What's new

Australia [328 & 173/0] beat England [302 & 195] by 10 wickets in the first Ashes Test, lead 1-0

England now genuinely on top in this match for the first time.

Very generous applause for Broad after the over when he took Starcs wicket. Wouldent get that in certain countries.

Have Australia won the moral Ashes by not doctoring wickets?

If Smith keeps this up for a few more years, he'll be in GOAT territory.

Sachin fans on suicide watch :sachin

I hate to say that because he's so damn ugly to watch, but on sheer number of runs and match winning innings he's on another level to Sachin.

Broad has been terrific in this inning. Easily England's best modern era bowler.

Cummins playing beautifully. Haven't seen much of him before. Has a decent technique.

Australians would generally rate Broad higher.
He's always been second fiddle, the leader of their attack has always been Anderson. Just because he's performed well against your lot doesn't mean he's the better of the two.

Aussies with their most creative chant in Ashes history. "Broad is a w****r!' (repeated continuously).

Convict how is your new ground in Perth? Do you like it?

I don't think he's better than Anderson tbh.

I think he is at par for me. He can lead an attack and single handedly take on the opposition batting lineup and doesn't rely on other bowlers of his team. He has got the better of high quality players like Clarke and AB when they were at peak.

His performance against Aus and SA, two top teams has also been very good unlike for Anderson.

Convict did you catch that Warne dig of Bucanan earlier? It wasn't a joke either, he seemed serious.

"Bowl three maidens in a row and you have 85% chance of getting a wicket"

"Looking at stats over the years, which is all Buchanan supposedly did, about time he came up with a good one"

“I didn’t learn much off John Buchanan at all. One thing he did say, and I must have been listening for once...”

Its never hosted a match yet but it looks great.

So much better than Subi and the WACA

Warne has hated Buchanan for years.

Yeah but to make such blatant digs on TV. Very low class if you ask me, even a couple of the other commentators were chuckling..

Have you ever hear Warne talk? 95% of what comes out of his mouth is either bringing up old grudges or promoting himself or his mates.

Smith's BEST EVER inning..

You never know a loss in first test here could well shifted the momentum of the series.

Smith will finish as the number 1 century maker for Australia.

Sucks to admit as a big Ponting fan, but it's gonna happen =\

Wow. We're watching the GOAT test batsman.
Numbers wise probably, but he'll be surpassed. Too ugly batting wise to be considered the GOAT for long.

Across formats, Sachin is still number 1 by a fair way.

Cirumstances wise definitely, but the English bowling has been pretty innocuous. Most of the Australian dismissals were really soft too.

Considering he plays 100 tests in next 10 years, I see him achieving the 50 test centuries landmark. And more importantly, quite a few centuries when the chips were down.

He has a game for all conditions though I have seen him struggling few times in swing conditions against out swingers. Against swing Kane is a better batsman and the best in current era imo. Last one was Dravid.

Not sure how long he will keep scoring with that footwork/ technique, he's play is definitely not good on eyes.

Of course that's a possibility, but I've been saying he'd get figured out for years...now he's scored 21 centuries and is only 20 away from Pointing at the age of 28 :))

He's going to take all the records, including Sachin's. Best to accept it as a inevitability, if he had flaws they would have been worked out by now.

I just cant recall any Smith inning better than this home or away. He has many series defining performances but he is not a fluke ATG inning type of player. This is better than his match winning performances in Pune( many missed chances) or Lords( flat pitch and Rogers had 170 odd too) and probably anyone else.

Circumstances wise, this is simply a brilliant performance.

We live a world where Steve Smith could be the Test batting GOAT :)))

It wasn't long ago he was being compared to Chris Martin by Saqs

Look at this run rate shaz619

This is cowardly batting, these two teams need to adopt the modern approach of teams like England and Australia if they want to be successful :mv:

England have actually put in a great effort here and are probably in a much better position on Day 3 at the Gabba than anyone (including me) expected. But equally there is no doubt who the world’s best batsman is after this innings. Smith has been invincible.

That's not true. Kane doesn't score as much as Smith in the same conditions.

Best played of swing bowling of this generation is probably Rahane.

You say it like it was debatable? :))

Only one person has gotten close to him in the last 2 years and it was only during a 2-3 month period he was matching him (Kohli).

I have hardly seen Kane struggling against swing. He has played Anderson and Steyn (2 of the best swing bowlers of current era) quite well in swing conditions when I saw plus has a v.good technique for swing bowling.

Yeah Rahane is quite good too.

Not sure about struggling, but he has been dismissed several times by nicking off against the new ball. I rate Rahane, Kohli, Warner (scored a brilliant 100 against us on a green top) and Smith higher tbh.

You just cannot get him out, you have to wait for a mistake.

Must be so annoying to bowl to.

Need to start considering what will be a testing 4th innings target for Australia. I think 220 or above could be tough to chase.

First need to work out a plan for Smith before doing anything.

You're not winning the Ashes if you can't figure that out.

Australia have been Warner, Smith + one or two stars of the summer (Khawaja) for a while now.

Those two always seem to score runs and win them matches. Expecting runs from Warner next innings.

A chase of 180-200 will lead to a fantastic day 5 on this pitch.

England need a real quick bowler and it isn’t Ball. Plunkett should have been on the plane.

Captain Irresistible Force picks up the final wicket, whilst Captain Immovable Object remains unbeaten at the other end.

Australia now on top.

England need to shed either 1 or no wickets tonight. If they go into stumps 3-4 down then they could end up losing the match heavily.

However if they see off the new ball and settle in, then they could get back in a good position tomorrow morning.

England need to realise that this pitch requires you to bat time and not worry about the runs, they will come as long as you can stay out there. Stoneman, Malan, Warner, Marsh all gave their wickets away because they thought they were set so they could try and up the scoring rate. Look at how Smith played, he decided to grind it out and wait for the bowlers to bowl bad balls.

Getting concerned about Cook, he seems to have lost “it”.
