It's competitive against a good side. If we get to 300 I will be satisfied with the day's play, given the context. It's below par for sure, but something to work with. I'm sure the Poms would have been looking to roll us under 200 after that spell from Bambi.
Even 7 years after our team of greats broke up after the 2006 Ashes, fans who grew up Australian teams dominate still use our successes a decade or so ago as a yardstick for us. If we're not scoring 3/400 on the first day we're doing shyte basically. Because well that's what our team used to do. I have much more realistic expectations of this team because I started watching cricket back in the 80s, and I know what it's like to have a team of scrappers.
People also have a tendency to write teams off on the basis of a few sessions worth of play. It's a long series. I want to see how England take advantage of this opportunity, which they should as one of the top teams in the world. I also want to see how the Ozzies come back after this adversity, because that's a mark of how they will have developed as a team. They've been talked up by both themselves as well as media pundits because of how they finished the series in England - now they have suffered a setback on Day 1 of the series. I want to see how they respond. The technical skills can be worked on, but the attitude has to be right from the start.
