Bangladesh tour of the West Indies (2022)

Rovman Powell helped West Indies put together a big score at home and Bangladesh fell short in reply as the hosts claimed the series lead in the second T20I.

The West Indies got even contributions from a couple of players in their top-order, but it was the big hitting of Rovman Powell late in the innings that ultimately proved the difference between the two teams.

Powell came to the crease in the 13th over with the score at 100/3 and produced some superb late-order hitting to help West Indies amass a massive score of 193/5 from their 20 overs.

The talented right-hander took 23 from one Shakib Al Hasan over and ended up with a total of six maximums from his entertaining 28-ball knock that netted an unbeaten 61

It was no surprise that Powell was later named Player of the Match for his batting efforts.

Bangladesh needed to score at almost 10 runs an over to claim victory and veteran all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan certainly played his part as he contributed an unbeaten 68.

The issue was he received little support from his team-mates as wickets fell at regular intervals and Bangladesh fell some 35 runs short of victory.

It was the Bangladesh top-order that failed to fire, with openers Anamul Haque (3) and Liton Das (5) going cheaply and skipper Mahmudullah (11) not fairing much better after coming in at No.4.

A 55-run stand between Shakib and Afif Hossain (34) provided the visitors with a glimmer of hope, but West Indies' captain Nicholas Pooran rotated his bowlers well to ensure the victory target was never seriously threatened.

With the ICC Men's T20 World Cup just months away, West Indies are quietly putting together a decent squad that may surprise a few in Australia.

Pooran is impressing in his role as captain, while the likes of Rovman Powell and Romario Shepherd provide that late order hitting we have come accustomed to from strong West Indies sides over the years.

Their bowling attack is decent too, with Hayden Walsh's leg-spin providing the perfect support act to a bevy of quicks that mix their pace up well.

If it all comes together at the T20 World Cup then there is no reason why the Caribbean side can’t feature at the pointy end of the tournament.

Bangladesh have won the toss and have opted to bat

Bangladesh (Playing XI): Anamul Haque, Litton Das, Shakib Al Hasan, Mahmudullah(c), Afif Hossain, Nurul Hasan(w), Mosaddek Hossain, Mahedi Hasan, Nasum Ahmed, Shoriful Islam, Mustafizur Rahman

West Indies (Playing XI): Brandon King, Kyle Mayers, Shamarh Brooks, Nicholas Pooran(w/c), Rovman Powell, Romario Shepherd, Odean Smith, Dominic Drakes, Akeal Hosein, Obed McCoy, Hayden Walsh

Devon Thomas and Keemo Paul have been ruled out of the third and final T20 International against Bangladesh on Thursday. Thomas, the wicket-keeper/batter held three catches during the first T20I at Windsor Park, Dominica but unfortunately sustained a thigh strain. The injury kept him out of the second T20I. Paul, the seam-bowling allrounder, played in the second match as a replacement for Thomas. He complained of flu-like symptoms on Thursday. He remained at the team hotel and has been tested for COVID-19.

Cricket West Indies’ (CWI) Men’s Selection Panel named left-handed allrounder Dominic Drakes as the replacement for the third match at the Guyana National Stadium.

West Indies have a 1-0 lead heading into the final match. The first match was a no result due to rain and West Indies won the second by 35 runs.

BAN 80/2 (11.2) CRR: 7.06

Reasonable for Bangladesh but need to get a move on now

Run rate is 8.00.

They have given the bowlers something to defend but West Indies should chase this down.

Bangladesh should always play 3-4 spinners against a team like West Indies (in these conditions).

Not sure why they played 3 pacers last game.

West Indies won by 5 wkts

Mustafizur seems extremely innocuous. He has given up test cricket so he needs to perform better then this to make that decision justified.

The left-hander was in top form in Guyana, hitting five fours and five sixes in a successful chase over Bangladesh.

Coming down the pitch to put opposition skipper Mahmudullah over the fence, Nicholas Pooran put an exclamation mark not only on his own innings, but an emphatic series victory for his West Indies side.

Finishing with 74* (39), his highest score in the international format, Pooran again showed his power in an expert innings, treating the fans at the Providence Stadium to an exhibition.

The knock moved Pooran's career T20I strike rate above 130, with his average on the verge of ticking over an even 30.

Mayers adds another feather in his cap

The versatility of 29-year-old Kyle Mayers again made headlines, this time in the T20I format with his maiden half-century in the format.

Winning a Test match off his own bat against the same opponent with a glorious double century back in February 2021, Mayers this time turned up the aggression, plundering 55 off just 38 balls with five sixes to give the hosts the ideal start to their chase.

He put on 85 in just 51 balls with Pooran, brushing off Bangladesh challenges in the middle overs and setting up his side's final blitz to reach the target.

Bangladesh blues continue as they turn to ODIs

The match may have ended in another defeat for Mahmudullah's men, though it wasn't all bad with a number of strong individual performances.

Mahedi Hasan's 1/21 (4) kept the tourists in the hunt, after strong batting efforts from Liton Das (49 off 41) and Afif Hossain (50 off 38).

Despite their efforts, Bangladesh are still winless on tour, as their attention turns to the upcoming ODIs.

The matches are not part of the ongoing Cricket World Cup Super League, of which they sit in second, though the side will want to keep up their good form in the format to ensure the wheels don't fall off at the backend of the campaign.

Thought Afif Hossain was one of the few positives for Bangladesh in what was another disappointing series.

Just watching the highlights of the 3rd T20 and he seems like a promising youngster.

Cricket West Indies’ (CWI) Senior Men’s Selection Panel has named Romario Shepherd in the 13-member squad to face Bangladesh in the three-match CG United One-Day International (ODI) Series. Shepherd was originally a reserve but will now replace Keemo Paul, who tested positive for COVID-19 and is therefore unavailable. Odean Smith has been added as the reserve.

Shepherd bowled well in the recent T20 International (T20I) Series, where he was the leading wicket-taker with 6 wickets (average 11.33; economy 7.5) including a career-best 3-21 in the first T20I at Windsor Park, Dominica. He will now have the opportunity, subject to selection, to play more games in front of his home crowd at the Guyana National Stadium.

The CG United ODI Series is due to bowl off on Sunday. First ball is 9:30am (8:30am Jamaica Time).

WI lack right players for 50 over format , they need batsmen who can occupy the crease and build innings .

I feel sad for Bangladesh..after playing 25 years of regular international cricket they have become somewhat decent in one format of the game which will very soon die out

Bangladesh have won the last 3 ODI series against West Indies (2 in BD and 1 in West Indies).
