What's new

Australia [351 & 227] defeat South Africa [162 & 298] by 118 runs in first Test

With a bit of good Test selection, India would've whitewashed SA. Must be kicking themselves. However with no new star players in the fold for SA, only a matter of time before an Asian team wins the Test series in SA. If Misbah, Younis and Ajmal were still playing for Pakistan, even Pakistan would be in a chance to beat SA this December. SA are declining fast.

Was looking forward to see battle between Lyon and :ab ... dissapointed the way things turned out

It was AB s call though and there was not a run in it particularly against Warner

caught behind... check
lbw...check...
run out...check
bowled....check...

What is the next mode of dismissal going to be? :kp

Can you call that a choke?

He is pathetic under pressure, how on earth does a big player run himself out first ball like this

What pressure? The target was beyond anyone's reach. Pressure was in first inning. It was a brain-fade and that is something very common to him.

He needs an instructor to play along with him and keep making him aware of game.Has zero game awareness.

Toss is crucial here...the one which win the toss and bat ..that team wins...india won last test as they win the toss and bat first

Pretty dismal match.

What a series was that when India toured SA?

Australia can't even put a competitive performance for fan's entertainment.

I tend not to trust players who make a name for themselves at our domestic circuit. With all respect intended for TdB who has done well domestically.

But a lot of our mainstay players are plugged from the under 19's into SAA tours and straight into Test cricket after a few first class matches (not more than 8).
AB, Amla, Smith, QdK, Kallis, Steyn, Rabada, Ngidi, Makram, Morkel, Ntini etc.
Philander is the exception. He is the only player from the domestic circuit to be class enough for Tests. The likes of Faf (players who made a name at Franchise level) are inconsistent.

But TdB has a chance to prove me wrong.

11 tests against top 5 nations by SA in last 2 years and only 2 centuries. Both by Dean Elgar.

Good fight by Makram, but it will be at least three years before we can see any resemblance of consistency (Amla, AB, Kallis). That's how long it takes for our bats to find their feet.

ABD is still class. A single run-out doesn't make any difference. He made bulk of the runs in the first innings.

Terrible from South Africa. But I wouldn't put it past them to comeback strongly. They have always been a test side that shows a lot of heart.

Today's Match shows why Ab will be a great but not the greatest.Lacks game awareness.I have seen him getting run out in crucial matches since ages....
Vs Nz 2011 wc quarter final,Vs India 2015 Wc and 2017 Champions trophy,Now here....South Africa will always remain a team of bottlers.Such talents but...
Similarly De kock exceptional player but the way he was throwing his wicket away againist India,You cannot call that bad form.
This is why I love the Australian cricket.Exceptional mental toughness. How they even got inside Kohli's head during hard fought test series and mocked his injury. You could see Kohli losing it.

I'm sorry but Amla is a shell of his former self.

He's going the Michael Clarke route in the last few tests of his career

Pleasure watching Makram play. Hope he gets a ton. Will do him a world of good. He would have benefited playing alongside Kallis.

117/4 South Africa is creeping closer.

But it's gloomy out there, the player shouldn't be playing in these dangerous conditions. Yes South Africa are in a winning position. But I'd take the lights. Feel sorry for the international fans who were looking forward to this evenly matched contest. Appalling by the ICC.

Starc is Wahab in Tests, other than that 1 SL tour, I'd be inclined to actually go with Wahab. :19:

QdK is at that stage of his career where every quality batsman has been. Technique getting tested to the max.

If he doesn't overcome this around the wicket stuff then he'll get dropped sooner rather than later. He might never be the same again. If he comes through it then he'll be a quality international bat at least. Must find a way to combat the loophole the English found in his technique.

Garbage batting with no fight from some players.

Quota selection.

SA should aim to score 300 in their 2nd innings. That way they can dent the confidence of Aussies and also can reduce the margin of defeat.

Green tracks for the coming Tests is a must now for SA. Aus are not used to playing on green tracks and their batting will fold easily. This is SA’s only hope of winning the series.

Flat tracks and slow tracks are bread and butter for Aussies. Their bowlers know how to bowl on those kinds of tracks.

I think if ABDV had not been run out match would have been very interesting. They are known for their 4th innings fight backs.

Loving Markram's resilience, quite gritty.De kock too is playing with confidence but the problem is both being busy player sooner or latter they will find a way to get out

Still not seeing any demos on the pitch apart from some sharp turn.Had AB stayed their this would have been close

QdK hasn't played any aggressive shot yet his strike rate is 71, 38 of 52.

He's a joy to watch when in good nick. Hence I wanted an innings shootout for this series. Alongside AB they could take the match away in a session.

Wow am loving it

Those young lads playing some beautiful cricket shots all around

There's too much time left to play for a draw. Might as well enjoy their cricket. Any ball could have your number on this surface

With a day left hey are not versatile enough to go for a blockathon

They are natural stroke players, especially de kock.So everything we can do is just sit and enjoy watching those beautiful stroke plays

This is far more abrasive surface compared to what they offered for India. Abrasive surface helps reverse swing better. They played right into the hands of Australia with this pitch. Helped Lyon, Starc, their batsmen. Effectively dented their own bowling. All for what? Because they were afraid of collapse against their seamers? As it is they collapsed
