India will be especially motivated to start well against Australia in the first ODI in Mumbai as they look to avenge the rare home series defeat they suffered against the same opposition last year.

Overview

India v Australia
1st ODI
Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai
Tuesday, 14 January; 1:30pm local, 8am GMT

"We were more motivated to win today because of the fact that we lost the series in India," captain Virat Kohli said after the Men in Blue's excellent 36-run win over Australia in the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2019 match at The Oval. He was responding to a question about whether India's performance in the game was boosted by memories of the painful loss against the same opponents in the Sydney semi-final in the 2015 tournament.

India, particularly Kohli, had good reason to feel aggrieved by that series defeat in early 2019. It was India's first loss at home under Kohli's captaincy in six series, and it came against an understrength Australian side, lacking stars such as Steve Smith, David Warner and Mitchell Starc. The fact that Australia were 2-0 down before winning the next three games must have inflicted more pain.

Now, 10 months later, India have an opportunity to settle scores. It certainly won't be an easy task given that apart from the troika of key players mentioned above, the visiting party also features Marnus Labuschagne, who will be keen to extend his run-glut to the ODI format after a record-breaking Test summer back home. It will be interesting to see whether Australia hand him his debut cap in the first ODI in Mumbai, which can be a very batsman-friendly venue.

Both teams enter the series on the back of terrific form. India have just brushed aside Sri Lanka 2-0 in a T20I series after having convincingly won both T20I and ODI series against West Indies. Australia's limited-overs form has been pretty good too. They won each of their five completed T20Is against Sri Lanka and Pakistan during the home season. But they will be fully aware that facing India in fifty-over cricket will be a different beast altogether.

India's bowling attack was a touch expensive during the series against West Indies, but they will hope that the return of a fit-again Jasprit Bumrah helps plug that area of concern.

Remember the last time

The teams last faced off in the World Cup match at The Oval. India got off to a wonderful start, courtesy of openers Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma, who put on 127 for the first wicket. Dhawan went on to make a fine 117 and Kohli contributed a brisk 82. Hardik Pandya and MS Dhoni hit a flurry of boundaries to prop India to 352/5. Warner, Smith and Carey hit fifties but none were able to convert it into a big one and Australia were bowled out for 316 in the full 50 overs.

What they said

Kane Richardson (Australia): "India in India is always the biggest challenge and after what happened last year, they're going to be ready for it. So the confidence is up but the home team is always the favourite. We are the underdogs."

Conditions

The day will start out warm but it gets cooler as the evening sets in. Dew can be a big factor at this time of the year, and Australia's decision to practice with wet balls in the lead-up to the first game might come in handy. The Mumbai pitch tends to be batsman-friendly and combined with small boundaries can make for a run-fest.

India Squad: Virat Kohli (c), Rishabh Pant (wk), Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan, Lokesh Rahul, Shreyas Iyer, Manish Pandey, Kedar Jadhav, Ravindra Jadeja, Shivam Dube, Mohammed Shami, Jasprit Bumrah, Shardul Thakur, Kuldeep Yadav, Navdeep Saini, Yuzvendra Chahal

Australia Squad: Aaron Finch (c), Alex Carey (wk), David Warner, Steven Smith, Marnus Labuschagne, D Arcy Short, Ashton Turner, Josh Hazlewood, Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Kane Richardson, Adam Zampa, Ashton Agar, Peter Handscomb

Wankhede? If it behaves like it always does, the team that chases will win. It is a very high scoring ground. boundaries, sixes will be flying. Shardul Thakur might score a 100 with ball lol

Though I’ve been hyping him up a lot but you are right lol at Wankhede against aussies the same will happen to thakur what happened to thakur in Indian movies

Looking forward to this, the third place medal match we never got at the WC :kohli

Bumrah, Shami and Saini will be the seamers. No Shardul.

Australia playing full strength side in a bilateral ODI series after quite a while.

Should be a block buster series but I think Australia pacers will come down with a few knocks and India will win it.

Iam not watching this series unless Thala comes back,Iam missing his tuk tuk :ssmith.

india have actually lost odi series to australia at home several times. like last year and also in 2016 I believe.

Australi have always been a far better odi side than a test side. Although they did dominate in tests too.

5 time champions, no other team has won more than 2 I believe.

Australia have won the toss and will bowl first against India in Mumbai.

Even 2009-10

Good decision to bowl first. Chasing is easier under lights. But then again doesn't it swing under lights at wankhede? Saini over thakur and this would have been a better Indian lineup .

We won in 2017 and 2013 but yeah generally our ODI pitches are flat with true bounce and the Aussies are superb on such wickets.

I cant believe they dropped saini. Maybe thakur is there for his power hitting ability.

Great to see Mitchell Starc playing bilateral ODIs,he rarely plays bilateral ODIs these days.

Have to feel for handscomb. Marnus has taken his odi spot.

Handscomb is quality in odis and deserves every game.

But if he played at no. 5 aus would have no power hitter

winning odi jamodi doesn't mean much though because most teams tailor their programs to peak for the world cup. Mostly jamodi's bilaterals are all a platform to find the perfect balance in the team. Perfect combination.

In saying that pakistan, australia are the 2 teams that have won in India since 2000.

south africa won their lone series in 2015.

Don't recall anyone else post 2000.

pre 2000 west Indies used to dominate india as well in india.

7 buddy. 2 champions trophy right? or was it one.

india are second with 4.
I was referring to the ODI WC, the others aren't anywhere as important.

CT is below that in importance and T20 WC means very little.

I would say t20 world cup is above champions trophy. yea I agree champions trophy doesn't mean much. but winning the world cup and champions trophy shows dominance. Australia and india are the only ones to do it.

England I bet won't win the champions trophy in 2021.

heat should not be a problem for Australia especially with Australia recording high temperatures recently !!

Starc leaking but looks half a chance to take a wicket. India attacking him. Interesting.

But bilateral test series which no one really watch fully means something?

yes. test cricket is real cricket. every test match matters. test is the true twst of endurance, skill and ability.

csnt compare rubbish 50 over game to a test match.

Well I dont deny that about Test Cricket being real, but it's not practical IMO. Americans, Germans, and many others realized this long ago.

My biggest problem with Cricket is that it has way too many formats unlike other sports. Since test Cricket is the only format relevant that should be the only format in existence. Why tease with ODIs and T20s?

inside 15 overs there's almost 60 dot balls ie 10 maiden overs .. That's poor batting TBH...

agreed. I think 2 is enough. maybe just do t20 and test. t20 for crowd pleasing. test to really test the quality of cricketers.

Icc should consider increasing the length of test matches to 10 days,With 4 innings per side,This not only will help in increasing the beauty of the format and will also help in testing the grit of the players and patience of the spectators as the test format is too small to test a players credential..

May be you have also noticed it here that the importance of formats changes for some fans depending on where your team is currently ranked in the ICC Rankings.

When your team is ranked at number 3-5 in tests, suddenly you will hear people saying things like test cricket is dying, nobody cares about it, T20 is the future blah blah. But when your team is ranked at number 4 in T20's also then T20 becomes fun cricket which no one takes seriously. :inti

I know you are being sarcastic but they should play test cricket only on weekends so that crowd can tune in. Only issues is day 3 and 4 will have to be played the week after. Cover the pitches till the following week but obviously this would depend on whether there will be other sporting events happening in that particular stadium. Gives players enough rest to prepare and perform in the second innings. In saying that it ruins the prestige of test cricket though. However that's probably the only way fans can behind their team as a 5 plus hour game on a weekday is guys not practical.

T20 is fun cricket outside of the wt20. No-one cares about it.

"You" guys shouldn't be too insecure about your no.1 T20 ranking though. "Your" team performed quite brilliantly to reach there.

No test has always been the premier format of cricket. Got nothing to do with india being number 1.

Even when india got thrashed in 2012 people were clamoring for changes to perform in test cricket specifically.

Test cricket has been mostly about the home team winning now. I don't think test cricket should be anymore now. 50 over is most competitive and exciting. And 20-20 should be used to expand the game. 50 over game is much better than t20 though.

Some high quality selfish cricket going on. when you send batsmen who both fight for the same spots this is what happens. this is such a road. Against spinners they are playing so slowly

This looks like a good match ... BTW Australian board is not worried about the situation like BCB board lol.

Practically don't think that's possible,It will only consume way more time than it already does for completing of a match..

India will lose very badly here for this stupid batting order.

We'll see if they can accelerate after this wicket.

They probably could have had us right under the hammer with only 1 wicket down in 25 overs but yes, the fact they didn't really stamp their authority has Oz just in the game still.

This is wankhede. Such a free scoring ground. Favorite place for big hitters. KL Rahul completely botched it with a selfish knock.

A selfish knock has come to an end. Batted purely for his 50 and got out before that.

I knew this softie was gonna crumble soon his face expressions were telling me lost me a bet too lol. As soon as he gets into 40s it looks like his mind goes elsewhere

Kohli pitted Dhawan against KL Rahul. They both played for their places.

India can't score freely against seamers. Missed out against spinners. Wait and watch jadeaja will go for plenty.

If one of these three guys had an additional skill (like bowling or wicket-keeping) then they would have been comfortable sharing the Top 3 Batting order. Rohit looks more assured about his spot and he is not under that pressure of fighting for his place.

Kl rahul is a very good wicket keeper miles better than pant it’s a shame he hasn’t been tried out yet

If one of Rahul/Dhawan had not played today, then scoreboard would have looked something like 190/1 in 30 overs instead of 148/3. Lack of middle-order (right since the world cup days) is actually pinching the management so they are trying to accommodate with openers!

Why is kohli trying to be big statesman by playing the big daddy role here letting his children go ahead of him where they shouldn’t be going like kl rahul going at 4. If it was Bangladesh you were playing against sure bloody this Australian side is on par with you if not better than you and they will most likely win today as well

Absolutely dreadful from the selfish 2. The sooner we ship off dhawan and get someone like gill or shaw the better, the kaptaan and koach managed to waste 2 years after CT 17, ganguly and whoever's the next selectors need to make sure they don't waste the next 3 years too.

That way I guess he will be under lot lesser pressure and can play freely at No.3 and even perhaps play pinch-hitting role if needed (say if he comes at 130/1 in 19 overs) and he is also capable of handling a collapse (say like if the team is 140/4 in 22 overs and he is still there). He can handle both these situations. Whats bothering him is matching the standards of Rohit & Dhawan and fighting for their spot...

He doesn't want KL Rahuls form to be impacted. So he did this which he shouldn't have done.

No wonder Cummins was sold for so much in IPL he ain’t no holder or Williams that India will torment

That’s what happens when you try to play big daddy too much play in your own position the one you’re the best at

Kohli out lol Good going by skip. This is what happens when you play out of your position. Wanted to continue accelerating.

This would make sense before wc, with iyer settling in this wasn't neccessary, this is just kohli once again pushing his bff at team's cost.

This series has no stake. So India must use this as an opportunity to identify the solid middle order. They have been searching since 2017. This is 2020 now.

Why is Manish pandey constantly being ignored.

Much better than rahul, he would have improved the run rate

Lol so is jadeja gonna block out 150kph starc thunderbolt I think India will be all out under 230
