What's new

Australia [351 & 227] defeat South Africa [162 & 298] by 118 runs in first Test

Well played young man for wonderful century :salute

No wonder why King Kohli :kohli2 had so much praise for Markram in last series off the field :ashwin

Its raining boundaries and smith still with attacking field set

Quite a good contest to watch

Sensational piece of umpiring there from Dharma. Kudos to the Lankan.

Also, how rank ordinary does Starc look for long stretches of the game? Surprising for a bowler rated so high.

Lyon against lefties can cause harm

Hope de kock didn't throw it away like in first innings

Starc is the Aussie Wahab in tests, a lot of his wickets are tailenders with a reversing ball.

Rooting for a narrow Australian win this series. Can't have the dial-a-pitch Saffers creep close to India in the rankings.

What a shot Makram, 100 partnership. These ain't hanging around, rightly so. No point hanging around.

Smith must be having flashbacks to the Gabba Test. What a quality knock this has been by Markram.

If these two bring the target down to 100 then Aussies would get righteously ugly in the field

Temperamentally great innings Conditions are not that tough. This pitch is slow.

Right now it's easy for these two batsmen because they are still miles away from the target and are playing carefree cricket with nothing to lose. As soon as the required target comes down to 120 and less than 100, we will see panic in the SA batsmen.

It’s a flat pitch man. Nothing for the pacers.

Aus bowlers are extracting something out of the pitch by banging the ball into the pitch.

True that. I cannot understand how the heck they folded for 162 runs and later Australia folded.

Yeah, right. Ball reversing around the 25th over mark in the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th innings. Flat docile pitch indeed.

You will see more oomph from Australian bowling around that time. They will bend their back , expect sledging, barrage of bouncers, slowing things down. Very hard to tought it out when you know after you there is no one stop a collapse

They lost 3 top order wickets to Lyon. Reverse hurt only the late order batsmen. Morkels wickets were only the angled deliveries.

Yeah, it's not like the new ball will have a say. And the pitch will stay the same.

You don't want to raise the profile of every innings by appending "tough pitch" to the statement. Temperamentally a great knock.

Lol for Indians South African pitches have suddenly become easy peasy flat tracks

Some droll posts by a few bitter Indian posters here. It's clear as day that the bounce is unpredictable and batting is not easy - it never is on dry fourth day tracks. Markram and de Kock have batted exceptionally here. Australia will still win this mind.

Faf and TdB are late order batsmen?
Didn't Lyon get Elgar, Amla and QdK?
Who's the 3rd top order bat?

It didn't become. It is.Commies themselves say it is a slow track. Ball was turning square for Maharaja. Brownish track. Only option is to take the pitch out of the equation and keep bowling full using reverse swing. Only help you get from this pitch is ball gets scuffed up pretty quickly and you can reverse.

Yes. Temperamentally amazing given that they are one wicket away from a collapse. Especially De Kock given his horror run against India has done amazingly well.

So what makes this pitch not flat? The copious seam movement which is not there? Or the ball hooping through in air which is also not there?

Absolutely bloody-minded partnership. Too early to call. Eerily somewhat similar to Dravid/Laxman partnership on day 4 against Aussies with India was one wicket away from a collapse.

Imagine if the dial-a-pitch Saffers were playing on this pitch against India. They'd have cried to high heavens about this being a subcontinental pitch. LOL

Would be hysterical if they lose this test - 2 matches in a row where their designer pitches would backfire spectacularly.

In all seriousness, a career defining innings from Markram and a good turn around from the last month or so. With ABD, Amla and Faf in the final stages of their careers a lot depends on him and QdK going forward.
Helps him in the long run as a contender for the leadership position as well.

147 kph by Cummins !! They are giving everything This is one of the best knocks by a saffer regardless of the result.

Hope these guys don't get run out at this point.

Hope they do. It'd make me laugh at these mental midgets designing pitches and failing. Plus they won't come within sniffing distance of India in all important test rankings.

True that. I cannot understand how the heck they folded for 162 runs and later Australia folded.

No demon's on the pitch but not an easy conditions to bat, have to say that's mainly because of australian bowlers quality.Their pacers started reversing the ball on 25th odd overs in the first inngs.Even ABD looks troubled against the late movement

Then some sharp turn is also their,Someone in the likes of smith looks clueless against maharaj yesterday. How often can you see that?

Looking alone the scoreboard or highlights won't say the whole story.Their is a reason why SA and Aus fold on 168 and 227 successively

These two need to cash in before the new ball becomes due, as Australia seems to be going through the motions somewhat. It will be really treacherous trying to get through to the close 5 down.

Saw part of the match. I still don't think it is a 162 all out pitch. At worst 250 pitch. IT looks worse after watching Mitch Marsh, Starc adding lot of runs in the back end. Australia batting was horrendous in the 2nd innigs. They were fishing for no reason. Still you can take wickets. But unlike AUstralia which made them work really hard, SA did not make them work hard.

They are still playing their shots regardless of the pressure

courageous and gutsy yet awe inspiring stroke play from both ends, loving it

You gotta hand it to Saffers to produce 4th innings like this time after time. No shame in losing from here. THis is bloody brilliant to watch.

Will be interesting to see the field set of Smith going forward. Now i see two short mid wicket positions standing close to each other.

What a performance.. Legendary really. Is Markaram the guy SA needs in next 10 years to turn things back like Smith did?

Border while commentating " This pitch has been very good for batting " . Is he Indian or just sour grapes from him?

Pitching short is waste of energy here. They try to pitch full which easily goes for runs. Catch 22 situation for Aussies.

I gave up on the match after Faf got out but this is something extraordinary.

Go Markaram Go!

Well any true cricket fan could tell that. But if you carry some kind of bitterness you will miss some of the most obvious things.

Australia have scored 567/20 on this pitch. That's 28 runs per wicket. Isn't that the going rate in SA since readmission?
Or are tough pitches in South Africa the ones where everyone gets bundled under 100?

Both teams are used to similar surface. Both play kookaburra back home. Both are weak against spin. Markram gone to a dibbly dobbly bowler like Marsh lol Keeper standing up

Try going through scorecard of Joburg test v India 2013. Atleast that test started on a spicy pitch but ended docile.

Why some neutral supporters are feeling happy if SA plays well... Oh feeling happy by seeing other nation do well in test than own team :ashwin

Gone Markram.
