After Chattogram classic, West Indies, Bangladesh set for decider
Ban v WI, 2nd Test, preview

After managing among the great feats of escapology in Test cricket, West Indies will go again against Bangladesh in the second Test in Dhaka, with the visitors hoping for a rare series win in Asia.

Overview

Bangladesh v West Indies, 2nd Test
Sher-E-Bangla National Stadium, Mirpur, Dhaka
11-15 February; 9.30am local time, 3.30am GMT

The last time West Indies managed to win a series comprising more than one Test in Asia was in 2012, when they beat Bangladesh 2-0. Their hopes of repeating that feat were given a big boost by their performance in the first Test, when the Kyle Myers scored a debut double-century to lead them to a historic, improbable win.

It would have been a fine achievement for any team, let alone one devoid of their regular captain and a host of mainstays. The question now is whether Phil Simmons, the coach, can condition the side to face the inevitable Bangladesh fightback that will follow.

Bangladesh were dealt a blow towards that end in the lead-up to the series, when Shakib Al Hasan, their ace all-rounder, was ruled out of the second Test after failing to recover from a groin injury. Soumya Sarkar was named as a replacement by the Bangladesh Cricket Board on Tuesday, and it remains to be seen if he makes the XI straightaway.

Sarkar last played a Test in September 2019 against Afghanistan, when he scored 17 and 15. If he makes the XI this time around, he will hope to improve on those returns. Bangladesh will need him to.

They will also be without the services of their opening batsman, Shadman Islam, who was ruled out with a hip injury, ahead of the Dhaka clash.

Remember the last time

It was a classic. Batting first, Bangladesh posted 430 after a fine, maiden century from Mehidy Hasan. In response, West Indies struggled, and managed just 260, largely thanks to a fighting 68 from Jermaine Blackwood.

In the second innings, Mominul Haque, the Bangladesh captain, scored a 10th Test century – the first time by a Bangladesh batsman – the home side declared at 223/8, setting West Indies a hefty target of 395. Almost improbably, on a fifth-day pitch, Myers and Nkrumah Bonner, two debuts, put on a double-century partnership to drive West Indies to the target, with Myers fitting scoring the winning runs in an unbeaten 210*.

What they said

Mominul Haque, Bangladesh captain: “We lost, but we got some positives. We played the first innings as a team, and we dominated first four days.”

Phil Simmons, West Indies coach: “We have to make sure we don't go backwards again. We are trying hard to put things in place so that we don't go in that direction."

Toss was very important for this mentality fragile team and they like at it. Batting first has already put WI in a commanding position

BD doing a mistake by playing only one pacer and making spinning pitches, it may backfire.

WI batting really slow here , negative batting , this way they not going anywhere , they need to start rotating the strike.

BD need to produce better pitches to improve their cricket , they are producing very dull cricket

WI get to 100 runs finally after 39 overs , right now they should have been at least 135 on the board

BD management is taking this team more backwards. BD don't have any world class spinner in their team. They should let their pacers mature and develop but they are doing the opposite.

Will 300 be a competitive first innings score for the West Indies? It's always hard to judge with a depleted side whether they have made conditions seem tougher than the actual case.

Bangladesh is so pathetic in test matches, ideally they shouldn't be in next round of WTC but they will be there & most probably they will end up last once again without single point to their name.

We picked mediocre batsmen in the form of Mithun and Soumya. Massive downgrade from Shakib and Shadman.

It's a very flat pitch and 400 is a par total here but for a hapless BD side 300 is more than enough.

The West Indies have added close to a hundred runs before lunch today. 350 should be a very competitive first-innings score.

Bangladesh needs to prepare better pitches, otherwise, their one-dimensional attack will remain same. If Bangladesh want to improve as a Test Team , they need to get better pace attack

Just one seamer? BD is like India at home during the 90s.

At least India won games at home, unlike Bangladesh. I have no doubt in my mind that the Bangladeshi team is the worst test side ever. They shouldn't be part of ICC WTC, they should play a few years with Zim, Afg & Ireland.

Easy there mate. BD have drawn all their last series against SENA teams at home.

Against NZ drawn 0-0 in 2013
Against SA drawn 0-0 in 2015
Against Eng drawn 1-1 in 2016
Against Aus drawn 1-1 in 2017

Please also mention their defeats, probably 2-0 this series & the time they lost a test match vs Afghanistan who were playing their 2nd ever test match if I'm not wrong.

Bangladesh need a pace bowling revolution.
Missing the long essays on how Pakistan will soon be competing with Uganda from our Bangladeshi friend.

Happy for westindies and Ian Bishop.

Day 2: Stumps - Bangladesh trail by 304 runs

Toss : West Indies won the toss and decided to bat first.

West Indies : 409/10 in 90 overs (Bonner 74*, Brathwaite 47, Campbell 32; Abu Jayed 2/46, Taijul 2/64, Soumya 1/30)

Bangladesh : 105/4 in 36 overs (Tamim 44, Mushfiqur 27*, Mithun 6*; Gabriel 2/31, Conrwall 1/34)

The visitors took charge in the second day of second Test as Tigers had a torrid day with both bat and ball. At stumps, Bangladesh managed to post 105 for 4 and trailing by 304 runs. Earlier West Indies were all out for 409 in the first innings.

Two unbeaten overnight batsmen Bonner and Joshua resumed the West Indies innings with 223 for 5. They batted sensibly in the first hour as bowlers were searching for the wickets. Finally it was Mehidy Hasan who gave the first breakthrough of the day by dismissing Bonner for 90. Then Joseph joined with Joshua and they added 118 runs in the sixth wicket to frustrate the Bangladesh bowlers.

Just before the tea break Abu Jayed led the fightback with couple of wickets but the damage was the done as Joshua and Joseph’s two fifty-plus knock helped them score past the 400 runs mark. Abu Jayed and Taijul grabbed 4 wickets each.

In response, Bangladesh lost 2 wickets for just 11 as Soumya Sarkar and Najmul Hossain Shanto got out cheaply. Skipper Mominul looked good but could not convert his innings to a big one as he gone after scoring. Tamim played an counter-attacking knock before Gabriel dismissed him for 44 as Bangladesh were in all sorts of trouble on 71 for 4.

From there, Mushfiqur Rahim and Mohammad Mithun batted with patience as the duo ensured no more further trouble before end of the day’s play. Mushfiqur was remained unbeaten on 27 and Mithun was on 6. Gabriel bagged 2 wickets for 31 for West Indies.

Still there's no excuse for losing to Afghans and now probably a whitewash against WI reserves at home.

BD has lost interest in this format or the previous match heroics has them bogged down big time.

Yes, but Pak lost 1-2 to NZ in UAE in 2018, while BD's last series against NZ at home was a draw. That tells you that this BD side isn't the worst side ever, that was my point.

Bangladesh should be stripped off Test status. They devalue the format.

Zimbabwe and Ireland should not have Test statuses also.

West Indies had a field day in Dhaka on Friday, 12 February, as they posted a fine 409 before restricting Bangladesh to 105/4 by stumps.

Joshua Da Silva was at the heart of it all, scoring 92, and putting on partnerships with Nkrumah Bonner and Alzarri Joseph to help West Indies achieve their first objective of posting a tall first-innings total.

The bowlers then took over, with Shannon Gabriel taking two wickets, as Bangladesh were reduced to 71/4 before Mushfiqur Rahim and Mohammad Mithun taking them past the 100-mark.

West Indies resumed on their overnight 223/5, with Bonner and Da Silva in the middle. They frustrated the Bangladesh bowlers in the first hour, adding 43 runs to their overnight partnership to extend it to 88. Da Silva was assured in his defence, even as Mehidy Hasan found his inside-edge a few times, while Bonner edged his way into the 90s.

Bonner was instrumental in West Indies’ monumental win in the first Test, and he looked good for a maiden Test century this time around. That is till Mehidy Hasan confounded him, placing a leg slip and turning one into him. Bonner fended it straight to the fielder, and Bangladesh had their first wicket of the day.

If the hosts hoped that wicket would turn the tide, it wasn’t to be. Joseph took the attack to the bowlers, putting the spinners off their lines, and tonking a few boundaries. The run-rate accelerated, and the duo put on a 118-run partnership to assert West Indies’ dominance.

Da Silva brought up his half-century, with a reverse-sweep for four, and the two carried on, with Joseph bringing up his own later during their association. The Bangladesh bowlers just couldn’t hit their straps, as the batsmen routinely found the fence, and seventh-wicket partnership took West Indies closer to 400.

The breakthrough came from Taijul, the left-arm spinner, who sent one in straight and full, and through the gap between Da Silva’s bat and pad. The wicket triggered a slide. Joseph followed suit shortly thereafter, having scored a 108-ball 82, and caught down leg off Abu Jayed.

Jomel Warrican and Shannon Gabriel scored in single digits but did enough to take the score past 400, and the innings break prompted early tea.

The final session didn’t go Bangladesh’s way. They lost two wickets within the first three overs, with Soumya Sarkar, who replaced the injured Shakib Al Hasan, dismissed for nought, and Najmul Hossain Shanto managing just 4 before falling in Gabriel’s second over.

Tamim Iqbal and Mominul Haque then revived the innings, putting on 58 for the third wicket, but two more quick wickets hindered the hosts significantly. It was Rahkeem Cornwall who broke through, firing one in wide and prompting Mominul into a rash drive. Tamim wouldn’t have been too happy with his dismissal either, attempting a flick and sending it straight to short mid-wicket.

At 71/4, Bangladesh were in real danger of imploding, with two new men in the middle, but Rahim and Mithun put on a solid 34* to arrest the slide and take the total past the 100-run mark. They have plenty more to do on the third morning.

Wait, what they lost a TEST match vs Afghanistan?

West Indies B competing in Bangladesh. West Indies will do well at home in my opinion. They have some decent batters, some good fast bowlers, and a great leader in Holder.

Bangladesh fighting a bit now - lets see what deficit they end up with.

Bangladesh in a spot of bother once again.

Windies already 2 down in their 2nd innings.

Some pretty poor batting in this match.

As things stand, Bangladesh are staring at a 2-0 sweep by the hands of WI B on home soil .

West Indies stretched their lead to 154 at stumps on day three after Rahkeem Cornwall's five-for helped bowl Bangladesh out for 296.

With the visitors on 41/3, the fourth day will be crucial for both teams as they will fight for control.

West Indies have a slight advantage, having secured a healthy first-innings lead. However, Bangladesh's strong spin attack will have different plans tomorrow.

Looking to make amends after collapsing, Bangladesh struck back with a wicket in the fourth over, Nayeem Hasan turning one sharply down the leg-side as Kraigg Brathwaite gloved it to the 'keeper.

West Indies barely got time to regroup before Shayne Moseley became Mehidy Hasan's 100th victim in Tests. Mehidy became the fastest Bangladesh bowler to the landmark, achieving the feat in only his 24th match.

John Campbell then paired with Nkrumah Bonner to stabilise the innings but fell prey to an unfortunate dismissal – the ball trickling off the toe-end of his bat, bouncing and taking the top of off.

Bonner and Jomel Warrican then saw off the remaining four overs with little trouble.

Earlier, Mohammad Mithun and Mushfiqur Rahim started day three positively. Mushfiqur brought about his 22nd Test half-century with ease and for a moment it looked like the hosts were in complete control. However, the West Indies captain, Brathwaite, brought in Cornwall to bowl and the change worked wonders for the visitors.

Mithun was undone by a careless stroke, hitting it straight down the throat of the man at short mid-wicket and Cornwall would have snared Mushfiqur in the same over if not for a spilled chance at short-leg. However, he did remove Mushfiqur two overs later as the batsman miscued the reverse sweep and ended up giving a simple catch to cover.

Bangladesh needed someone to rebuild for them and Liton Das and Mehidy Hasan did just that. They joined forces to negate the West Indies bowlers and stuck to the plan. They first avoided the follow-on and then turned their focus on eating into the deficit.

Liton was the first to bring up his half-century, his seventh in the format, with back-to-back fours off Bonner. Taking the second new ball did not bring a change in fortunes of the visiting bowlers as even Mehidy brought up his half-century.

The partnership also crossed the century-mark and by tea, Bangladesh were 137 runs behind with both Liton and Mehidy looking set at the crease. It was not to last though as West Indies clawed back in the final session.

First to depart was Liton, in the fourth over after tea. He got a faint edge off his bat that was gobbled up by the wicket-keeper. Two balls later, Cornwall dismissed Nayeem for a duck – completing his second five-wicket haul in Tests.

Gabriel then joined the party, removing Mehidy for 57 in the next over. The last-wicket pair of Taijul Islam and Abu Jayed could only add 13 more runs as the hosts folded on 296.

SL lose 2-0 to England

Bangladesh all set to lose 2-0 to WI B.

India lose by 200+ runs to England.

Despite losing 3 wickets in the final session, West Indies are in a comfortable position to win this game.

Lead is now worth 154 runs.

50 . 3

BD lead by 163 runs here, any lead of over 300 will be hard to chase , around 250 is what BD would be hoping for.

Morning wicket has fallen . Don't think the lead will stretch to 300 . Maybe WI will get a lead of around 250 or 275 Max...Bangaldesh have lot of Batsmen in their line-up, they are in with an outside chance.

275 can be chased unless WI bowlers can produce good bowling.

WI needs to start rotating strike here , instead of looking for boundaries, they need to get ones and twos here.

Big session here , BD would love to restrict WI to 250 lead here , WI would want as many as possible, WI start the post lunch session with 215 runs ahead and 4 wickets standing

Bonner and Joshua have added 30 runs so far , a little cameo partnerships from the remaining three wickets can get them another 50 , which they would be wanting dearly.
