What's new

Australia [284 & 487/7d] beat England [374 & 146] by 251 runs in the 1st Ashes Test, lead series 1-0

Forget about batting Paine seems like a poor captain . They should just give to Smith or at least someone else who can be a permanent member of this 11.

YJB has clearly bought into his own hype and seems to think he’s undroppable from the test team. He’s been poor for about a year now.

For the next test assuming Jimmy is out....

Burns
Roy
Roooot
Denly (one more chance)
Buttler
Stokes
Foakes
Woakes
Broad
Archer
Leach

Eng heavily fav here, what poor captaincy, should have bowled short to broad alot earliar.

Cant see aus scoring more than 260 here.

Double failure for Warner. Yet another awful umpiring decision, overturned on review.

Bye bye Punchy!

Get Smudger out while the ball is hard and England have won this.

Another hundred from Smithy can stop England from winning or else this gonna be England 1-0.

Smith looking solid again here , If Aussies can set Poms around 250 , they will have a chance

Good partnership here, need to break it quickly or could be a matchwinner.

Now , Aussies have to really grind here , they need to bat really well to give there bowlers some chance.

As I said,it would take a 100 from Smithy to stop England from winning.

Lets say aus make 250 in 2nd innings, chasing 160 will be doddle for eng.

220+ gets interesting but i cant see aus scoring 300 here.

Aus needs to be patient, the longer eng bowl the more they miss anderson.

Dont throw your wicket away.

aus suddenly look in the winning position, think they will definitely get a lead above 150.

what a batsman steve smith is. incredible

Run rate of 4 an over. England just in danger of losing their discipline a bit. Need to buckle down and keep this pair quieter.

Aussies would like to add 200 more to the lead while Poms would like to restrict Aus under 180 lead.

eng bowlers looked tired and missing anderson, they still on top.

Aus try to bat as long as possible tomorrow and take it 5th day, who knows what will happen.

Australia can win this if they set a target of 220 or more. Anything below that and England should win.

Smith is the only real hope for Aussies. If he gets out quickly, game over for Aussies probably.

what can smith do on it own, the wicket is slowing, realistically he can add another 50, the rest are sitting.

Aus would have really been in it should they have got broad early by peppering him with short bowls, everyone knows you get broad out that way, gave an additional 50 runs there.

England are slightly ahead here. But they are a bowler down and outstanding one he is. Smith and Head need to survive the first hour. Don’t see Paine and co doing much.

Australia setting a score of 180 would be a very close game.

Australia are leading by 34 runs currently. If Smith can hit a century here, Aussies should have 200+ lead.

Smith took Australia from 122/8 to 284/10 in first innings. Smith can win it for Australia provided others support him a bit.

Smith needs to bat for 2 more sessions.

Any target over 150 would be tough for England IMO.

England missed a big chance. They had the opportunity to score 500 here.

Moeen, Bairstow, and Butler were big flops.

Aus bat for 2 sessions and it's game on.
Who can hang in there with smith.
Humongous first hour, u will see root start to physically **** it, when lead crosses hundred and aus are only 4 down and Smith still there.
Huge first hour

England must play 4 proper bowlers . Stokes & Ali can only be your 5th & 6th bowling option .

34/3 effectively . 150 more & England are done & dusted . Weather forecast ?

England will feel that their batting is superior and should be able to take on 200 type target.

Rain expected very late in the day but looks overcast

i think Lyon will bowl much better in 2nd innings . 180+ will be very dicey .

Reports say that James Anderson is still suffering with tightness to his right calf. He will not take the field in Australia's second innings. If required, he will bat in England's second innings.

England are a better team in England. But they are missing Anderson here.Australia are more like Smith or burst.

Over the long series, England are still favourites IMO.

Justin Langer has had a lot of faith in Travis Head. He is slowly starting to repay that faith. He has gotten better in tests the longer he has played.

Another test match 50 for Steve Smith. The longer he bats the chances of Australia winning increase.

Moen Ali is so ovverated. Don't care if he gets t wickets now and then.

Leech would at least be able to keep things tight.

Broad bowling well. Could get a wicket at any time.

Ali all over the shop. Get him off.

79 lead, starting to get a bit worried here.

Australia got really lucky with Anderson’s injury. It would be a farce if they win from here.

A 5-man England attack would be close to wrapping it up by now, and they certainly wouldn’t have allowed Australia to go from 122/8 to 284.

You always have an excuse when India and England lose.

If you want to put it like that, I’m sure you agree that the result of the 2005 Ashes was also a farce.

Actually I agree here with Mamoon. Australia are heavily reliant on Smith away from home. Smith is carrying one of the weakest Aussie side I have ever seen.

England with Anderson is obviously a better side and they are missing Jimmy here. Its like India without Bumrah. If Jimmy is back,I would have England as favourites. Remember in this test, Australia were batting first after winning toss.

England have got a bit unlucky with Anderson’s fitness, but Broad and Woakes are good enough bowlers to knock over this Aussie lineup.

If Australia win this, I will view it as England throwing away a great opportunity to win the opening match.

The pitch doesnt look that daunting at the moment.

not easy but a proper wicketkeeper would have taken that stumping, YJB needs to be dropped.

Australia have a decent record at Lord's I think. Winning here would give them a massive boost.

Wade trying to aggressive. Good to see.

He has been in good form in domestic cricket. He deserves his chance.

Lyon will not be easy to handle on this pitch. He also will not give free balls away like Moen Ali.
