What's new

Australia [328 & 173/0] beat England [302 & 195] by 10 wickets in the first Ashes Test, lead 1-0

New ball on this pitch is a beast as we have seen from both sides, just need to try and survive it as best you can.

Not sure about struggling, but he has been dismissed several times by nicking off against the new ball. I rate Rahane, Kohli, Warner (scored a brilliant 100 against us on a green top) and Smith higher tbh.
Warner? That must be some fluke one like how Sehwag had against you guys.He was all at sea against Indian bowlers in the recent ODI series whenever there was swing.Even Kohli isnt that good.He batted well against Lankans but I would reserve my judgement till the England tour next year.

Of course that's a possibility, but I've been saying he'd get figured out for years...now he's scored 21 centuries and is only 20 away from Pointing at the age of 28 :))

He's going to take all the records, including Sachin's. Best to accept it as a inevitability, if he had flaws they would have been worked out by now.
He totally deserves to take away all of Sachin's records on tests. However, he relies more on hand-eye coordination rather than technique and unfortunately such players dont last much as their reflexes slow down once they are in the wrong side of 30's.

Getting concerned about Cook, he seems to have lost “it”.

I think his eyes have gone. He might still get a ton in the series somewhere but he has become unreliable like Gooch did in his last year.

The way Smith weathered the storm was legendary. They completely blocked his scoring zones, yet he still scored a century. GOAT in the making.

My boy Josh teaching Starc how it's done.

LMAO Tonga nearly won it in the last 5 mins. Extremely tense last minute.

England survive 20-18.
Don't have time to check in, nor do I want to. Got no time for a poor imitation of rugby.

Will tune in for the Wales v. AB game tomorrow morning, that's real footy.

You say that, but I've never quite seen the passion Tongan fans had for their team did tonight in any sport in NZ before.

They broke the Mt Smart Stadium attendance record tonight.

And they have celebrated these wins like Indian fans :))

They're minnows and are finally achieving something in a sport, expect a crowd considering the large Tongan population in NZ.

That was an epic session, can’t remember the last time I watched something and felt so on the edge of my seat!

What the hell is wrong with Smith.
He gives me hope of being an international cricketer.
Surely this is one of the great hundreds

Can take some kids with otherworldly hand eye coordination and teach then "the smith technique"?

Prepare a sporting wicket that enables a good contest between bat and ball, you actually get a decent game of Test cricket - who knew ?!

To be fair, its the flaws of the two teams that makes it a balanced and fascinating contest as well as the unusual slowness of the Gabba pitch that hasn't made strokeplay easy.

Smith has produced one of his finest Test knocks to give his side a lead but England have fought hard and have a big opportunity here. Root needs to stabilise the innings now. Wonder what would be a defendable total ?

Khawaja wicket would be more prized than Smith a certain poster said on here . :)))

Khawaja is a great flat tracker. But seems his spin weakness is even worse than I thought to be embarrassed like that at the Gabba by a mediocre finger spinner.

It wasn't you I was talking about.

But yes he is very poor versus spin. I don't know how much longer Australia will stick with him as he won't get any better versus spin.

Moeen ali is still considered mediocre even after so many match winning spells

The Aussies aren’t always the greatest team in the 4th innings. It has historically been one of their few weaker areas for some reason. England need to put a minimum 230 lead on the board to be firmly in the game in my view - yes they could defend 150 or so but that would be extremely difficult.

Australia are ahead by a nose. I think England will struggle to struggle the initiative back after Smith's epic. Nonetheless, a ton by Root and contributions by the surprisingly impressive Stoneman, Bairstow, Malan and Moeen can set the cat among the Australian pigeons again.

Stokes would probably have won this game for England.

This has been a pretty disappointing pitch to be honest, although still miles better than the dross they served up for the New Zealand test a couple of years ago. It's England's to lose from here.

Moeen out bowled handsomely by Lyon.

Aussie's working their way on top.

England to post 265 lead & get chased down on day 5!

I think it would have to be a bit more.

If this was the metric, I'd be comfortable as England. As bad as 7/2 effectively is, I would expect more than 223 on a wicket that's still playing fine. The play in the final session with the new ball and scoreboard pressure isn't at all representative of how the game should be expected to go, and once the ball is a few overs older and if the batsman can get set, they can get runs.

England need their World #1 tail to stand up and be counted this time. If it's effectively more than 170 when the sixth wicket falls, I expect them to push the total into dangerous territory.

Match is very well poised,

Root needs to get a 75 with fifties from Stoneman and Bairstow; target of > 225 will be tricky if Smith falls cheaply. If ENG fold for 150 odd tomorrow then AUS will chase 120 in 25 overs with Warner blazing to a quick fire half century!

Nathan Lyon will clean up England lineup with less than 200 to chase

Man, if this test was this close without Stokes then imagine if he was here, England would have had this in the bag

Gut instinct says that England will get a lead of 160-170 and Aus will win by 7 wickets. Hopefully England get a lead of 270 and a great test.

England need 200 plus to have a chance of winning this game. I think anything less and Australia will win.

I dunno. The wicket might go completely flat and AUS could walk it to 250-2.

England need a minimum lead of 200 and even then, it may not be enough but gives them a chance

Advantage Australia... just. Gripping test match cricket.

what do you reckon guys, Eng 3rd inning total.

If they can somehow get a lead of 275 then it would be interesting thats only if Anderson is fit...

Good start for England so far, meanwhile Ponting is steaming mad in the commentary box with the Australian tactics.

Is it just me or was that catching / fielding / diving effort thing from Uzzy in the gully just then a bit pants?

Probably pants, he's never been a good fielder. Not sure how they have him in gully.

This is a great pitch, you cant bat to aggressively but you need to show intent, you can't bowl to many loose balls and you have to hit the right areas.

Graeme Swann is such an irritating commentator.

Please can we have the sky commentators back!

The Australian quicks have been sub-par this morning, but I honestly cannot lay much blame at the doors of Stoneman and Malan for their dismissals to the spinner. Lyon has been breathtakingly good.

Graeme Swann talking absolute rubbish on commentary about how a batsman should approach the second innings, as a lower order slogger who had only way of playing he clearly has no idea what he is on about.

Precisely, and he is talking nonsense about their interviews too.

Root on 48* and playing fluently, but he needs some support down there, can’t build a defendable total on his tod.

2nd best batsmen in the world fails to convert 80% of the time :)))

:root

Root does not have the 50/100 conversion rate to get right to the top of the tree alongside Smith, Williamson & Kohli. Captain needs to dominate & lead & set matches up, not chip in a handy 50.
