Azhar Ali (73), F Zaman (71) & Usman Salahuddin star on Day 1 of 2-day game against Leicestershire

This weekend represents a fantastic opportunity for some of the younger members of the Leicestershire CCC squad to pit their wits against some stars of the international game.

Pakistan visit the Fischer County Ground for the two-day tourist match sponsored by Regal Bakery fresh from a five-wicket test match victory over Ireland.

The game could see six graduates of Leicestershire CCC's flourishing Academy on show, including Lewis Hill, who will captain the side for the first time.

Young batsman Sam Evans is included in the squad as the weekend fixture does not clash with his studies at Loughborough University.

Tom Wells and Harry Swindells come into the game on the back of posting terrific hundreds for the Second XI in the Trophy match against MCC Young Cricketers at Lutterworth CC yesterday.

All-rounder Zak Chappell is in line for his first red ball appearance of the season after making a comeback from injury against Northants Steelbacks, while Aadil Ali and current Academy all-rounder Ben Mike are also in the 12.

Richard Jones is back having completed a successful comeback from injury for the Second XI yesterday, taking three of the four wickets to fall.

Leicestershire CCC Second XI Coach Tom Smith is taking the side and is looking forward to a good test of skills against an international team.

He said: “This represents a really exciting fixture for the group. As a bowler you will immediately put yourself in the mix if you take wickets against test match batsmen and, as a batsman, runs against international bowlers is only going to benefit your confidence.”

The fixture is final preparation for the Pakistan squad before their test series against England. The Ireland game saw Leicestershire CCC overseas bowler Muhammad Abbas pick up nine wickets in the match: four in the first innings and five in the second.

Abbas’ success came as no surprise to Head Coach Paul Nixon. “We know how much quality Mo [Muhammad Abbas] possesses and the skill he can bowl with,” said Nixon.

“It’ll be great to see Mo back at the Fischer County Ground and to catch up with him before he returns in the middle of June after the test series.”

The format of the fixture is two innings per side with the side batting first in the first innings allowed to face a maximum of 100 overs of bowling. The hours of play are 11:00 until 18:00 with lunch taken at 13:00 and tea at 15:40.

Leicestershire CCC (from 12): Hill (capt), Aadil, Chappell, Dearden, Evans, Javid, Jones, Klein, Mike, Swindells (wk), Taylor, Well

Are they fielding a kiddie side? :mv

Note the format of the game:

Pakistan take-on Leics in a 2-Day warm-up game before the start of the Test series against England at Lord's on 24th May; The format of this game is 2 innings per side with the side batting first in the first innings allowed to face a maximum of 100 overs of bowling #Cricket

For those who don't know - Leicestershire finished bottom of Division 2 last season and didn't win a single game out of 14 games.

It appears we'll be facing a second string team too.

So if you can't perform against these...

Net practice. Maybe should have played another Test vs Ireland!

given its a warm up game, Usman S and Saad A and Fakhr should be given a chance. Inam should our bench player could be better than one in the playing XI.

So all the bench player from ireland test are playing
Azhar ali
Fakhar zaman
Sami aslam
Usman
Saad ali
Sarfraz ahmed
Shadab khan
Fahim ashrf
Hasan ali
Rahat ali
Abbas

So it’s a bat-off for Haris Sohail’s Test position.

Azhar will never improve with histuk tuk timid attitude. Waste a lad of balls and score almost nothing

I don’t see it this way. Who ever who is not playing today is in the squad for England. People that are playing today are either in there for match practice or show their potential as backups if needed.

Anyway good chance for Fakhar, Saad and Usman to grab attention

Which is fantastic...Great intiative from MA and SA unlike the previous times of MISBAH where he,MYK, AZHAR and ASAD will play all and every match.

Hatsoff MA and SA. :salute

I dont think so.. This leicestershire team is full of newbies and MA wouldnt swap a no.3 position that quickly and also he adds with his bowling too.

Only possibility is Azhar coming to no.3 to regain his form and they play either fakhar or sami with imam as openers...

But Haris so far has done well and i think MA see him as the best no.3 to play in test cricket inspite of the slow guns (AA and AS)

We need both Saad and Usman more than Haris, Fakhar and Sami. Imam is far better than timid Sami (can't afford two timid players in the opening), Fakhar should be used for LOI and Haris is not patient enough to play test matches.

I had predicted this XI in the pre-match thread. Although, I did think Fakhar would bat at 5 and Sami would open, and I had Sarf batting below Saad Ali.

Like I said, Haris, Imam, Shafiq and Babar have all had atleast one 50+ score so far this tour. So they have had some time out in the middle. The bench does need some game time while Sarf and Azhar need to regain form.

So it’s a bat-off for Haris Sohail’s Test position.

No, I don't think so. Not for Lords anyway. I don't think this match will have any bearing on the selection for the first Test. I think the same XI that played Irealand will play in Lords, with the exception of Hassan in for Rahat (provided Amir is fit).

I’ll keep saying this until i’m Blue in the face!

Fakhar has to open.

Good that Saad Ali and Usman Salahuddin will get time in the middle.

This looks a flat deck, and against a weak attack this is an ideal opportunity to get runs under your belt before Lord's.

Fakhar might actually end up scoring a century in the first session. 3 overs left.

I don't really understand this line up. Batsmen will want as many matches to practice as they can get. And they've hardly had any. All batsmen who are playing the England test should be playing. We should have tested out Saad, Usman or Fakhar before, instead of now where we're playing all three of them.

Even if one of them does well, I don't understand how they're coming into the team. I don't see any batsmen being dropped, Asad and Azhar too much experience, Imam got a score as did Babar. And does Haris deserve to be dropped after one bad game, when he scored a half century in each of his first two tests. I don't think Fahim is being dropped either, they'll stick to the five bowlers plan.

I disagree, how else do you test your bench strength. How else do you know someone in the playing XI is is better than the guys playing.

Imagine if Usman plays and hits a big 100. Asad gets a 0 and 1 in the next Test. Atleast you know for the third game dropping Asad is an option

Got out slogging. I am all for aggression but a wild slog such as that needs to be put away for the longer format. Good signs though.

There's only two tests. That means it is likely that a player regardless of his performance in the practice match will only come in if we lose the first test. They won't change a winning combination.

On the other hand, you're depriving practice time for guys who will actually play the first test. As I said these are alien conditions for our batsmen, most are desperate for practice.

I'm not sure it's a great idea to test the bench strength out in case we lose the first test. I'd rather just give the players the best chance of winning the first test.

If certain players had failed against Ireland, it'd be different as I think other players such as fakhar, Usman, Saad would push for a spot against England in the first test. But that didn't happen, Imam and Babar who IMO were the most likely to be dropped if they didn't get a score, performed. Hence there's no real free spots. And with Amir's injury and seemingly no cover being flown in, I think both Fahim and Rahat will play now.

Tuk tuk galore. Most boring pair in our cricket history!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tuk tuk galore. Most boring pair in our cricket history!!!!!!!!!!!!

Pak can only bat MAX 100 overs I hope the 2 new guys will get some overs to bat.

Whats the point of azhar and sami tuk tukking against these kids? Azhar got a 50 he can retire.

So Fakhar should open with Imam and Azhar should come at number 3 with Sohail at 4...
Alternatively Azhar at 4 with Sohail at 3...
Whatever happens though, Fakhar should be opening!

I can see his name going on the Lords honours board.

Sami Aslam 5 from 20 against some unknown kids. He embodies everything that is wrong with Pakistan cricket.

I remember when Fakhar first debuted in the T20 side half of PP called him names such as hack or tullay baaz or he is too slow for short ball. Some PP experts predicted his career would be over within 6 months.

Fakhar then went onto not only cement his spot in our LOI sides, he became our best batsman in them and also won us a world tournament. Now he is on the verge of a test cap.

That is why they say don't ignore domestic stats.

Allah al-haq hai

calling this bowling a weak attack is an understatement
From their stats, this bowling looks to be gali mohalla level attack

Rahat would fit in well with them

Come on Sami Aslam - this is the worst team in the County Championship by a mile but he's still scoring at a snail's pace.

My final lineup would be:
Imam
FAKHAR
Azhar
Sohail
Shafiq
Sarfraz
Faheem
Shadab
Amir
Hasan
Abbas

With this lineup, Pakistan have their greatest chance to win.
As this lineup can bat till deep and has 5 proper bowling options.

This Sami is really something. Young player with massive amount of timidness, negativity and tuktuking. Shouldn't be anywhere next to any first class team.

There was a time when this was our opening pair... Either we had early wickets or we had 10 overs for 10 runs.

And there goes the next 20 overs.... Watch Azhar and Sami play the next overs at a run-rate of 2.. Agree with Darkrai, Sami is the physical embodiment of everything wrong with Pakistan cricket

Funnily enough Sami consistently has one of the highest SRs in domestic ODI and T20 tournaments.... But in international cricket he is like a fish out of water.

The guy has no water....He hasn't been comfortable anywhere he has played.....and as I'm saying that he gets out

What would really muddy the waters is if Usman gets a nice 70 odd....

Sami has issues he still has not worked on them.

Shame that in Pakistan players and coaches are useless and do not work on their game.

Azhar eyeing up a 100 and then should retire and let Saad and Shafiq have some time in the middle.

With only 100 overs to bat, they should try and let as many of them to have a bat and get some runs under their belts.

Not really!!! He has lack of ability and braveness to overcome is limitation. Can't blame coach for that

Against a weak team, but Azhar needed this outing - should be allowed to bat full 100 overs, if he stays there.
