus Stoinis. The opportunity for Tim David, as a result, throws up more possibilities as they look to finalise their best eleven with a month to go for the start of the tournament.

India, with a fairly settled eleven, welcomes back Jasprit Bumrah and Harshal Patel - who had missed the Asia Cup - and thus will be at near full-strength. Whether they experiment with giving the likes of Deepak Chahar, a World Cup standby, some game time will be a question for the think-tank even as the Rishabh Pant or Dinesh Karthik question continues to hover around. And they will be hoping to answer those questions in the couple of series left before the World Cup.

When: Tuesday, September 20, 2022 at 19:00 IST

Where: PCA Stadium, Mohali

What to expect: The longer square boundaries and the possibility of dew will be factors taken into consideration at Mohali.

India

Tactic talk: The presence of a left-hander in the middle order is something that India have been very keen on. It proved to be a decisive factor for Pant jumping the queue ahead of Karthik when Jadeja was injured. But with the availability of Axar Patel, does the equation change once again? Will India have as much faith in Patel's batting abilities as they had in Jadeja's? And without too many left-handers in Australia, can Yuzvendra Chahal get ahead of R Ashwin?

Probable XI: KL Rahul, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant/Dinesh Karthik, Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, R Ashwin/Yuzvendra Chahal, Harshal Patel, Jasprit Bumrah

Australia

Tactic talk: The strike-rate question could throw up the possibilities of a tinkered batting order if needed. They too like India could consider breaking the glut of right-handers in the middle order by punting on the likes of Ashton Agar.

Probable XI: Aaron Finch, Matthew Wade, Steve Smith, Glenn Maxwell, Tim David, Cameron Green, Ashton Agar, Pat Cummins, Daniel Sams, Adam Zampa, Josh Hazlewood

What they said

No one is perfect. No one in the dressing room is perfect. Everyone's working towards something, everyone has a certain role to do. Obviously, strike-rates are taken on an overall basis. You'll never see when that batsman has played at a certain strike-rate, whether it was important for him to play at a 200-strike rate, or whether the team could have still won playing at a 100-120 strike rate - KL Rahul

We know the quality that Steve's got. He's one of the best players that has ever played the game over all formats of the game. So we know the skill that he's got and the game sense and the tactical nous that he's got. So we're really confident that regardless of what role he has to play within the structure of the squad, that he can do that very, very well - Aaron Finch

Aus batting is top notch but bowling is poor in this series.

Australia have won the toss and have opted to field

Aaron Finch: We're going to have a bowl first. It is about building up to the World Cup, and about getting some information about our boys. Really excited. You expect to be tested, hopefully some dew comes out. The pitch looks hard and flat. We have one change from out earlier XI. [And he goes on to name half his XI]

Rohit Sharma: It is an opportunity to test ourselves. Every game is a big game to learn. We got to learn so much in the last six-eight months on how to win games. This series will be no different for us to express ourselves. Looking at what happened in the Asia Cup, we had a chance to reflect on where we went wrong. This gives us an opportunity to correct ourselves as a group. Nothing changes in terms of our approach. Unfortunately there are some injuries in the squad. Bumrah is not playing, he will take a game's break and probably come back in the second and the third game. We have Axar and Chahal. Pant misses out.

India (Playing XI): Rohit Sharma(c), KL Rahul, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya, Dinesh Karthik(w), Axar Patel, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Harshal Patel, Umesh Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal

Australia (Playing XI): Aaron Finch(c), Cameron Green, Steven Smith, Glenn Maxwell, Josh Inglis, Tim David, Matthew Wade(w), Pat Cummins, Nathan Ellis, Adam Zampa, Josh Hazlewood

Playing at home. Should be an easy win for India. Hopefully toss excuse won't be used here. :inti

Indian bowling is a joke. A past it Bhuvi, A trundler Harshal, a joke in Chahal and Umesh Yadav.

All trundlers and a very expensive spinner.

India is king of Bilaterals...expect us to win it. Come world cup, we will choke again :p

Pant should have played today. He is must in Australian pitches...so should have given game time here. 40 year DK will not be successful in Australian conditions anyway.

Pant should have played today, it is a crime to not play him vs Australia, he would have got standing ovation. :inti

But these are not Australian pitches. There are plenty of matches yet to be played. And he has got enough game time lol. Let him relax and others play. :inti

Looks like KL is a different beast when there is no pressure!

I think he is good on fast pitches but not so good with strike rate on slower pitches. Having said this, he must perform in Australia in WT20 to prove his worth.

Oh yeah! I didn't think about that he failed in the last two multi- tournaments which might have something to do with those slower UAE pitches. Looking forward to seeing his performance in Australia.

Expect bilateral bullies like Sky and Rahul to perform well.

7 million watching this random bilateral against Australia . Australia really is a popular opponent for Indian fans :inti

Pandya showing why he is a fantastic LOI cricketer and arguably the best LOI all rounder to come from India after Kapil Dev. :inti

And Pandya is scoring faster than SKY, treating Cummins like Aavesh Khan

Yeah. Good observation. He's not particularly good when the ball doesn't come on to the bat and grips in the pitch.

Lol, DK the finisher, the dinosaur. When will we get rid of him?

Fake finisher will always get exposed...he will be out after India kicked out of world cup

Only we can afford a fake cricketer like DK for so many years.

Even someone like Shoaib Malik is miles ahead of him in all departments of the game.

Sensational batting from Hardik.

Why can't he bat like this in pressure games?

These performances don't matter one bit after us being regularly out of world tourneys in first or second rounds!

Guys like Ashwin and dk will play the next T20 World Cup too .....these PPL have much influence in BCCI

He must be asking why can't I get pitches like these in pressure games? :inti

Always knew this is a good batting pitch considering the avg first innings score but for some posters here, it became a flat road after hardik smashing it around. coping mechanism.

Some of dk fans were fuming that dhoni destroyed his career lol😂😂😂

Whatever he scores he will leak in his crappy bowling hardik

I don’t have too much trust on our bowling despite good score

Bhuvi opening the bowling with the keeper standing up and gets smashed for 6 first ball....rather have the spinners bowl then

Ghar ka Pandya, Bilateral Baadsha, Gareebon ka Sobers… khela re khela ghar pe Khela.

Charitable Umesh gave 4 4 4 4 to Green who is opening for the first time in any format

Rohit Sharma is going to faint during the world cup with this magic team and coach

Rohit Sharma is going to cry during the world cup with this magic team and coach

Yes good thing is Asia cup showed us fans not to expect much, so atleast I'll be not be that hurt with early exit.

Rohit Sharma plz don't open the innings ...better play as a middle order batsman we need u as Hitman in the death overs... open with pant and rahul or sky....but I know this won't happen
