What's new

Australia v Pakistan | 1st Test | Brisbane | Dec 15-19, 2016 | Day 3

Any one is welcome to fade away after around 75 International hundreds - most of those in winning effort.

That depends on the bowling effort.

Virat matched Smith blow for blow and hit 4 tons in Australia, yet none of them came in a winning cause. I don't expect many of Smith or Root's hundreds to come at a winning cause in Asia just like Virat outside asia mainly due to the caliber of their respective bowling attacks in respective conditions.

Josh is like Ash - on favorable condition, he'll ask question with every ball

Here, everyone moves to Toronto, though it's -18C right now :(

Anyway boss, how long this pair need to bat to make sure that Sulman doesn't need to fix the opening pair?

I don't want Butt to replace Azhar or Aslam.

I want Aslam to open with Butt, with Azhar at 3 and Babar at 4.

It's getting windy and dark clouds have arrived. There is a thunderstorm west of the city.

The hard batting stage starts now, but Hazlewood and Starc are tired.

Smith should have declared 30 minutes before Dinner so that Starc and Hazlewood would be fresh now that the sun is setting.

Why does Azhar look so uncomfortable? Bat with confidence or you will get out.

azhar playing at 2 positions , he must be special. :D

Till his 50 against Kiwis, Mac probably had more Test wickets than run.
Junaids - who is the cricketer with 200+ wickets but almost half Test runs in career?

Chris Martin?

I know it's Chris Martin! Who doesn't know that!

Both openers have been driving balls which are short enough to leave.

Tough for Babar to arrive in rapidly changing light conditions.

Why should Babar & Azhar move down to accommodate Butts? Besides, why should PAK break a left-right pair to make it left-left? Besides, it's not that Butta is 22 - that he makes a pair with Sami for a decade.

Sami gone.

We should get as much practice we can for next game. Sami played a poor shot honestly there is nothing special about starc, he could easily be negotiated.

Butt is the only Pakistani with the offside game to thrive in Australia.

The next two games are red ball games.

Put him wherever. Just make sure he's there.

Bagwat Chandra had 260+ (264?) Test wickets & ~170 runs. For his FC teams, famously once his Captain declared when 9th wicket went down on 1st ball of the over.

The way Junaids talks about Salman Butt makes it seems as if his game and skill level was greater than Hayden, Lara and Sobers combined

If we can make it to the end of the day without another wicket down and day 4 washes out, we do have a chance of drawing this game. Batting is easier in the first two sessions.

This is I partially agree - may be at 6 or 7 (not joking), when ideally you expect to face the 2nd ball. And a lefti in middle order is like gold.

There's a chance of washout tomorrow?

Even if we get a washout tomorrow, we'll still have to play over a 100 overs and that should be sufficient for the Aussies to win the game

Some showers in the morning and that's just about it.

Brisbane has one of the best drainage systems in world cricket.

nah not better, but better than the current batch of jokers out there.

He's a guy the same age as Azhar Ali, a decade younger than Misbah or Younis, who averages 42 in Australia.

The guy averages 45 against Australia.

Yes that is an ok record at best

And if you go in detail you would see it's either boom or bust with one of the centuries coming in a dead rubber

Also the small fact that he hasn't played outside Pakistan for 6.5 years.

And while he was great in the QeA final he was at best, decent if you look at the domestic season in its entitety

In nets, it should be made a rule that batsmen don't wear helmet - this is creating false feel of security & modern players don't keep their eyes on bouncer. Babar was complete blind at that bouncer & offered his head. Unless, batsmen are made to watch the ball till it passes their ear or nose, don't think it's going to improve.

ICC might help them though by modernizing the game further - anything over shoulder at 135km is No ball & bowler's next over will be a free over

Bas kar bhai mere. That Fixer need to be kept away forever, don't understand why PCB didnt Ban him for Life a captain sold his country...😡

He was nothing special, had few good innings against aussies when he came to the scene. Apart from that he was mediocre player. I rather get Rizwan to open for us in the future.

90 overs. This is Australia, not India. We will have a chance, which is what I said.

In olden days, when it was difficult to connect through analog phone, once Ironmonger's wife call him at SCG dressing room sometimes in summer of 1920s, when he went for batting. So, his colleague told his wife that Henry has gone to bat - "no problem, I can wait for few minutes" - replied missus.

98 overs will be played on day 5, they make up 30 minutes everywhere. this was 60 minutes previously, but with 30 minutes scheduled delay, that makes almost 8 hours day, hence ICC has reduced it to 30 minutes/8 overs - which ever is earlier.

How did Misbah use Yasir Shah today? Negative leg stump stuff?

Yasir only bowled 10 overs.

In his second spell he bowled around the wicket and mostly on the offside. His first spell was rather poor and there were several rubbish deliveries that were hit for 4.

Over a hundred overs including the overs being played today.

I said we have to escape with all nine wickets today.

We do have a chance of batting out 98 overs provided we don't lose anymore tonight. Babar and Azhar will be hard to dislodge once they get to settle down in the morning session tomorrow.

Ok, disappointing. But at least not the legstump stuff.

Why Bird is so under rated? I understand, he doesn't crank it at 145KM, but he is as good a seem bowler as there are around now. Easily could have taken new ball for AUS without this pair & he'll be the go to guy for PAK team with new ball.

Playing at night is whole different challenge. They have to see through night session, plan tomorrow what to do.

I don't disagree limited range of shots is a problem. Specially on off-side, but again if you are going for drive at night, it's lot more risky

20 overs still remaining today, they need to see through those, that is task number 1, tomorrow they can score and play long innings. That should be plan.

I also am not liking D/N Tests - one reason is it starts at 10PM or later at Toronto; but the main reason is it makes the game one sided. We bash lot about Indian (Asian) wicket that toss determines the match, it's even more skewed in D/N Test.

Runs have slowed up. But I just hope we don't lose another wicket today.

Yep. Key is to not lose a wicket tonight, if these two can survive then they will have the chance to cash in and score some runs tomorrow when conditions are much easier.

Trust me Pakistan will give this Australia team a phainti in the next. Smith who i found most annoying batsmen to watch will find out. Day night game aren't fair because of the toss determines if you win or lose.

First session maybe a wash out

Azhar is the best man to lead in test cricket he has earned it, most reliable batsmen in thre team. Good player

A bit too reliable sometimes but he is a Test specialist, no doubt. Regarding Captaincy, his Hamilton experience wasn't great though.

How has he earned it?

You don't earn the captaincy by batting well. You need to be a leader.

Butt is the only qualified guy, but I don't want him, I'd try Sarfraz in the hope that either Sami Aslam or Babar Azam is ready in two years.

IMHO both Salman Butt and Azhar Ali are too old by a good five years to be the new skipper.

So I'd use Sarfraz as a stopgap.

People here on PP don't like having to rate Australian players.

There is a weird quandary between claiming that Smith and Warner only ever make easy runs without extending that logic to Starc and Hazlewood continually getting wickets on those same pitches.

Bird actually complements Starc and Hazlewood far more than Pattinson and Cummins would.

Chandrashekhar - the original Jack. In fact, his ~170 career Test run came at a much faster rate than even Sobers - it was easier for him to hit a 4 or 6 than stay at wicket for 6 balls.

Is this a joke?

The previous two Day/Night Tests in Australia were won by the side batting second.

Pakistan just disrespected the format by playing four Number Elevens, so they could not recover from the inevitable floodlit collapse.

No not really, Smith declared half an hour too late and Starc and Hazlewood are tired.
