5 Tests vs Eng n then 3 vs SA away tough times ahead with last 9 outings as

W 0 D 2 L 7

England still with the upper hand I had say. Of course they need to have a bat first.

England definitely have a huge edge. They have 7 OZ wickets back in the sheds. Of course we need to see how well they bat tomorrow but the OZ will have to bowl really well to stay in it.

Happy to get past 250 though...at one stage 200 looked to be a stretch. 350 minimum was the score I was looking at before play, without knowing anything about the wicket or anything. First innings at the Gabba is usually the time to get some runs.

I think Boof should partly be blamed for this Barbie masterclass.

The more you wind him up the better he bowls. I guess unlike a Johnno who starts bowling at the leg slip when the crowd and oppo put him under a bit of pressure.

Regardless of how close or one sided the test matches are, test matches in Australia, England still get in people. The atmosphere is amazing.

This only happens in ODIs in sub continent. [Forget Tendulkars last 2 matches...thats a whole other story]

Happy with Lyon in there or would you have gone out with an all pace attack?

weather forecast for day 4 is dodgy . Should be a draw if we lose any significant number of overs .

8 down now time for Haddin to hit out and try to get his ton

I don't think there's any quick available who I would consider replacing Garry with. Patto, Cummins, Starc and Bird are all injured, Hazelwood is promising but unproven. Garry deserves his chance. Plus with four quicks there's too much of a sameness about the attack. Clarke can't really bowl long spells due to his back, and Warner and Smith are too much of "hit me" bowlers. They bowl too many loose deliveries.

Lyon's not the greatest, and offies generally don't do too well in OZ due to the hardness of the pitches but he deserves his opportunity.

Something wrong with the speed gun? Haven't seen any thing go over high 130s all day.

This pitch will help spinners on day 5 . Temperatures are around 33 & we will have a really dry surface by then .

Rain is forecasted for the last couple of days though.

Swann averages a mighty 45 in Australia :110: No country for offies this. Would have loved to see Patto or Cummins running in though.

Australia can push to a substantial total if Harris can bat well and make a good 30 or 40

260 odd might be below par but certainly a competitive score

It's competitive against a good side. If we get to 300 I will be satisfied with the day's play, given the context. It's below par for sure, but something to work with. I'm sure the Poms would have been looking to roll us under 200 after that spell from Bambi.

Even 7 years after our team of greats broke up after the 2006 Ashes, fans who grew up Australian teams dominate still use our successes a decade or so ago as a yardstick for us. If we're not scoring 3/400 on the first day we're doing shyte basically. Because well that's what our team used to do. I have much more realistic expectations of this team because I started watching cricket back in the 80s, and I know what it's like to have a team of scrappers.

People also have a tendency to write teams off on the basis of a few sessions worth of play. It's a long series. I want to see how England take advantage of this opportunity, which they should as one of the top teams in the world. I also want to see how the Ozzies come back after this adversity, because that's a mark of how they will have developed as a team. They've been talked up by both themselves as well as media pundits because of how they finished the series in England - now they have suffered a setback on Day 1 of the series. I want to see how they respond. The technical skills can be worked on, but the attitude has to be right from the start.

I'll take that.

Even Warne admits that it's England's day.

That's the first day done then. Thought there were few more overs left. Not to be. Overall a good day of cricket. Aus will be stoked if they can somehow get to 300-320 tomorrow. Still prolly well below par though.

Just the nature of the OZ wickets. They find it hard to get some bite on these harder wickets as they don't break up as much as say in the subcontinent. Many great offies have strugged on these shores. Leggies tend to do a lot better, just because of the mechanics of how they bowl.

Definitely England's day. Closer than it looked halfway through the afternoon session though. Haddin and MJ may have just made a game of it.

Well they already went way past what would have been the closing time. England's over rate was pretty ordinary.

We need 500.

Anything 400 or below and we risk losing due to batting last.

Well, considering that Johnny boy came to the crease with OZ somewhere around 150/6, I thought it would be difficult to cross 200 from here. But to see them inch to 300 with two wickets in the bank, I would say good recovery from the aussies.

England on the other hand, continue to impress. They've been relentless to say the least.

Leave to my exam just after Clarke goes out. Comeback and Johnson and Haddin saved us from complete disgrace.

Feeling sort of confident. When Johnson performs with bat or ball he generally performs with the other.

Never been a fan or barbie as a bowler, but he seems to have a nack of bowling spells in game where he can blow away a side yet 90% of the rest of the time he looks like a county trundler. Fair does to him, hes taking the flak from the Aussie fans and channelled it into a brilliant 1st day bowling performance. Englands day by far and as expected Aussies flimsy batting has already been exposed and series is only 1 day old. In Particular it seems as the series goes along england may start to target the skipper clarke with the short ball as hes had a few struggles lately.

Good luck with the exam Conners old chap!

Pleased by England's performance today. Australia got first use of a belter and ENG restricted them nicely. It just shows how important the new ball is.

Delighted for Broad - hopefully Boof's tactics will continue to backfire. I'd love to see Broad get another hundred.

Thanks.

I've said a few times over the past month or so but I had a strong feeling Broad was going to be the main bowler for England this series.

Just had another look at Twatto's dismissal - he really needs to learn to have a bit more of a poker face. He has the worst body language in the world, looks like a dog that's being given a bath when he gets given out.

We could also hear his reaction.

Cook, Carberry, Trott along with Harris and Jhonson will determine how this game pans out. If England still have their top order batsmen at the crease once the ball gets old, I can only see an innings victory here for England.

England's day for sure, even with that partnership we are a still going to be at least 150 behind what you would want/expect bating first on that track.

massive opportunity lost and pissweak stuff again from our top 6, you have to wonder where they are going to score runs if they can't even get them in these conditions.

Same old garbage, 3 of the top 6 out for nothing, the guys who got set wafted catches, lower order bails us out yet again.

Had to get 400 on that track. Flat wicket, home crowd, batting first, batsmen still suck.

Broad bowled very well, deserved his haul.

Batting paradise but there is some nice bounce and carry. England on top right now but Aus not out of it.

Ashes lost it's charm, no star players in Aussie side. This is a side that had Mark Waugh, Taylor, McGrath, Langer, Punter and now we have Steven Smith and Clarke who is Broad's bunny. Boring Ashes or maybe England is just way too good.

England/Broad did really well but I feel Aussies will be disappointed with some of the dismissals.

The partnership between Haddin and Johnson could be priceless though.

Anything over 320 would be better than what they would of got at 100-5.

Thanks.

Aye, you have.

I think he's still improving. We know he can bowl some venomous old-balls spells out of nowhere, but he seems to be getting more consistent generally. Future 400-wicket man.

Now if only he can remember how to bat like we know he can, he can still be The New Hadlee. The great Sir Richard didn't start getting consistently good until he was the age Broad is now.

Wont say its England's day.

Because Australia's best batsman are no. 10 and no.11 :D

Aussies will need to shoot our england for a similar 1st inns score if they are to stay in this match, pretty poor effort from there top 6 in the 1st dig.

Also seeing the shot Clarke played.

It's over. His back is just gone.

Seeing as last time he was carrying a serious injury at Brisbane that he soon succumbed to at Adelaide, this was the first real time that we have seen a fit and firing Barbie on Australian wickets. Got to say that he looked pretty lethal, off any length.
