Australia defeat India by 5 wickets in 1st ODI (Perth)

You cannot win a batting shoot-out against Australia in Australia. Neither Warner, nor Finch scored today but they still managed to win.

India gave a good fight though, I expect them to win a couple of games in this series.

Fixed. India once famously chased down 362 in an ODI with 9 wickets in hand and 39 balls to spare.

Thanks. That is what I meant. Their batting is invincible on the flat Aussie tracks and any bowler who manages to take five of them out for not many deserves a lot of credit.

How was the pitch today? I thought we would be getting a more even contest after the second practice game.

Lifeless.

Flat as pancake. All the talk about a more sporting wicket was hogwash. Brisbane will definitely be better, with maybe a little seam movement and more bounce for fast bowlers.

It's actually more positive for Pakistan.

The bang-it-in hit-the-deck tracks are Brisbane and Perth - but South Africa play there, not Pakistan.

Pakistan will get better surfaces. Adelaide will be a Pink Ball greentop. Melbourne and Sydney are fairly likely to be low-bouncing and rain-affected.

No offence Junaids but not long ago you were telling us how NZ were going to destroy Australia but that backfired and covered you in egg, now its going to be Pakistan. Sorry mate but you keep telling us how Australia is going to get beat and yes you will get it right one day just like a broken clock is right twice a day.

I knew this over hyped team would lose, india cricket team is the biggest dhoka in international cricket...feel bad for all their fans, beicharay hamesha sochtay ab india Australia ko maaaray gabut in the end .....oh bhaii start watching something else and stop hyping this crap team .

How can they win?

Their batting strategy is this only. How much better can they execute it?

If they bat first they cannot score more than 320. It's literally impossible with this approach.

If they chase, they will play a little more aggressively and the moment Rahane walks to the crease all hope will vanish.

Meanwhile Australia can hardly score less than 300 batting first on their beloved roads with 8 quality hitters, and if they are chasing we have already seen what they can do even with a bad start.

I'm sure Mustafizur Rahman would've got Bailey and Smith out easily. India can only dream of such bowlers. A shame Australia hardly plays Bangladesh for some strange reason. Mustafizur Rahman has gotten out Rohit (3x), De Kock (3x), Raina (2x), Amla, Duminy, Afridi, Rahane, Ashwin etc. Sorry.

Anyway, India with all these wickets in hand shouldn't have lost. It is merely a strategical error and nothing more. Interesting to see how Australia does away from home. I remember they lost 2 ODIs to England.

Indians paid the price for slow bating when they could have gone after the Australians. With 9 wickets in hand at the 35th over, they should have thrown it in the overdrive and score some 350 runs. May be next time.

Oz tough to beat on these slabs. Bat deep and usually have a decent attack to keep teams down to manageable totals. Wasn't much of an attack today tho India should have taken full advantage of it. Had they gone a bit harder after the 40 over mark should have been able to post around 340. That would have been a tough chase.

To win, they have to play six proper batsmen and go in with four bowlers. Bowlers are just accessories on these roads and it doesn't matter if you're bowling Yadav or Raina, they'll go for the same amount of runs.

Other than that, they just need to play more aggressively in the middle overs.

Medium-paced, seam bowlers would have been carted on this pitch. Bowlers like Mustafizur and Asif will not find much success in Australia, these days.

A very good medium-pacer can minimize the damage.

Otherwise these pitches are roads and no one is meant to survive on this kind of wicket.

I think, Rohit played brilliantly, so did Virat & in their short stay both MS & RJ batted well - the issue is not their batting. Any given day, on a WACA wicket, 309 (regardless of 3 or 9 down) is a good total.

But here, IND was playing Australia - no one can predict, what this Aussie lineup is capable of chasing. They have Faulkner at 7 with 43/113 stats & Wade might bat at 3 for Pakistan, who comes at 8. In AUS, the closest team to them is SAF, who were crashed 4-1 just about a year back. Only way to beat these Aussies in AUS is to put them in, keep things tight & the Aussies 'll go for self destruction in some days, because they play only in top gear. In recent times (last 20 months) AUS had lost 3 ODI at home & NZ, if I can recall correctly - all 3 batting 1st & in all 3, they were all out well before 50 overs. In UK, they lost both the games batting 1st (1, I can recall), in UAE, "almost" lost an ODI, again batting 1st. Apart from IND in IND, I don't think any team can bat them out of the match, by posting a target - even then, Faulkner almost chased 383.

This is what I think went wrong for India & the blame goes to MS, Virat & Shastri. Being put in, AUS, might have ended 383/8 - that was end of it; but there was a sniff of chance that against 2 balls, IND might find them 90/4 after 15 & then Ash & Jaddu strangles the late middle order to submission; may be for ~300 sort of total, which could had been chased, particularly against this inexperienced Aussie attack. Batting 1st, in a day match in WACA, IND can put 375 - still I'll put my money on Aussies to chase that. They are head & shoulder above chaser, because of having the fire power to blast, the fitness & stamina to chase extra runs, couple of "the master batsman" to play 150 sort of innings, which is essential to chase anything over 330 & most importantly - unlike SAF or Pakistan, they don't choke, once they have the game between jaws, it's the end of it.

India has wasted 1 toss, now I think, it's going to be 5-0, unless, Aussies rest half the squad & MSD wins toss at SCG day-nighter; though Warner's loss is worth just a little pause ......
