Australia [497/8d & 186/6d] beat England [301 & 197] by 185 runs in the fourth Ashes Test

Steve Smith has demoralised English bowlers.They don't know how to get him out.He is scoring rate is very high as well which makes it worse.

I don't agree thats its been total dominance for Aus. It's been a competitive series and although you point out England squeezed home when Smith wasn't around this was because he couldn't handle the short stuff from Jofra.

Anyway test cricket can always shock. You never know England might show grit and save the game. If not then Australia deserve it.
 
Ball of the series for me - Cummins top of off stump, seaming away from Joe Root and dismisses him first ball. Surely unplayable.

Game, set, match & Ashes.
 
Got to hand it to those Aussies, they have an excellent set of quick bowlers. England have missed the cutting edge of Anderson and their batting has been very disappointing
 
Australia keep producing world class bowlers because their domestic system is very competitive.The pitches and physique
of the bowlers also helps.Australian well built.

Its really funny that you think getting stuck on the helmet means not being able to handle short stuff when the text book example is to avoid the bat at all cost, which Smith did on that ball

Well quite clearly he couldn't handle it on that occasion as it ended up knocking him down (which I don't find funny). Bar that Smith has owned Jofra.

Lol he's owned Jofra like a little child. One bouncer with him getting hit don't mean he can't handle short stuff. If hitting someone with a bouncer means a batsmen can't handle short stuff then I'm afraid you need to watch more and understand cricket.

Also he wasn't around as he was injured and the way you making it sound like England played better cricket and thats why he wasn't their. By hitting a batsmen don't mean a batsmen can't handle short stuff and someone played better. Any bowler can hit a batsmen once in a blue moon

Lol you are bitter. I'm not even English or Australian but just call it how I see. I've watched cricket for over 30years so think I do know the game. Smith obviously didn't handle the Jofra snorter in the game that he was felled but generally as I have pointed out earlier he's owned Jofra. A shame Root has overbowled him as his speed has dropped significantly.

really? Well the England & Wales cricket team is the nearest thing you will get to a full British team. We keep hearing that British Indians are more assimilated than their Pakistani counterparts yet I don't believe many support England preferring to support India even though many of them esp Gujaratis came via East Africa so you would imagine the Indian link to be not as strong.

A little harsh as they beat India 4-1 last year and SL 3-0 away.

But now Bayliss has won the WC I hope they will get someone in to manage who understands the long game.
 
The Australians are taking this ashes result too seriously. It came too soon for England after the WC hangover.
 
The miracle of Ben Stokes’s Headingley made us believe for a bit longer, but it looks like reality has bitten hard this week with a brilliant and ruthless performance by Australia, and the Ashes are now heading their way.

588 deliveries (98 overs) to survive tomorrow. A few of these might be lost due to slow over rates and bad light, but that’s it. No rain is forecast whatsoever.

With all 10 wickets left I would not particularly rate our chances of pulling that one off, but 8 remaining wickets, well, that makes it close to impossible.

It’s never over til it’s over - but it is, sadly, almost over.

I just hope that serious changes are made both before and after the Oval - the result there is likely to be another Australian win and so will be less important - I would be looking more for an actual team effort, with 100% commitment, and evidence of planning for the future.

First and foremost, Root must step down from the captaincy and bat at 4. Broad for caretaker captain.
 
Disappointing from England.

I expected them to win this Ashes comfortably. They struggled in every single Test.

Surprised by how well the Aussies have done in England, thought for sure England would win.

With how their pacers are bowling and the form Smith is in + Warner in Aus, we're going to be in for a thrashing when we tour.
 
what we learnt is that James pattinson is overrated as hell and siddle is average. cummins and hazelwood plus starc are and always will be their premier bowlers.
jhye richardson is the only good back up Aussies have but he is very Injury prone and built like a twig.

cummins will be figured out if he keeps bowling bouncers like a ******. He needs to diversify his skills. Great bowler regardless but his bouncers will be predictable for a better team.

I think NZ would do better than England.

I think NZ is currently 3rd best Test team (behind India and Australia).

N.z would lose to s.africa and England comfortably away from home and they would lose at home to this weakened s.africa as well.

Great odi team but probably 4th best test side. Still a good team though. Their away record isn't great vs big 3.
 
Steve Smith showed his phenomenal capabilities once again for Australia on day four at Old Trafford, keeping his side's batting lineup afloat after a barrage from the England quicks.

Having bowled out the hosts impressively earlier in the day, the Australian top order was blown away by Jofra Archer and Stuart Broad, but Smith exhibited some typically dynamic batsmanship to keep his side in the ascendancy, notching his fifth 50-plus score in as many innings. He was eventually out for 82, but his knock allowed Tim Paine to declare on 186/6.

Pat Cummins then produced a magnificent opening over, knocking over Rory Burns and Joe Root in consecutive deliveries to leave England in a perilous position. They finished the day on 18/2, needing 365 runs if they are to pull off another miraculous win. Australia need eight wickets on the final day to retain the Ashes.

Australia's quicks were rampant in the morning session, and were it not for a decent effort from England's number eight Jos Buttler, and an understated cameo once again from Jack Leach, then the home side would not have avoided the potential follow-on.

Mitchell Starc, who had yet to show his best since his return to the side, was in inspired form. He cleaned up Jonny Bairstow (17) early on before accounting for the key wicket of Ben Stokes (26), forcing the dangerous all-rounder to nick off into slips with some wicked pace bowling.

The ever-impressive Cummins then saw off Jofra Archer (1), before Starc grabbed his third scalp with the wicket of Broad. Buttler (41) and Leach (4*) batted smartly to get England past the follow-on threshold, and shortly after, the latter was bowled by Cummins, which meant Australia were put back into bat with a lead of 196.

What ensued before the tea interval was a magnificent barrage of fast bowling from Broad and Archer, and the tourists' second innings got off to a dreadful start, David Warner falling to Broad in the first over for a duck and his opening partner Marcus Harris (6) departing in a similar vein, trapped lbw by the England quick.

Archer, who then bowled the quickest spell of any bowler so far in this Test match, saw off Travis Head and Marnus Labuschagne, and it looked as if England might mount something of a comeback in the late afternoon.

Smith quelled any of these worries however, dominating the English attack and forming a solid partnership with Matthew Wade that the home side never really looked like penetrating. Smith and Wade eventually perished, but Paine declared to set a target of 383.

Cummins then took over – England must battle once again if they are to keep their Ashes hopes alive.

Well we have managed to last for the first half an hour without losing a wicket, which given that our two worst players (out of a bad bunch) are stood at the crease is pretty stunning.

Roy did his best tbh. Used up 67 balls and played some nice shots. Not sure he has the capability as a Test player to have done any more than that.

More batsmen should be doing it, looking at the reactions aussies were always going to review that, you are out either way, this earns you a bit of respect.

Cummins is bossing this innings, all 4 wickets to fall are his. The best bowler on either side and well worth his number one ranking.
 
Nathan Lyon has been poor all series. Australia had to take another back up spinner.
Game going this far because of Nathan Lyon he just can't seem to get wickets.
Last test and this test with so much spin he has been very poor. Australias bowling weak link has been him.
 
England should look to block, block and block everything.

A 200 ball-30 odd inning is the exact requirement of the day. It's not done yet.

Aussies dont have many spinners in their FC. Lyon at the least provides that control and allows the pacers some rest.

Historically legspinners have been more effective in test cricket. Guys like Murali, Bhajji, saqi are exceptions. Till Aus doesn't find a good leggie Lyon will remain their nr 1 option.
 
Well played Denly, a good knock in these conditions and couldn’t do much about the dismissal.

Buttler joins Bairstow now lol. This won’t last long. Match could be over by Tea.

Go to say Cummins is just awesome. Having the world's best bowler and batsman has really helped Australia they have both performed.

Australia are a better test side. Even without Smith last test they should won it if it wasn't for a freak Stoke innings and a umpire mistake.

I don't disagree Aus are a better side. England have work to do with their top order but i think they will address it in time.
 
Bairstow out, marginal decision given the height but a good one from the umpire.
 
That LBW decision just didn’t look out at first sight.

Only an extremely poor umpire would give that out, especially to a left armer bowling around the wicket.

With tailenders we never know what will happen these days. But that is exactly why Starc is there for. Don't expect Australia to struggle twice in a row.
